“Good progress is being made on the strategy review and reiterated that the benefits from those changes will take time to flow through into the co-op’s financial performance,” said Fonterra chief executive Miles Hurrell.

“I appreciate that our farmers and unit holders want clarity on our new strategy and expect a decent return on their investment. We are on track to share our new strategy in September. We are getting on and making decisions to reduce complexity and simplify our business so we can focus on where we have competitive advantages.

“Farmers and unit holders can expect to see some fluctuation in our earnings over the next couple of years, and there will be one-off transactions and adjustments, some positive, some negative as we reset the business and deliver on our new strategy.

“We are committed to keeping people updated as we make progress. We are commencing a strategic review of our two wholly-owned farm-hubs in China. We have agreed with our partner Nestle, to review options for the future ownership of our Dairy Partners Americas Brazil joint venture, including a potential sale of respective stakes and we are closing our Dennington site in Australia.

“These decisions relate to our new strategic direction. In particular, prioritising our New Zealand milk supply and simplifying our global portfolio, which, as we have said previously, requires us to review every part of business to ensure it meets the needs of the co-op today.

“We have contributed to China’s dairy industry by developing high-quality model farms and showing there is a valuable

Highlighting region’s agriculture

Aimed at shining a light on Hawke’s Bay’s agricultural expertise and leading on-farm research and innovation, trustees are being sought for a new farming initiative.

The Future Farming Charitable Trust is an independent trust that has been set up with seed funding from the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council through its last Long Term Plan.

Hawke’s Bay regional councillor and chairman of the Future Farming Initiative Working Group Tom Belford says he’s delighted the regional council has been able to fund getting this exciting new initiative off the ground.

“The trust’s goal is to highlight Hawke’s Bay’s existing and emerging agricultural expertise and create a local hub of knowledge, research and education to ensure the health of the region’s soil and water, communities and farmers into the future,” says

Councillor Belford. “Serving on the trust is a great opportunity to add value to an exciting Hawke’s Bay initiative, helping to identify and promote a range of solutions to ensure environmentally sustainable and profitable farming into our region’s future.

“The trust will be made up of six to eight voluntary trustees from Hawke’s Bay with a diverse mix of primary sector backgrounds and a cross-section of skills.”

FORGING A CAREER

by Ann van Engelen Joseph Watts grew up in the township of Waipukurau with no agricultural experience until he was in his early twenties.

J

oseph has several qualifications from Massey University, including a Graduate Diploma in Rural Studies, and a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science. He represented New Zealand in squash between 2008 and 2013, achieving a world ranking of 169.

“I really enjoy the physical aspect of playing squash. The sport took me to Australia and around New Zealand, which was exciting,” said Joseph.

“I am the oldest of eight children, and I never really knew anything about agriculture when I was younger. I didn’t know the difference between a ewe and a ram until I was 23 years old, but I did work in a factory in Palmerston North

that processed paua. My wife Lucy is a vet, and the first job she got out of uni was at Raetihi. I moved with her, and there weren’t many options except shear sheep or help on farms. The shearing was a great transition coming from a professional sports career as I was able to keep the competitive side going and get paid for what I enjoyed.

“Eventually one of our friends suggested I become a field technician and I did. We aim to add value by giving good agronomic advice and help farmers achieve their production goals. I have been a field rep for nearly a year now, and I really enjoy the good balance between the people and agronomic science side

We run 22 crossbred heifers and steers as well as two horses. They are pretty easy going and it has been a bit of fun learning how easily they can go through

we wanted because of the good grass growth, so the garage and carport are currently housing the remainder.

The PGG Wrightson technical field representative won the East Coast FMG Young Farmer of the Year regional final.

He was named the most tech-savvy contestant, and took home awards for outstanding leadership skills and showcasing innovation.

“I obviously spend too much time on my phone, and my job exposes me to a lot of new technology coming through. I really like the use of EM soil mapping. It is becoming a big part

of the environmental side of farming and maps paddocks out to smaller management zones, so it shows if one needs more fertiliser than another and we are minimising use where possible and applying it more strategically.

“The competition win was lucky for me; my favourite module was shearing a sheep. I am pretty stoked, but a bit nervous, I don’t have long to prepare for the grand final in July,” said Joseph.

“The more skills I can pick up along the way, the better. The contest is a cool event that NZ Young Farmers runs, which members can be part of. I am a member

of the Tikokino Young Farmers Club, and we have a great support network there.

I have heard that there will be a lot of local supporters at the event.

“Being married to a vet is great; I have become a very good vet nurse. It is good getting to see the other side of the industry that is not often seen. A lot of people want to be a vet, but the fact is although most go into the job with the idea of saving as many animals as they can, they spend a huge amount of time dealing with animals they can’t save.

It is actually an extremely emotionally taxing job, and they do more than people

think because they do care about each animal. I feel the biggest difference I can make in the industry is by helping out across a number of farms or a larger agricultural organisation. Lucy and I enjoy being on our own block of land, but I am ambitious about influencing change across the whole industry rather than just our single farm.

“Farmers in general are doing an amazing job and they are incredible at producing quality food but we are not that good at telling people about it. We need to back our food producers more and tell help them to tell their stories.”

F

encing, stock work and dog handling were also skills the 20-year-old learned during his time at the station.

“Waipaoa Station is a 1,760-hectare effective property carrying 16,000 stock units, consisting of sheep and cattle,” says Jack.

“The station runs a two-year cadetship, which was set up in 2007, and takes just five new cadets each year.

The demand for places is exceptionally high, and the positions are very coveted.

It was a privilege to be accepted, and I graduated last December — my time there was invaluable. I grew up on a 650-hectare sheep and beef farm near

Dannevirke, but my family now farms near Waipukurau. I went to boarding school at Napier Boys’ High School and was a member of the school’s TeenAg club. I was attracted to Waipaoa Station because of its experienced tutors. It is an awesome training ground.

“I wanted to follow farming because I love the variety of work and being outside with animals and different people.

“Working with the dogs is the best.

In the first year, we were each given an eight-week-old heading pup to break in, and in the second year, we got a 12-month-old huntaway to train. The tutors aim to get you work-ready so you can hit the ground running as soon as

you graduate.” Jack was named the top cadet in 2018, and says what was taught in the classroom can be applied out in the paddock.

“As cadets, we graduate with several qualifications. In your first year, an average day might include fencing, tractor work and fixing a water pipe.

The following year involves a lot of stock handling and working with your dogs.

“Cadets come from across New Zealand; you don’t have to be off a farm, people are accepted from all backgrounds. A girl in my year grew up in the city — you just have to show you are keen. You submit a curriculum vitae and a cover letter. Then you get a 15-minute interview, and that is your time to shine. It is actually a bit of a daunting experience because you get interviewed by an eight-member board.

“Senior cadets are paired with a firstyear student and act as mentors, and we live in a hostel with a full-time cook.

We all sit down for dinner at the end of the day at the same time and have a yarn. It is a good time to catch up and reflect on what has happened during the day.”

Jack is now in his first year of a Bachelor of Agriculture (Commerce) at Lincoln University in Canterbury.

“On the weekends I am doing general farm work, for Duncan Calder. He has two farms, one next to Mt White station in Canterbury and the other is up the Lewis Pass. When I have finished my

study, I plan to head back home as the farming operations up North are more intense.

“Shearing at Waipaoa was great. We spent time with world-class shearers Dion King, Bill Hale and Murray Henderson as trainers. These guys are the world’s best, and we were privileged to have them pass on their skills to us.

They gave us tips on footwork, body positioning and handpiece set-up. These were really helpful.

“We had 650 breeding cows, and we did the 12-month thing with them including calf marking, weaning, and drenching. It is steep hill country, and everything is pasture fed.

“When I complete my degree I will have a variety of options with the goal eventually being above farm management.

“I will work my way through the ranks and want to go shepherding, be a stock manager and farm manager.

“People who want to do the cadetship should work weekends and on holidays away from the family farm if they are on one so they get other experience.

“Coming to Lincoln is certainly a change of lifestyle, but I think I have adjusted all right. Waipaoa Station is one of a handful of farms offering cadet training programmes and what I learned there is proving to be really relevant and beneficial to my studies now.”

Honey season a mixed bag

The 2017/18 honey season was a mixed bag for New Zealand beekeepers with honey volumes and hive yields up by 35 per cent and 21 per cent respectively over the 2016/17 season.

Average honey prices were lower than the previous year for most honey types apart from monofloral manuka honey, as outlined in this year’s Ministry for Primary Industries 2018 Apiculture Monitoring Programme Report.

“The softening in prices seen in the 2017/18 year has come after more than 10 years of increasing value for the majority of all New Zealand honey on the international market,” says chief executive of Apiculture New Zealand, Karin Kos. “Unfortunately, we are continuing to see falling prices and sluggish sales during the 2018/19 year as we compete with global honey that typically sells for lower rates than our beekeepers have received over the last four to five seasons. The market downturn has had a significant impact on the profitability of many beekeeping businesses as a result.”

While total registered hive numbers are up 11 per cent, and registered

beekeeping enterprises are up nine per cent, Ms Kos says it is unlikely this growth, particularly in the commercial sector, will continue given current market conditions.

“We can expect to see some rationalisation during the next year as beekeepers consider their options in this tough market. The report highlighted the increased demand for pollination services with the expansion in several horticulture sectors including kiwifruit, apples, avocados, stonefruit and blueberries.

“The growth of pollination services is good news for our industry, as it does provide another source of income for beekeepers.”

While the market has been challenging, honey export sales continued to rise with a six per cent increase in 2017/18 to $348 million, driven by both higher export volumes and prices, with export volumes to the United States of America rising sharply

Electric tools come of age

No so long ago petrol was king when it came to handling outdoor power, and the average tradesperson would carry a can of twostroke mix everywhere.

Times have changed, and there are now some serious tools which run exclusively off electricity, raising the possibility of charging up a whole array of batteries direct via inverter from the ute or van itself. These are no weak or retiring versions of their petrol counterparts either. Here are three of the best, which are beloved of modern trade professionals, and might be a good match around the farm as well.

Stihl invented the world’s first electric cut off saw specifically for those circumstances where it’s too far to run an extension cable. Compact and lighter than its petrol opposite number, the TSA 230 can cut tiles to size, bricks for masonry projects, and even comes with an abrasive wheel to slice steel like a roast dinner. Weighing in at 3.9 kilograms, the TSA 230 can cut to a depth of 70mm and keep going continually for up to 15 minutes on a

single battery. That’s a quarter hour of powering through stone and steel, which is pretty impressive.

Makita has made cordless drills for years now, but they have upped the ante with the super powerful DHR 242Z. A hammer drill, which is as serious as those that run a cable or even a small petrol motor, this monster weighs far less than you might think and can tackle drilling tasks into the toughest materials. It’s also designed to fit Makita’s portable dust extraction system, and it has an easy to operate slide chuck for quick switch-out of bits.

Husqvarna is as at home with chainsaws as Makita are with drills, but once again their cordless range is a step up in practicality and power. Take, for example, the 535i XP, a chainsaw, which weighs less than its petrol stablemates but has been designed with the carpenter and tradie in mind

From the days of the old draught horse, when the great guilds of tradespeople were established (the most famous of which went on to become the modern charitable society, the Freemasons) through to colonial times, when farmers called in traction engines to shuttle plough their fields and process hay into bales, it’s been the same story.

Help! We have a job to do, time is not on our side, and we don’t have the specialist tools and expertise to go it alone. What all of these people have needed, from the horse rider looking for a mobile farrier through to the medieval king sending out for engineers to make his castle impregnable to Vikings, is a mobile workshop. These days there’s not much call for massive fortifications, as Vikings are fairly thin on the ground.

When the movie industry needs a model castle, or, more prosaically, when the average farmer needs tractor repairs, a new water heater or an electrical fix, they turn to the tradesman’s best friend, the white van. Note that the colour can

change according to signwriting and branding, but the definition is as generic as ‘sticky tape’. There is a particular type of vehicle, which is purpose-built for western tradespeople to use as a combination office, tea break room, workshop and toolbox.

Robbers from the ‘old firm’ days when the Kray brothers ruled the London underworld loved how much loot you could pack in the nondescript but lively Transit; the law loved how many constables you could ferry to a fracas in the back. One of these 1960s Transits holds the record for longest service. It’s still on the road today after going all the way round the clock, a distance comparable to a moon mission, and it belongs to a plumbing firm in (appropriately) Bath, England.

Here in New Zealand, the Transit Van and its opposite number from the Holden and General Motors stable, the venerable Bedford J series, have been transformed into everything from farming flat decks to ambulances. You can still see Bedford ambulance camper vans at holiday hot spots each summer, next to another mobile workshop on wheels, the ice cream truck. The Japanese and Korean marques have made their mark in recent decades, with the Hiace, L300 and their ilk muscling into a territory where Ford still produces a dominant product.

Nowadays, the farmer or business owner in need of fast response can summon a mobile welder, tyre service, diesel mechanic, or builder with their mobile phone. The man in the van is less likely to get lost along the way thanks to GPS. There have been some big advances in miniaturising the gear, which slides into the back of these high-

mileage, hard-working vans, meaning that more tools can be powered from a simple inverter and battery array.

The big jobs sometimes require a professional approach, especially when it comes to those tasks that are a bit out of the ordinary. It is doubly true for those that take place off the ground, such as repairing roofing and guttering or taking care of overgrown trees.

According to ACC statistics, the most dangerous thing in the tool shed is not a saw or hammer, but a ladder, with $17 million in injury claims a year recorded from ladder accidents.

That statistic goes up as the age of the ladder user goes up, too; a fact accident analysts put down to the cando attitude of our older generation, who are used to tackling tasks themselves.

Relatively recent changes to the rules about working above a certain height have recognised the perils of falling and of poorly supported surfaces, leading to the requirement for professional tradespeople to erect scaffolding or use a secured harness in many aerial applications. While prudent, this had also added to the time and cost of undertaking such projects, leading many people to try to go it alone.

This time of year is especially busy when it comes to getting off the ground, with gutters to clean, roof leaks to repair and dead tree limbs to cut down before

storms drop them. The overwhelming message from health care providers is to be careful, assess the situation, and in any doubt as to your equipment and abilities, call the professionals.

The reasoning is clear when a 2006 British study is taken into account.

Of 200,000 cases of do-it-yourself injury (in one year, but not the larger population of Great Britain), more than half required time off work, and all, by

definition, required a trip to the doctor.

Assuming that due to injury the job was not completed successfully, that’s 200,000 cases where the expense of time off, recuperation, treatment and medication far outstripped the cost of just picking up the phone and hiring someone who specialises for a living.

The origins of a Kiwi tradition

As far back as most dairy farmers can remember, June 1 has been called Gypsy Day; the time of year when farms changed hands and sharemilkers took to the roads to move to their new pastures for the season.

Digging deeper to find out why this is the case reveals a couple of interesting points. The first of which, of course, is that this day has nothing at all to do with the Roma people of Europe, the original Gypsies, who, along with the Irish Travellers, make up the largest nomadic culture remaining in the developed world. The name is a nod to the way these folk would travel the roadways in ancient times, with all their possessions and their livestock in tow.

It’s a romanticised notion of life on the road, but one that resonated with our colonial forebears, who, once a year would see cows and wagons lining the rural roads as farms changed hands.

Nevertheless, why June 1? The day seems arbitrary, but the effects are real.

Schools see enrolments jump around this time, those tradespeople who renovate homes are busy in the rural heartland, and hundreds of millions of dollars change hands as properties are sold. One theory holds that the timing is to do with the date of cows drying off before calving, but this varies according to climate and stock genetics. Another holds that the date was set in order to

get the new farm squared away before winter struck.

However, the oldest records point to the date set not by farmers but by clerks, at the State Advances Corporation in the 1890s. This body was set up to lend money to settlers for creating new farms, and the powers that be expected their money back as the farm flourished.

June 1 was set as a date different from the end of the corporate year, but also

to enable physical messages to reach London, still the hub of commerce, by ship, before the end of the British business year. In those days of manual transactions, paper deeds and no radio or internet, setting a single day for major farming transactions made it easy to get everyone on the same page.

That’s why June 1 is still a busy time to this day, and why it carries such an interesting name.

Methane reduction unrealistic Deer Industry New Zealand is disappointed by the government’s announced emissions reduction targets for agriculture.

“Under current conditions, these targets would result in significant reductions in stock numbers.” says chair of Deer Industry New Zealand, Dr Ian Walker.

“Even if tools and technologies were available to reduce methane and nitrous oxide in the future, the level of reduction would effectively mean that the agriculture sector was being asked not just to cease its own contribution to global warming, but also offset the contribution of other sectors.

“The deer industry as part of the pastoral sector is prepared to play its part in climate change mitigation.

“We do not deny human-induced climate change nor our responsibility to mitigate.

“The pastoral sector is willing to target net zero global warming impact from agricultural gasses, but the targets for methane announced by the government go beyond net zero global warming impact. DINZ cannot support these targets.

“The rationale for methane to be reduced by anything between 24 per cent and 47 per cent by 2050 has not been made clear to us. We can only assume that the government expects agriculture to make ‘headroom’ for other sectors to continue emitting.”

Dr Walker says this is unfair for the sector, but also a bad choice for New Zealand because in the absence of new mitigation technology a 47 per cent reduction in agricultural methane emissions will require a 47 per cent reduction in pastoral farming outputs.

That could reduce rural employment and export revenues from meat, milk and fibre by half, or about $12 billion a year.

“The government has expressed no plan for how this employment and export revenue could be replaced and New Zealanders’ living standards maintained. Reducing agricultural methane emissions is a temporary solution; it buys time but does not address the fundamental cause of

climate change, which is the release of fossil carbon into the atmosphere.

“The pastoral sector, including DINZ, will continue to support research on agricultural greenhouse gas mitigation options and development of a robust framework to enable farms to transition

to lower emissions. DINZ considers there is little sense in sacrificing New Zealand’s economic backbone when all this does, is delay the need for New Zealand and all other countries to address the fundamental issues of fossil fuel emissions.”

Concentrated potency

In an era when everybody wants to make the next cute, hip, urban-styled micro SUV, one car maker has decided to do things a little differently. Well, it’s the way they’ve been doing it since 1970, when they called their product the LJ (light jeep) 10. You’d know its lineage by another name, especially if you judge an off-roader by its ability rather than its size.

It’s the Suzuki Jimny, and it’s been building a reputation and a niche which few other automakers are willing to challenge, let alone contest for dominance in.

Variant names such as Escudo, Samurai and Sierra have come and gone, but still, there are few examples out there of similar machines.

The Jimny still boasts a ladder chassis like a big, beefy Range Rover.

It even has true four-wheel drive with locking hubs, like a Land Cruiser, and it still has the footprint of a single tennis shoe.It also looks so cute and fierce that it is elevated to the same level as a new Fiat 500 or Mini. This, the pug dog with wheels.

More seriously, the Suzuki resembles like a tiny version of Mercedes-Benz’s G-Wagon. It’s so little that in Japan they fit the Jimny with a 646cc inline 3 and register it as a ‘kei car’; small enough to be allowed on Tokyo streets without a special permit.

Here, they’ve put a ‘massive’ 1,400cc four-banger under the hood, mated it up to an old fashioned, snappy little five-speed manual transmission, and turned the whole thing loose with

proper four-wheel drive. The challenge, here, is not whether the Jimny is cooler than almost any other micro SUV you can name.

It’s whether you can have more fun, with more presence, in the real outdoors, for this little money — sub-
