A petition calling for the Kaipara District Council to employ staff based in Dargaville to deal with an increasing roaming dog problem, has received over 350 signatures at last count.

Petition instigator, Joanne Williams, says she wants to see roaming dogs off the streets of Dargaville.

“I started the petition to find out who wanted to see some action. Then all the stories started coming out. We want to see Kaipara District Council take responsibility for employing people for animal control. No one should have to wait an hour to be saved from an attack.”

Dargaville resident, Alister Grant, lives near Selwyn Park Primary School and worries it will not be long before a child will be bitten.

“We want to see the stray dogs off the street,” he says. “I love dogs and animals, but I just want people to do things properly.” Kaipara District Council’s animal control is externally contracted to Armourguard and the contract is current until September 2019. KDC spokesperson, Ben Hope, says Armourguard have recently carried

out over 41 proactive dog patrols, which are carried out every night, and attended to 33 complaints, which has led to several dogs being picked up and impounded.

“Council is in the process of investigating the most cost-effective way of providing an efficient animal control service. This may mean that the service may be brought ‘in-house’ in the future.

Armourguard are currently undertaking door to door checks for unregistered dogs. Infringements will apply for any dog that is not and requires to be currently registered and microchipped.

Likewise, any dog that is identified as not being kept under control may be uplifted and impounded, and the owner infringed for failure to control or confine.”

Kaipara property values increase The total capital value of the 14,819 properties within Kaipara District Council is $8.6 billion, with the land value of those properties now valued at $5.0 billion.

This is a 30 per cent increase from the previous 2014 value level.

“The important thing is that Kaipara is growing. It is changing and its rate of change is getting faster,” Mayor Smith says.

Plans are underway for a regional schools’ chess tournament, following a successful series of in-house contests at Ruawai College library.

Members of the Dargaville Swimming Club have had a successful summer season with their competitions resulting in many placings and even broken records.

Chess-playing students received preparation and coaching from Diana Schaefer and Oliver Picken from the Whangarei chess group, and during March, intermediate and experienced pupils competed, facing new opponents with each round.

Library manager, Amy Mehrtens, suggested the in-house tournament to the students after noticing the number of regular chess players, and encouraged them to get involved.

“The school has been incredibly supportive and the principal, Mrs Raeleen Harre, is especially keen for it to become an annual fixture, with a trophy awarded at the end of year prizegiving for each years’ college champion.

This is the first year the tournament has been held,” says Ms Mehrtens. Details of the proposed regional contest have yet to be finalised. ¢

At the end of March the best swimmer from all schools in the Northern Wairoa district competed at the Northland Primary Schools Swimming Sports, and swimmers from Dargaville showed their skill in the pool.

Four swimmers: Wil Douglas, Kaitlyn Smith, Hadley Herman, and Matty Douglas, broke 12 records between them. Selwyn Park School relay team won the Super 4 relay and broke the record from 2012, and the Dargaville Intermediate team won the Coates Shield for the fastest relay. Both school teams were made up of club swimmers.

The Dargaville High School equestrian team has ridden its way to fifth placing at the Northland Secondary Schools Combined event held on Thursday, April 5 at Kaikohe Showgrounds.

The team of four girls rode ponies owned by team manager Jae Carey, who is also mother of two of the team members.

One of the girls, Amber Ryder, has been involved with the riding team for three years in a grooming role, but this year rode a borrowed pony, and achieved the best overall score of the team.

Rider Ruby Carey achieved fifth placing in her dressage, and this was the first time she had coached the team.

“It was exciting to have a student coach the team, as well as ride, and she really stepped up to the plate,” said team manager, Jae Carey.

Eighteen teams took part in the competition. ¢

Pirate flags snapped in the brisk breeze, the sun glinted off foaming spray, and a fleet of sleek hulls carved through the water on Dargaville’s Northern Wairoa River — but this wasn’t a buccaneer invasion.

The jaunty pennants, bunting, flags and polished brass and chrome were all part of a parade of nautical classics — the 2018 Northern Wairoa Boating Club Regatta.

The day’s events on Saturday, March 31 were not just well-attended by representatives of the local boating community — they also attracted vessels and their crews from other spots around the mighty Kaipara harbour, such as Tinopai and Pahi.

All manner of boats made an appearance; from massive modern cruisers to nimble speedboats, anglers’ pride and joy, through to launches designed and built right here on the river.

The fleet navigated a course, which took them from one end of Dargaville to the other following the curve of the river, and spectators lined the waterfront along the route.

To keep the racing civil and decorous, it wasn’t all about flat out speed.

then match their earlier time as exactly as possible, a feat of control, which was made all the more tricky by the rushing tide.

Seeing the proud flags flying and the spray blowing back from the bows, one could clearly picture those olden times when the Northern Wairoa River was a bustling ar terial lane of commerce.

With a huge swag of prizes donated by the generous business leaders of the town, the regatta segued into a late afternoon and evening of cold drinks and good eating, carrying on the recent sterling reputation of the boating club’s kitchen. A fine time was had by all on and off the water, with the final day of daylight savings for the year farewelled in style.

April brings the beginning of trivia evenings at the boating club’s riverside headquarters, along with a continuation of their very popular Friday steak nights and Sunday roasts. ¢

Almost as soon as Otamatea High School student Ben Morrison could walk, he wanted to drive.

Now the 15-year-old has his sights set on representing New Zealand by racing in America, but will need a major sponsor to make this dream a reality.

“He has raced quad bikes since he was four, karts at eight and then mini stocks at 12,” says mother Tracey Morrison.

Ben is the youngest driver to have ever raced a Three Quarter Midget car, which is the age category usually reserved for those sixteen years old and over, at Western Springs Speedway and to have a win at Stratford Speedway.

He has won many titles at Waikaraka Family Speedway and around the country, and was given a one year age dispensation to race in the adult class of TQ Midgets, which he started on the day after he turned 15.

“Everyone says he’s a superstar,” says Tracey. “Lots of people he is racing with are around the age of 25–50, and then there’s Ben. All their cars are plastered with sponsors. Ben wants to race professionally, so to do that we need a sponsor.”

Ben says racing is all about having fun and spending quality time with the family outside of the house.

“We get to go away to lots of different places, and meet lots of new friends from around the country when we travel,”

says Ben. “Dad used to race as well, but then he stopped and I started.”

He says any potential sponsor could expect exposure to thousands of people every week.

“At Western Springs there are probably over 5,000 people watching.

Also, when you are on the podium after a race, you get the microphone and have the opportunity to thank all your sponsors.” ¢

KAIPARA LIBRARY NEWS Paparoa Library is closing for renovations to the building that will house the future Medical Centre and the Library. The Library will be closed on Saturday 7th April 2018 and at this stage the time frame for the closure is unclear.

Maungaturoto and Kaiwaka Libraries have kindly offered Paparoa Library members the use of their libraries during the close down period. All Kaipara residents are able to use their local library cards at Dargaville Library.

All of the other libraries in the Kaipara District (including Mangawhai) have free wifi available for the community.

On a spur of the moment, Dargaville/Bay of Islands Hospital Operations Manager, Jen Thomas, decided to participate in Shave for a Cure and, together with six others, has raised $5,300 for the cause.

Ms Thomas was inspired after seeing friends and family lose their hair to cancer treatments and wanted to do something to help.

“I thought this was an opportunity to raise funds for a great cause and have a bit of fun along the way,” she said.

“On the day I was wondering what the heck have I done; but it was the point of no return when I realised we had raised over $3,000.”

Shave for a Cure is a fundraising initiative to support New Zealanders diagnosed with some form of blood cancer or related condition. Money

raised goes towards support services, research and providing information.

This is the first time Jen has participated, but already there is talk of taking part again next year.

“We are completely blown away and it is very humbling that so many of our colleagues throughout the Dargaville Health Board have donated us money, along with our family and friends.

“A huge thanks to the teams who donated their time and money to this amazing cause it is very humbling.”

On Tuesday, April 17 a gathering will be held at the Dargaville High School from 9.30am–4.30pm for Pacific youth, to meet and discuss their heritage and inspirations.

The first-time event provides the opportunity for those between the ages of 14–24 years, and their parents and caregivers, to speak about the issues facing them and what they may want in their future.

“Many youth are aware of their Pacific heritage, but don’t know what that actually means, or know how to connect with their sense of identity,” says Fale Pasifika manager, May Seagar. Ms Seagar will be travelling from Maungaturoto, through Paparoa and Ruawai, and can collect participants along the way, then drop them home again afterwards.

Accordionist and host, Kevin Friedrich, has lived in the USA since leaving Dargaville High School in 1979 and says he always enjoys his Dargaville related projects.

“The object of the concert is to put something on for a range of musical taste,” said Kevin.

“The funds raised from the concert all go back to the Dargaville Museum to assist with their efforts to preserve local history and culture.”

The show was opened by the Christchurch Accordion Orchestra directed by David Thorne and Kevin

performed a variety of accordion works.

This was followed by local vocalists, choirs and musicians. Dargaville Primary School Kapa Haka group also performed and a multimedia display put together by local videographer Ken Cashin, showcased iconic New Zealanders and kiwiana.

“We always try to cater to all age groups to enjoy,” said organiser Margaret Tier.

“Some people said this year the event was the best one yet.”

The 12th Annual concert will be held on March 31 2019. ¢

Ernie Bate, his wife Anne and Chris Ellis join the cast of The New Wing at Elsinore.

“The idea of acting on stage was somewhat daunting when first approached to do this, but I am quite enjoying it so far,” said Ernie.

Anne added that the couple “retired to Pahi from West Auckland two years ago and have been made very welcome by the lovely people here, and love the creativity at the Otamatea Repertory Theatre.”

For Chris Ellis, he has “rekindled an interest in theatre from my school years.”

There’s nothing like a roaring fire to create a feeling of warmth and comfort in the depths of winter.

To make sure you can enjoy a toasty warm home when the frosts kick in, there’s a few jobs to take care of first. Thankfully, the entire process, from logs to embers, is covered by our local power equipment specialists.

Being a predominantly rural area, many of us have the option to kill two birds with one stone during the firewood preparation process. The option of taking down old, unwanted or dangerous trees is on the table for those living the rural or lifestyle block life, though, a kit of tools to accomplish the task will stand you in good stead for years to come.

The most versatile is of course a good chainsaw, and options in terms of size, power and weight are all there to explore. The best way to pick a saw that’s right for your situation is to talk to the experts; we visited Trevor at Godfrey’s mowers and chainsaws, who has customers from homeowners, to farmers, to forestry professionals.

For the small backyard, battery options exist, which pack a punch as tough as petrol. For those felling whole trees, it’s also safety first — grab a set of protective glasses, chaps, gloves and

ear protection before wading in. Once your tree is felled, it’s time to get rid of the foliage. Green waste disposal is getting pricey, but using a chipper, it’s possible to turn rubbish into valuable mulch and chip for garden beds. A small easily portable chipper with a petrol engine, should be all you need for the farm or lifestyle block, chomping through the brush and twigs to make waste disappear. Then it’s time to tackle the firewood itself. Now, you could spend hours behind an axe, or you could invest in a log splitter to cut the chore down to size. A variety of mechanical and electrical splitters exist, from those, which use a high-pressure spring, to those, which divide the timber using sheer hydraulic force. Once a pile of neatly quartered wood is prepared, stack it in a dry place and wrap it up against the elements — you’re set for a winter of warm feet and power cutproof heat.

It’s a new financial year for business and with the current buoyant mood in the region, boosted in part by a continuing migration to our provinces there’s a lot of new things, both already here and just on the horizon.

Dargaville’s main street is a testament to this, slowly filling up with new endeavours. The wraps are soon due to come off, of what was once Henderson’s boarding house, now restored and transformed.

We have a new outdoor, adventure and cycle store in town, a new artisan crafting in felt, new restaurants, and expansions planned for some main street traders, which will see big moves in the coming weeks.

Even stores once shut, have found new owners, and long-established businesses are investing in the future, such as the stately old Northern Wairoa Hotel, where air conditioning has been installed throughout. There’s even work underway on a new workshop for those of a marine persuasion.

It’s the same story in our smaller towns — Mangawhai has seen massive gains from citysiders heading north.

Overall, property values in the region jumped exactly one third, or 33.3 per cent between 2014 and 2017.

The figures showed that the small settlements, which bracket the top of the harbour — Maungaturoto, Pahi, Paparoa and Tinopai — had become very attractive to buyers — over 65s have looked to the regions for a sea change, and the mild weather and, affordable homes have great appeal.

As the housing situation in the big

cities is unlikely to be fixed quickly, despite new governmental initiatives, we can expect more new faces in our local towns, even through winter.

New businesses are popping up all over, and the old-established names seem busier than ever going into winter. The traditional time for a ‘cool-down’ in retail spending and real estate seems to have bypassed us again this year, and local merchants are making sure there’s nothing you need to leave town for.

Dargaville provides a good example of this trend toward multitasking.

Take the longest established business in the town — dating back to 1936, under the same family ownership.

Following the success of last year’s Project Stingray art project, the Mangawhai Artists Association is again inviting community involvement for its newest art experience entitled Magical Mangawhai Goes Bush.

A team of bright young future journalists are bringing the latest school news to the community through the Mangawhai Beach School Extra magazine.

The artists are asking the community to celebrate the native New Zealand bush by visiting the gallery between Thursday, April 19 and Tuesday, May 1 to paint a bush theme on natural bush materials, river stones and paper banners. All paints and materials are supplied, and all ages are invited.

The Mangawhai team will then spend four days completing an installation of the pieces within the gallery creating a scene under a night sky, and the exhibition will be officially opened on Saturday, May 5 and close on Sunday, May 13.

Last year over 300 people helped paint the 101 plywood stingrays, 58 of which are now installed on top of the two giant rays on the exterior of the gallery.

says the magazine will be emailed to students and families.

“Some of our talented year seven and eight writers had the idea to create a magazine, so I have been supporting them to create this. It is completely student written and edited, and I just meet with them once a week during lunchtime to check they are all on track.”

The next issue will include tips for what to do in the school holidays, a run down on Intermediate Camp, a report on a recent trip to a marae, and an upcoming community art project plus many more stories. ¢

Daylight savings may be a brief respite from those cold and dark mornings for those of us who work nine to five, but the calendar and the seasons dictate the workflow for people working on the land.

After the warmest first quarter of the year on record and a slow start to many of the vital chores, such as maize harvesting and resowing pasture, the pressure and the lights are on with farmers working into the night.

To the layperson, the sight of big harvesters and tractors working through the hours of darkness may be a strange one, but it’s a necessity when nature throws the rural sector a curveball. Powerful lamps illuminate the fields as contractors harrow, cultivate, harvest and sow, and modern GPS mapping equipment relies on eyes from satellites, rather than from in the cab.

Nevertheless, having a support network on call if and when things go wrong, can be the difference between stealing a march on productivity and being stuck in the middle of the countryside counting stars.

There’s always a little overlap as daylight saving ends — a condition of the calendar, which is not beloved of all farmers to begin with, especially those who know that a herd of cattle operate on their own internal chronometer. This year, meteorological conditions have pushed the boundaries, delivering not only the warmest first three months

of the year ever, but a sizzlingly hot January that broke records. Teamed up with a fading La Nina weather pattern, which was prone to sling tropical storms our way at fortnightly intervals, this combination of humid heat and pouring rain altered the farming schedule across a variety of tasks, from maize cultivation to fertiliser application.

One farming discipline, which shone through in these conditions, was the ability to spread slurry fertiliser on quick notice, taking advantage of the gaps in the rain to maintain effluent pond levels at optimum, and also disperse nutrients during the heat. Slurry tankers towed by tractors and specialist trucks, have

hit the fields in place of reticulated irrigators in many places this year, proving their worth in the changeable conditions — so much so that new units were a hot topic at Northland’s recent field days.

Now, as the season changes, specialist operators, such as Dargaville’s Westearth are still working hard, while the overlap with contractors in other fields of endeavour means that it’s a busy time across the sector. As La Nina fades, we may be looking at a mild winter and a drier summer for 2019, but weather gurus hint that the next thing to watch for is the onset of cold Antarctic winds bringing seasonal storms. ¢
