Mr King narrowly won the seat on election night with 15,337 votes, 729 ahead of Ms Prime’s 14,608. However, after special votes were added, this result was overturned.

Ms Prime got 17,066 votes, compared to Mr King’s 16,903, for a

163 vote majority. After a first reaction to seek a judicial recount, Mr King said after talking to family and friends, he decided against this after looking at previous recount outcomes.

“However, I have been talking to many people, and I will be back to have

a go in 2023. I loved the job, it’s in my blood, and I feel I have much to offer.

p After last week’s bittersweet story of the closing of Dargaville’s cake decorator’s club, there’s a second slice of generosity to be shared. Club president Lynn Miers had already disbursed some leftover funds from the closing of the club, giving a cheque to the local St John ambulance station.

Now another amount has been handed over to those other emergency heroes at the Rescue Helicopter Trust, meaning that despite bowing out gracefully, club members can be consoled by the fact that their unused funds have gone to save lives both on land and in the air.

“I have called Willow-Jean Prime and congratulated her on being elected as the MP for Northland. It has been the honour of my life to represent the place I am so proud to call home. Thank you Northland, it’s been a blast.

“For now it’s back to the farm.

However, it’s not only my loss, as the guy that has been working for me is having to be replaced by me. As well, there are staff at my electoral office who will be out of a job.

“Meanwhile there are also a lot of constituent cases waiting for resolution and these I guess will now go to WillowJean’s office. In fact, many cases are referrals from her, and she will have to gear up staff to handle the load.

“Being an electorate MP is more demanding than a list MP. So in the last term, I have spent huge amounts of time away from home in the four corners of Northland and in Wellington. My wife, Sara says she sometimes felt I was a stranger, so being back at home for a while is going to be the upside to the loss.” Mr King went to Wellington this week for a farewell to the National Party caucus.

Ms Prime says she “was ecstatic” after hearing the news she had taken

the electorate — the first time Labour has done so since 1938.

“I am humbled so many people voted for me. I had always tried to be the best voice and representative for Northland in parliament whether I’m a list or electorate MP. “I will continue to do the best I can for Northland.”

The final election outcome was also notable with Labour candidate, Emily Henderson winning the Whangarei electorate in final results. Both electorates were on a knife-edge after the October 17 poll, and it’s the first time Labour has held both seats at the same time. ¢

“We are currently working with the Kaipara District Council staff towards proposing a targeted rate in the Long Term Plan with funding to commence in July 2021,” says Dargaville Community Development Board spokesperson Sue Curtis.

“We are in the process of finalising a proposal, and over the next couple of months we will be leading a quest to inform and educate every ratepayer in the Dargaville, West Coast Central and northern Otamatea Wards to ensure that the targeted rate is understood.”

If the council supports the proposal, formal consultation on the targeted rate will occur during its Long Term Plan consultation in March/April next year. That will be the public’s opportunity to let the council know if they support the targeted rate.

The DCDB and New Zealand Police have worked together to instigate the current CCTV project, which has proven valuable in apprehending wrongdoers and dissuading vandalism. Sue Curtis stressed the need to discuss the merits of the project long-term.

New choir ‘for the love of music’

In support of the Northland Rescue Helicopter Services annual appeal, Northland Hockey is inviting schools, clubs and social teams in Kaipara, and beyond, to join together for a 12 hour Hockey-a-thon.

A new Dargaville community choir singing together just for fun has been launched, with the aim of creating friendships through a shared love of song.

Long-term theatre participant, entertainer, singing teacher and vocal coach Anna Russon has decided to step up and help guide the new venture.

Participants will meet each Tuesday in Dargaville’s Greenways Community Centre to grow their skills, test their vocal abilities, and ultimately harmonise as they sing a variety of popular hits. Anna herself admits to being a singer who came into her own vocal confidence through similar practice.

“It’s my passion, but I never had a whole lot of confidence in my voice,” she says.

“I always had that worry that I’d be like those people who try out for the X Factor or The Voice, and are full of bravado but actually not very good. When I came to New Zealand, I took advice and coaching from Maura Flower, who asked me ‘how can you have no confidence with a voice like that?’ I want to pass on the boost

“This new choir isn’t aimed at entering contests or even performing on stage. It’s about a group of people who love music and singing, having a great time.”

The first meeting of the choir will be next Tuesday at 6pm, 43 Tirarau Street, Dargaville. There’s a gold coin donation each session to pay for sheet music, hall hire and hot drinks, but otherwise, all you need to bring is a will to have fun. No ‘natural talent’ required, just the joy of music.

By-election for regional council u by Paul Campbell

A by-election for a seat on the Northland Regional Council left vacant by the recent resignation of former regional councillor John Bain will begin on Tuesday, November 24.

Mr Bain resigned after the last council meeting voted for the inclusion of a Maori Ward in future local body elections, a decision later echoed in a Kaipara District Council vote.

Independent contractor Election Services, which is handling the byelection says the relatively lengthy, legally-prescribed process means it will probably be March next year before the eventual winner is officially sworn in and takes their seat around the council table.

However, Electoral Officer Dale Ofsoske says the by-election process effectively begins in earnest with the formal nomination period, which will run from Tuesday, p Electoral Officer Dale Ofsoske urges early November 24 until Tuesday, nomination for the vacant NRC seat December 22.

Labour weekend proved the popularity of our region’s ‘crown jewel’ of recreation, Kai Iwi Lakes.

Now, ahead of the upcoming tourist season at the lakes, the Kaipara District Council and Te Roroa have joined forces to improve the area.

“There’s been a lot of exciting mahi happening in Taharoa Domain recently,” says the KDC’s parks department.

“This year, our parks team and their contractors have planted more than 12,500 native trees as part of a regenerative planting plan. A successful pest cull has been undertaken around the Kai Iwi Lakes area.

“Northland Regional Council has also completed the first stage of their wilding conifer control efforts and continued their predator trapping programme. There are plans to plant another 10,000 native plants in the domain next year, once the weather permits.”

There are also extra people hard at work this year above and beyond the parks team. Eleven members of Te Roroa’s accelerated work package have pitched in, removing pest plants like acacia, wattle and gorse, as well as others on the Northland Regional Council’s pest plant list, a type of ‘most wanted’ register for invasive species. Parks oversight said that it

is slow and painstaking work. However, with pest species removed the native plants, which should thrive around the lakes, are getting more breathing room and establishing themselves.

Moreover, the accelerated work scheme, part of the Te Tai Tokerau Redeployment package, a Covid economic response initiative, has provided real jobs and income for those involved. At the same time, all involved are working hard to preserve the natural character and biodiversity of a place enjoyed by thousands of visitors each year. The work is expected to take five months, with approximately another month or so to go. ¢

A period of disrupted maritime radio service in the Kaipara Harbour has come to a close at the end of October, with VHF Channel 07 now confirmed as the communications lifeline to the area’s Coastguard.

Electricity consumers are to get a $10.2 million handout for the second successive year, including 16,000 Kaipara households, thanks to Northpower and the Northpower Trust, as it marks its 90th year in business.

Coastguard media spokespeople say that the move of channel seven to the Kaipara will help ensure that lives are saved this summer, as the emergency channel covers one of the most treacherous harbour bars in the country.

2020 Northland Rescue Chopper appeal lifts-off The annual fundraising appeal for the Northland Rescue Helicopter service is underway! We’ve been sponsoring the service since 1998 and Northpower and Top Energy will to match public donations this year dollar for dollar up to $200k.

The 2019 appeal raised just under $250k and General Manager of the service, Vanessa Furze, is hoping to raise a similar amount again in 2020.

“It’s been a challenging year for us all and to top it off, we are tracking for our busiest year on record which will see us fly close to 1000 missions this year.

“As our mission numbers increase, our operational costs grow higher, so we rely on donations from members of the public.”

Northpower Chief Executive Andrew McLeod says the annual fundraising campaign is a good reminder of how important the Northland Rescue Helicopter service is to the Northland community.

“It is very reassuring to know that we have a world class air ambulance service right here on our door step, ready to save lives 24/7.

Dargaville RSA will provide an opportunity for locals to express their respect for the men and women who have served in our armed forces this November.

On November 15, Paradise Road, just over the hill from Dargaville, will be the site of a five-kilometre off-road loop, open to all comers on two-wheelers and quads.

President David Fagan confirms that Armistice Day, internationally observed as the end of the first world war, will be honoured at the Dargaville clubrooms on November 11, at 11am, with dignitaries in attendance and all invited. Those unable to attend due to work commitments can do as many of our allied nations do, by observing a minute’s contemplative silence at 11am on the 11th to reflect on the sacrifice of those who served to ensure our freedoms.

Covid put a stop to plans for large gatherings to properly show our respects for these milestones of remembrance.

In July, the Ministry for the Environment declared that all farm plastics sold in New Zealand would have to be recycled or reused, and it has now made two major grants to help this become a reality.

The first will assist in devising a scheme to collect farm plastics that are currently uneconomical to recycle.

These include fertiliser sacks, feed sacks and bulk bags. The second will help the on-farm plastic recycling scheme Plasback purchase baling and wrapping equipment so it can transport waste plastic more cheaply.

The government’s 2020 declaration puts the onus of recycling on the whole supply chain, from the manufacturer down to the consumer on the farm.

Plasback manager Chris Hartshorne says the Ministry of the Environment’s Covid Response and Recovery Fund (CRRF) is donating $442,000 to improve its collection efforts, and Plasback will match this amount.

“We will use the $884,000 to buy three new purpose-built balers, five stationary wrappers and three telehandlers. Our balers compact the waste plastic so it can be shipped efficiently for reprocessing. We will install one baler in Northland, one in

the Bay of Plenty and one in South Canterbury. The reason we need them is that it costs too much to ship unbaled plastic long distances. For example, we now ship loose plastic from Northland to Matamata, where it is baled, but this is inefficient. With a baler in Northland, we will be able to reduce the number of trips we make to Matamata by 75 per cent.”

Chris says these efforts are aimed at keeping the cost of collecting plastic from farms as low as possible. The collection fee Plasback charges to collect used silage wrap from the farm gate has not changed in 14 years. Additionally, it’s not just the rural sector who are looking ahead to plastic-neutral recycling.

“We have also had requests to collect plastic from a brewery in Northland, a scaffolding company in Dunedin, and manufacturing companies.

“We are now collecting lots of plastic twine from kiwifruit growers,” says Chris.

Agrecovery commercial manager Richard Carroll says the Waste Management Fund is contributing $178,200 so that Agrecovery can develop a preferred product stewardship scheme for farm plastic.

“This project will bolster existing recycling services for farmers and growers, like the ones Agrecovery provides for agrichemicals and Plasback provides for silage and bale wrap.” ¢

Stopping that milk drop

As pasture starts to mature in warm summer temperatures, a drop in milk production typically follows due to decreasing protein levels in the grass.

Increased fibre levels also drive down the digestibility of the pasture. Strategic supplement of a certain protein type just as the milk production curve falls away can help maintain higher levels cost-effectively.

If milk production is falling because of maturing grass, the type of protein supplement is very important. Milking cows respond particularly well to slow rumen degradable protein, provided they are well fed. Rumen microbes use the rumen degradable protein, and they also have a requirement for non-protein nitrogen (NPN).

If NPN can be fed in a way that slows down its release in the rumen, this can present a cost-effective way of maintaining or increasing milk production at this time of year.

Supplementing with controlled-release NPN (Optisync™, Alltech) promotes proliferation of rumen bacteria, which has a two-fold effect. Firstly, greater microbial populations in the rumen break down more fibre in the feed, thus releasing more energy from the diet.

The second effect of a larger microbial population is the increased supply of protein and essential amino acids to the hindgut.

Microbial protein production should be a target for all farmers, as microbial protein has a very desirable profile of key amino acids. In summary, protein deficiency often occurs during the summer as grass matures. In

some places in Northland, this seems to be coming earlier and earlier.

Even where pasture is in abundance, assessment should be made of quality.
