Hailing from Kaihu, Aleisha is a Black Fern and part of the team that won the Women’s Rugby World Cup this year. She is also a member of Auckland Storm women’s team.

The Sportsman of the Year Award went to rugby player Matthew Moulds who grew up in Ararua and has played five seasons for the Northland Taniwha team and captained three. He’s contracted with ‘The Blues’ for the 2018 season.

The sellout awards ceremony hosting Kaipara’s sporting elite was held by Sport Northland last Friday at the Maungaturoto Country Club.

“Our sports people are magnificent, and up with those on the world stage.

It just shows that you can achieve big things even if you’re from small town New Zealand,” said Sport Northland chair, Chris Biddles.

The ASB Junior Sportsperson of the Year was Simon Parker, from the Otamatea area. He is a member of the New Zealand secondary schools’ Barbarian team, The Blues development team and the Northland under-18 team.

He was also this year’s Kaihu under-17 player of the year and top try scorer.

The Dargaville Veterinary team of the year went to the Maungaturoto Men’s triples bowls team, David Eades, Kevin Robinson and Wayne Wrack, who won this year’s New Zealand National men’s triples. They also won the Northland men’s open centre triples, five other major Northland tournaments, and received the Bowls Northland team of the year award.

The Noel Radd Motors Kaipara junior team of the year went to the Rodney College golf team. Tarrin Rous, Jack Oldfield and Aaron Allott won the Northland secondary schools’ golf tournament, qualifying for the national tournament in Hastings.

Other awards included footballer Matt Rowe winning the Thermatech leadership award, and rugby league coach Daniel Fulop and rugby coach Snow Tane both winning the Thermatech Coach of the Year.

Swimming official Carlrine Gillespie won the Steinlager Pure Official of the Year and bowler Wayne Wrack

was the Pacific Motor Group Master Sportsperson of the Year.

Robyn Bruce, Graeme Powdrell, Christine Taylor and Gywn Powell all received the Barry Markwick Memorial Service to Sport Award.

Winners of the Kaipara District Council contribution to club sport were Helena Williamson for rugby and Maree Chapman for netball.

The Sport New Zealand Community Impact Award went to the Mangawhai Football Club.

The event was hosted by John Markby from More fm and featured 12-year-old Otamatea singer Kate Cotching.

Northland is close behind Auckland as New Zealand’s fastestgrowing region according to data released by Statistics New Zealand with Kaipara’s population also showing growth.

Local health shuttle service Linking Hands recently added another vehicle to its fleet which will be based in Kaiwaka and is on the lookout for more drivers.

The Kaipara District had a population increase of 800 people from June, 2016 to June, 2017 which saw the total rise from 21,700 to 22,500.

All townships within Kaipara reported growth in the statistics including Kaiwaka, Dargaville, Mangawhai and Mangawhai Heads.

The populations of both Northland and Waikato grew 2.4 per cent over the

past year compared with Auckland’s 2.6 per cent.

“We’re seeing high growth in our big cities, but also in the areas surrounding them, driven by migration,” population statistics senior manager Peter Dolan said.

During the past year New Zealand’s overall population grew an estimated 100,400. ¢

“This car will enable Linking Hands to both improve its service to Kaiwaka and the rural areas around it and be a backup for Mangawhai,” said publicity coordinator Andre van den Berg.

“It will spare the shuttle service sending cars from Maungaturoto or Mangawhai and will save the driver’s time, fuel costs, and enable them to stretch their dollar to serve more clients in the long run.”

However a number of drivers will be needed to help run the Kaiwaka car service and those interested are advised to call 09 431 8969 or visit linkinghands.co.nz for more information.

Exhibitions at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery will change every two weeks over summer and this November will feature paintings by four local artists showcasing the theme ‘people and places’.

A celebration marking ten years of a training initiative to bring more graduating doctors to Northland, including Dargaville’s Carrie Bryers was held in Whangarei.

Rebecca was awarded first place in the two dimensional category for her painting in the 2017 Kaipara Art Awards. ¢

Set up by the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences and the Northland District Health Board in 2007, the Pukawakawa regional-rural programme enables fifth year medical students to gain crucial experience in regional and rural health.

Those who are selected spend two thirds of their time at Whangarei Hospital and a third at one of Northland’s four rural hospitals.

So far 211 University of Auckland medical students have been through the scheme with some finding life partners as a result and many of these couples were present at the 10-year reunion

She said an advantage of working in Northland today is having a close connection with peer health providers, more capacity for one-on-one time with patients, and the hometown advantage of being a local.

“Me being from Dargaville — I know every fifth patient.”

Hanson Unasa, who spent seven weeks in Dargaville during his Pukawakawa experience this year, described the programme as giving him ‘the best year of my life’.

The programme is the first partnership of its kind between a medical school and a health board and each year 24 medical students complete the scheme. ¢

Maungaturoto’s old scout den on Bickerstaff Road has taken on a new lease of life that’s proving to be a local financial windfall.

Simply known as The Den, the long abandoned scout centre has become a rolling garage sale of donated household effects that resulted last week in a $20,000 cheque handed over to the local Riverside Rest Home dementia unit appeal.

“This sum is expected to be added to in the future,” said Den organiser, Albie Paton. “And we have also been able to allocate funds to St John and the rescue helicopter appeal as well.”

Other projects organised by The Den have been seats and a picnic table at the nearby wharf which was built to mark the 150th anniversary of the town in 2013.

“The district and surrounding area have really got behind this project and we seem to have a perpetual garage sale going on,” said Mr Paton.

“People who have family members down-sizing to go into retirement units or into care are taking what they need and

donating the rest of their furniture and goods, as are members of the general public. The Den is also a ‘men’s shed’ where locals can meet together every Tuesday to “make and repair things and generally socialise.

“Other projects we have taken on have been assisting the Op Shop with displays, building a trolley for

the Presbyterian Church, made a new noticeboard for outside the supermarket, a trolley for the library, and repair of furniture at the Country Club.”

Last but not least has been helping the local primary school children establish a chicken run.

Monitoring the endangered fairy terns on the Mangawhai sandspit has started for another summer season under the watchful eyes of DoC and local voluntary group ‘About Tern’.

Fairy Tern volunteer coordinator Jane Vaughan has been involved with the group for the last 11 years.

“Our role is to go out and observe what the fairy terns are doing within the shell-patched areas we have fenced off.

That’s where we’re fairly sure the fairy tern will make their nests.”

This season there are three areas under surveillance by 14 volunteers who go out by boat to the sandspit.

“We sit in the hide and observe with telescopes and binoculars and report what we see. If there is a nest during the season we make sure that the changeover of parents on the nest is in action, or if there are chicks present that they’re being fed.”

The volunteers head out two days a week until all birds are fully fledged, usually by the end of January.

Jane says volunteering for the birds is a “wonderful experience — there are only 40 odd left in the world so you get a sense of achievement by reporting what you see.”

DoC biodiversity supervisor Lesley Judd said it was important for the public to respect the fenced off areas.

“The sandspit is a wildlife refuge, meaning dogs and vehicles are not permitted in the area. Fairy terns are one of our rarest birds and breed only in the northern North Island. Mangawhai is one of the few sites the birds call home,” said Lesley. ¢

After receiving communications about the Norfolk Pines of Pahi, council staff contracted ArborLab to assess two Norfolk Pines and a Moreton Bay Fig. ArborLab is a qualified organisation that offers a wide range of arboreal services and produced a report on safety and continued maintenance of the trees.

The report found: 1. The Easternmost Norfolk Pine is listed within the New Zealand Notable Tree Register and has the seventh largest girth of all Norfolk Island Pines listed in the register. As an aside, New Zealand is home to some of the largest

Norfolk Island Pines in the world, so there is a possibility this tree could be or become a part of an international register.

2. Over the last number of tree health assessments, the overall health of the Norfolk Pine trees has continued to climb, and, at time of the report, the tree was considered to be of average to fair health.

Council will be undertaking at 24 month rotation on further health and risk assessments to ensure the ongoing well-being of the trees at Pahi.

The Norfolk Pines are young and will continue to grow to add to the amenity of the Pahi Reserve.

A Ministry of Primary Industries surveillance team was in Dargaville recently as part of a wide programme of checks for myrtle rust. So far they have found no evidence of it in the Kaipara.

The team looked at places with riparian planting and in public areas, with Dargaville being the only place searched in the district. Within Northland, other teams also looked in Paihia and Kawakawa.

“We have selected areas for surveillance based on scientific modelling showing where likely spore dumps may have occurred, having climatic conditions suitable for myrtle rust, and having significant areas of host species. In addition, we look at areas that are in close proximity to known infections,” said MPI adviser Lesley Patston, “We currently stand at 122 infected properties. The majority are in Taranaki and Te Puke, with small numbers of detections in Northland and Waikato. It

For the first time in about 50 years Tangowahine has a shop, due to flax weaving artist Heather Carrigan opening her ‘Flax and Fibre’ art gallery and gift shop.

Living more than 45 minutes from Whangarei, the prospect of a bumpy ambulance ride by road is not easy with severe injuries, Scott says.

Scott’s first helicopter ride was in 1999 when he was working on his farm, pruning a tree. A large branch fell to the ground, pinning him underneath it.

He managed to get out from under the branch, but not before he realised he had sustained serious injuries to his torso.

He called 111 and it was decided that the helicopter was the best bet for a quick response to the rural area.

“It isn’t a long trip back to Whangarei Hospital, it is quite a short flight but it was so reassuring. To have the chopper arrive and help you like that, you can’t thank them enough,” he says.

Five years later, another accident, this time involving heavy machinery, nearly had dire consequences for Scott.

“The machinery sliced into my leg above my knee and took out a huge chunk. It was quite serious and extremely painful,” he says.

Again, a call to emergency services lead the rescue helicopter heading to the farm once again.

“It was pretty horrific. It was good to see the paramedic and get pain relief. I couldn’t have handled the road trip to Whangarei Hospital, it would have been too much,” he says.

“It started as a place for me to work, and I then I thought — while I’m out here working I might as well have the doors open.

“Then I came across great people making awesome stuff, and thought ‘wow people need to see this’.

“While I like to create, my favourite thing in the world is encouraging other artists, appreciating their work and putting it forward. Which is why this is the perfect thing for me.”

“Neither of my injuries over the two incidents were life-threatening, but at the same time, they were both very serious.

“Both times, the true professionalism of the crew stood out. The Northland Rescue Helicopter service is such an asset for us here in Northland, we probably don’t appreciate it as much as we should.”

With isolated, rugged rural areas all throughout the North, the service is very much needed, he says.

“To be able to utilise this service from anywhere in the North, or in some cases, anywhere in New Zealand, it just shows how lucky we are to have it. To be able to pick people up from such remote areas and get them to help in a short space of time is just amazing and something we should not take for granted.”

The life blood of the kauri tree is its golden amber sap, which was known to pre-European Maori as kapia, and prized as a material both for making night-fishing torches and as one of the ingredients of traditional tattooing ink.

European settlers however found a new use for the gum, as it was discovered to produce the best quality resin in the world.

In an age of wooden ships, this was a revelation as good as any gold rush.

In the 1860s, a real gold rush had brought many settlers to New Zealand, centred on Otago. When the gold ran out they were left to find a new trade, and being used to hard work large numbers of them travelled north to turn their hand to gum digging. The kauri logging boom had left huge areas of stumpstrewn, bracken-cloaked swamp and heath throughout the north, with some huge fields near Dargaville. The early gumdiggers set

to prising loose the gum from its resting place under the soil, in the process enriching those savvy merchants — Auckland elder statesman Sir John Logan Campbell among them — who saw the money to be made in this enterprise.

It was a hard life, full of deprivation and back-breaking work. Gumdiggers lived in crude huts and worked long hours with the pick, spade and long metal prospecting tools to find and unearth their spoils. Claims had to be purchased, and all the gum found went back to those who held the ultimate title to the land. Despite these issues, settlers from many nations came to seek their fortune, or

at least give their children the opportunity of a fresh start. While English, Scots, Irish, Welsh and Maori all worked the gumfields, the most distinctive new faces in this trade were the Dalmatians, often erroneously called Austrians at the time. Fleeing forced conscription and a peasant’s lot under the harsh rule of the Hapsburg Empire in Europe, these people brought their culture and traditions halfway around the world to become some of New Zealand’s first nonBritish immigrants.

The Dalmatians attacked gum digging with a fervour and ingenuity that literally changed the landscape. Draining whole swamps, they laid the foundations for today’s farmlands, most visibly around Ruawai and on the eastern banks of the Northern Wairoa River. Prejudice went against them — in the late 1890s parliament tried to freeze out Dalmatian gum diggers with racist laws, but to no avail. By this point the Dalmatian settlers were accepted as part of local society and without their influence the Kaipara would be a far less interesting place today.

Names stemming from this diaspora adorn many leading local businesses, and further south the descendants of this migration established some of our most famous vineyards and most productive market gardens. Their influence has made Dargaville especially a more prosperous

The Kauri Museum is a living legacy to the work of the early gumdiggers who after the Otago gold rush lived to tell the tale of the next big boom, gum digging.

The Kauri Museum celebrates the hard work of those pioneers who were also some of the first non-British-Empire Europeans to settle in New Zealand.

Many years ago there were vast quantities of gum in the ground. In fact some of New Zealand’s fossil kauri gum is coal dated as 43 million years old.

The following excerpts are taken from ‘The Kauri Museum’ compiled by Gordon Ell: ‘The Kauri Gumdiggers searched for their buried treasure throughout Northland and the greater Auckland province’; ‘Their target was the resin produced by the mighty kauri tree, first gathered from the forest floor but then later dug from the earth on the sites of long-vanished forests’; ‘Kauri Gum was the basis of one of the largest export industries in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries but began declining from 1910 onwards’; ‘In the 1890s there were some 20,000 people involved in the industry, 7000 of them full-time’; ‘Many of these were the Dalmatian diggers who arrived from 1885, who joined local Maori and British diggers on the gum fields’; ‘As gum became harder to find, a number

of diggers resorted to climbing and bleeding the kauri trees. Flower lights up the stage ‘The Frog Prince’ is soon to open at the Otamatea Repertory Theatre (ORT) in Maungaturoto. This pantomime, written by Peter Flower, was first performed in 2006 and has had a rewrite to make it more topical.

Peter is a man of many talents. Not only is he a writer, he has directed ten major musicals in succession for the ORT and appeared in a wide range of roles. But perhaps one of his main talents is his extraordinary ability in the lighting department.

“Great lighting makes such a difference to a show. It is, in effect, painting with light. You can make a scene more eerie, or more magical — create moods to add to the theatre experience,” says Peter.

Peter became involved in the theatre at a young age. His father Alan Flower was involved in the ORT in its earlier days and he was also involved in the Maungaturoto Entertainment Group, so it was natural for Peter to become involved.

As a young man, Peter lived in Tauranga for several years and did lighting for the Tauranga Jazz Society and one of the local theatres.

It’s already taken over the world of hybrid hypercars, where the biggest attraction on any track is the part-electric Porsche 918 or it’s LaFerrari rival. Next came power tools, where brushless motors and bigger, beefier batteries have spelled the end for weak performance.

But there’s been one nut that’s proven tougher to crack — the world of the back lawn. We all remember early attempts at corded electric mowers, and that stigma has meant skepticism when faced with a new breed.

Well, not any more. Victa, who know petrol mowers literally inside out, knew that they would have to exceed to succeed. To convince the public that their new range of all electric mowers were up to the standard we demand — and let’s face it, we ask our mowers to handle some pretty gnarly grass — Victa packed in more power. The result is an 82 Volt, battery powered monster that’s hungry for even the meanest lawns. That big battery pack can be charged in just half an hour and lasts long enough to clean up your average section. If that’s not enough, the mower comes with two — one can charge while the other is in use. As you can imagine, 82 volts does the business — hard-core cordless drills and other construction tools pack in 18 volts and dominate wood and metal.

So power is no issue — but there are other factors at play here as well.

Imagine a mower that can be stored upright or hung up out of the way, with no fuel to leak out. The last thing Victa saw as wrong with old, corded mowers — aside from getting rid of that long, tanglesome cord — was their flimsy construction.

Passed away on 30 October 2017, at Kauri Coast Rest Home and Hospital, Dargaville, after a long illness which was borne courageously and patiently. Aged 92 years.

He will be remembered and cherished always by his wife Nancy of 67 years, his daughters and son-in-laws; Bronwyn and Rod Collins, Diane and John Hastings and the late Glennys (passed away 1972).
