GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT THANK YOU! This publication is intended to thank the college’s many generous and dedicated supporters for all you do to ensure the robust vitality of NSCC. By highlighting the Four “A’s” of our five-year Strategic Plan – Academics, Achievement, Access and Affordability, we hope to provide an expanded view of our goals, successes, and our plans for the future.

I hope you share my pride in North Shore Community College. Massachusetts Secretary of Education James Peyser calls NSCC one of the leading community colleges in the state and praises us for being “scrappy and strategic.” That endorsement comes along with many recent national acknowledgements of the leadership and value this College brings to the North Shore, the Commonwealth, and our country.

I thank our faculty, staff, and students whose dedication, talent and perseverance is truly inspiring. And I’m grateful to our dedicated Trustees and business, legislative and community partners who work alongside us, and who sustain us with their gifts of time, talent and resources. Honors NSCC Ranked 16th in Nation for Serving Adult Learners North Shore Community College has been ranked as one of the nation’s top two-year colleges for adult learners. NSCC came in 16th out of the nation’s 1,088 community colleges participating, and 1st among Massachusetts community colleges, at serving adult learners, scoring at the highest levels for flexibility of programs, ease of transfer, and services for adult students by Washington Monthly magazine’s annual College Guide and Rankings. (2018) NSCC Honored Nationally For Advancing Opportunities For Low-Income Students North Shore Community College is one of 25 top community colleges nationally to advance opportunities for low-income students according to the U.S. Department of Education. NSCC Awarded Bronze Seal in the All IN Campus Democracy Challenge North Shore Community College received a bronze level seal in 2018 from the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge which recognizes colleges and universities committed to increasing student voting rates. The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge awards a bronze level seal to colleges and universities with student voter participation between 50-59%.

NSCC Receives Eighth National Military Friendly School Designation For the eighth consecutive year, North Shore Community College has received designation as a Military Friendly School.

The designation honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools nationally that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members and veterans as students.

NSCC’s Credit for Prior Learning Program Receives National Recognition North Shore Community College is a leader in awarding its students credit for prior learning (CPL) and as a result is poised to lead a state consortium to assist its counterparts across the Commonwealth.

NSCC heads the state community college system in CPL with 450 students served annually, compared to an average of 150 statewide, Executive Director of Alternative Studies, Dr. Cristy Sugarman, said. “For students, this program means less cost and less time needed to complete their degrees or certificates.”

NSCC received a grant in 2017 to lead the creation of a state website where potential and current students can research how their life experiences may translate into college credit which may be viewed at: MyExperienceCounts.mass.edu/home NSCC’s 40-year history and results with giving credit for prior learning were recognized nationally as one of 10 community college programs nationwide to be named a finalist for the prestigious 2018 Bellwether Award in the Instructional Programs & Service Category.

NSCC First Community College in Massachusetts to Implement Two-Year Academic Scheduling In 2017, NSCC launched the first two-year schedule for a community college in Massachusetts, which provides stronger educational planning tools for student enrollment, retention and degree completion. Being the first gives North Shore a competitive advantage for students who are looking for this type of educational planning tool.

With 77% of our students working and 58% of our students caring for dependents, the two-year schedule helps students to see a clear, defined pathway to their academic finish line.

Students are able to view a full year’s academic schedule with detailed information including class sections, time of day, day of the week, room and modality instead of only the current academic semester. In addition, a two-year-out schedule is also available for student viewing.

52nd Commencement Held May 24 North Shore Community College’s 52nd Commencement featured Al Wilson, creator of the fabulously successful Beyond Walls cultural initiative in Lynn, as Commencement Keynote Speaker. Francisco “Dany” Acosta was the Commencement Student Speaker. Acosta, who is legally blind, graduated with a GPA of 3.9 in Liberal Arts, having overcome an extremely challenging past to become the success he is today. Emmanuella Ofurie was the Commencement Soloist and performed the National Anthem a capella.

For Cleiton Weimann and his fatherin-law, Arcadio E. Cruz, North Shore Community College is a family affair.

Cleiton graduated from the health science program and will transfer to Salem State University, while Arcadio graduated from the English as a Second Language Program and will continue his studies to be a surgical technologist. In addition, Cleiton’s wife, mother-in-law and sister-in-law attended NSCC – they call it “Our Family College!”

After my graduation from Salem High School, I attended NSCC, not just because it is convenient and less expensive, but because of the support network provided here to help me and because the community seemed relatable.

Leadership comes naturally to Nirwendjie Altidor, president of the NSCC Student Government Association. The health science major is well-known around campus as she is also President of the Pre-Med Club, Vice President of the STEM Club, and a member of the MultiCultural Society and is a math and chemistry peer tutor. The Honors Program and 4.0 GPA student also belongs to two Honor Societies- Phi Theta Kappa and Sigma Alpha Pi. She is also the recipient of the 2018 Lisa Milso Award for Distinguished Service, which honors an “up and coming” student leader who demonstrates an outstanding spirit of service, along with

NSCC Student Leader Selected as 2018 Newman Civic Fellow Fatima Jallow Nambouh is North Shore Community College’s 2018 Newman Civic Fellow. Nambouh, a Gambian native who maintained a 4.0 GPA, made the Dean’s List, served as the college’s student representative on its Board of Trustees as well as vice president of NSCC’s MultiCultural Society, and tutored her peers, all while maintaining a full-time job and raising her young son. She graduated in May 2018 with a liberal arts degree and will study international relations at Boston College.

I was born in a third-world country where health sciences are not very developed and appropriate/affordable health care is not accessible to the majority of the population, which led to my interest in public health and the desire to contribute to advancements in science and medicine.“

NSCC’s Economics and Finance Club Students Place First in Fed Challenge Competition North Shore Community College’s team of Economics and Finance Club students, under the leadership of Economics Professor Moonsu Han, took first place in the 2017 Boston Regional Community College Fed Challenge Competition held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. The competition encourages the development of important skills such as research and analysis, decision-making, argument formulation, and effective communication.

NSCC Alumni Association’s 2018 Distinguished Alumnus Award State Representative and Navy Veteran Jerry Parisella of Beverly, NSCC Class of 1984, received the NSCC Alumni Association’s 2018 Distinguished Alumnus Award, which is presented annually to an NSCC graduate whose professional and personal achievements bring honor to themselves and the College. Candidates are chosen on the basis of integrity, character, professional accomplishments, and college or community service.

Early College for High School Students on the Rise at NSCC North Shore Community College’s Early College program makes it possible for high school students, age 15+, to take up to 30 college credits while still in high school, with classes taught on NSCC’s campuses by NSCC faculty, graduate with both a high school diploma and a year of college, enjoy huge cost savings and get a great jump on college completion and career training! It is a win-win for students, local school districts, the greater community, and future employers. Early College contributes to NSCC’s focus on increasing access to and success in higher education, with specific attention to students who are lower-income and/or from underserved communities.

In one short year at the college, Ryan, while achieving academically as a TRIO student, found time to serve as a Presidential Scholar, Student Government Association Vice President of Culture and Inclusion, and is a member of the Events Council, the Environmental Club, Health and Wellness Club, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the Honors Program. He also received the Thomas Bourke Helping Hands Award, which honors students who generously and unconditionally give time to support and enhance the College community. His SGA advisor notes, “Ryan has done an exponential amount of work to enhance student life at the college in one year. He brings a contagious positivity and energy to each project he works on.”

Mobile Markets Brought to Campus to Address Student Hunger North Shore Community College, in partnership with the Greater Boston Food Bank, Beverly Bootstraps, and The Open Door offer a free monthly college Mobile Market open to NSCC students, faculty, and staff. The NSCC Mobile Market provides up to 25 pounds per person, per visit of fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables to the North Shore campus community. In its first year of operation, 58,474 pounds of food were distributed, along with 100 emergency food bags to nearly 3,000 students, faculty/staff and community members.

Men as Leaders Empowered to Strive (MALES) Program

A new initiative underway in 2018, Men as Leaders Empowered to Strive (MALES) has launched to support the 100 Males to College strategic state initiative. According to NSCC Vice President of Student Affairs Jermaine Williams, the goal of the MALES program is to “increase college access, enrollment, retention and success for low-income males and males of color, particularly young, low-income Latino and African American men residing in Lynn, MA 01902, so that their prospects for success in college and career are more attainable.”

Eligibility for the MALES program includes: first-generation college student and/or from a low-income family; a recent graduate high school or have a HiSet/GED; and acceptance at NSCC for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Chelsea Amadi Makes the Affordable Choice at NSCC Chelsea Amadi exhibits intelligence beyond her young years. She made a great financial choice for herself and her family when she enrolled in the Commonwealth Commitment Program, the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education’s innovative college affordability and completion plan.

The plan commits Massachusetts public colleges and universities to providing a series of financial incentives to students who begin their studies at one of 15 community colleges, earn an associate degree within two and a half years, and then transfer to a state university or University of Massachusetts campus to earn a baccalaureate degree.

In addition, Chelsea is the recipient of Liberty Mutual Insurance’s 2017-2018 LEADA@Liberty Scholarship, which grants each recipient $2,500 per year for each of the four years of their college career. The scholarship, which Liberty Mutual launched last year, will be awarded annually to four students of African descent who are enrolled in the Massachusetts Commonwealth Commitment program.

Chelsea is a liberal arts biology major who is also a student advisor for NSCC’s STEM and TRIO Student Support programs. She has made the Dean’s List every semester, belongs to the National Society for Leadership Development and is a member and secretary of NSCC’s Honor Society and Multicultural Clubs.

NSCC Foundation Awards $400,000 in Student Scholarships The North Shore Community College (NSCC) Foundation has awarded more than $400,000 in scholarship awards in the last two years to over 400 incoming and current NSCC students who excel in the classroom and in service to the college and community. Scholarships are also awarded by the NSCC Alumni Association to graduating NSCC students and alumni who are continuing their education at four-year institutions. Most awards are announced at a special reception held annually in early May, attended by student recipients and the donors whose generosity made the scholarships possible. Over 50% of students attending NSCC receive some sort of financial assistance.

Since 1985, the NSCC Foundation has presented scholarships to NSCC students to help pay for increasing educational expenses. In total, nearly 4,000 students have been awarded over $3.4 million in scholarships.

Scholarship donors and recipients enjoy meeting and learning about each other at the annual scholarship reception.

NSCC Offers “Free College” North Shore Promise Award Program North Shore Community College is the first community college in the Northeast to offer a self-funded “free college” pilot program for 100 eligible incoming students. The “North Shore Promise Award” strives to attract students who are being priced out of higher education as they do not qualify for full federal and state grant aid, are unable to afford the gap between financial aid and the cost of attendance, or are too risk-averse to utilize student loans.

“NSCC is committed to making college affordable for even more students to achieve the life-long dream of a college degree with less student debt,” said NSCC President Patricia A. Gentile. “The North Shore Promise Award reduces the direct cost to attend NSCC to zero for new full-time students who are eligible for financial aid but lack enough grant funds to cover tuition and fees.”

Massachusetts’ Commonwealth Commitment Makes College Affordable North Shore Community College has taken the lead in the state in getting its students enrolled in The Commonwealth Commitment, an innovative college affordability and completion plan to help more students achieve the dream of a college degree. The program is the first agreement of its kind in the nation. Over 100 NSCC students have taken advantage of the program to date, with more enrolling for fall 2018. The plan commits every public campus to providing 10% rebates at the end of each successfully completed semester to qualifying undergraduate students. Eligible students should be able to realize an average savings of $5,090 off the cost of obtaining a baccalaureate degree. Students begin their studies at one of the state’s 15 community colleges, must attend full-time and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0. After earning an associate degree in two and a half years or less, students will transfer to a state university or UMass campus to earn a baccalaureate degree.

NSCC’s Lynn Campus Expansion North Shore Community College’s 37,000- square-foot expansion of NSCC’s Thomas W. McGee Building has transformed the Lynn Campus. The new extension provides 10 smart classrooms, a centralized Student Success Center, a testing center, Academic Technology space, a Center for Teaching, Learning and Innovation, offices and a board/ community meeting room, and lots of informal congregation space for students.

The extension also features a beautiful new entry plaza and façade to better connect the college with downtown Lynn.

This expansion gives NSCC the opportunity to better serve our students, and to connect with our neighborhood, our city and region, and our corporate and municipal partners even more effectively.

NSCC’s Lynn campus opened in 1985, designed to serve 1,000 students, and was immediately full to capacity.

Currently, approximately 49 percent of NSCC’s nearly 8,000 credit students attend classes primarily on the Lynn campus.

The College was fortunate to have many community leaders on hand for the grand opening of its new Lynn Campus Extension.

Greenhouse Opens on Lynn Campus A 1,200–square-foot greenhouse opened on North Shore Community College’s Lynn Campus to support the college’s Agriculture and Food Services career pathways including horticulture, culinary arts and medicine, STEM labs, early childhood education and floriculture curriculum. The fully equipped greenhouse, which will begin holding classes in spring 2019, has irrigation, lighting and heating systems, aquaponics, rain catchment, composting, sorting tables and lab test kits. Health and Science students will conduct lab experiments and view real time applications of sustainable ecosystems. Culinary arts students will grow and experiment with specialty vegetable and herbs for serving in their Café, while small business entrepreneur students will experience the process of bringing a product to “market.”

The College is partnering with The Food Project, which will share greenhouse space and assist in daily operations. Food Project Seed Crew & Dirt Crew members will interact with NSCC students in project planning and implementation of new garden spaces, educational displays and assist with Salad Days in the Lynn elementary schools. The project will also be part of a larger movement known as Lynn Grows.

Campus Bookstore for Students and the Community The City of Lynn’s first and only bookstore opened at North Shore Community College’s Lynn campus in fall 2018. The new venue represents a partnership between Follett and NSCC. “The College is excited about this new partnership which will provide expanded and refreshed products to our students and faculty members,” said NSCC President Patricia A. Gentile. “We were the last community college in Massachusetts to run our own bookstore and it was time to move in a new direction. We look forward to what Follett will be able to additionally offer our community as well as the downtown Lynn residents.”

The renovated Lynn Campus bookstore, now run by Follett, will offer residents of the city of Lynn their first bookstore. The community is welcome to use the facility.

New Student Veterans Center Opens at NSCC’s Lynn Campus Student veterans on the Lynn campus of North Shore Community College now have access to a new Student Veterans Lounge modeled after the successful addition of a Veterans Center at the Danvers Campus in 2013.

The Veterans Center was made possible by the family of a Vietnam veteran who went back to school and understands the importance of a gathering place for returning veterans assimilating to a civilian environment.

NSCC’s over 250 student veterans and active military members can now utilize dedicated space to study, receive assistance in applying for veteran’s benefits, and obtain VA support services right on campus. Perhaps most importantly, they have a welcoming place to connect, identify and share experiences with other student veterans and experienced staff.

C HAMPIONS FOR HIGHER EDUCATION Champions For North Shore Community College In 2017, the North Shore Community College Foundation established the NSCC Champions Award, celebrating exceptional leaders dedicated to excellence in higher education and career pathways for North Shore residents. This prestigious award will be presented annually at the Champions for North Shore Community College Recognition Breakfast. Inaugural Champions For North Shore Community College Recognition Breakfast Senator Thomas M. McGee, R.T. Paine and Barbara Metcalf, and Eastern Bank were honored at the inaugural Champions for North Shore Community College Recognition Breakfast October 3, 2017, for decades of exceptional leadership on the North Shore and their impact on higher education.

The Metcalfs of Beverly Farms were honored in recognition of philanthropy and volunteerism to the college; State Senator Thomas M. McGee for his public service and advocacy; and Eastern Bank in recognition of community impact.

Sheldon and Frances Brown In 1996, Dr. Sheldon Brown (now NSCC Professor Emeritus) founded the Forums on Tolerance at NSCC to foster learning more about one another, encouraging empathy and understanding, and to make a difference in ourselves, our communities and our world. Twenty-two years and 40 Forums later, Sheldon and his wife, Frances, have ensured that the vital mission of the Forums will continue in perpetuity by establishing The Forums on Tolerance Endowed Fund with a $15,000 contribution to the NSCC Foundation. This Fund is in memory of their parents, Elizabeth and Harry Brown, and Sylvia and David Novetsky, brother Avi Novetsky, and also of Sheldon’s relatives, the Szwejd and Siderman families, who were murdered in the Holocaust in Nesvizh, Belarus in 1941. The Fund will be utilized for Honoraria for Forum speakers. The Forums are held twice a year and are open to the greater community.

The Women’s Fund of Essex County In 2016, the Women’s Fund of Essex County approached NSCC with a question. What do single mothers on the North Shore need in order stay in school and graduate?

A survey of NSCC single parent students revealed that the primary need is flexible financial assistance. Partnering with NSCC leadership to develop a program with eligibility and evaluation criteria, The Women’s Fund of Essex County committed $75,000 over three years to pilot the Support for Single Mothers Fund at NSCC. “Our goal was to have a two-generation impact, and the results of this partnership are far exceeding our expectations. We are truly changing the future for single mothers and their families,” says Ro French, President of The Women’s Fund of Essex County.

Bob and Mary Murphy Bob ‘99, a systems analyst at NSCC, and his wife Mary, daughter of the late NSCC Professor Peter Foss, are longtime supporters of the NSCC Scholarship Program. In 2017, they redirected the Bob and Mary Murphy Scholarship to support an incoming NSCC college student who completed NSCC’s Adult Learning Center program, which offers free basic literacy and High School Equivalency Test prep courses to help adults pursue further education and job training. “We wanted to help someone take that next step forward and go to college,” says Bob. “Education changed the course of my life, and we are honored to make that opportunity possible

From new scholarships to targeted grants and a $25,000 gift to North Shore Advancing, the NSCC Alumni Association has truly elevated the entire college community! Thanks to the Association, students at the Lynn Campus now have a beautiful, welcoming Student Lounge in which to study, gather, and engage. Recipients of the Association’s new Beacon Scholarship will each receive $1,000 annually for up to three years to help cover the gap between their financial aid and NSCC tuition and fees. Students from NSCC’s Center for Alternative Students program traveled to Eastern Europe to study the Holocaust with the help of a $5,000 grant from the Association. The link between NSCC alumni and students makes our college community stronger, and the NSCC Alumni Association is truly a cornerstone of our success.

The William L. Saltonstall Foundation The NSCC Lynn Campus has a new Testing Center thanks to a $50,000 grant award from The William L. Saltonstall Foundation. The new space accommodates nearly double the number of students and features four testing rooms with faster, more reliable computer and software access and increased flexibility for test offerings. Every NSCC student utilizes the Testing Center, and more than half of the 17,000 tests administered annually take place at the Lynn Campus. The high-stake tests are used to determine course placement, credit for prior learning, certification and credential earning, and course grades. This new Testing Center is essential to student success and the overall college experience at NSCC.

Diane Stern presents the Henderson Arthur Stern Memorial Scholarship to NSCC student Maria Rosario.

Diane Stern For Diane, establishing a college scholarship for a Lynn English High School (LEHS) graduate was the perfect tribute to her father’s legacy. Born and raised in Lynn, Henderson Arthur Stern was an LEHS alumnus and owner of Stern’s Jewelers in downtown Lynn. While exploring local options, Diane’s husband, Neil Ungerleider, discovered the NSCC Foundation Scholarship Program.

“The scholarship process was so easy, and the gratification from this experience is truly over the top. Meeting the students you are helping is such a rewarding experience.”

The Henderson Arthur Stern Memorial Scholarship is designated for an incoming NSCC student who is an LEHS graduate, an immigrant or first generation U.S. citizen, and an Early College program participant. Diane and Neil have pledged $5,000 to this scholarship, with $1,000 awarded to a new student annually.

North Shore Community College (NSCC) is one of 15 Massachusetts community colleges. The College serves 26 cities and towns along the coastal region from north metropolitan Boston to Cape Ann. Since its founding in 1965, NSCC has grown from a single building to four campuses, and from five to 80 academic programs of study. The College has an urban campus in downtown Lynn, a suburban campus in Danvers, a workforce training and community education center in Danvers and a cosmetology and culinary center in Middleton.

NSCC educates approximately 13,000 credit and non-credit students annually and nearly 40,000 students have graduated from the College. NSCC is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc., through its Commission on Institutions of Higher Education.

Since 1965, over a quarter million North Shore residents have taken courses at NSCC. Eighty-four percent of NSCC career and technical program students are employed within three months of graduation, and 92% of NSCC graduates live and work on the North Shore.
