What do sports look like going forward even after the COVID-19 pandemic has passed? NSGA asked leaders from various national organizations for their insights on topics from the effects on participation to some of the biggest challenges that may arise in the future.

Do you think COVID-19 will affect participation in

Lara: The situation has put every activity in its place. We do not think participation “desire” will be impacted too much, but rather the funds available to participate as well as a desire to know what the “new normal” will be. AYSO is actively working on guidance and scholarship avenues to help close the gap on the potential barriers.

Niehoff: At first the community will be grateful to be back and rally around the fact that we are back to active programs. We feel we must be assertive and louder than ever at being positive and grateful that we are back. After the initial return, we will see a swing back to the middle ground of attitudes to sports from appreciation to competitiveness. We will have to keep perspective and stay in

Do you anticipate any rules/regulations to change as a result?

Goudy: I do not know about sport rule changes as much as custom or ritual changes, like shaking hands or exchanging gifts, may go by the wayside.

Niehoff: In the immediate things will look different. We are releasing (See Page 11) a return to play guidelines and it will be a 3-phase return. In the first phase, we say that there should not be any sharing of the same equipment. That means a baseball or a soccer ball. Going forward there will have to be sanitation all the time, especially with sports that share equipment. Kids will have to bring their own source of hydration. There will have to be point-ofcare testing available. Officials are also looking at what they might need to change. Are they going to be using a whistle? This blows out air that could cause an issue with contamination. Will officials have to use some type of electronic signaling for calls going forward?

Key: I do not see any rule changes specifically unless it is to protect fans or players. We could see a limit to participation attendees for the games. We could possibly change the minimum number of games for a complete season. We are talking about lowering the number of games to be able to say it is a complete season. We want to be able to provide kids a chance to play even if it might be a shorter season. This is for our current spring/summer seasons.

We will allow leagues to extend their season depending on when schools and the economy reopen. For example, if the season is supposed to end at the end of July, then encouraging to extend the season to the end of August. As an organization, we are going to encourage local leagues and international leagues to have a season even if it might be shortened and encouraging them to extend the season if needed. This will allow kids to play and have an outlet.

Cloud: I do not anticipate any rule change proposals. There may be discussions on eligibility waivers for players that missed out on their final year of eligibility.

Lara: We are looking at alternative game models due to player numbers, sideline numbers, officials, safety protocols, interactions, etc. We must consider all of these aspects in the soccer space.

Q:

What do you see as some of the biggest challenges your organization will face in the years ahead after the COVID-19 pandemic ends?

Goudy: Regaining the public trust that it is safe to participate.

Parker: We will continue to adapt to the changes around eligibility and how we recruit and send students to four-year colleges.

Niehoff: We are concerned about participation from the state level. Will we be able to offer active programs from a financial perspective? Can kids continue to play? And if so, can they play 10 | NSGA NOW ÂŽ

We all know we assume risk in sports. How will our society arrive at a reasonable level of tolerance for the risk taken? Who is liable if a kid is tested and is healthy one day, but gets sick the next day after a competition?

We hope that parents and society exercise some common sense when handling a return to sports and the risk that is involved. How does that affect programs? For associations like yourself, you have an obligation to inform, what level of tolerance will society have with information given and knowing they are assuming risk with any activity they participate in. Will people want to sue everybody that gave them information on guidelines, but still got sick from following those. I am also worried about the pace at which individual sport organizations are traveling to get back to playing. This might be too aggressive, as we are still learning about the pandemic, especially in kids. I hope that everybody can exercise prudent common sense about returning to play.

Key: I do not see any major challenges based on being a grassrootsoriented program. Any kid that wants to participate is able. We are not an elite travel league, so the costs are not substantial for the parents. Economically, PONY Baseball and Softball are wellpositioned as a grassroots organization where the financial cost for families in local communities is not high.

Lara: We believe the recreational youth soccer model will become more of a choice due to cost, locality, perspective and common sense. The elite, high-priced, win-at-all-costs groups will be thinned.

Ultimately, we see this as a benefit to AYSO and our AYSO United programs and our future success as our first priority is creating a tangible playing experience, appropriate for all developmental ages and stages that allows players and their families to choose the best option for them.

By Tom Van Jacobs NSGA Marketing Coordinator The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) released a guidance for opening up high school athletics and activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this guidance, NFHS goes through a three-phased approach for returning to activities. The SMAC of the NFHS advocates that each state high school association follow and consult with its state and local health departments for determining the appropriate dates for implementing a phased-in approach from COVID-19.

Decreasing potential exposure to respiratory droplets is the basis of the stratification of risk by sport in this document.

Some of the key points in the NFHS guidance: • Plastic shields covering the entire face (or attached to a helmet) are not allowed during contests.

• Cloth face coverings are recommended to be worn by students

• A sample monitoring form for checking symptoms before practices and competitions is available in the document.

• Emphasis on the importance of keeping on athletic trainers as staff and having them assist with any return to school or return to play plans.

USA Football USA Football has released a starting guide to its phased approach to aid organizations on getting back to football. It provides links and resources to stay informed on federal, state and local guidelines. The organization is continuing to update its phased plan as information is gathered through research and engagement.

Babe Ruth Baseball and Softball Babe Ruth has released suggested guidelines for a resumption of play that emphasize following local and state health official guidelines for any activity to take place. Babe Ruth recommends that only two players are in the dugout at one time and that the other players will line up along the right and left field lines while keeping six feet apart. Additional recommendations include only having one spectator per player attending the games and, if possible, continuing the league into the fall in order to complete a full season.

Who is Driving Changes in Team and Individual Sports Participation?

The latest edition of NSGA’s Sports Participation in the US report revealed much-needed increases in 2019 for both the Team and Individual sports segments, which are key areas for many sporting goods retailers, dealers, and manufacturers.

Based on NSGA’s Total Participation Points (TPP) measure, the Team sports segment increased 1.6% in 2019 compared to the prior year while the Individual sports segment increased 1.2% during the same time frame.

TPPs offer a more complete view of participation because both the number of people participating in each sport segment (reach) and the number of sports each person is participating in (depth) are taken into account.

A deeper look into the changes and drivers behind the segment increases shows that 8 of the 11 Team sports 16 | NSGA NOW ®

USA Swimming Logo Now Acceptable on High School Swimsuits The USA Swimming checkmark logo is now an acceptable suit marking in high school swimming. This was among the high school swimming and diving rules changes for the 2020–21 school year that were approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Board of Directors.

The alterations for the USA Swimming checkmark logo were made to the uniform code under Rules 3-3-3 and 3-3-4c regarding accepted and prohibited manufacturers’ logos.
