• A Monthly Publication For The Students of North Shore Community College, Danvers, Lynn & Beverly, Massachusetts •

Are you on Facebook? Do you Tweet? Have you signed up for LinkedIn? North Shore Community College hopes so, and is eager to learn your social utilization habits. media Students should be on the lookout for an email survey in the next few weeks which will inquire about their communication habits and preferences.

Input received will be used to enhance the college’s social media strategy to improve connectivity and communication between the college and its key audiences. The college has been active in this arena for about a year. The NSCC Social Media Group (SMG) formed in 2010 and was instrumental in moving the college into social media use. The group continues to meet regularly to monitor, CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

event will be held in the Student Lounge. Students in Professor Moonsu Han’s economics classes will give a Powerpoint presentation on the history of the 1860 Shoemakers Strike, exploring its impact on the labor movement. They will then examine the modern implications, and discuss the pros and cons of labor unions. Members of the audience will then have an opportunity to ask questions. In the Lynn cafeteria, students of Larry Davis' class will conduct a similar program. All NSCC students, faculty and staff, as well as community members are invited to participate in the symbolic reenactment of the historic day, March 7, 1860, when hundreds of women shoe workers joined

BY CHRIS RICCI In 2007, English altrock band Radiohead surprised the music industry with the unique way they presented their seventh album, In Rainbows. They decided to release said album on their website as a digital download and gave the listener the option to pay whatever they wanted for the album. Despite the fear that too many people would “buy” the album for a penny or less, the average price people payed for the album was around six dollars. Since the unorthodox release of In Rainbows’, many critics and fans have been wondering how the band was going to top this style of release. On Valentine’s Day, Radiohead decided to answer that question; they announced that the physical release will come out in March, the special edition in May, and the digital download in four days. The sheer surprise

that their album would literally come out in less than a week (at a very set price, mind you: nine dollars for an MP3 download and 14 for a high-quality WAV format) caused the order website to crash numerous times as well as various fan sites. Clocking in at just less than forty minutes and containing eight tracks, The King of Limbs is the shortest full-length album Radiohead has ever released. The denseness of the

album, however, makes it seem a whole lot longer. The album’s opening track, “Bloom,” has the odd atmospheric feel of albums past. However, this is quickly replaced with this odd and, at times, jazzy ambient feel. All the instruments begin at once and, initially, sound chaotic. However, once Thom Yorke’s voice fades in, The track seems to tie itself together.

back to the person. People wondered how Edison was able to teach a machine to speak Latin. A person would speak Chinese into the machine and it would speak Chinese back to them. Again, people would wonder how the “Wizard of Menlo

one had ever heard a recording of his or her own voice. Arthur C. Clarke once said, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Can you imagine seeing a technology and completely misunderstanding what

Park” taught the machine to speak Chinese. People simply did not understand the concept of a recording. And back then; no

it was doing and how it might work? For most people, that’s what happened on February 16,

In 1877 Thomas Edison invented the phonograph. Ever the showman, Edison liked to demonstrate his device by allowing people to speak into the machine and then playing the recording back for them. However, back in the late 1800’s, the technology was outside almost everyone’s conceptual understanding. Up to that point in history, the only thing that could mimic the sound of one’s voice was a ventriloquist, so people thought it had to be a trick. Clergymen came to pronounce it “the devil’s work” and to discredit Edison. But here’s the really fun part. Edison used to charge people 25 cents to try to “fool the machine.” A person who spoke Latin (a dead language) would speak Latin into it and, of course, it would speak Latin

Women’s History Month: Women of NSCC

BY DAVID RIVERA

To recognize Women’s History Month this year, we will introduce some of our women faculty here at NSCC. Kathy Hirbour is Coordinator of paralegal programs, and has taught for six years. Some of her most exciting moments come from attending graduation ceremonies, because, she says, “I love to see students achieve this milestone.” Kathy went on to say that she loved being able to partake in a trip to New Orleans on two seperate occasions. These are just a couple of the reasons why she loves working at NSCC. Next on the list is Diana Davis. She has been teaching at North Shore for

BY NELSON BAKER

about a year now, and she really enjoys it. Diana teaches Biology in Natural Sciences. She chose NSCC because of its good reputation. Outside of NSCC, Diana spends time working on renovations to her home. During the summer, she is involved with environmental charitable work by helping injured sea turtles. Her favorite quote: “There is nothing radical about clean air and water.” Her reason for this is, she stated, “people forget about air/water pollution until it becomes political.” Finally, we come to Kathy Yanchus, Chairperson of the Communications/Skills Department. She taught fulltime for ten years before becoming an adjunct for six years. Kathy chose NSCC for

its “mission to give hope to all students.” “It is a great place to work, and a great place to succeed,” she added. Her most memorable moments here at the college come from “seeing students come back to school after ahving a hard time in high school, and seeing them succeed.” Kathy is a former coordinator of Sunday School. She received an award in fundraising when she took the time to deliver soup and money to an injured man when he was in need. Kathy loves teaching here at NSCC and is grateful for being contacted by an adjunt, which led to her discovery of NSCC and all it has to offer.

“Egypt is the biggest and most powerful state,” wrote Roger Hardy of BBC News. Mubarak was president for thirty years, and his descent is significant. “The fall of Mubarak will affect a host of regional issues – the Arab-Israeli peace process, the growing influence of Iran, the battle against Muslim extremism – in ways that are hard, if not impossible, to predict.” When 60 Minutes journalist Lara Logan was physically and sexually assaulted on Februrary 11 in Cairo by a group of twenty egyptians, it set off even more alarm. During her

ordeal, the egyptian protesters were apparently shouting and labeling her a spy, and “Jew,” even though she is not of jewish descent. CBS reported that Logan has been to many dangerous places in her career. I’m sure none were compared to the events that she has experienced in Egypt. Many hopes for a fast recovery. Journalists are being attacked more regularly now; they are not as safe as they used to be. Is this a growing trend, or just a time that Egypt needs to clarify with renewed leadership

Chaos in Egypt

Amidst the turmoil that is centered in Egypt, President Mohammed Hosni Mubarak has stepped down, passing his powers to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. The Egyptian military are now in charge. Not only did he hand over his power, he gave to them a host of complex problems, unfinished business, and ultimately, the reason for his collapse – the frustration and the aggressiveness of the Egyptian people. For a military that hasn’t seen any action in many years, they have a lot on their plate.

RIOTERS IN EGYPT PRIOR TO MUBARAK’S LEAVE

The Definition of a Man

BY NELSON BAKER Women are attracted to different qualities in a guy, but the quality that seems to be most popular is confidence, and the ability to take control of a situation. I agree that guys need to have this, as confidence can shine through in every action. I think this is misconstrued to the point where many feel the need to put on a front and act overly aggressive or obnoxiously loud and demeaning basically all the time. Though there are some women that, for some reason, like these qualities, most women would rather get involved with someone that can set aside that aggression, sit down beside them, and look them in the eyes once in a while; truly understanding each other can bring so much more meaning to a relationship. There have been so many times that I have heard guys mention their wives as the nag, the old lady, the wife, and then proceed to tell a story about why we should feel sorry that they are stuck with this person. Ok, maybe there is some kind of male bonding going on there, but I have to say, not once

have I ever heard any of these stories involve something positive, or a situation where they were proud to be with this woman, except from friends I know well. Not one time – which leads me to believe that they mean what they say. When I hear these stories, honestly, I feel that they are making fools of themselves. There are things that have to be laughed at, but when it is normal for a guy to talk negatively about his woman, and it is a joke when he cannot, something is seriously wrong. Why can’t a guy admit when he is happy, or when a woman is doing right by him? Does this make him soft, or is this the way it should be? Doesn’t it say something about a guy who has nothing good to say about his girl? It says that he is not happy, and is not making any moves to change this. For whatever reason, he is miserable, and the only way to deal with it is to laugh at his own ridiculous situation. A guy can be courageous, brave, and tough, and have a heart at the same time. After all, we are human too.

ranks with thousands of their male counterparts in a huge march through the streets of Lynn demanding higher wages. It was one of the nation’s earliest large scale labor actions taken by women and drew national attention. The “Great Shoemakers’ Strike of 1860” marked a significant moment in American labor relations, and with the participation of women, even drew the attention and support of Presidential candidate, Abraham Lincoln. To commemorate this important event and celebrate it as a part of Women’s History Month, a re-enactment of the women’s protest march will be held on Monday, March 7, beginning at 11:30 am in NSCC’s Lynn Campus gymnasium.

City Hall, with comments by Lynn’s first woman mayor, Judith Flanagan Kennedy. Powerful Women in Business panel discussion will be held on Wednesday, March 16, 10:30 – 11:15 a.m, featuring Magnolia Contreras, MSW, MBA, of Contreras Consulting Services, Mary Sarris, Executive Director, North Shore Workforce Investment Board and Lucy Dearborn, President, Lucia Lighting & Design, Inc. Girls Inc. is hosting an open house on Thursday March 24 from 3-6 at its new headquarters on 50 High Street in Lynn. The event will feature young women portraying women from history in various rooms throughout the house. Throughout the month an ongoing exhibit on the Shoemakers’ Strike, will be available in the NSCC Lynn Library, courtesy of The Lynn Museum. The month’s activities will conclude on March 29 when the local AFL CIO will sponsor a panel discussion on Union Women Today: Power on the Job from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the college’s gym in Lynn. All events are free. The public is encouraged to attend and participate. For additional details or questions contact Lisa Milso at 781-593-5490 or lmilso@northshore.edu.

Hispanic Language Barrier in Eye Care

BY ELIZABETH ANCRUM

No one truly realizes how severe a situation is until they are placed into it. I never acknowledged the need for Spanish speaking professionals in healthcare until I took a trip to the optometrist with my father-in-law. My father-in-law, or should I say “mi suegro,” is an older puertorican male who struggles with English. The whole visit was very frustrating and in the end mi suegro didn’t leave satisfied. The secretary at

the front desk was bi-lingual but she couldn’t enter the exam room with us and once the door closed neither us nor the doctor looked as if he knew what was going on. When I called to book the appointment, I was told by the secretary, “In this office we speak Spanish and English.” However I think she meant to say, “I speak Spanish and English fluently, yet the doctor tries to memorize phrases he is unsure of himself!” While I was in the exam room, the doctor kept asking me to tell my father-

in-law to do things that I could barely say in Spanish myself. When I walked out the door of the optometrist’s office, I pledged that I would educate myself to speak Spanish fluently, so when I enter a health care profession I will be able to establish a relationship with my patients and make sure their needs are met. The experience I had at the optometrist with my fatherin-law is one of the many events that occur daily in the health care field. Hispanics are a dominant population in the United States and in 22 states they are the dominating group of minorities. It is stated in the article, “Open Your Doors to Hispanic Patients,” by Ronald Hirn, that almost 44.3 million people of Hispanic origin live in the United States and as of July 1, 2005, almost one of every two people added to the population since has been of Hispanic origin. Then why in the year of 2010 is a language barrier in health care still present? It is astonishing that health care professions have done little to accommodate people who cannot speak English. Patients desire a doctor or

optometrist who can understand their problem and communicate efficiently with them to fix it and if you can meet their needs, your business will benefit on your behalf. As Hirn says in the article, “Well, if you can't learn a language in an hour and phrases aren't enough, can you still serve your Spanish-speaking patients? ¡Absolutamente! With a little effort, some patience and a lot of respect, you can create an office that meets the needs of this patient population, and also build your practice.” It is also found that many patients who cannot communicate in English lack to visit the doctor regularly because they feel they will not be understood by their health care physician, in order to correct the problem in the first place. Studies prove that children in homes where English is a second language and barely spoken have a number of health care issues that are left unaddressed, opposed to children whose families communicate in English fluently. As Hirn says, “Additionally, language can often be a barrier to health care access. One study found that

children in homes where English is not the primary language had more health problems and less access to health insurance. Census bureau numbers indicate that 78% of Hispanics report speaking a language other than English at home, though only half of this group reports speaking English very well.” This problem is a major concern in the health of the American population and it only takes a little effort to correct. Health care professions could start by taking a Spanish class or if they do not have the time to dedicate, they can teach themselves by hiring a bilingual secretary and asking her to practice with them, and make materials available to patients in both languages and make an effort to post signs and messages around the office in both languages. Once health care professions learn simple phrases such as ,”siga mi dedo,” and begin to establish a Spanish base clientele, the desire to learn more will burn within. These are just a few steps to correcting a major problem, yet with time and effort, all is possible.

nude women in erotic fashion. He erases facial features such as a nose, eyes, and ears. The sexual parts are highlighted with

pale skin and the rest of the women's bodies are tanned. Jan van der Marck remarks, “Wesselmann shows woman as the consumer, both consuming and being consumed.” Seductive Subversion are women that viewed this art world at the time as outsiders and observed the male artists gloating on patriarchy. So, in turn, their art collectively speaks loudly to undo the stereotypes of women and to match the skill level and intellectual value as the men artists. The top floor of the Tufts Art Gallery is shaped like an “L” divided into three rooms. The first room is the entrance through double glass doors to a seating area placed in front of a television running an informational dvd concerning Pop Art. Hanging on a brick wall is the first piece of artwork by Martha Rosler with a piece titled “Hot House Harem.” Rosler created this piece as a photomontage. She collected cutouts of nude

women from pornographic magazines and colleges them onto a surface. All the nude women overwhelm the surface and there is no escape to their eyes staring at the viewer. Sexualized bodies disappear due to the intimidation the gazes offer. This piece comments toward women only seen for sexual purposes. The gallery pamphlet on this show wants the viewer to keep in mind this quote from John Berger in Ways of Seeing, “Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at.” An example of a successful woman artist of the Pop Art realm is Marjorie Strider with her work Triptych II (Beach Girl) made in 1963. She took an innovative approach to her painting surface. A sculptural element of carved wood for the breasts pop out three dimensionally from the wood board it's mounted on. This piece focuses on how women are portrayed as sexual objects and attention is paid heavily on the

Seductive Subversion- Women Pop Artists

BY AMANDA WORONECKI & CHRIS RICCI Tufts University Art Gallery is hosting the “Seductive Subversion Women Pop Artists 1958-1968” show that runs through January 27th to April 3, 2011. The gallery offers a wide variety of women artists of the Pop Art movement including Los Angels based artist Marisol to New York's finest Yayoi Kusama. These powerful women artists among many others paved the ground to a true feminist movement that strived for equality in the art world. Before the feminists took a stand, the art world was male dominated. Andy Warhol was a driving force to the mens stronghold that locked women out completely. Gallery owners deemed women's artwork unworthy for pristine gallery walls. Men used women as sexual objects as subjects to art-

work. The pieces are highly misogynistic and exploitive. For example, Tom Wesselmann, dedicated himself to painting

When Birth Control Fails, Do You Have a Back Up Plan?

BY SARAH KENNEDY MCPHEE, MPH, HEALTH QUARTERS

March 30th marks the 10th anniversary of the Back Up Your Birth Control campaign, a national campaign to expand access to emergency contracep-

method in these and other situations, when your original plan for contraception falls through. It’s hard to predict when the need for EC may arise, so it’s smart to have it on hand, just in case.

Plan B prevents pregnancy. If taken when a woman is already pregnant, Plan B will not harm the pregnancy. Often, these two medications are confused when in reality they are completely different.

• Women and men 17 and older can buy Plan B over-the-counter from a pharmacist for $40-$50, or from Health Quarters for $25 (with proof of age), a much more affordable option for most people.

• Women under 17 need a prescription to get Plan B from a pharmacist. At Health Quarters, they may receive Plan B on-site after a clinical assessment and are written a prescription.

• Some pharmacists have been specially trained in the Massachusetts EC Pharmacy Access Program. These pharmacists are able to distribute Plan B without a prescription to women of any age. Go to www.massECnetwork.org for a list of participating pharmacies and pharmacists.

tion (EC) by increasing public education and awareness.

EC, a.k.a. the Morning-After-Pill and Plan B, is something every sexually active woman and man should have in their medicine cabinets. EC is emergency birth control that can be taken to prevent pregnancy after sex: - when a condom breaks - when birth control is not taken correctly - when no birth control is used - when sexual assault occurs It acts as a back-up

Here are the important facts about EC or Plan B OneStep, the brand name: • Plan B is 89% effective when taken within 72 hours of intercourse. The sooner it’s taken, the more effective it is, but it can be effective up to 5 days/120 hours after sex. Take Plan B as soon as you can, but if you can’t take it right away, it could be effective up to 5 days later.

• Plan B is not the same as Mifeprex, also known as the “abortion pill.” Mifeprex terminates an early pregnancy, while

• EC is not a substitute for other contraceptives. It is not as effective as regular birth control and provides no protection from HIV/AIDS and STDs.

Having a pack of EC on hand gives you the option of protecting yourself from the risk of pregnancy, when you may need it most. Come into HQ this month for your “just in case” pack of EC or call 978.922.4490. For more information on the Back Up Your Birth Control Campaign, http://backupyourbirthcontrol.tu mblr.com/info.

brainstorm and advise on the college’s use of social media. The group is representative of many areas of the college that have responsibility for communicating with various audiences and an interest in social media. In the past year, the SMG helped achieve the following accomplishments: creation and maintenance of an official NSCC Facebook page and Twitter account; drafting of social media guidelines; and creation and maintenance of departmental individual Facebook pages. In July 2010 the institution acknowledged the future and importance of new media by incorporating responsibility for it into the position of the Director of Public Relations and New Media. Linda Brantley was subsequently hired into this role and now leads social media efforts for the college. “It’s a very exciting, transitional time for the college on the social media front. Technology is changing, at lightning speed, the way we communicate and choose to receive relevant information. The college needs to keep up with the curve. National trends tell us that immediacy and familiarity are key for our students, so to that end the college needs to be interacting with our students on social media platforms, as well as ensuring that it is delivering key information through preferred channels,” Brantley said. For instance, given the fact that so many people now get the majority of their information via smart phones, work is underway to develop a mobile application for the college’s web site. Sandy Fuhs is working to create a social media credit program. Members of the SMG include:

PR & New Media: Linda Brantley, Nancy Barker; Marketing: Tracy Callahan, Erin Ford, Sam McGilloway; IS: Chris Dufort; Student Life: Victoria Pasciuto; Alumni: Sandy Rochon; Noncredit and Corporate Ed: Tommy Watson; Instructional Technology: Andrea Milligan; Veterans: Michael Smith; TRIO: Donna Davis; Financial Aide:Dug Laurent; Tech Prep: Yandi Figueroa Slack and Graphic Design: Sandy Fuhs. In addition to the college’s main Facebook page, other pages include: Alumni, Culinary Arts, Financial Aide, Kids to College, Library, Presidential Scholars, Tech Prep, TRIO, and Veterans. Brantley encourages students to respond to the upcoming survey (a very nice prize will be awarded to a lucky winner!). “We need to meet people where they are and social media gives us one more tool in our communication toolbox. It augments all the other more traditional avenues we use – such as college email - and will never replace them. The more ways we can distribute information and keep the channels of communication open the more sure we can be that our messages are being received and acted upon.”

North Shore Community College and the Day of Silence 2011

BY STEPHANIE ROBINSON

The Day of Silence is most commonly known as a student-led national event that draws attention to anti-Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) verbal and physical bullying and harassment across our nation’s school systems. Students from junior high schools to college take different forms of silence on this particular day in an effort to encourage schools and classmates to

address the problem of antiLGBT behavior. The event is designed to help illustrate the silencing effect of this terrible bullying and harassment on LGBT students and those bullies may perceived to be LGBT. The Day of Silence is a necessary event at North Shore Community College and all other schools because two of the top three reasons students say their peers were most often bullied at school were actual or perceived sexual orientation and

gender expression, according to “From Teasing to Torment: School Climate in America,” which was a 2005 report by GLSEN (The Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network) and Harris Interactive. Also, GLSEN’s 2007 National School Climate Survey found that nearly 9 out of 10 LGBT students report verbal, sexual or physical harassment at school and more than 30% report missing at least a day of school in the past month out of

Watson Continued from page 1

2011. That’s the evening that a very sophisticated IBM computer named “Watson” beat two human opponents in a friendly game of Jeopardy. The match was broadcast over two days, giving the blogosphere, the tweetisphere and Facebookistan time to light up with pro-Watson and antiWatson sentiment. In almost every case, the arguments went something like this:

Moron 1: “Machines will never be better than people!” Moron 2: “Yes they will!” Or,

Metaphysicist: “Machines will never fall in love.” Physicist: “Neither will I. So what?” Or,

Jeopardy for crafting a fantastic and wonderfully entertaining demonstration. This technology could have been displayed in an infinite number of less interesting ways. This remarkable mixture of showmanship and science was reminiscent of the great science exhibitions of the 19th century. If you’re a student of innovation, or just want to learn about how important showmanship was to Industrial Age innovators, do a little research about the World’s Columbian Exposition aka The Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla duked it out for the right (and the contract) to light up the fairgrounds with

Theologian: “Machines will never achieve consciousness and will never have souls.” Atheist: “They do not need consciousness, simple awareness self will do, and no one has a soul.” Or,

Creationist: “If Gd intended man to fly, he would have given him wings.” Evolutionist: “We have been inventing tools to make our lives better since the beginning of history. Watson is simply another tool that we have created with our G-d-given brains!” If you spend a few minutes and take even a cursory look though the Interweb, you will find an extraordinary amount of writings by passionate parties on both sides of the John Henry argument. (If you don’t get the reference to John Henry, he was a “steel driving man,” a mythological 19th century folk hero who collapsed and died after winning a race with a steam-powered hammer. Good story, and there’s a pretty good song that goes with it too. Sadly, it’s the wrong argument and absolutely the wrong way to look at the event. First, let’s congratulate IBM and the producers of

electric lights. Although Tesla and Westinghouse ultimately won, the real winner was science and innovation – for the first time in history; people saw (in a dramatic fashion) how electric light bulbs were going to change our world. It is in this spirit that we should look at the IBM Jeopardy Challenge. And it is in this spirit that we should applaud Watson. This technology represents American know-how, American ingenuity and clearly demonstrates the power and promise of corporate research and development departments. This was a wonderful demon-

stration of the nexus of pure scientific research and applied engineering. Watson represents the highest, best purpose of our educational system in America – to relentlessly explore the boundaries of our imaginations and to seek answers to questions we do not even yet know how to ask. We live in the Information Age and information is the most valuable currency of our time. If the United States is to remain a superpower, it needs to be a digital super-power and an Information super-power. Equally importantly, there are more honors students in China and more honors student in India than there are students in the United States. We need to inspire our children to become world-class experts in the arts and sciences – brilliant young minds will ensure our posterity. You may think that Watson is a machine and that, because it has a name and a voice, you can anthropomorphize it. Don’t go there. It’s the wrong road. Watson is a humanized; show biz-ized, demonstration of technology that will keep us safe and secure in a Cyber-war. It is a clear path to better educational tools, better business tools, and tools that will help us live and work in a digital world. Kudos to IBM for building a machine that inspires us while it informs, enlightens and entertains. And, to those who think that this was a demonstration aimed at dehumanizing us – shame on you for being fooled by the machine! Shelly Palmer is the host of NBC Universal's Live Digital with Shelly Palmer, a weekly half-hour television show about living and working in a digital world.

Question: I was wondering whether or not it is safe to get a tattoo when you are pregnant? My birthday is almost here and my closest friends want to plan a tattoo party for me. I am really excited but also nervous. NSU: Thank you so much for asking this very unique question. During pregnancy many women usually avoid any behavior that may be seen as risky because of fear that they may hurt themselves or their baby. I am very happy you asked this question because some women may be too shy to ask their primary care physicians or gynecologists about tattooing during pregnancy. The primary concern for getting a tattoo during pregnancy is the risk of contracting an infection, such as Hepatitis B, Syphilis, and HIV. The risk is small but most doctors will likely recommend that you wait to get a tattoo until after your baby is born and you are done breastfeeding. There is also little information available about the safety of skin dyes used for tattooing during pregnancy. It is possible that the chemicals in the dye may affect the development of the baby during the first twelve weeks of pregnancy. However, the risks from the chemicals are unknown, as are any effects on the baby during the remainder of the pregnancy. Some women may have also heard that if they have a tattoo on their back, then they will be not be able to get an

epidural. There have been very few studies done on the risks that could exist for women who have tattoos on their back and receive an epidural. So far none of these studies have found any efficient data that shows that there are risks and most anesthesiologists have no problem giving an epidural to a woman with a back tattoo. If you want an epidural and have a tattoo on your back, you should contact the hospital and find out the policy in regard to tattoos and epidurals. If you decide to get a tattoo during your pregnancy, especially at a tattoo party here are some guidelines to make sure your artist is following proper safety procedures: they always wear gloves, they have an autoclave for sterilizing equipment, the floors and surfaces are all clean, all the needles that are used are new, disposable and made for single use only, the dressings are sterile packed and unopened, the dyes or ink used for the tattoo are also sterile packed and unopened, and that the artist is available if you have any problems. If you have a tattoo and question the practices of the artist or place where you had it done, make sure you are tested for Hepatitis, HIV, and Syphilis. For more information about pregnancy health and potential risks please visit The March of Dimes Foundation website at www.marchofdimes.com.

BY TANYA GREEN

Although I normally feature multiple pets in my column, this month I am featuring one very special cat. Sarno is a cat who is very deserving of the whole spotlight. Please read on to find out why.

Hi there, I’m Sarno. Could you be the pot of gold at the end of my rainbow this St. Patrick’s Day? What makes me deserving of being the only featured pet this month is that I am a special needs cat and I have been in foster care for a very long time. Please allow me to tell you my story and about my medical conditions.

About Sarno

* Status: Available for adoption * Species: Cat * Rescue ID: C080028 * General Color: Brown * Color: Brown * Current Age: 8 Years 9 Months (best estimate) * Declawed: No * Housetrained: Yes Special Needs: diabetic/FIV+

The rest of my story

Sarno is a classic tiger with black, gray and brown stripes, a cream chin and a brown spotted tummy. He also looks like he is wearing black lipstick! Sarno is an incredibly loving cat with every person and cat he meets. He will wrap his paws around your neck and rub his face back and forth to claim you as his new best friend. He constantly purrs, follows like a devoted dog, and sleeps at his foster mom's side. With newly arriving, scared cats in his foster home, he'll sleep near their cage to offer companionship and as soon as he's allowed, and he'll clean them like a loving momma cat. His joy is really remarkable, as Sarno was abandoned outside and came to PAWS with serious burns! He

does have some health effects from this earlier life, which his foster mom can tell you all about. But the added care you'd give him would be repaid a hundred fold by the touching moments you and your pets could share with this amazing soul.

About my special needs (medical conditions): As a cat, I am curious by nature. Of course, I wanted to find out about the things that the vet said to my foster mom about me, so I got a human friend to look the information up online. There was so much information out there it was overwhelming, so just the important stuff is outlined here. Please continue on. The following information on FIV has been taken directly from http://cats.about.com/cs/healthis sues/a/fiv_in_cats.htm. Please note that this is only a small piece of the information related to my disease.

FIV is Not a Mandatory Death Sentence

It is important to realize that a positive test for FIV is not a mandatory death sentence. With a high protein diet and aggressive treatment of secondary infections, an FIV-positive cat can lead a reasonably normal life span. Dr. Mike Richards says, "Feline immundeficiency virus infection does not lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in cats as often as human immunodeficiency virus leads to AIDS in people." The largest threat to FIV-positive cats is secondary infections, such as bladder, skin, and upper respiratory infections. Kidney failure is also frequently seen in cats with FIV. These secondary infections should be treated promptly and aggressively in any cat, but especially with an FIV cat.

FIV (Feline Immumodeficiency Virus) is a retrovirus in the same family as the human AIDS virus, with a few significant differences. It is estimated that in the United States, 2% of cats are infected with the FIV virus. Saliva to

blood (biting) is generally accepted as the primary source of spreading the virus, and it is unlikely (but not impossible) that cats will spread FIV by drinking or eating out of the same food dish, or by mutual grooming. It is not surprising that outdoor cats are particularly susceptible to the virus, and the best way to prevent infection with FIV virus is to ensure that your cat always stays indoors, which eliminates the possibility of contact with FIV cats. Another, less common means of transmission is from the mother cat (Queen) to her kittens during gestation, during birth, or by nursing. There is comfort in the fact that not all FIV queens pass the virus on to their kittens. This phenomenon is not fully understood, but all kittens from FIV mothers should be tested for the FIV antibodies after six months. In regards to my diabetes, it is just the same as managing the condition in humans. If you are unfamiliar with diabetes then I suggest searching the web and going to sites such as WebMD.com for humans and petplace.com for animals. Before I bid farewell or say hello in person when you adopt me, I would like to be the one to update you on my friends who have been featured previously. Cooper Nowell (Nov. 2010) and Narbi and Romeo (Dec 2010) are still waiting to be adopted. Babe (Nov 2010) and Bobbi (Dec 2010) have been adopted! Congratulations girls!! Goodbye for now and remember you can read more about me and my other friends at PAWS by going to Pawswakefield.rescuegroups.or g. We are also on Facebook.

A Gem of a Seafood Restaurant on the North Shore BY TRIPP CAREY

Finz Seafood Restaurant, or simply Finz, is a seafood and waterfront restaurant. It is located on Pickering Wharf in Salem, Ma. The Building Finz occupies used to be the former Chase House, a popular bar and improv performance venue. The restaurant has been open for 10 years and will be celebrating its decade anniversary in April. The restaurant is surrounded by a waterfront that leads out to Salem Harbor. The place exhibits a nice dining atmosphere, inside and out, on the sunlit deck. There’s plenty of places to relax, including various tables, booths, comfy couches, as well as a complete bar which creates and showcases raw oysters, clams, scallops and shrimp before your eyes; while you enjoy their many trademark martinis. Some of the classic dishes that the restaurant serves are buffalo calamari with a battered coating and a blue cheese sauce.

Any restaurant can make clam chowder, but Finz makes it unique because of its creamy base, with lightly cooked seafood mixed in. They also make delicious fried clams that come in the classic newspaper bag with tartar sauce or a spicy remoulade sauce. The main entrees offer many hits to choose from. If you are a “plain Jane” who likes to play it safe, there is the classic cheeseburger with limitless toppings to add to your burger. Also, there are chicken fingers, wings and pastas on the kid’s menu for that simple demographic. Another great entrée is the sesame seed tuna with fresh green noodles, wasabi and ginger. For the real seafood fans, there is fresh lobster in three forms: lobster mac and cheese, lobster steamed or

baked, and the lobster roll. Below is a quick but thoughtful interview with the owner and founder of the restaurant, George Carey.

Q. What is your favorite aspect of Finz? A: Al Fresco dining, the waterfront, and great local seafood. It has a nice relaxing atmosphere. Q: What inspired you to open your own restaurant? A: I was inspired to open my own restaurant for a few reasons. I have been working in the food service industry my whole career. I liked working in the field of culinary arts and the restaurant business. Before I started my own restaurant, I worked my way up from manager of a single establishment and eventually was managing a series of restaurants for different chains (Bennigan’s, Bertucci’s and Olive Garden). After a certain point in time and having gained a lot of professional experience, I believed I could go on and manage a restaurant best on my own. In other words, I’m following the

path of an entrepreneur and practicing those skills. Q:. If you were to make a selection of dishes from the menu for a meal, what would you order? A: Appetizer: raw oysters on the half shell.

Entrée: Seared Tuna Cocktail: Local Ipswich Premium Ale, micro-brewed (brewed locally) Dessert: Our classic Key Lime Pie Overall, Finz is a great restaurant and tourist destination for people looking for somewhere to relax and even for those looking for a quick bite to eat; please free to stop on by.

King Of Limbs Continued from Page 1

This track is a perfect example of the evolution of Thom Yorke’s voice. When Radiohead first formed, his voice wasn’t entirely a standalone element in the band; at times feeling like a generic 90s rock singer on their first album (Pablo Honey). However, over time, his voice has become more atmospheric. It doesn’t serve as a lyrical dispenser anymore; it serves as a unique and beautiful instrument. Sounding like a single they released while on a hiatus in 2009 (before this particular album), “Morning Mr. Magpie” continues the dark feel of this album. Much like its predecessor (In Rainbows) The King of Limbs features a similar electronic sound that wasn’t readily apparent in their earlier work. However, the electronic sound in this song and, overall, this album is in a darker vein. At times, “Magpie” sounds like a weird hybrid of a dubstep song and a post-rock song; droning and bassy but also feeling incredibly atmospheric. This creates a sound unlike anything on any of their previous endeavors. Much like the other tracks, “Little By Little” starts out with a whole mess of instruments crashing and starting at the same time. Production-wise, this track feels a lot like a Miles Davis or John Coltrane track; intense layering of instruments that seem to be playing at different tempos. Though it may sound like a metaphorical trainwreck, the sound produced in this song is incredibly fluid and, overall, is one of the most notable tracks on this album. The shortest track on the album and the most electronic, “Feral” features drum loop similar to that of the Amen Break. Strewn throughout the rest of the track are odd sounds and even other instrumental

Flower” is arguably one of the best singles Radiohead has released since OK Computer’s “Karma Police.” The angelic quality of Thom’s voice has never been this powerful; at times it feels as though the rest of the band pales in comparison to his singing on this track. As made evident in the music video for this song, this song is The King of Limbs’ most “danceable” and accessible track. Starting out with a piano that sounds like it’s being played under water, “Codex” is the only track on this album that can easily be compare to another song of theirs. “Codex” sounds like the long lost cousin of Amnesiac’s “Pyramid Song” which, much like this track, predominantly Thom Yorke is playing piano and singing. Though sounding more “epic” in scale (featuring what sounds to me like an orchestra near the tail end of the song), “Codex” is defiantly in a lighter vein than “Pyramid Song.” Even though it’s hard to dissect what Thom is

Stand up for what you believe, stand up for others, say what you feel, take charge, get physical if you have to remove a threat, but at the same time, none of us are mechanical, brute, robotic machines that rule the universe, and I don’t see any girl wanting or needing this in their life. What woman wants a man that has no heart, or no understanding of her feelings when she is upset and needs you by her side? The tough guy act gets old fast. A real man has strengths that often go unnoticed, until those strengths need

to be revealed. There are some that portray themselves as leaders, looking down to others from grand podiums of their own creation - with a glare in their eyes - feeling the rush from the power that they feel they have gained as they become more skilled at pushing others to the ground to get what they desire. There are others who try their best to lead, knowing their strengths and their weaknesses, looking to others for valuable input – with a glare in their eyes – as they stand grounded, enjoying and sharing the emotions that they feel from challenging

interludes. Other members chime in (including an incredibly distorted vocal track a-la “Reckoner” from In Rainbows) but ultimately this song is an instrumental show of force for drummer Phil Selway. Serving as the first single off of this album, “Lotus

actually saying. In a similar vein to the previous song, “Give Up The Ghost” is another light-hearted song. The odd layered background singing juxtaposed on Thom’s voice and a repetitive acoustic guitar gives this song a Neil Young Le Noise –era feel.

feel that the ladder had but with a stranger and darker twist. They’ve experimented with this darker sound in the past; at times the post-rock feel of this album is reminiscent of 2001’s Amnesiac, but the sound was never fully developed until now. Is this a bad thing? Not entirely.

Lead Singer Thom Yorke in the promotional video for the single “Lotus Flower”

The album’s final track, “Separator,” is an incredible and interesting way to close this album out. “Separator” takes little elements from all the other tracks on this album and creates its own sound. It doesn’t feel like a traditional ending to an album, however. The end of this track doesn’t feel like a proper album ending but, at the same time, how else could someone end an album like this? The eerie Thom verse (“Wake me up, wake me up”) cycles through the last few moments of the track and, in the end, that’s what it feels like when this album ends. The dream-pop feel of the track sums up the whole album; lucid at times but in the end proves to be incredibly satisfying. The moody serenade of “Separator” makes you wonder if the whole entire album was, in fact, a dream. Upon various relistens, it’s pretty hard to tell. On the whole, The King of Limbs plays out like In Rainbows’ darker cousin; featuring the same pseudo-electro

themselves and trying to accomplish things in life. How would you define yourself?

It’s safe to say that The King of Limbs is not their most accessible album and certainly won’t get a whole lot of air-play (minus their brilliant single “Lotus Flower”). That being said, this isn’t what their aiming for; Radiohead has proven time and time again that they have transcended the need for accessible albums and catchy tunes. Their music serves as an odd and powerful form of artistic expression and, at times, music for musicians. With this album, Radiohead has created a very strong album cycle that is not only meant to be listened to as a continuum, but deserves it. Upon each re-listen, you will begin to notice stranger subtleties that the band has hidden though the album. This album also serves as proof that the band can successfully re-imagine themselves with each album release. Overall, Radiohead is one of the few bands that can successfully tear their sound

apart and re-construct it with each album release. Sure, some of their albums sound similar and some inter-track influence is evident but, overall, each album is entirely different. As I said earlier, The King of Limbs “plays out” like the darker cousin of In Rainbows, but in the end they are two completely separate entities that can only be lucidly compared to each other. The King of Limbs is named after an ancient oak tree in Wiltshire's Savernake Forest that has been growing for over 1,000 years. The title is far from accidental; this album is definitely one that is supposed to grow on the listener over time. Who knows, maybe over the next thousand years this album might be labeled the greatest album of all time. Until then, The King of Limbs serves as the bands most personal and dense effort that, at this point, is one of their best efforts in nearly ten years. With the release of this album, many people have begun to speculate on the prospect of a second release this year (or even this Spring). Many people citing how the original name of the last track (“Separator”) was “Mouse Dog Bird” and critics and fans alike think that this track could literally be “separating” this album from a further release to coincide with the physical release of this album in a few short months. Regardless of these conspiracies being true or not, this release is perfect in itself. This being said, more music by Radiohead this year is more than welcome. The digital version of this album is available now on thekingoflimbs.com. The CD release is due out March 29 and the special “newspaper album” edition of the album is available on kingoflimbs.com and is set to be shipped on May 9.

A Movie Review of An American Werewolf in London (1981)

BY JACQUELINE RAUBACH

This movie is about two boys who visit London and encounter something they never would have imaginied. It opens up with the two boys Jack Goodman (played by Griffin Dunne) and David Kessler (played by David Naughton) being dropped off at a town called East Proctor. There they stop off at a pub called The Slaughtered Lamb. The first thing that gets their attention is the logo for the pub. There is no lamb, only a wolf’s head on a sword. The pub served no food, only spirits and biz. After asking about a strange five pointed star, or pentangle, that is on the wall, the people in the pub go silent. Nervous, Jack and David leave. The bar tender tries to convince the others to keep them in the pub for their own safety, but to no avail, some of the men advise the boys to stick to the road, steer clear of the moors, and to “beware the moon.”

Of course this means nothing to the boys at first, until they are attacked by a lycanthrope, or werewolf. Jack is attacked first and killed. David is also attacked but the people from the bar come to the rescue and shoot the beast down. David wakes up in the hospital after being unconscious for three weeks. A little while after he wakes up, now undead, Jack appears and warns him that he will become a werewolf and kill people unless he takes his own life. David refuses to listen until the full moon comes. This movie involves a great transformation scene. The graphics are not too bad, and it is really well done. The movie gives you feelings of suspense, excitement, and nervous butterflies. The beast is well made and is very realistic. The characters are interesting, and it is a great movie - rated R. The movie industries are actually remaking the movie, and it is scheduled to arrive in theaters sometime in 2011.

Why Arcade Fire Matters

BY CHRIS RICCI The 53rd annual Grammy Awards, much like the years before, were relatively predictable. Many of the bigticket acts (Eminem and Lady Antebellum, to name a few) took home the awards the media hyped and predicted would win. Suffice to say, the Grammys ran as usual. The show itself seems to serve as a sort-of build up to the main event; Album of the Year. This year the contenders for said award were also predictable; Eminem, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Lady Antebellum. Also included was the Canadian rock-band Arcade

singer Win Butler started his acceptance speech with a puzzled “what the hell?”). In the end, Arcade Fire abruptly ended their speech and played another song for the audience, who, after careful observation, accepted the fact they beat the odds and won. This being said, the internet was less accepting. Shortly after they took their award, thousands of twitter accounts and blogs lit up with nothing but harsh criticism. “Ok, I'm not THAT old, but who's Arcade Fire” tweeted 80’s music video starlet Tawny Kitaen, “and worse, who the HELL thinks their good?" Other

Fire but, seeing that the odds were strongly in the favor of Lady Gaga and Eminem, they were sort-of brushed off as a “dark horse.” In fact, while the award was being presented, Arcade Fire was standing backstage while the other acts were seated comfortably in the audience. In, arguably, one of the biggest “upsets” in Grammy history, Arcade Fire beat out the main-stream competition and took home Album of the Year. Not only was the audience shocked at the result, the band was surprised as well (lead

posters were more critical, including an anonymous blog poster who outright said “I cannot believe that unknown artists will earn a Grammy while world-renowned artists like Justin and Lady Gaga don’t.” Arcade Fire’s victory was a trending topic on twitter for nearly three days and over half of the posts weren’t positive. This begs the question, who ARE Arcade Fire and why did they deserve that award in the first place? To answer the first question, Arcade Fire are an Continued to page 11

Why “Screwed” (2000) is One of the Best Comedy Films Ever Made

BY TRIPP CAREY

The film “Screwed” premiered in theaters on May 12th, 2000. Unfortunately it grossed only $6,982,680 and was critically dismissed by everyone, then quietly released to DVD. This film is a rarity because it has notable and talented people across the board. First off, the film is directed by the duo Scott and Larry Alexander Karaszewski, who, if you don’t know them, before making this comedic masterpiece, worked with Tim Burton on his directed biopic of cult filmmaker Edward Wood Jr. titled “Ed Wood.” They also wrote the screenplays for the Hustler magazine founder Larry Flynt (“The People vs. Larry Flynt”) and Andy Kaufman (“Man on the Moon”), both of which were directed by Milos Foreman. Norm Macdonald has a small cameo in both of those films. He started his career as a standup comedian during his early adult years, and he became well known for being a weekend update anchor, performer and writer for his 3 year tenure on Saturday Night Live. However, it’s hard to gather data on his early life and his educational background because he is notorious for fabricating information and has made conflicting statements. The film also stars Dave Chappelle and Danny Devito, who have already had notable film careers of their own. Norm Macdonald plays an overworked and deprived chauffeur/butler named Willard Fillmore. He works for wealthy, old, cold and crabby Miss Crock (Elaine Strich), doing backbreaking tasks around her big mansion. Miss Crock also owned and ran a conglomerate pastry factory for over ten years with her close assistant Chip (Sherman

Hemsley). One day in the evening, while Willard Fillmore coincidentally chases Miss Crock’s spoiled dog Muffin to the balcony window, he overhears Miss Crock and Chip talking about firing him on Christmas day, to his horror. He then goes to visit his best friend

of them trying to kidnap the dog out of the house and after succeeding, the dog escapes back to the house). The next morning, instead of the dog being kidnapped, Miss Crock believes Willard the Chauffeur has been kidnapped. This leads to the police getting involved with the investigation, led by detec-

It’s that time of year again for movies to get their rewards from critics around the world. In this case, let’s take a gander at who got nominated for a Golden Globe Award and a Critics Choice Award and see who won. Since this month is Women’s History month, let’s take a look at the ladies who mattered this year! Critic’s Choice Awards: For Best Actress: Annette Bening for “The Kids Are All Right” (2010) Nicole Kidman for “Rabbit’s Hole” (2010) Jennifer Lawrence for “Winter’s Bone” (2010) Natalie Portman for “Black Swan” (2010) “Winner” Noomi Repace for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (2009) Michelle Williams for “Blue Valentine” (2010)

Rusty P. Hayes (Dave Chappelle), who is hosting a Christmas event at his chicken restaurant. Rusty recommends that Willard stop working for the “ballbuster” (Miss Crock). Willard sadly states that his dad died working for her in the same position that he inherited and that on his deathbed he said, “stick with Miss Crock; you will get ahead.” Willard doubts that he will get ahead working for her, but he can find no alternatives. Then the film really takes off when they plot to kidnap her dog and hold it for ransom as revenge. Of course, this being a comedy, it goes wrong (with a hilarious scene of both

tive/chief (Daniel Benzali). Realizing their plan has gone awry, Rusty and Willard decide to stay kidnapped so Miss Crock will pay the ransom. The police detective goes to visit Dave Chappelle’s character at his restaurant, lying about Willard’s whereabouts. Next, they go to the morgue and find information on Hillary, Norm’s good friend/girlfriend (Sarah Silverman) who is angry to discover that Norm isn’t really kidnapped. At the morgue freezer, they meet a creepy guy named Grover Cleveland (played perfectly by Danny Devito) and ask him to plant a body in his clothes so everyone CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

This has been a lucky year for Natalie Portman; after winning both awards and for being nominated for an Oscar as best actress in a lead role. Before all this happened, she was best known for appearing in Star Wars Episodes I, II, and III and V for Vendetta. She really must have danced her heart out in this movie if it means winning both these awards. She might be unknown for her film career, but when we are talking about “The Fighter” Melissa Leo’s name starts popping up quite a bit. Before this movie, I only thought that the Rocky movies were the only true boxing movies out there. However, “The Fighter” proves to be a better film. It’s a welldone boxing movie based on a remarkable true story (that was filmed in Lexington and Lowell Massachusetts) that changes everything when it comes to boxing films.

God’s Sent

BY JAMIE CICCIO

There’s pure love in your eyes when you look into mine, Your the light that makes me shine, Your a reality that I have prayed for many times, A gift that helped me to revive, With you by my side this life I shall never again feel deprived, Your more than a lost love that has been found, Your the true meaning of God's work & until our introduction I will await your smile, The others compete for this heart but your the truth, so this heart is held hostage until the second I meet You.

How I once I felt... BY JAMIE CICCIO

I see an expression on your face that I can't place, The unsettling tone in your voice seems to never fade, Patiently I stall to deliver you news which may lead us to another misunderstanding, You grasp only the negatives when I speak everytime we try communicating, I fall asleep nightly with a lack of wanting to wake up beside you, When you question my acts I often feel like a beautiful butterfly held hostage in a cacoon, Falsely accused leaves my actions discrete with a lack of words to describe my feelings, This unimaginable life I lead with him is unappealing, I usually beg for a new beginning, I pray that this new beginning will start without you no longer in it, My past now is so precious because I made my own decisions, Today my own thoughts have no meaning, My family has given me some space hoping i'd soon alleviate myself from this person who I fear, Why does it seem like everytime I leave I end up right back into the devils care, Moments seem lifeless when he is close to me, My heart pumps but its like it skips many beats, He looks at me as if he was my maker and I am to follow his every move, Fortunately today He can no longer interfere with my pleasant moods, Today I move steadily at my own pace, You are now a memory that I tuck far away.....

BY NELSON BAKER

The Strength to Carry On

When he heard shots fired, Jared knew it was time to leave. A riot had apparently broken out again, but this one seemed worse than the others. Living on the streets was difficult enough without people killing each other while you tried to sleep. He had hoped it would only be a few more weeks until he landed a job, and had enough to rent a room in the area. Some things went wrong, and that’s life. All he wanted was another chance to start over, maybe meet a great girl to walk beside him. This is what kept him strong. For now, his wishes were pushed to the back of his mind. Since Jared was only partially out of sight, lying behind the dumpster on Herk’s Alley, he knew he would eventually be discovered if he stayed. He couldn’t take that chance, not after the gunshots.

He popped out from underneath a layer of not-so-smelly trash that served as not only camouflage, but warmth, and walked at a brisk pace. People were shouting at every angle, it seemed – violently. He just wanted to survive another night, and he knew there had to be some place he could take shelter until the riot passed. Another shot, but this one had to be close, maybe the next street over. He had no idea what the riot was all about – politics, injustice, poverty; there was no telling. It didn’t matter to Jared. He was not involved. Coming to the end of the alley, where an intersecting street went left and right, Jared was confronted by a man who was hanging out of his window directly above him. He threw a beer bottle at him, smashing it near his feet. “I know you ain’t walkin around with that attitude on my street. You better take that look off your face before I

throw a bullet next time.” Jared had no response. There was no talking to someone like that. Obviously, he was drunk or high, probably roughed up by the violence of the neighborhood for too long, and had no idea that Jared’s serious expression portrayed fear more than anything else. He walked left down Balker Street, and felt another bottle smash behind him. Across the street, he saw passing shadows, and he couldn’t tell where they were coming from. They were like ghosts, and they were multiplying. Guns were firing pretty steadily now, and he felt lucky that he had not yet been hit. He was sure the shootings were random, coinciding with some sort of blatant hatred and desire to inflict as much pain as possible on the surroundings of a torn city that cared for no one and nothing. Why Arcade Fire Matters Continued from page 8

indie-rock band that were formed in Canada in 2001. It started as a trio which included lead singer and songwriter Win Butler, drummer and multiinstrumentalist Regine Chassagne and guitarist Josh Deu. Sound-wise, the band has been compared to the likes of David Bowie and The Who with incredibly dense and well-layered production. By the time their first album came out (Funeral in 2004), Arcade Fire saw the departure of Josh Deu. However, the band also saw the addition of five other members who play a wide array of instru-

ate the news, and they especially don’t sell out major stadiums and have hits you would hear on pop radio. Is this necessarily a bad thing? Apparently so; some of the people who posted online after Arcade Fire’s win expressed how people who are “more famous” deserve the award over a “nobody.” How does this make sense?! If someone is famous to the point where they are a household name, do they really need an award to stroke their ego more? Album of the Year implies that the winning album displays production, performance, lyrical content, and overall pizzazz that surpass

ARCADE FIRE AT THE GRAMMYS ments including the harp and the xylophone. Upon its release, Funeral garnered an incredible amount of critical praise and even reached the top of many publications “Top albums of 2004” lists. 2007 saw the release of their second album, Neon Bible, which also gathered an incredible amount of acclaim. The album also got the attention of superstar David Bowie and director and ex-Monty Python member Terry Gilliam who, eventually, directed one of their videos. The band embarked on a massive intercontinental tour for the album (including two free shows in 2008 to support Barack Obama) that exceeded over one hundred different venues. The band took a quick break in 2009 and began working on material that would eventually form their third and, now, Grammy award winning album The Suburbs. Out of all the albums nominated, The Suburbs was easily the best example of music in 2010. The playing on the album is top-notch and is only intensified with the vast amount of instruments featured on it. Even though the amount of instruments on the album was somewhat daunting, the album wasn’t chaotic. In fact, the immense sound created by Arcade Fire on this album is, at times, beautiful. The album was a perfect representation of all things rock-and-roll in 2010 and is definitely leading the pack for the best albums of the decade. Why is it such a big deal that they won? They obviously put some serious work into making albums and have garnered a major amount of critical acclaim. However, they aren’t as “big” as the other acts. They haven’t sold their songs to commercials, they don’t perme-

any other album that is nominated. It does NOT imply that the winning album is the one that sold the most or the one that has gotten the most publicity. It’s hard to go into an award show without a sort-of bias. Of course you WANT your favorite artist to win, but you can’t really be assured that they DESERVE it until you know their competition. It’s pretty easy to see that most of the people who posted the less-thanflattering comments about Arcade Fire didn’t know anything about them and, obviously, didn’t listen to the album. I would suggest that, if you are going to watch an award show of this caliber, at least have a vague idea as to who is in the competition. Who knows, you might enjoy the show even more. Another profound statement that startled me was that they didn’t deserve to win because they were the “dark horse.” What happened to the concept of the American Dream? Isn’t a rags-to-riches story more satisfying than seeing the person who’s on top of the world stay on the same course? Every artist in the industry has to start somewhere and strives to get attention. Arcade Fire is a perfect example of this; a band that critics love but no-one has heard of. They’ve tried so hard to break into the mainstream but have failed time and time again. Because of this award, they are known around the world. If nothing else, rapper Kanye West summed up the significance of their win on his twitter: “There is hope! Feels like we all win when something like this happens!”

Imagine That Continued from page 10

After a while, the sounds of terror were fading away as he had traveled at a good pace for a good ten minutes now. His heartbeat was slowing, and normal breathing was gradually returning. There was a good place to rest behind the monument that marked the entrance to Grigg’s Cemetery. It was completely hidden from sight. Before he could reach his destination, a woman screamed, jumpstarting his heart once more. “Help me! You have to

possessed. Just down the way, in the direction he had been walking, a group of 3 or 4 guys were making a lot of noise, and a little girl – maybe 7 years old – was cowering in a corner. She looked terrified. Jared watched, and could see that they were about to hurt her, or worse. Something had to be done, but, he had no idea what he would do. He was not the fighting type. He looked again at the woman, who, clearly horrified, was completely

help me!” “What’s wrong? What happened?” “Please. They took my little girl. Please help me.” She cried, and revealed a fresh bruise, but it didn’t take anything away from the beauty she

helpless against a group of violent and aggressive criminals – much more helpless than he was. For a moment, he thought of just walking away. This was not his fight. But then, he realized those feelings would

will think that he is dead. Willard drops Rusty off at the airport and dresses up as the kidnapper, luring in Miss Crock so he can take the ransom money (who is working with the police). Willard and Rusty run off victoriously with the money. From there on out, the plot gets even more out of control. After Willard receives the ransom money, he is hilariously robbed by a couple of kids with a tazer. He ends up at the hospital with Rusty thinking Willard double-crossed them. This film, besides it’s obvious presidential references via character names, pays tribute to the classic screwball comedies of the 1930’s and 1940’s. Norm MacDonald and Dave Chappelle’s comedic chemistry go well together. They are wonderful in respect that whatever funny dialog or appropriate emotional response Norm has, Dave will build on it. One of the reoccurring gags is that whenever Dave Chappelle’s character gets scared, he will impulsively grab a lamp or nearby object and knock the person out. This movie is refreshing because Norm, Dave And Danny Devito play such likeable characters. Dave Chapelle, also is very likeable in this movie because he isn’t playing off the race card or other cheap standup or skits he later becomes famous for on the Chappelle’s Show. For a comedy movie, his character Rusty P. Hayes is

smart, clever and has emotional depth. The same goes for Sarah Silverman (who was starting out as a performer/writer along with Norm at the same time on Saturday Night Live) plays a likeable character named Hillary. Her character is similar to Dave’s and is again a sharp contrast to her raunchy, sarcastic stuff she becomes famous for later. Danny Devito is also notable because, along with Norm and Dave, his Grover Cleveland character is humorous and entertaining. Unlike his supporting roles in the past, his character is perfectly creepy and fits the comedic atmosphere around him, especially the scene when he is first introduced. It’s worth noting that the veteran actors of Elaine Strich, Daniel Benzali and Sherman Hemsley also add dimensions and depth to this screwball comedy in their respected roles and their contributions to the plot. Overall, “Screwed” is a real comic gem because

surely torment him for the rest of this life. He had to do this. He had no choice. Looking into her heartbroken eyes, he knew it was the right thing to do. “Just wait here. I’ll try, okay? I’ll try.” “Thank you so much. Oh God. Thank you. Please be careful.” She looked into his eyes, saying so much without speaking any further. He began his walk toward the men. He wondered if they were carrying guns. He had no plan, but he knew this was possible. Anything is possible, especially when you know you’re doing what is right – when you’re doing good. Jared suddenly felt like he was in a new world, with different emotions pulsing through him stronger than ever before. All of his focus was directed on the men, the ones that, if he couldn’t stop, could actually rape and kill that little girl. This was not going to happen. He had to believe that, as he calmly walked into their vicinity, and as they looked into his eyes – his determined eyes. Jared wanted to start over – meet a great girl. The last thing he thought of that he felt gave him even more inner strength to do what he had to do, was that, maybe he already met her.

“Screwed” Continued from page 9

they take a classic revenge plot and create a fresh story out of it. The humor is generated from the whole cast. The film is rare in the way that the film inhibits smart sophisticated humor that’s simple at its base and doesn’t involve bathroom or pot jokes like countless other movies (see Adam Sandler’s or Jim Carrey’s comedy movies or any modern comedy). It’s a real shame Norm’s career took a fall or crashed after this and that these actors didn’t star together again, especially Norm and Dave. Luckily, all the main actors in the movie (including those in the smaller roles) are still alive. Hopefully they can rise back up again and star together on the big screen. Finally, perhaps the finest aspect of this film is that even though it’s been at least a decade since the films release, it shows no sign of becoming dated. In other words, it can be argued that it’s become timeless.

Participate in History and Celebrate the Power of Women!

All NSCC students, faculty and staff, as well as community members are invited to participate in a symbolic reenactment of the historic day, March 7, 1860, when hundreds of women shoeworkers joined ranks with thousands of their male counterparts in a huge march through the streets of Lynn demanding higher wages. It was one of the nation’s earliest large scale labor actions taken by women and drew national attention. The “Great Shoemakers’ Strike of 1860” marked a significant moment in American labor relations, and with the participation of women, even drew the attention and support of Presidential candidate, Abraham Lincoln.

Spotlight On: John Hruska, Student Representative on NSCC’s Board of Trustees For all those who may think that college is not for them, consider this. John Hruska, recently elected student representative to the North Shore Community College Board of Trustees, dropped out of high school in the ninth grade. He found a great paying job despite his lack of education and it wasn’t until his earnings were diminished by 60 percent over two years that he realized he needed to do something more with his life. Today the business transfer student has a passion for learning, meeting people, and NSCC. Hruska worked in the construction field and as a factory worker at The Boston Globe. “I got my GED in Lynn in 2004. I tried Bunker Hill Community College, but it didn’t feel right at the time. I knew a few people who had come to North Shore so when I decided to go back to school, I thought I’d try it. I started with a basic drawing course in the fall of 2009 and quickly fell in love with the place.

Hruska says he has thrived due to a lot of good guidance along the way. “I met with a student advisor who helped point me in the right direction, particularly by encouraging me to take a public speaking class. This challenged me to engage with my classmates. Then last spring the

same advisor and my public speaking teacher suggested that I get involved with student government. I decided to check it out, then was encouraged to run for an executive position by the Student Government advisor. I feel as if everything has fallen into place for me here. Now I

seek to learn, and NSCC makes it so easy. The college is so student focused, friendly, welcoming and professional. I like to interact and learn everything I can,” he explained. As student trustee, Hruska, a native Czechoslovakian, strives to inform and engage his fellow students. “Too many students come in, get only what they need, and leave. They don’t take advantage of the tremendous resources this college has to offer. I’m doing what I can to change that. I keep my ear to the ground to determine what issues the students have and share those with the Board. And, I recruit a lot for student government,” he said. Hruska moved to the United States with his mother in 1986. He credits her with always exposing him to diverse experiences including art, museums, culture and history. “It seemed a drag at the time, but now I so appreciate her always encouraging me to try new things.” Yet he had never read a book before his 18th year. “My job at the Globe was easy and I would get bored so I read the local papers and eventually tried a few books. I quickly realized how awesome reading could be

and now I’m an avid reader.” Hruska, who is set to graduate in the spring, plans to transfer to continue his education. “I want to get a master’s degree and would like to find an international career that combines management, technology and a green focus. I’m not quite sure what that will be, but at some point I’d like to come back to NSCC and teach, at least part-time,” he said. “Every day I am here, this place amazes me more. The best part is the people that I’ve met here. I’ve been lucky to be around students, staff, administrators and faculty that have gone to great lengths to help me along the way. I wouldn’t be who and where I am if it wasn’t for them,” he noted. “North Shore offers you a platform to do whatever you want to do. You get information which gives you options and those options provide you with choices. You make your choice and then it’s up to you. You don’t get an education, you take one. I like to tell people who haven’t tried college that it’s not easy, but it’s not hard either. I want everyone who comes to NSCC to get for themselves all that I have gotten out of NSCC.”
