As term one draws to an end the Post Primary Teachers Association has warned wider Northland of a “serious” shortage of secondary teachers — something they say is indicative of a nationwide problem. “Forecasts suggest there is room for around 2,200

replacement secondary teachers each year for the next eight years,” says PPTA president, Jack Boyle.

“It will have a lot of implications for kids in Northland. We don’t want a second class system happening with kids missing out on subjects.”

With training and games well underway for 2017 the team travels to Whangarei to compete in the division one women’s competition. On Saturday they put up a good fight against Old Girls to lose 3–1 with ‘players of the day’ going to Hannah Nichols and Loren Pocklington.

Shaved for funds p Hayley Reily shows off her new look after shaving off her hair for the Child Cancer foundation ‘shave your lid’ fundraiser at the Maungaturoto markets last week. Hayley said she felt proud to go under the razor in front of her friend who had recently lost her own hair while receiving chemo. She raised over $2,000 from an online donation page as well as taking collection buckets around Maungaturoto and selling raffle tickets.

We have recruited new heads of department in each of these areas over the past couple of years and they offer excellent leadership to their departments.”

Ruawai College principal Raeleen Harre said she has found recruitment “challenging” par ticularly for mathematics and science subjects.

“We’re not getting huge numbers of applications for positions that are being advertised. Often you have to advertise more than once for the same positions because you may not have had sufficient numbers to shortlist, or alternately have not had the quality of applicants,” she said.

Ms Harre added that she thought that by promoting Northland as a destination for teachers could make positions more attractive, and that housing and accommodation opportunities could be another factor for the decline.

However Dargaville High School principal Michael Houghton, said the shortage hadn’t directly affected his school.

“We have advertised a couple of positions this year and we have received a reasonable field of applicants for both roles. We have actually done pretty well and at the moment we are fully staffed.

It looks like we will remain that way.”

Mr Houghton had also noticed an increase in teaching position applications from the Auckland region.

Over the last 10–15 years the number of 60 year olds and above who are teaching has risen creating a teaching workforce that is gradually retiring from the profession.

“School life is incredibly important to children and they need great teachers with enough time to work with them oneon-one. That’s never going to happen if schools are always scrambling to get someone in front of kids,” said Mr Boyle. ¢

An Easter art hunt u by Joanna Manson

The Mangawhai Artists Association will be hosting their annual Art Trail over Easter weekend on April 15 and 16, featuring 50 artists in 18 separate venues.

Two Kaipara teenagers recently spent five days competing in the national age group swimming championships in Wellington.

The free event has been running for the last 10 years and showcases local artists in a self-drive art trail.

Organiser and artist Jeanette Vickers says on average over 350 people make their way through the trail which draws interest from Hawkes Bay to Whangarei.

“It’s a very compact art trail. The best place to start is the gallery where you can pick up a map and plan your day,” she said.

An increase of newcomers to the community means that a lot of new artists will have work on display and a number of original Mangawhai artists have new pieces on show. “There

will be glasswork, woodturning and furniture, ceramic jewellery and pottery, photographic artists’ works, and some sculptures. I think this year is going to be interesting because the variety of art is going to be much wider,” said Jeanette.

Every medium of art featured on the trail is for sale with the added bonus of not having an additional commission fee. Also included in the trail are the four pieces of art which won placings in the Kaipara Art Awards last year.

The art trail runs from 10am–4pm, Saturday and Sunday during Easter.

Conor Willy from Dargaville, and Ocean Shadbolt from Maungaturoto were qualifiers who raced alongside New Zealand’s best teen swimmers as part of the Northland swim team. “It’s really a feat just to qualify, as it’s very difficult,” said Conor’s mother Kay Willy.

Ocean has had the goal of qualifying for the meet for a couple of years now.

“Last year I missed out on qualifying by 0.03 of a second,” she said.

The young swimmers found the competition a challenge, with Ocean saying “it was an eye opener being at a national meet with all the best age group swimmers in the country. It certainly was a reality check as there were swimmers trying to qualify for world events.”

Connor competed in the 50 and 100-metre backstroke and butterfly.

He achieved a personal best in the 50 metres backstroke.

Ocean competed in the 200, 100 and 50-metre backstroke events and her best placing was 15th out of 31 in the 50 metres backstroke. Conor is motivated to swim by his parents, coach Glenn Smith, and the challenge of it, but for the rest of the year he is focussing on his head boy duties at Dargaville High School and playing soccer for the Northland premiere team.

Ocean hopes to gain a medal at the nationals next year and is motivated by ”fitness, having goals to work towards, and it keeps me from being bored.” ¢

Kaipara abuse prevention is going through a number of changes including funding cuts and a new name — Whanau Focus Centre.

The Northern Wairoa Golf Club has been donated a defibrillator by it’s ‘Tuesday Haggle’ members who have spent the last seven months saving for the purchase.

Club president Robert Nathan said it would be “fantastic” to have the defibrillator available not only to the golf club but also to have it available for nearby Baylys Beach residents.

“We decided a long time ago that there was a need for a defibrillator at the golf course. The Tuesday Haggle’ volunteered to raise the money and got the ball rolling,” said Robert.

This weekend the club will hold the annual Northern Wairoa mixed pairs masters tournament. ¢

The Ministry of Social Development announced last year that contracts for their services Strengthening Families and Sages would end nationally.

However “Whanau Focus is committed to continuing with all our services, they’ll just be a different version of what we currently offer,” said manager Wendy Salter.

Whanau Focus are now looking into raising funds through other sources such as a calf-rearing scheme that chairman Hal Harding is coordinating.

“We welcome any financial support,” says Wendy.

The centre helps Kaipara families with issues like household organisation, abuse, homelessness, confidence building, and parenting issues for example.

It has an open door policy. “I believe that people have the strength inside them — we empower people and they empower themselves,” says Strengthening Families coordinator Bethne Smith. The centre is also looking for a new board member and

The Kaiwaka Sports Association will be celebrating the sporting achievements of 33 local nominees at their annual sports awards dinner on April 26.

This is the first time nominations from affiliated sports clubs in Kaiwaka and Otamatea have reached a record high.

The awards night features four categories: senior sportsperson of the year; junior sportsperson of the year; service to sport and the Greg McRae Memorial Trophy for a junior with sporting achievements that has also contributed back to a sport.

KSA Manager, Cheryl Anderson said “our sports awards evening is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talented sportspeople in our community and to show our appreciation to those

people who work behind the scenes to make sport happen.” New Zealand has several towns that put on their own sports awards and Kaiwaka is the smallest,” says Cheryl.

The evening will be hosted by MC John Markby from More FM and will include a dinner made by locals Mark and Pam Ottaway and a sports’ bingo quiz.

The evening starts at 6.30pm at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex. Tickets can be purchased at Jaques Four Square — adults $25 and children (year nine and under) $10. ¢

The Dargaville area has a long tradition of music, especially featuring the accordion with exponents like Kevin Friedrich and the Emmett family. Now, accordion player Christine Johnstone is looking forward to inspiring a new generation of players.

After her parents saw she had an interest in music when she was eight they decided to give her lessons and they chose the accordion after being advised by a friend.

“It’s such a versatile instrument.

You can carry it around with you quite easily. The variety of different sounds is amazing. It has a number of reeds and switches which can imitate various instruments from piccolo, violin right through to bassoon.

“I began teaching when I was 13. My teacher, Faye Major, had an overseas trip planned and would be away for several months and she asked me if I would be interested in teaching while she was away. I enjoyed it so much I then began teaching privately myself.”

Throughout her life she has travelled all around the world to play the accordion and has been part of accordion orchestras.

Then last year Christine and her husband moved to Mahuta because “we love the area and have wonderful family living here,” says Christine.

But she will still travel to Auckland

Maungaturoto primary school teacher Daniel Alcock has an alter ego who is wrestling with the Maniacs United Professional Wrestling team from Auckland.

The Northland District Health wants to let the region know that there is a spider bite antivenom at Whangarei and Kaitaia Hospitals should it be required.

“Please note that you don’t deteriorate so quickly from a spider bite that you couldn’t get the antivenom in time anywhere in Northland,” said Chief Medical Officer Dr Michael Roberts.

While bites can be painful, there are no recorded deaths connected to a redback bite anywhere in Australasia since the development of an antivenom more than 50 years ago.

Symptoms can include stomach pain, sweating, aches in muscles and joints, nausea and vomiting, and increased heart rate and blood pressure.

Redbacks typically hide in dark, dry, sheltered spaces and are most active in the late afternoon and evening. Don McKenzie, the Northland Regional Council’s biosecurity manager says

“As a kid I fell in love with WWF (World Wrestling Federation). What I like about it is you’ve got these massive heros who are real, not like in comic books.”

So in 2014, Daniel figured it was time to give his childhood dream a go.

He trains in Auckland every two weeks and the show in Maungaturoto later this month will be the biggest in the Kaipara yet, with 260 tickets sold so far.

It’s in Maungaturoto because “I told them I’d like to have my first match in my home town.

“I’m very nervous. I’m fighting a woman called ‘Just Plain Evil’ and she’s got a thing for destroying newcomers,

I’m wrestling in front a lot of people I know and I’ll be wrestling in my undies, so to speak.”

Daniel says “it’s important to let the kids know you can do it and to believe in yourself. The cooler stuff you want to do is often the harder stuff. In the past I’ve made excuses for why I can’t do things, so when this opportunity came up I’ve made no excuses for myself.”

At school he’s known as ‘Mr A’ by the kids, so it’s also going to be his wrestling name. Also “it easy to chant,” an important factor he says.

“We think it’s common sense to point out to Kaipara residents in particular, that given this discovery they might like to take a little bit extra care when working in and around sand dunes, under old logs, and in back yards, as the spider can hide under garden implements and sheds,” he said.

Both organisations advise anyone who thinks they may have been bitten by a redback to seek urgent medical treatment and anyone who finds or suspects they’ve found a redback should call the pest and disease hotline 0800 80 99 66. ¢

Wellsford’s ‘Local Vocals’ choir group are running a workshop and six singing sessions for children in Wellsford and surrounding districts during the upcoming school holidays.

A DoC kiwi aversion training day took place in Rotu Forest near Dargaville over the weekend for dogs and their owners.

“We are keen to extend the joy of singing to students,” said president Anna Pendred.

The workshop and lessons will be taught by Local Vocal member Jill Jackson, a primary school teacher with 30 years’ experience singing in choirs and leading school ones.

The one day workshop is designed to provide a ‘taster’ for choir singing and Jill says it’s open to all levels and abilities.

“It’s an opportunity to find out what happens when people sing together, some ideas to practise which may help them explore their own voices, meet others who are interested in the same thing, and participate in new and fun musical games and activities.”

The workshop takes place in the upcoming school holidays on Wednesday, April 19 from 3.30 to 5.30pm at the Community Centre, Rodney Street, Wellsford. Only children aged seven to 13 are invited to attend.

Then for those who are keen, the six singing group sessions will start on Thursday, May 25 from 5.30 to 6.30pm and carry on the same time every week after at the Community Centre. The cost is $10 as a joining fee to Local Vocals and an extra $20 for the six sessions.

Jill hopes the taster workshop will encourage young singers to attend the short singing course which she aims to finish in a combined concert with the Local Vocals in the Community Centre on Saturday, July 8. ¢

A total of 60 dogs took part and aversion trainer Tom Donovan said that it was the most dogs he has put through a course in a single day.

The free training course involved the dogs being led past fresh kiwi scent, dead kiwi and kiwi droppings in a forest setting.

If the dog reacted to the kiwi scent a short shock was delivered via an electric collar, similar to a low-powered electric fence.

All hunters wanting to hunt with their dogs on Northland public conservation lands must have current kiwi aversion training certificates before a hunting permit can be issued.

“In our area the dogs are mainly hunters that will kill,” said DoC biodiversity ranger, Reuben Booth.

“Because hunting dogs are always in the kiwi environment they are more of a risk compared to farm and pet dogs.

The course also creates awareness for the owners so that they are aware that it can happen anywhere,” he said.

Even though the course doesn’t guarantee dogs won’t kill kiwi, 70% of dogs that have had aversion training will stay away from the national icon for good.

all times as it’s the only way to guarantee that it will not kill kiwi.Dogs are the number one killer of kiwi in Northland and aversion training takes five minutes per dog and it is recommended the dog attends multiple trainings. ¢

Dargaville man Albie Russell was awarded a life membership to the Northland Alzheimers Society at their recent AGM.

Dargaville police are making their presence felt around the community by visiting businesses to provide crime prevention advice and reassurance.

Albie has been a member and a great friend to the Alzheimers Society Northland since February 2012.

He became involved when his wife Margaret Russell was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

“It was clear from this very first phone call that Albie was devoted to Margaret and wanted the very best care and support for her that he could provide,” says community advisor for Alzheimers Society Northland, Robyn Barr.

“He became a much loved member of the support group providing great insights into the impact Margaret’s condition was having on their family, and is always willing to think creatively about how to meet his challenges in everyday life with Alzheimers,” said Robyn.

Albie has also instigated the promotion and organisation of public

presentations on dementia in Dargaville.

“He is always challenging us to “get out there” and raise community awareness.

This approach has been very successful thanks to Albie’s local knowledge and willingness to do what it takes to get the message heard,” says Robyn.

Albie says it was great to be acknowledged and that he likes to “contribute back as they have helped me.” He would also like to give credit to the society for all the work they do.

He is keen to make sure that anyone caring for someone with Alzheimers is aware “that there’s help out there. People can try to take it all on themselves and there’s groups that can help. A surprising number of people are affected out there.”

Since opening their shop in Maungaturoto last year, Whole Life Organics has expanded business by opening a vegetarian cafe on site with views out to the Brynderwyns.

Owners Murray and Kimberley Partridge have converted the back part of their shop and deck area which was formerly used as cafe premises over 10 years ago.

The idea to open a cafe alongside their organic homemade New Zealand foods and products was “always in the plan’’ and the couple have been busy refurbishing the space for opening day last week.

“It’s a vegetarian cafe and we also cater for vegans and offer gluten free options. Kimberley is a qualified vegan chef and has lots of classic recipes from her time working in Hawaii,” said Murray.

Kimberley says it is an “exciting time” being able to bring all her favourite and old recipes to New Zealand after 20 years including the famous ‘Banini’ which will soon be available in the cafe.

It’s such a tempting proposition — and one that’s so common here in New Zealand. Why get an ‘expensive’ tradesperson in to fix that leak, tackle that building job or install that air conditioner? Your mate knows a mate who can do it for a box of cold ones. Then again, if that mate isn’t the real deal, your job may end up costing far more than you bargained for.

Far before the leaky buildings controversy of the early 2000s threw the issue of sub-par construction into shocking relief, the trades have been irked by non-professional ‘cowboys’.

The subject of everything from dire tales around the pub table to consumer affairs shows and lawsuits, it’s amazing that such often well-meaning but unskilled workers still exist. New laws have clamped down hard on the legality of using non-qualified tradespeople around the home, farm or business, but the temptation still gets dangled in front of the unsuspecting.

Perhaps it’s our rugged DIY, independent attitude. But with builders now having to offer comprehensive guarantees for their work — and often overseeing sub contractors in allied trades who must do the same — it’s a matter of whether or not a building with uncertified alterations can be sold. A huge investment could become all but worthless without major repairs by a real, licenced professional. Add to this the position of rental property

investors facing changes to the rules governing what constitutes a liveable standard. Bad plumbing, wiring, or gas fitting may well nix the ability to recoup rental returns.

It’s easy to avoid hassles, however — most professionals in the trades carry identification to prove they really are fully trained and up to date with the latest rules and technologies.

Plumbers, roofers and gasfitters now carry photographic identification, for example, allowing customers peace of mind. Electricians, builders and other tradies all have their own version of the same system so it’s easy to check the credentials of the person who is coming into your home of business to perform vital work.

The message from all the professional organisations is the same — check to make sure anyone you hire is qualified.

Make sure they are the right person for the job. And if in doubt, ask for identification. This way, you’ll be sure that any repairs or renovations are above board, and undertaken by the best. ¢

Thinking back to the year 1985, there are few icons of the era still alive and kicking. From music to fashion to movies and kid’s toys, sometimes the remakes fall short of the memory of the original. Thankfully, Nissan continue to buck this trend in a big way.

Some call them barn finds, classics, ‘orphans’ held together with determination, backyard restorations and nostalgia. But to those who truly love collectible motorcycles, their two-wheeled machines are part of the family.

Breathing new life into vintage and respected names like Norton, BSA, Triumph and Indian is part of the fun of being an enthusiast.

The other parts — at least according to those in the know — are getting together with other motorcycle fans to share tales of the garage and the open road, and finally getting out there on a crisp summer morning to let the world see your obsession in steel and chrome.

Kaipara boasts many a vintage, classic or collectible machines lurking in sheds and garages, tucked under tarps or pieced away in boxes to be re-assembled.

That’s why long-time motorbike fan, keen rider and top local mechanic Rick Groves is sparking up interest for a new club — open to all lovers of the open highway on two wheels.

He says that the club is planned as an informal group of mates with their passion for two-wheelers in common, and that all bikes are welcome so long

as they are a little bit special. That could mean anything from true vintage machines like ‘knuckle head’ Harleys through to modified Japanese road bikes, Italian cafe racers to full-trim touring cruisers.

As the owner of a Norton, a BSA and a ‘Bantam’, Rick knows that a love of motorbikes often means starting a collection!

The club is in its infancy right now, but plans are afoot for it to be headquartered in the Northern Wairoa Boating Club’s spacious clubrooms, central to Dargaville. A full dance-card of shed raids, fun rides and regular gettogethers will be put on the calendar next month after ‘foundation members’ put their names forward and swell the ranks.

Three months on the Mangawhai Youth Club is well underway thanks to youth advocate Sarikha Paikea who hopes to run creative workshops for local 12–25 year-olds.

This rugby season the Otamatea Hawks will have a junior grade in the Whangarei competition after widening their net to offer youngsters without a local club the chance to play.

A twilight poetry evening kickstarted the club back in January.

“The focus of this year was to explore different ways of expressing ourselves through a range of workshops. For our poetry night everyone got involved, stood up front and recited poetry which was really awesome to see,” said Sarikha.

Through her own youth work and life experiences, Sarikha took an interest in her hometown with the aim to “create a safe and supportive space for young people” hoping to break stereotypes and give back to the community at the same time.

There next gathering will be on April 27 to celebrate Pink Shirt Day

The Hawks found there were children from other areas who wanted the chance, and now have the numbers to set up a Hawks junior grade for under 11s and 12s. The club also has a senior team that has been playing since 1988 and an under 14s and under 15s team.

“The numbers have been dropping over the years, so a lot of the clubs are having difficulty getting full teams,” said Hawks secretary president Jennie Reynolds.

Training for all teams in the Hawks club happen on a Tuesday and Thursday at the Kaiwaka sports complex. “The junior and senior teams warm up together, before they break up into their own grades to train,” said Jennie.

The Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society will be showcasing many years of hard work and progress at the Mangawhai Museum over Easter.

The Kaipara has plenty of markets that provide a social place to get quality produce at a good price while supporting our local business. This week we get the lowdown on the monthly Maungaturoto markets.

Chairman Doug Lloyd said the society’s display in the museum will give the public an opportunity to gain a better insight into their volunteer work which focusses on maintaining the Mangawhai harbour and caring for the surrounding wildlife.

“We’ve spent a lot of money dredging 125,00 cubic metres of sand on the harbour floor back onto the spit. We also plant up to 15,000 spinifex grass plants each year and have done so for the last 15 years.”

The society is busy dredging from March to August taking a break over summer because of the rare bird life in the dunes.

Mr Lloyd said a lot of locals were unaware the restoration society existed and that money from their rates went towards the many projects the

volunteers completed. “Because the ratepayer funds us we can’t do it without their financial support. This includes moving over 18 hectares of mangroves.

It will be great to say ‘hey, this is what we achieved with that money.”

The Easter showcase will appear next to the display on the ‘big dig’ which involved Mangawhai locals banding together to re-open the northern end of the harbour.

“We are leveraging off the ‘big dig’ and will include old and new photos to compare with how the harbour looks today. There will be someone from the society present all the time to explain exactly what we do.” Entry to the Mangawhai Museum will be free over Easter.

It is closed Easter Friday but will be open otherwise from 9am–4pm. ¢

The idea for the markets started almost four years ago, after the suggestion of resident Carol Hunter.

“So we agreed to give it ago — I jumped on board and we got a monthly market going and it’s been fantastic” says market co-organiser Terri Donaldson. Terri co-organises with Jodie Hawken, and her partner Kenny also helps out.

“It’s like a family atmosphere, and the people you work with are fabulous.

It’s a fun social hub which is really nice.

“The quality of the products have become better over the years” says Terri. At the markets you can find things like fresh fruit and veges, crafts, fresh fish, eggs, cheese and milk.

If there’s a stall type they haven’t got just ask. “We ask around for what

people want, and if we haven’t got that we try and find it” she says. “I’m a big believer in supporting everyone. Within half an hour we’ve got the Mangawhai markets, the Waipu market and the Paparoa market. So if you go to us one week and then another the next, we can all work together and it’s sustainable.”

“Another reason why we only do them monthly is we try to support the local shop owners as well. We are also trying to eliminate plastic bags, and we encourage people to bring their own, so we try to do the environmental thing as well as supporting the locals” adds Terri.

The Maungaturoto markets are on the first Friday of every month, from 3:30pm till 6:30pm at the Maungaturoto centennial community hall. ¢
