Kaipara iwi are rejecting support claims for the planned Auckland rubbish landfill in the Dome Valley, in a Waste Management move to fast-track the dump and its perceived threat to the Kaipara Harbour. “This is a treaty settlement that has gone seriously wrong from the outset. Members of the tribe living over 300km away are in control, and the environmental impacts of the landfill will not affect them,” says Fight the Tip executive member and Tinopai Resource Management Unit director, Mikaera Miru. “In Waste Management’s fast-track application they have quoted Mook Hohneck from the Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust claiming ‘Ngāti Manuhiri supports the Dome Valley landfill’.” Mr Miru said Mr Hohneck stated at a public hui ‘that it would be over his dead

body that the Dome valley landfill would be built’, but when Waste Management promoted remedial money and houses he was the first to agree, undermining unity of all the community opposed to the landfill. “In fact, Annie Baines the chairperson of Omaha Marae has advised in a public hui that Ngāti Manuhiri rank and file members are opposed to the landfill. This is a serious injustice and an environmental ticking time bomb for the second-largest harbour on earth. “The trust deed has been breached regarding major transactions with serious social and environmental consequences.

An application has been before the Māori Land Court for five years waiting for a hearing date to address these matters. “If justice is really a fundamental principle of our judicial system then Waste Management’s landfill application should be subject to the outcome of this matter in the Māori Land Court as should the fast-track application.” While the dump support issue is awaiting the Māori Land Court, Forest and Bird’s appeal against Waste Management’s destruction of 12km of coastal waterways is currently underway in the Appeal Court in Wellington. ¢

Veterans of Vietnam respected u by Andy Bryenton

On August 18 1966, New Zealand and Australian soldiers fought a crucial engagement against overwhelming numbers of North Vietnamese combatants, in what would become known as the Battle of Long Tan.

p Sixty years to the day since the Battle of Long Tan, Vietnam veterans were honoured in Dargaville on August 18

August 18, is the date when veterans of the Vietnam War are honoured and their service commemorated. In Dargaville, the RSA organised a ceremony to pay respect to the servicepeople who volunteered to serve their country. On the morning of Tuesday, August 18, a crowd gathered at the town’s hilltop war memorial and cemetery to lay a wreath and salute their comrades. The guest speaker was Regan Cherington, himself a military officer and a member of a family with a service tradition dating back to the Battle of Ruapekapeka. He acknowledged RSA president Peter Roberts and made an address emphasising the sacrifice and duty of those who volunteered in the conflict in Vietnam. “It is fitting that we gather in reflection and remembrance of those who have fallen and those who have served in South

Vietnam,” said Mr Cherington. “Today, we honour a generation who answered the call when the nation asked.” Roughly 3,900 military personnel went to Vietnam from New Zealand, alongside 200 civilians. In total, 187 were wounded and 37 did not return, making the ultimate sacrifice. It’s a conflict often misunderstood and understated, seen through the cultural lens of the US experience, but commemorations such as those undertaken last week prove that the New Zealand contingent who served in Vietnam fought a very real, personal war. They returned to sometimes cruel indifference from politicians, and from some fellow citizens, but today receive the same utmost respect paid to all soldiers, sailors, aviators and medical servicepeople who have answered the nation’s call in conflicts worldwide. ¢

Aged care is health care

Aged Care Association CEO Tracey Martin addressed Grey Power members last Friday at its monthly meeting to talk about the needs of elderly health care.

While most young entrepreneurs stick to selling lemonade, for sixyear-old Charli Browne, a homemade beverage is an extra touch for her service of teaching children how to use the monkey bars.

With an ageing population and limited infrastructure, Tracey covered several topics facing older residents across the country. From respite care to residential care facilities, and questions from the audience, the talk gave members an informed look at the industry. “People often say, surely retirement villages are getting rich off old people, and it is because they think of retirement villages getting rich on television. “Many elderly people have been homeowners, and one of the things we know if we are to own our homes for 15 to 20 years is that we are going to have to be p Grey Power Kaipara members were grateful to the Honourable Tracey Martin for speaking about issues maintained. Community legends live among us u by Andy Bryenton

The Kaipara Citizens Awards have seen many memorable recipients through the years, but the list of 2026 award-winners may be the longest honour roll of good neighbours ever seen on the podium. “The citizens awards are truly important, as they shine a light on those who give so much to our communities,” said mayor Jonathan Larsen. “They help to make Kaipara a better place for everyone. Time and again, I see examples of generosity, resilience and community spirit.” Four accolades have been given to citizens under the Extraordinary Service by a Newcomer to the Kaipara District Award category. These are people who have made the district their home, and have pitched in to make it a better place to live. Clive Hebben was honoured for helping to build the Mangawhai Lions Club, a founding member who has seen it grow from strength to strength. He’s also one of the forces behind the Mangawhai Food and Wine Festival. “He knows everyone, helps everyone and is always ready with a smile,” said his nominators. Colin Jackson was lauded for helping to establish the Learn to Sail Mangawhai sailing club, introducing young people to maritime sports and recreation in a way that has built strong community bonds. “Mangawhai kids are so lucky to have his dedication,” said the group of local

people who put his name forward. Jemma O’Donnell has been of outstanding support to the Marmaranui Playcentre, helping them secure gratefully received funding and grants, as well as being a pillar of the Dargaville swimming community, and a founding instigator of the Dargaville Athletics Club. “She doesn’t ever hesitate to step in to help others when they are in need,” said Gemma’s nominators. Lee Greer, is another of the founders of the Dargaville Athletics Club, who also gives freely of his time and expertise to help young people get into surf lifesaving. Baylys Beach is safer, and the Little Nippers programme thriving, thanks in part to his dedication. “He’s the kind who just gets stuck in, and just gets it done,” said Marni Stewart, who was one of those who put Lee forward for an award. Five people were granted the Long Term Extraordinary Service Award, for persistent and determined long-term support for community initiatives across Kaipara . Doug Lloyd has devoted many years of service to Mangawhai and its unique coastal environment, including a 21-year

tenure as chair of the executive committee of the Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society. He’s also current chair of the Mangawhai Matters group, once again advocating for growth and environmental issues, and has served on the Mangawhai Domain Committee. Ken Rayward, former citizens award recipient and nominator for Doug, noted that the health of the harbour is the wealth of Mangawhai, and Doug is a tireless guardian of that health. John Phillips has devoted his time and experience to making the Northland Field Days a success for 28 years, and as the current president of this immense rural

community event, he’s instrumental in every aspect, from the commencement speech to the tractor pull and everything in between. His efforts have driven economic success and national recognition for the biggest outdoor show in the north. For more than 40 years, Stella Clyde has quietly and consistently supported her community through a wide range of projects and organisations, including as trustee and volunteer at Maungatūroto Op Shop, trustee and secretary of Paparoa County Depot Trust, member and secretary of Maungatūroto and Districts Rotary Club, a volunteer for Ōtamatea HarbourCare Society, and a long-serving

Town hall future in focus

u by Andy Bryenton

A meeting called by the Dargaville Ratepayers and Residents Association brought discussion and consensus on issues surrounding the demolition and eventual replacement of the town’s civic hub.

p Ross Newlove gave special thanks to his wife for supporting him in many charitable endeavours, saying “we work as a team”

volunteer of North Kaipara Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Wayne Price was applauded for his work in making Mangawhai a safer place, as one of the founders of the Mangawhai Community Patrol. A supporter of this grassroots cause since 2016, Wayne has also pitched in with efforts to ensure that more locals know what to do in a first aid emergency. He has also served on the Northland District Committee of Community Patrols New Zealand. Sue Clayton is a volunteer and board member of the Mangawhai Op Shop, is strongly involved with the harbour restoration society, and provides IT support for the Mangawhai Club and marketing for the Mangawhai Museum’s movie night. By offering her skills, time and experience to make community groups run more smoothly, she’s helped these volunteer organisations be more effective in assisting their fellow citizens. Two special Mayoral Awards were personally presented by mayor Jonathan

Larsen, both of them champions of local democracy and representation. Mark Farnsworth served for four decades in roles with the Hobson County Council, and later the Northland Regional Council, dedicating those years of democratic representation to the cause of good governance, environmental management, education and community wellbeing. While unable to attend, Mark sent a message which resonated with all recipients: “In volunteering one does not expect to be acknowledged, but it’s very nice when it happens.” Ross Newlove has a list of organisations, groups and clubs to thank for his well-deserved nomination. He has made a positive impact on everything from the Kaipara District Council to the Dargaville Museum, Northland Field Days, the Scouts and the Northern Wairoa RSA. On committees, raising funds, administrating or as a volunteer, Ross has made an enduring contribution to the district. ¢

Three local councillors, deputy mayor Gordon Lambeth, Joesephine Nathan and Snow Tane, answered the call to front up to a public meeting called by concerned citizen-advocate Gordon Walker last week, as the deadline for demolition approaches. What followed was a frank discussion of the reasons for the need to deconstruct the Northern Wairoa War Memorial Hall, and the importance of replacing it with a suitable alternative. “We are deeply concerned that we may lose our town hall, a vital community asset,” said Mr Walker. Councillors concurred, with Ms Nathan stating that “we need something new, and we deserve something new.” A point agreed upon by both citizens and elected members was the lack of maintenance going back to previous administrations, at least to 2018, was responsible in part for the failure of the current structure. This failure was detailed in reports tabled by Mr Walker and deputy mayor Lambeth, and led to a core argument of the meeting — would it be more cost-effective to repair the existing hall and annexe or build from a blank slate? Figures presented suggest that a repair could cost $5.5 million. However,

p Gordon Walker, DRRA spokesperson

Mr Lambeth cautioned that once work began, further damage might be found, sending the final bill higher. A new build was colloquially benchmarked at the meeting against the Tangiterōria complex, built in 2020, which cost approximately $3.5 million. It was accepted that inflationary pressures will have had an effect since then. Going forward, Mr Lambeth indicated that a community trust is a likely path for securing funding for a new town hall. This trust would be empanelled from “leading citizens with a track record of successfully working on trusts and boards.” A hall built by such a trust would be retained by the community regardless of future council amalgamation plans, and critically, oversight for maintenance would be ensured. ¢

With reference to your recent editorial, Sisyphus Shrugged, published on August 11 2026, encouraging people to vote in the upcoming election. I would agree, but when we are only given various flavours of ice-cream to choose from, and what we really want is some wholesome food, sadly, it doesn’t really feel like we do have any real choice. Many of us only reluctantly get to choose something we are not wanting, yet again. I am quite ignorant with regards to any laws relating to politics or voting, but I can see that the current system is failing the people miserably and some kind of substantial change needs to happen for there to be any improvement. Things only seem to be going from bad to worse no matter which of the political parties is in charge. Is it possible to make a vote of no confidence (in any of the current parties) so as to establish some deeper change in the system? I would love to hear other peoples’ thoughts on this, and if this is even something that can be done, and if so how? It would be great to see systems run from the bottom up. What do other people think? Susan Te Kōpuru

Democratic dignity I think that every New Zealander should be concerned about the loss of democracy — and freedom — in our country. For example, the central government plans to abolish our democratically-elected district councils just to please the large foreign contracting companies. I am proud of the Kaipara District Council for fighting this proposal, and I would like to personally support them with a rates revolt (should amalgamation be forced). Policies affecting our democracy must be decided by a referendum. What do others think? Lance Bullock Dargaville

EDITORIAL by guest columnist Rayden Gegera

Youth and the ballot box Did you know that young people are one of the groups that are less likely to vote in New Zealand elections? In the 2023 election 74.2% of 18–24-year-olds who were enrolled voted — compared to 77.5% overall. This makes me question why people are talking about lowering the voting age to 16, at a time when a lot of young people who can already vote, don’t. I’m 16 myself, and I don’t think lowering the voting age is the answer. At 16, most people are still trying to figure out who they are, and what they want to do in the future. That’s not a bad thing, but voting is still a pretty big responsibility, and it can have a major impact on the country we live in. Another reason a lot of young people don’t vote is because politics can be confusing, and sometimes, it feels like it has nothing to do with us. There are so many parties and politicians that it can be a bit overwhelming trying to understand what everyone stands for. I think a better idea is to get younger people interested in politics before giving them the responsibility of voting. Schools should teach young people more about how voting works, and what different political parties actually do. In other countries, this is called ‘civics’ and is a compulsory class. Schools could also teach students how to find reliable information and understand what politicians are actually

promising, so that when someone turns 18, they have a better understanding of politics and can make their own decisions based on facts. Lowering the voting age to 16 won’t automatically make younger people more interested in voting or politics. It could just mean more people have the chance to vote but decide not to. In the 2023 election there were 84,462 people between the ages of 18–24 enrolled who did not vote, which shows that having the right to vote doesn’t mean everyone will use it. Making voting compulsory, as Australia does, is a step too far in my opinion. Young people should have a voice, but I think waiting until 18 gives us more time to understand politics and figure out what we believe. If we want more young people to vote, then we should help them understand why voting matters instead of just lowering the age. Giving young people better political education could help them feel more confident about voting when they are old enough to take part. ¢ [Editor’s note: Rayden Gegera is a student at Ruawai College, taking part in a work experience placement with the Kaipara Lifestyler this week. As a young person looking at the election debate from outside of the current voting age, his viewpoint on discussions to lower the age of participation comes from lived experience.]

Spring Spruce Up Solar panels and easier installation u by Andy Bryenton

It’s a bold ambition: ACT leader David Seymour’s crusade against ‘red tape’ has seen an announcement last week that New Zealand might soon be the easiest place in the developed world to install solar panels. The coalition government has agreed to progress the recommendations of a report from the Ministry for Regulation, which blasted the consent process for photovoltaic solar in residential and small-scale applications, saying that some simple installs require up to six sign-offs and visits from four inspectors. That’s too much, according to Mr Seymour

WE ARE YOUR PROFESSIONALS Joint harbour protection u by Paul Campbell

Protecting the Kaipara Harbour from farm run-off is proceeding swiftly in a joint effort by Fonterra and Kaipara Moana Remediation, funding 149 separate farms across the catchment in a project aimed at ultimately halving tonnes of silt getting into the waterway. Donnellys Crossing dairy farmers Greg and Claire Collins have completed 1.8km of fencing to protect 1.16ha of unproductive land, where 4,450 native plants are now thriving with the support of the KMR/Fonterra collaboration. “It is very much a stewardship thing. We are caretakers of the land. We want to leave our slice of paradise in better shape than we found it. Dairy farming and environmental care don’t have to be mutually exclusive,” say Greg and Claire. “When we started doing this, our dairy farming mates thought we were mad because we fenced off three mouthfuls of grass. Still, we do it for two sound reasons: environmental and ease of stock and farm management.” Tītoki farmers John and Jenny Waterhouse have planted an additional 5,750 native plants within the fencing of 1.4km of waterways, wetlands and drains across 1.2ha within their 211ha dairying operation. “Our farm is quite unique, as it is at the end of a peninsula and bordered by

Job placement success

u by Paul Campbell

Fifteen community-led projects, from planning for climate adaptation to installing solar infrastructure on marae, are receiving a total of $480,000 funding through the latest round of Northland Regional Council’s Climate Resilient Communities Fund. The third tranche of investment from the fund, provides support for projects that will strengthen climate resilience in communities from the Far North to Kaipara focussed on energy, water, food systems, ecological restoration and climate adaptation planning. This year, the fund had $480,000 available for allocation but received an overwhelming response from communities, with 90 applications seeking a combined $3.5 million. NRC chair Pita Tipene says the level of demand highlights both the growing awareness of climate risks and the willingness of communities to take practical action now to build resilience for future generations. “Climate resilience is strongest when it is built locally. These projects are community-led, grounded in local knowledge and priorities, and focussed on creating solutions that work.

“The 15 projects funded demonstrate significant potential to make a real difference in their communities while contributing to wider resilience.” In Kaipara, grants for water resilience go to Future Ready Farms ($39,725), supporting regenerative and climateadaptive farming practices across the Kaipara District, and to Mangawhai Distal Spit Planting Programme ($18,000) — restoring the Mangawhai Harbour spit using locally-sourced native plants. The fund, since inception, has now invested approximately $1.65 million across 59 community-led projects. A report by Business and Economic Research Limited has found for every $1 invested by NRC, the fund generates an estimated $4.59 million in value for Northland. “Food, water, energy, environmental restoration, and community capability reinforce one another to build stronger, more self-reliant communities.” ¢

The good times roll on u by Andy Bryenton

Toyota celebrates 60 years of presence in New Zealand for 2026, and it’s a birthday which has a special resonance with millions of Kiwi motorists. “Our place in New Zealand has been shaped over time by listening to customers, understanding how they live and work, and earning their trust through our products and the service we deliver. Last week we had the privilege of recognising 11 exceptional Kaipara residents whose dedication, generosity and community spirit help make our district a better place. Congratulations and thank you to all of this year’s Citizens Award recipients. Your efforts make a real difference to Kaipara.

Dry summer on the radar

Earth Sciences New Zealand has confirmed El Niño conditions have been reached in the tropical Pacific and are expected to affect New Zealand’s weather over summer. For Kaipara, that can mean drier soils, an increased risk of drought conditions later in the season, and higher demand for water supplies. Recent improvements to water networks in Kaipara will reduce water loss through leaks and improve reliability of water supply, however low rainfall = low supply. If water supply can’t meet demand, residents on town supply may be asked to use less water or follow restrictions to help protect supply for everyone. Now is a good time to check your property for dripping taps, leaking toilets or hidden pipe leaks. If you spot a leak on the public network, call us right away so we can fix it before too much water is lost.

Honda has released its latest new bike, the 2026 CB1000F, and it’s a motorcycle that combines the style of Honda’s retro-era bikes with the modern technology and performance of bikes today. The Honda CB1000F is a 1,000cc liquid-cooled four-cylinder motorcycle with a six-speed manual gearbox. Honda says the engine provides 91kW of power at 9,000rpm and 103Nm of torque at 8,000rpm. The engine has been engineered to give the bike more power and push at lower and middle engine speeds, allowing the machine to achieve stable, effortless cruising speeds. The new CB is designed to feel more exciting and usable in everyday riding, with the company stating that the engine has been tuned to give more character in the midrange. Moreover, the most noticeable thing isn’t the performance of the big Honda itself — it’s the actual look of the bike and the impression it gives off. Honda has given the bike a retro design inspired by its older companion, the racewinning original CB of the ‘70s. The inspiration goes back to the 1979 CB750F, which became well known through American AMA Superbike racing. Honda has taken the racing legend that helped shape the golden era of superbike competition and turned it into a modern roadster. Honda describes the CB1000F as a balanced roadster that is made to handle like a middleweight bike, while giving the rider the feel of a bigger

it is a way of showing that an old-school design does not have to stay in the past, as it can still work as a modern motorcycle. With it coming to New Zealand around prime riding season, new or older bikers better be prepared to give it a go. The best of both worlds rarely looked so appealing. ¢

That’s perfect for the open Kiwi road, where a big 1,000cc eats up the kilometres. “The CB1000F is a tribute to one of the most iconic eras in Honda motorcycling,” said American Honda Motor Company experiential marketing manager Colin Miller. We are rapidly approaching a sad, but exciting milestone. The ANZAC Theatre is temporarily closing to allow for the demolition of the town hall and annex. The building that the theatre is in will stay but the demolition happening right next door means that everyone needs to keep clear for safety reasons.

Our last day of playing movies will be Sunday the 30th of August. Once we know what the timeline and plan for reopening is, we will be sure to share.

2026 AGM Sunday 20th September at 3.00pm Held at Dargaville Little Theatre To discuss Trust and cinema business There will be NO talk about the demolition
