p Tinopai School students went camping in Auckland last week thanks to the funds raised at the annual Tinopai Fishing Competition. “Our aim was to experience as many city opportunities as possible,” says interim principal Lynnette Haddow. “We visited the zoo, a first for many, and the wave pool where they zoomed down the hydro slide. Lessons on forces and science were had at the Auckland Museum and MOTAT. We ate at Denny’s and attended Ponsonby Intermediate, as they visit us annually and we saw how city children learn compared to a small country school. Our 2021 Tinopai Fishing competition will be held on January 9 and to help provide more opportunities for our tamariki.”

p After many years of enjoying the creative culinary arts together, Dargaville’s cake decorating club has disbanded. Former club president Lyn Miers says that the rise of online tutorials and videos has made passing on tips and tricks in person a thing of the past. While many of the members will remain good friends, it’s time to hang up the utensils and try something new. The occasion was made sweeter, however, by a final act of goodness by the club and its members. Funds kept by the club were signed over to Dargaville’s St John ambulance and presented by Lyn to Troy Savage of that institution to keep up its life-saving work in the community.

The two-year Fight the Tip campaign against the siting of a mega-landfill in the Dome Valley, with a perceived pollution threat to the Kaipara Harbour, comes to a head at public hearings beginning next Monday.

Chinese-owned Waste Management Ltd bought 1,000 hectares of land with the dump planned for what opponents say is a catchment area for the Hoteo River, which feeds into the harbour. They say the dump poses the threat of massive poisoning of a rich marine resource in the event of a breach.

Much needed detail on the actual implementation of the Kaipara Moana program will be coming out to landowners and the general public prior to Christmas.

NRC has initiated a project with NorthTec, Whitebait connection, WDC, FNDC and KDC to estimate how much plastic and litter is reaching Northland’s estuaries and coastline each year.

Litter traps have been installed on stormwater catch-pits around the region. NorthTec will audit the contents of the traps every three months to estimate how much plastic is washed into the sea. The project aims to identify some highrisk land uses such as playgrounds, car parks, supermarkets and fast food premises to enable targeted mitigation and education.

REDUCING THE IMPACT PLASTIC ON OUR ENVIRONMENT SUBMISSIONS NOW OPEN The Government is seeking feedback on its proposals to reduce the impact of plastic on our environment. “Tilt Renewables is in the development phase of the Omamari Wind Farm. This means that field surveys and assessments are currently underway to inform the project envelope of the wind farm and the resource consent application as a whole. These detailed site-specific investigations enable assessment of the potential impacts of the project and optimisation of the project envelope to ensure potential impacts are minimised,” said Tilt Renewables’ spokesperson Stephanie Cook.

That means looking into aspects of the build from noise; it’s possible

to have a normal conversation at the base of the proposed modern turbines, through to impact on the local ecology and many more considerations. The benefits of such a wind farm being completed here include a reliable local power source which produces no pollution, local employment and potentially, lower power bills.

Pending a robust resource consent, consultation, submissions and reporting process, construction could begin by this time next year.

Top student-athletes across a variety of codes have been honoured as finalists in the 2020 ASB Sports awards, with accolades disbursed late last month to high school sporting achievers.

Kaipara athletes have been well represented this year, with students from both Dargaville High School and Ruawai College numbered amongst those to receive the prestigious call, in a competition supported by the ASB bank and Sport Northland.

At Dargaville High School, Nathan Condon was awarded for services to cricket, Sophie Burke for golf, Ethan Crawford for powerlifting, Madison Johnson and Lucas Payne for rugby and Anya Sinclair for tumbling. Ruawai College student Tasharna-Rose Keogh received an award for cheerleading.

All up, 113 finalists from the north were chosen, all with an equal claim to the top spot as the region’s preeminent youth athlete. This year there can be no formal dinner or awards ceremony; therefore, organisers decided not to award a top team or top sportsman and sportswoman trophy.

The achievements of the finalists have been as diverse as they usually are, and range from AFL to wakeboarding.

Contract divers will include the Kaipara Harbour in an ongoing summer search plan to check more than 2,000 boat hulls from now until May next year, targeting unwanted pests threatening the Northland marine environment.

Officials are asking boat owners to be especially vigilant due to an expected increase in the number of boats visiting the region as part of domestically-focussed holiday arrangements because of the Covid-19 border closure.

Northland Regional Council’s biosecurity working party chair, Jack Craw, says authorities are keen to ensure vessels are free of marine pests before their owners start travelling to new areas with the onset of warmer summer weather.

Maori ward to bring a mandate

Kaipara District Council is seeking public reaction to proposals to set new speed limits in the Mangawhai and Kaiwaka areas and around schools, including the Mangawhai urban area, with submissions due in six weeks.

Maori representation on the Kaipara District Council will give iwi the mandate to reflect Maori views, according to Cr Karen Joyce-Paki, who represents the Dargaville ward and is the first Maori member of council, now in her second term.

The council has decided by seven in favour with two abstentions to establish a Maori Ward for the next local body elections with Mrs Joyce Paki moving the vote.

“I have mana, but I don’t have a mandate, and that is a big issue for me when I am asked to speak on behalf of all the Maori in Kaipara,” she said.

“I was elected by Dargaville residents.

I was not elected by Maori to speak on behalf of Maori. We don’t have the luxury and the knowledge of that mandate at our table currently.”

Statistics NZ says the Maori electoral population in Kaipara is 3,630 of 20,760 electors.

Speaking at the meeting were Antony Thompson, Snow Tane and Sharon Murray representing the interests of Te Uri o Hau and Te Roroa.

“Our infrastructure is a prime industry, with forestry, farming, fishing and other areas as well,” said Mr Thompson.

“There was a need for Maori voices being shared.”

The council will notify the decision before November 30, and if 5% of

The feedback is sought as part of a rolling review of speed limits to be conducted across Northland, and part of a regional project to reduce serious injury and fatal crashes on our roads by matching speed limits to the road environment. It’s also seeking to make urban areas safer for pedestrians. The strategy also requires the council to reduce speed limits around both urban and rural schools.

Northland Transportation Alliance manager, Jeff Devine said that all councils are required to review speed limits as part of the national Road to Zero Road Safety Strategy to ensure speed limits are safe and appropriate.

“Speed is a significant factor in 30% of fatal and serious injury crashes in Northland and the community has expressed a strong desire to address the issue,” he says.

He studied the NZ Diploma in Environmental Management, level 5 and 6, at NorthTec and after graduating, secured a position where he worked on placement throughout his studies.

“I’ve always hunted and been keen on fishing and diving but my work life has been in the building/construction industry. I decided it was time to study what I was passionate about. I had walked and swum through our natural environment but I wanted to learn some of the science and biology behind how it was all linked together so I stepped out of my comfort zone and signed up for study.

“NorthTec’s Conservation department has a great group of tutors with heaps of knowledge and passion which makes putting into practice what you will learn invaluable. NorthTec helped me to gain the knowledge I needed, and then the confidence to put that knowledge into action.

“I’m now working for Patuharakeke Te Iwi Trust Board (PTB) in their Taiao unit where I monitor freshwater flora and fauna, control pests and collect seeds. I’m lucky to be able to do my

bit to care for the taiao as a career and work alongside people doing the same thing that are willing to help and share. The variety of work is great and helps broaden my knowledge, and I love working outside.

“I believe the taiao sustains us all on many levels. It was here before us and we should do our best to look after the taiao and it will look after us. Bupa Kauri Coast Care Home caregiver Lina Algar was surprised this week when she was announced as the Bupa Homegrown Holiday winner.

The caregiver had just finished serving morning tea to residents when she was announced as the winner of a $3,000 travel voucher. Lina says she’s been at the care home for two years as part of a career in caring for older people and also early childcare.

“I’ve got a mum who was a caregiver, so it’s kind of been part of my background. I like caring for others, and it comes naturally to me,” she said.

Lina’s name was randomly drawn from among the 4,000 strong Bupa

team. Northern Regional Director David Page was on hand to present the voucher for domestic travel, a change from the international travel vouchers given in previous years due to borders being closed. The 61-year-old mother of five says everyone’s been giving her recommendations of destinations to visit but says she already has plans on where she wants to go.

“My husband and I have been thinking about the South Island as I’ve actually never been there and it’ll be nice to see that part of New Zealand.

We’d also like to time it when the Bluff Oyster Festival is on. It was such a surprise, and I’m really grateful.” ¢

Helping to provide stability, advice and positive role models for young locals has been a driving force for him for several years now, but he’s been forced to retire ‘on doctor’s orders’ to preserve his health. Despite stepping down from a top administrative role, he will still carry on as youth mentor to five local youth.

“It’s always been a pleasure working with those who care for others,” said the one-time recipient of Dargaville’s citizen of the year award. “I have great pleasure working with those people who understand the square, but don’t

necessarily work inside it. Outcomes and people are important.” Whanau Focus centre coordinator Rachel Ashford was forthright about Anaru’s impact on the mentor programme.

“The wisdom he has brought to the role and to his mentees is phenomenal.

The relationships he has helped create between the other youth mentors are awesome as well.”

Anaru leaves the top job with a legacy of success, and as noted will continue to help vulnerable youth find their place in the world with self-respect and empowerment. ¢ S”

Not wasting a second of his Covid-imposed ‘exile’, entertainer Kevin Friedrich is turning on yet another concert event for his local fans; and for fans of Christmas cheer.

The man who may hold the title of hardest-working accordionist in New Zealand has had a busy year, recording an album 30 years in the planning, hosting a concert for vital service workers post-lockdown, and entertaining at venues as disparate as schools and retirement communities.

Now he’s keeping up with an annual tradition, putting together a ‘sounds of the season’ concert on November 22 at the Lighthouse Function Centre, along with his friends.

Concert organisers say that this will be a seasonal showcase of classics, getting into the spirit of Christmas. After a disruptive and sometimes stressful year, it’s their intent to promote the goodwill and community spirit of the

season, while some jokingly insist that the holidays will be a good time to farewell a troublesome 2020.

The family-friendly event will be held at 1pm on a Sunday afternoon to ensure that music lovers young and old can attend, and there’s an afternoon tea intermission halfway through, featuring appropriate refreshments.

While the announcement of a festive concert has come as a surprise to many, those planning the show remind the public that we’re in the countdown to Christmas, with only seven weeks to go. The Northland Rescue Helicopter Service is set to receive more than $100,000 thanks to donations pledged to the More FM All Day Breakfast show last Friday.

Dargaville’s long-established Dalmatian Cultural Club has devised a great way to raise funds for upkeep on their local hall, and have fun doing it.

Instead of a sausage sizzle or cake stall, members of the club have organised a day-long horse trek through some of the most beautiful scenery in New Zealand.

On Saturday, November 21 riders will wend their way across farmland and rolling green hills, then down to the Ripiro coastline where they will take in some of the best beachfront riding and views in the world. With a growing equestrian population in the Kaipara, it’s a way to meet new friends, and also a chance to experience something new, along with your horse or pony. The trek is suitable for all ages and skill levels, and comes with another large bonus; one of the Dalmatian Cultural Club’s legendary lunches at midday, featuring home-cooked goodies from club members’ kitchens.

Trek organiser, Venessa Anich says that this is not the first horse trek arranged as a charitable event for the club. However, it is the first for some time, and excitement is building in the community.

“Our first original horse trek was to fund a reroofing of the hall, which is a large asset for our cultural club and for the wider community. This year’s event promises to be very enjoyable and relaxing, a scenic tour with a leisurely pace that makes for a fun and stressfree day’s riding.”

As well as the enjoyment of a great day in the saddle, riders participating in this trek will know that their entry fee is going toward a good cause, maintaining a home for the club who celebrate a vibrant strand of this region’s cultural history. ¢

After attending multiple fireworks-related call-outs last November, Fire and Emergency NZ wants a much safer and less eventful Guy Fawkes this year and is calling for the responsible observance of Guy Fawkes celebrations this week.

National fire risk management adviser Todd O’Donoghue says “we had a very disappointing Guy Fawkes last year. Between November 2 and 9, our crews attended 237 fireworksrelated call-outs — the highest number for the corresponding period since 2015.

“We saw large fires caused by fireworks as well as incidents of people shooting fireworks from cars and at people or structures.

This is dangerous behaviour and creates a high degree of risk for our communities.

“We’d like to not have a repeat of that on this Guy Fawkes.”

He added that Fire and Emergency prefer that people attend professionally run public fireworks displays. “However, if you are planning to set off fireworks yourself, please do it safely.”

• Watch the weather. If it is windy and dry, don’t light fireworks

• Read the manufacturer’s instructions, light fireworks in an open area away from anything that could catch fire and keep a bucket of water handy • Remember fire can spread very quickly and a house fire can become unsurvivable within three minutes • Light fireworks on level ground and point fireworks at the stars, not at people or other people’s property • Check local bylaws for the rules around using fireworks in your area. It was a day for champions at Dargaville’s St Joseph’s School, but not in a competitive sense. With sports heroes from many different codes on hand to help teach new skills, the message to youngsters was that everyone has a champion’s spirit.

Representatives gave tips and hints from touch rugby, cricket, golf, rugby and Parafed, the people who provide sporting opportunities to people who are differently-abled. Students jumped in to try putting and ‘launching’ balls from a tee at velcro targets, evading the competition at rippa rugby, scoring a try with turbo touch, and even crashing and grinding in a game of wheelchair rugby.

“The day is all about getting outdoors, and learning about sports in a less competitive, more inclusive way,” said Sport Northland representative and

school ‘energiser’ Paora Simon. “These kids have been having a disruptive year due to Covid and lockdowns, so being able to enjoy some fun like this is a positive thing.”

As well as building physical skills and abilities, the ‘champions’ themed day was about the concept of awhi, a word from te reo Maori, which means to encourage or help grow. St Joseph’s students learned a new acronym from the term, with the letters standing for Attitude, Whanau, Harmony and Integrity. ¢

Graham Belben – from paralysis to walking again

What may seem a simple and relaxing task now, is something he will never take for granted when his mobility was nearly taken away from him in a matter of seconds after a fall at his home in Kerikeri.

On March 31 of this year, Graham was woken in the early hours of the morning to his cats fighting outside – in an effort to stop them from injuring each other, he stepped outside from his home and stood on the underground water tank to call out to them.

Once sorted, he remembers looking at the stars in the sky and thinking how lovely they looked in that moment as he stepped down off the tank – and then bent down and before he knew it, everything went black and he fell forward, landing face first on a nearby large rock.

The jolt of the landing sent his neck jarring backwards. Everything was a blur for Graham, who quickly realised he couldn’t feel his body, he had lost sensation. He was paralysed.

Dargaville’s wearable arts events have grown in strength and spectacle year on year, with organisers and contestants striving to make each one more extravagant than the last.

However, after this year’s 2020 event was forced to shift dates because of an active lockdown, serious consideration was given to the rescheduling, with both the quality of the show, its financial longevity and public safety in mind.

Organisers have come down on the side of prudence rather than haste in deciding to abandon plans for an early-2021 event, retrenching instead for a 2022 date that hopefully will see the issues of Covid-19 a distant memory.

“We enjoy a lot of community support via ticket sales, and the threat of a Covid level change could affect this,” says wearable arts spokesperson John Pickworth. “The fiscally responsible path was to replan

Graham Belben is adjusting to a new appreciation for the simple things in life, like being able to go for a walk in the sunshine.

A major artistic and cultural event has been pushed forward on the calendar to ensure fiscal responsibility, and eliminate the threat of Covid-related disruption.

“I must have been off balance where I landed because as soon as I moved my head a little, I rolled down the ground a bit more and was lying there, unable to do anything.

We operate a Bed and Breakfast in Kerikeri and our house is quite large and long – my wife Elaine was recovering from hip surgery and was in the other end of the house. I was yelling for help but didn’t know if she could hear me,” he says of the terrifying ordeal.

“Finally I heard the water pump going and realised Elaine must have got up and was in the kitchen. I was yelling as loud as I could and finally, she heard me. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her come out of the house in her white dressing gown and I yelled again.

Kaipara Kōrero Long Term Planning Where would you like the Council to spend your rates?

Elected Members were recently at Paparoa Market, Dargaville Twilight Market, and Mangawhai Beach and Country Market to ask Kaipara residents where they wanted them to focus over the next 10 years.

The exercise, along with a survey, will feed into the Long Term Plan, that will set the 10 year direction for the Council.

Participants were given three “money” stickers, and asked whether they would invest them in roads, water, waste management, climate change, or other things like our parks and libraries. The intent was to give community members a chance to chat with Elected Members about where they would like the Council to direct its efforts. More than 600 people took part across the three markets.

Mayor Dr Jason Smith said people were really thinking hard about where to invest.

“Often the first thing people would say when you gave them the money was to spend it all on roads. Then they worked out if they put it all on roads there would be nothing left for anything else. These are the kinds of trade-offs Elected Members are having to make all the time. It led to some great conversations,” says Mayor Smith.

It’s time to start thinking about your water use again The beautiful stretch of weather we’ve been enjoying is great for the beach, but not for water supplies. Being wise with water at the beginning of the season can ease the pressures later on.

Let’s streeeeeeech the supply as far as we can.

If you water your vege seedlings by hand, with a hose or watering can, you can direct the water where it is needed, so it is not wasted on areas that do not need watering.

Now is a great time to check for leaks, make sure taps aren’t dripping, look at any large spots of lush green grass, and check your pipes are still in good condition. The dry soil and ground conditions can put pressure on ageing pipes and cause them to crack and leak.

Are you on tank water? Check your water tanks early, while the water supply is still reliable. Later in the season it can be difficult to book water carriers and your water may cost more. If you’ve been wondering whether you have enough tanks, now might be the time to take action.

Once a month, every third Thursday, members of the Maungaturoto Garden Club meet to discuss and share their passion for gardening.

“The theme of the garden club is very similar to that when it first started in the 1950s,” said club president Sheryl Orton.

“It’s to help members enjoy their gardens. To share with other members our plants on the trading table, make friends and hopefully grow something in our gardens which will bring pleasure to us all. Members may not be active gardeners but simply enjoy admiring them.

“The Maungaturoto Garden Club is going stronger than ever. There is a growing membership and great local growers/gardeners make themselves available to share their knowledge and expertise at regular monthly meetings.

Time for a spruce up Things inevitably turn a bit more social in the summer and with the season this year following the misery of our winter of coronavirus discontent it might be time for many of us to look on the brighter side of life.

It is amazing what a few coats of paint can do to spruce up the environment.

Add in perhaps a few new furnishings, say curtains, cushions and the like and the outlook can be much more buoyant in spirit without too much damage to the wallet.

Colour can go outdoors too, and a brighter garden can welcome summer like nothing else. There are plants aplenty at garden centres and other local outlets, including colourful flowers; not

only to enhance the outdoor area, but provide a splash of enjoyment placed in vases inside the home.

To go alongside these, of course, you might like to brighten up that back garden by repainting any old flower pots or benches and fences. Add a new barbecue on the deck or terrace and summer entertaining beckons with fun times.

Garden furniture is also a great addition out of doors. There is a wide selection available online and, of course, at your local department store.

If you’re going to spend a fair bit of time sitting outside enjoying your garden, you may as well do it in style if you invest in garden furniture, which looks the part.

It sets the scene for entertaining family and friends.

The style you choose can set a theme for your outdoor space, too. For example, a wooden bench eating area gives the nod to a rustic style, and a big, comfy wicker and cushion seating set lends itself to a cosy nook — with a glass or two.

A Kiwi Christmas is usually well-spent out of the house, whether its an impromptu cricket match or just rough and tumble for kids and their presents from under the tree. Your garden centre will have good advice in treating lawn areas to a bit of TLC — grass feed and seed where it is called for.

It’s always good to save one day aside where you focus on your lawn on the run-up to summer.

Aside from a good trimming, look at keeping on top of weeds with weed killer.

Spend some time on the edges, and you’ll soon enjoy a fresh grassy family playing area. ¢

Maritime New Zealand is well aware that this time of year marks the beginning of the boating season when thousands of Kiwi boaties put on their ‘captain’s hat’ for the first time since last summer.

That’s why, as Labour Day rolls past on the starboard side, the people in charge of keeping Kiwis safe on the water offer the same suggestions. Have your boat checked out by a professional prior to launching, to make sure you’ve got all systems ‘ship-shape’ for your voyage. Overheating outboards, blocked fuel lines, sticky steering and wheezing batteries can all cause huge hassles on the open water. It’s best to get a onceover from those with the right skills before dunking your keel in the salt.

While we’re blessed with qualified local professionals who can sort out everything from fresh lifejackets to the recommended two waterproof means of communications to shore, there’s another important asset, which no skipper should be without when it comes time to cast off. That asset is education, and right now, there is a range of online courses available to help boost your captaincy skills.

One such course is the Maritime VHF Radio Operator Certificate, a

requirement for all those who wish to operate a maritime VHF (very high frequency) radio system. These are a great means of keeping in touch with others sailors and emergency services.

However, there’s a distinct protocol to follow, much like that used by pilots on their own aviation radio system. It costs $90 to complete an online course at home, and you could be qualified to add this communications and safety feature to your resume.

There’s a free of charge Beginning Boating course introducing nautical terms, basic safety and how to be a good crew member, whether your excursion is for fun, fishing or just for the family.

Summer is all but here, and that means the season for our nation’s busy water carriers to save the day, bringing life-giving H2O to rural properties. The water they deliver is as pure as possible for better health, but the system it gets poured into deserves some attention at this critical time of year.

An unsung hero of home cooking, sanitation and garden irrigation, the water tank, which supplies most rural Kiwi homes does its duty unthought-of until trouble arises.

A check of the system from top to bottom as water becomes a precious summertime commodity could save hassles and even illness further down the track. Experts in the field suggest starting with the inputs.

That usually means a trip to the roof, where rainwater is collected. Cleaning the roof itself of bird droppings, mould, leaf litter and debris is a good start when it comes to guaranteeing a healthy water supply.

Gutters also tend to fill with undesirable filth; those in the know will not make the classic mistake of leaving them connected to the water tank when hosing and washing them down.

The fitment of mesh or ‘bottle brush’ type inserts to banish leaves, and nestbuilding birds is also not a bad idea for those who rely on rain on the roof to guarantee litres in the tank. Low ebb

inside the tank itself is a good time to assess whether it needs a proper clean-out.

Call in the pros to dispose of bacterial masses, algae, slime and general nasties which can accumulate on the tank walls and floor, especially if the cover or lid is not 100 per cent tight.

It’s best not to go inside to try a DIY fix, as some tanks develop a low-oxygen environment, which can be hazardous to work in; it’s all about those bacteria.

Finally, look downstream from your tank to make sure the filter systems, which form your last line of defence, are working at full capacity.

The new season is a great excuse and reminder to change out particle filters and check the operation of ultraviolet light tubes; in combination, these can bust even the most insidious of waterborne bugs.

With a hot summer forecast, conserving water is important, but making the very most of what you have, and what you have delivered, is even more so! ¢

For decades, the ultimate family car was defined by the big station wagon. It was an easy arithmetic for carmakers; take your biggest sedan and add a copious back end. The concept saw classics born, like the big Falcons and Fairmonts of our collective youth.

The rise of the SUV saw more and more of what were initially off-road machines repurposed for school runs and family holidays. Space-wise, it was a sterling idea. In terms of car-like handling, it never really added up — until now. Tested recently, the Ford Puma is a legitimately fun small sports utility.

This week, the decidedly sleek and athletic-looking new Escape came under the spotlight, and it’s nice to report that Ford has delivered a one-two with this pair of new machines.

Once again, it’s the detail that wins the day in the style department. Gone is the slab-sided, tall look of old SUVs. Ford has moved the design language on, and there are little touches both inside and out which speak of careful forethought.

Blue neon lights up the inside of the cup holders for easy drink access at night.

The headlight clusters feature a sweptback design incorporating purposefullooking chrome projectors. The digital dash clearly shows everything you need, and nothing you don’t.

Then there’s the space and comfort factor, which make the stylishly understated (no faux wood or acres of tiny buttons here) cabin a nice place

p Escape offers a family driving experience that’s never dull, but which delivers practicality and safety as well as grip and power

to be. A big, clear satnav to the fore, simple to operate and powerful climate control, and acres of room for five passengers and their gear. It’s the big family station wagon, reimagined and thoroughly upgraded, then.

Except, when you actually hit the road, it doesn’t feel like one. The Escape looks smaller than it really is, but the real trick is how it seems to shed its weight and behave like a hot Focus hatchback when the right foot gets engaged. Immediately,

the lessons learned from the Focus and its front-wheel-drive differential technology were apparent.

For a two-litre machine, the Escape fairly bursts with the will to surge ahead.

There’s precious little body roll in the corners, either, which makes this less like an old SUV and more like something new. Ford changed the ute with the Ranger, giving it car-like handling. Now it’s reinvented the station wagon; it’s just under a different name. ¢

A new home for Can-Am u by Andy Bryenton

There’s a new home for Can-Am’s new 2021 range of off-road vehicles, as the big yellow brand moves in next door to Dargaville Ford on Normanby Street, Dargaville.

Under the auspices of Northland Motor Sports, the Can-Am banner is flying high over the town once again, completing an extensive move which has seen the construction of a purposebuilt new workshop and show yard. On board with the expansion are local CanAm experts Nigel and Donna Randell.

They have established a solid reputation as champions of the brand in the west Kaipara, and have continued that track record with Northland Motor Sports.

Site owner Lindsay West contracted local builders and concrete specialists Vuletich Construction to make the new Can-Am facility a reality.

“They are my go-to guys for building work. It’s been a pleasure to watch them put it all together from my office window.

I would highly recommend John and his team to anyone,” says the Dargaville Ford head.

He has entrusted veteran concrete craftsman John Vuletich with building his new display yard following the acquisition and demolition of Dargaville’s long-defunct Mitre 10 building some years ago.

The Can-Am team agreed with his assessment of the ‘military precision’

with which the new facility, with its special off-roader hoists and bike repair workstations, rose from bare ground.

John, himself, is appreciative of the opportunity to put his team’s skills to the test.

“It’s a landmark building in the centre of town, and I’m very proud to help both Lindsay and Northland Motor Sports onward to new successes.”

The Can-Am centre is open now, with a range of new quad bikes and side-byside off-roaders on the way to bolster the display.

Meanwhile, servicing and repairs on all makes and models is already in full swing as the team of Can-Am technicians and mechanics assist a booming rural sector at a busy time of year.

With a new home, and even more bright Can-Am signage waiting to go up, fans of the brand are poised for a 2021 season with new releases, including a powerful new Outlander 570 quad, sporty Maverick recreational off-road racer and an even harder-working Defender, of the kind Northland Motor Sports have recently outfitted for the use of local surf lifesavers. ¢
