p Winners of the ‘boys assisted final’ in the 2017 Northland Primary School surfing champs on April 1, Mangawhai Heads were: 1st Benjamin Porter (Waipu), 2nd Brock Johnson (Mangawhai), 3rd Jordy (Baylys Beach) and 4th Rylee-Jae Whitehead (Mangawhai). Organiser Tony Baker said due to the wide range of skill levels and ages in the competition, organisers decided to run an ‘Assisted Division,’ where surfers are assisted into catching waves by their parents. Light winds on the day provided perfect surf conditions for youngsters to showcase their talent.
