Time is running out to have a say on the Northland Regional Council’s Proposed Regional Plan which is effectively an updated rulebook for the way Northland’s water, air, soil and coast are used and managed.

A petanque court will also be made by volunteers, and the contract for six courts to be shared by tennis and netball is expected to be confirmed this week.

The Kauri Coast Recreational Society, Sport Northland, project managers, stakeholders, Kaipara District Council and local kaumatua attended the sod turning and blessing.

“It’s been a lot of hard work, thanks to the project manager, the board and stakeholders. We’ve also had fantastic support from the Kaipara District Council,” said recreational society chairman Chris Biddles.

“We want Northland to be the go to place to live. Having quality sporting

facilities is important to make that happen.” In possibly one of his last public occasions before he leaves office this week, Mayor Greg Gent reflected on the Kaipara Sports Awards and how he was inspired by the youth there, saying that Sportsville will really benefit those talents and help nurture future ones.

“This is fantastic for the community — Dargaville needs it. In my time as mayor I have been shocked at how much volunteer work people do in the Kaipara, to make things like this happen.”

To which Chris responded: “It’s all about the end result. The reward is when you see our young people having quality facilities to use.” 

The plan which has been labelled as “one of the most important documents council has consulted on for many years” by NRC chairman Bill Shepherd will close its 10-week formal public consultation period at 4pm on November 15.

“It will impact — both directly and indirectly — on most Northlanders in some way,” said Mr Shepherd.

“If you’ve got an interest in Northland’s natural resources and care about how these are managed, then my fellow councillors and I strongly urge you to familiarise yourself with the proposed plan and make a submission before the deadline.”

The formal public consultation period which has run over the last nine weeks had only received around 40 submissions as of November 6, however Mr Shepherd was expecting more to come in as the deadline drew closer.

The proposed plan will replace three existing regional plans which are more than a decade old.

“More than three years in the making, our proposed plan is less

than a quarter of the combined size of the three plans it will replace and also represents substantial input by numerous stakeholders along the way,” he said.

In a new approach to freshwater management, the Proposed Regional Plan also has some tailor-made rules for five priority water catchments which includes Pouto.

First solo exhibition

The latest exhibition at the newly refurbished Muddy Waters Gallery, features work from Dargaville local and studio potter, Cath Stevens, in her first solo venture ‘From the Forest to the Sea’.

Hart Funerals new building is expected to be finished by the end of the year, with an official grand opening planned for early 2018.

“I started working with clay when I was in my twenties and I had to give it up because of other commitments but I’ve always enjoyed it, and then I had the opportunity to start again about eight years ago,” Cath said.

“I am inspired by the environment I live in, with all the fantastic scenery and wildlife we have here in the Kaipara.

“I enjoy working in clay as there is always something new to learn, be it glazing, firing, sculpting, turning, and so much more. It can be challenging at times as so much can go wrong, but

when a piece does come out of the kiln after it has been fired and works out as expected — this can be so rewarding.

“I work in and experiment with many types of clay such as earthenware, raku, stoneware and porcelain. I have electric kilns, a raku kiln and also pit fire my pottery.”

The exhibition has 42 clay sculptures and runs until Thursday, November 3. The Muddy Waters Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 11am3pm and Saturday 10am-1pm, at 43 Hokianga road. 

“Progress is going really well now.

Everything’s looking good,” said Morris and Morris Funerals general manager Gary Taylor.

A funeral home has operated on the Victoria street premises, in Dargaville, since 1921. In 2013 Hart Funerals was purchased by Morris and Morris Funerals of Whangarei.

“With the old building getting very tired, having served generations we wanted to put something back into the community that has supported us and our predecessors for nearly 100 years.

They deserve the very best facilities and the very best service and we trust our new funeral home will provide just that,”

said Gary. During building it has been business as usual, as Hart Funerals moved to 15 Hokianga Street and have used the Whangarei Morris and Morris mortuary.

The design of the new building incorporates a small family room to allow for family gatherings or private farewells, two arrangement rooms and two viewing rooms.

“We’ll have all the most up to date technology, like a brand new mortuary.

To our qualified staff that work here it’s really important. We’ve got trained professionals and now they are going to be in a building that actually represents that as well,“ said Gary. 

Students learn sustainability Chopper appeal comes to town  by Anna Harding

The Northland wide Enviroschools Expo came to Kaipara for the first time recently and attracted some 40 local school students, 10 adults as well as Northland Regional Council staff and Kaipara-based councillor Penny Smart.

A NEST rescue helicopter appeal roadshow is coming to Dargaville on Friday November 17, with a late-model Ford Mondeo, courtesy of Dargaville Ford, going under the charity auction hammer, starting at $1 reserve, with all proceeds going to the trust.

It is almost 29 years to the day that helicopter rescues in Northland began with a single call to action, on the 15th of November 1988. That original chopper — a Bell Jetranger — has long since been retired, but in the intervening years a succession of helicopters flown by the dedicated team out of Whangarei have carried more than 16,000 people to safety.

Dargaville Rail and River have been given the go-ahead to extend their rail cart trip from Tangowahine to Waiotira and are already taking pre-bookings for the service.

The idea for an extension has been in the pipeline since the project began but it wasn’t until December 3, 2016 that lease of the line was granted.

Since then Dave Selby and John Hansen have been working to prepare the track which included days of chainsaw work and using a digger to help clear sections along the track.

Now with the seal of approval from the New Zealand Transport Association with assistance from the Dargaville Community Development Board the seven-eight hour return trip has been given the green light to operate.

The ride features a tunnel over 600m long and 27 bridge crossings in total.

“As you go inland there’s a lot of different stuff out there to see — it’s like you’re in your own little world. There’s

Former police negotiator, consultant and coach Lance Burdett has been invited to deliver a free public talk on ‘managing your negative thoughts’, by the Paparoa Lions Club.

After working with the New Zealand police for 22 years, with 13 spent as a negotiator and instructor specialising in suicide intervention and predicting violent behaviour, Lance formed WARN International Ltd. An acronym for wellness, awareness, resilience and negotiation, the organisation delivers programmes on communication skills, safety awareness and resiliency techniques.

In Paparoa, Lance will cover issues like stress, family deaths and feeling overwhelmed. From personal and police experience, he will also talk about

dealing with suicide, providing an insight that few people can, from an academic and practical foundation. “Importantly, he will advise on what you can do to help yourself so that you can help others,” said Lions’ president Jim Rowlands.

“The club could see a need, so seized on this opportunity to have Lance speak.

A lot of people are finding it harder and harder to deal with what seems like increasing pressures of living in the modern world.

“As a club we felt that this was such an important topic that we didn’t want cost to be a barrier, though should

“I was out diving in the Whangarei Harbour at a favourite spot and had been down a few times. On my next dive, I started feeling a bit average but kept going, and before long I wasn’t feeling very good at all,” Logan says.

“I must have come up too fast or too many times, and once I was back in the boat that last time, I really felt like it was all closing in on me. Down on the sea bed, I had felt like I was going to vomit and the feeling just got worse. Something definitely wasn’t right. I felt like a bad mix between sick and drunk.”

Once back on shore, Logan vomited, but still tried to make it home, where he was found by his wife Zaria, asleep in his ute and still in his wetsuit. Panic kicked in and Zaria stripped him of his wetsuit, dressed him and got him into her car to take him to Whangarei Hospital.

“I was panicking but didn’t want to show our two-year-old that, so I just hurried to get him into my car to take him to hospital. I knew it wasn’t good.

On arrival, they said a nitrogen bubble might have passed through his brain and by that point I was a trembling mess but holding it together for him and our baby,” Zaria says.

“I felt better when they said the rescue helicopter was on its way to collect him and take him to Auckland, as I knew it meant he would be getting help faster.

Without that helicopter, I don’t know if he would still be here today for his kids and me.”

The Nor thland Rescue Chopper transported him to North Shore Hospital, t h e c o un t r y ’s s p e c i a li s t h o s p i t a l for dealing with the bends . Logan remembers it well, despite his condition.

The annual Maungaturoto Primary School car and bike show will be held on November 26 with a number of displays and activities available from 10am-1.30pm.

Organiser Colin Storey said anyone was welcome to enter their vehicles into the show.

“This year all the money raised from the event will go towards enriching the children’s learning and assist their education,” he said.

Entertainment on the day will be provided by the school’s kapa haka

group and Otamatea High School’s jazz band. “We will be having prizes for the ‘people’s choice car and bike’ donated

by Gas Maungaturoto. There will be the Ryco V8 car simulator and a prize for the fastest lap,” said Colin.

A tyre changing machine will also be on display with a prize going to the person who gets the quickest change. 

Dargaville Police are appealing for more information on a silver 2007 Land Rover Discovery, registration DISC03 vehicle used in an aggravated robbery at the Victoria Street Caltex service station last week.

Detective Sergeant Jonathan Tier said they had recovered the vehicle and would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicle or people associated with it in the days leading up to the robbery at 9.40pm on November 8.

So far sightings have been reported on Montgomery Ave and Detective Tier said the vehicle is currently undergoing forensic examination.

 The Mangawhai Beach School year three and four rippa team the ‘Mangawhai Chiefs’ at the Mitre10 Mega Rippa Rugby day held in Kaiwaka last week. The chiefs were the overall champions in the competitive grade beating the ‘Wellsford Brumbies’ 8-4. A total of 15 teams competed on the day with a turnout of around 170 players.

Mayor’s Message Roading Groups I am very pleased to report that our four regional roading groups have had their first meeting. Other than Te Kopuru, attendance was very good in what is a busy time for rural Kaipara.

It’s envisaged their next meeting will be late January or early February to get feedback on the draft terms of the new roading contracts that will be finalised by this time. The Group has a dedicated email address into Council to facilitate their feedback to us on what is happening in the network. Their input will be valuable to staff as part of the oversight role.

Long Term Plan Councillors continue to develop a draft Plan against which consultation can occur in the New Year. We are endeavouring to simplify as much as possible many of our functions.

Water Supply would be a very good example.

In Kaipara there are four main water schemes being Dargaville (including Baylys Beach), Glinks Gully Ruawai, Maungaturoto and a small select scheme in Mangawhai.

They are all charged out at a different rate depending on the costs of operating each scheme. As you would expect a number of the schemes have very similar costs but someone in the accounting department has to segregate all costs for the schemes then rate them back to users on that basis. Could this for example be simplified to an average cost across the district?. This is something we will want to talk to you about as part of the Long Term Plan 2018/2028 consultation process. Complexity carries a large internal cost to the organisation and in many cases I have seen for a very dubious benefit.

Dargaville Library Users will be well aware that the current facility is cramped. We have decided to have a more holistic look at the Library. This will include a district wide scan of what we are likely to need in the future and also what a modern Library actually is. The successful models that our staff have identified typically have elements of a community hub associated with them. Once we have agreed what’s needed suitable premises will be sought.

Sportsville Congratulations to Chris Biddles, his board and all those associated with making Sportsville a reality. The first sod was turned by Chris last week. Building will now commence.

My last function as Mayor before I step down will be the Council meeting on the 14th November. Peter Wethey, Deputy Mayor will take over until elections are held.

My most enduring memory will be of the many hard working community members that I have met giving huge amounts of their time to Kaipara on a voluntary basis.

I would like to thank and acknowledge some great staff that we have in our organisation, often working in difficult circumstances. To my Deputy Mayor Peter Wethey a huge thank you. Peter has been great as a sounding board for me, is unstinting of his time and I value his judgment. Although Councillors are elected via Wards, once elected they must act in the interests of the whole district.

Peter is just as passionate about seeing the west go ahead as he is for his home town of Managawhai.

Frenzied activity is the order of the day as the world’s most powerful flying sleigh, aka ‘Santa Force One’ is loaded up and fuelled for a Christmas Eve circumnavigation of the globe. But before the big day the man with the beard — the jolly old chap himself — is set to make a few forays out into the wider world to meet the public.

As well as employing an army of helpers to spread his seasonal message of good cheer, Saint Nick likes to put in an appearance at town Christmas parades, where he’s on the lookout for new gift ideas from many nations. A spot of reconnaissance — looking at what parents are buying to put under the tree next to his own haul of toys — helps keep the elves up to date with current trends.

The sweet-smelling scent coming from the Mangawhai Library Hall was a testament to the entries on display at the 65th Floral and Craft Show run by the Mangawhai Women’s Institute.

 Ann Dowson with her two trophies; the Foote Bowl for decorative open section and the Davis Tray for most outstanding exhibit in the decorative Section  Mangawhai was bustling over the weekend thanks the annual Garden Ramble which showcased 18 gardens. Ramblers were able to view the gardens leisurely over two days taking in rural plantings, water features and attending ‘special night viewings.’

Divisions ranged in age, craft and arrangement from a single rose to a decorated piece of driftwood to the best lemon and honey curd.

Convenor Adrienne Osman said she was pleased with the turnout last Friday.

“There’s something for everyone.

Most years we’ve had the hall at full capacity and year after year we’re trying to get more interest from young people as so many are moving into the area — we’re trying to modernise it by adding new categories,” said Adrienne.

Jams, photography, handcraft and a children’s section were also popular with entries.

Each of the judges provided feedback during the prizegiving and trophies were then handed out to overall winners.

Next year marks the Mangawhai Women’s Institute’s 80th birthday and Adrienne says the committee is already looking forward to celebrations set to take place around April. 

Acterly, me an’ Boss new Sharlene wood be unhappy, ‘cos we rememberd how she was wen that farm cat Hermin the Jermyn disapeared durin’ hay makin’ last summer. I spent a bita time looking an’ sniffin round the hay shed ata time, but nah, nuthin’ found.

But anyway, wen’ Boss herd that Paddle’s the cat had go to the big place ina sky, he tole Sharlene that acterly, Paddles the cat, with five toes, lika hand, was acterly alive an’ well at Pahi.

“Here deah, he sed. Lookit this, an’ he showed Sharlene, an’ me too, a pictcha of this cat. (below) “Yep,” seda Boss.” This Paddles mite not be werld famous, but he’s werld famous ina Pahi camping ground, ‘cos oversees visitas rekin he’s a reel sensation.

Baling hay has been a big part of farming since before the era of diesel tractors — and ever since the concept of machinedriven haymaking revolutionized farming, the big green machines from John Deere have led the charge. Now their new 0 Series round balers are set to step things up a notch, delivering greater efficiency and all round performance.

“The new 0 Series Round Balers expand our portfolio of hay and silage, and now pre-cutter balers,” says Nick Weinrich, product marketing manager for hay tools for John Deere. “In fact, the 0 Series Baler line includes the highest capacity Class II and III pre-cutter round balers on the market today, and we’ll offer customers the first Class IV precutter round baler available.”

The full range will include dry hay, silage and pre-cutter options for versatility across a wide range of farming applications. Key to the performance of

the 0 Series — which follows on and builds on the legacy of John Deere’s very successful 9 series — is the adoption of the MegaWide HC2 feed system which delivers faster hay intake and processing, and which increases balemaking capacity per hour compared to previous models.

It also helps operators handle a wide variety of forage material and swath sizes with ease, offering a 2.2 m pick up on both 1.21 m (4 foot) and 1.52 m (5 foot) bale models, allowing them to cover more hectares per day.
