Designer Natasha Esch inside her new shop, Monc XIII.

If East Hampton is the most fashion-focused of all the villages on Long Island’s East End, then Sag Harbor is definitely its most design-centric. The former whaling town is rife with top-notch antiques and design shops, from the exquisitely edited Bloom to local favorites Ruby Beets and Jed. The latest newcomer is Monc XIII, which opened just before Memorial Day weekend and offers a stylish selection of new and vintage pieces inside a strikingly renovated 2,400-square-foot historic building just off Main Street. You can’t miss the violet Dutch door.

The façade of the shop’s historic building, with its distinctive purple door.

Monc XIII is the brainchild of decorator and former head of Wilhelmina Models Worldwide Natasha Esch and her husband, Matthew Coffin, a web entrepreneur. Previously based in Los Angeles, the couple relocated with daughter Orchid and son Sky to the Hamptons full-time, looking for a quieter life. “I had a great run for a dozen years in L.A.,” Esch says, “but I’d become a mom and wanted to curate my own vision of what I like. I thought a store would be the best way to convey that.” And Sag Harbor seemed the ideal spot. “The vibe was right,” she explains. “The town has such great antiques shops.” So what’s the story behind the unusual name? It’s an acronym of sorts: “Monc” comes from Matthew, Orchid, and Natasha Coffin, while the Roman numerals for 13 represent Sky’s birth date.

The renovated interior before installation.

Esch and Coffin worked with New York City architect Martin Sosa and local builder Tom O’Donoghue on a two-year transformation of the historic 1890 structure, which previously housed a pair of apartments above two separate storefronts. They took the building down to the studs, refashioning it as an airy double-height space with rustic posts and beams salvaged from an old southern barn, recycled-oak floor boards, and luminous Venetian plaster walls. “It’s definitely my vision of design: old but modern, a mix of periods, all within a very traditional structure,” Esch says. The abundant wood and metal is a nod to the 1950s French industrial look. “There’s an honesty in the materials that fits nicely with the feel of Sag Harbor,” she adds. The assorted industrial light fixtures hanging throughout the store are European designs Esch found in England and had rewired.

A view of the main floor from the circular staircase.

The tightly edited mix of merchandise reflects Esch’s rustic-industrial aesthetic. There’s vintage midcentury furniture—clubby Chesterfields, an Arne Norell leather safari chair—as well as a small selection of antiques; alpaca-wool throws from the Patagonian design company Pehuén; handmade knives from the venerable Italian cutlery house Berti; handsome trays by Steven Gambrel for the Lacquer Co.; beautiful ceramics by French artist Gilles Caffier; and all the hostess gifts and housewares one might need in the Hamptons: Sheffield silver, Cire Trudon and Frédéric Malle candles, and mountains of old books by Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck. For something more over-the-top, consider a collection of leather-wrapped Coleman coolers, thermoses, and pocket flasks, all hand-stitched in Spain. Hemingway would approve. The main draw of the Hamptons each summer is, of course, the beautiful beaches, see-and-be-scene, and the charming farm-stand dotted landscape. But once you've reached this ritzy resort community, it's easy to find other attractions to enjoy, particularly—as you might expect from an area that's a magnet for the rich, fashionable, and famous— irresistible boutiques. Here's a handful of the Hamptons' top shops, including several that are perfect if you're on a houseguest's budget.

MONCXII Sag Harbor's MONC XIII has quickly become a tastemaker favorite for its hand picked selection of stylish home furnishings and house gifts that are chic and much more original than a bottle of wine. It feels more like a Soho boutique than something you'd find in a laidback resort town (which Sag Harbor, considered by many Hamptons regulars to be the area's most charming and relaxed town, really is). It's an ideal place to browse on a rainy day. Don't miss the lovely smaller home items like Cire Trudon deeply scented candles.

Sag Harbor Variety Store 5 & 10 A short stroll away is the Sag Harbor Variety Store 5 & 10, which is about as un-glitzy as a shop can get. This is the ideal place to inexpensively buy everything beachy you forgot at home, like basic rubber flip-flops, sun block, or a Styrofoam cooler. Plus, if you're traveling with kids, find essentials to keep them busy, like toys and a wide selection of jigsaw puzzles and crafts. The shop is beloved by Hamptons regulars, perhaps since it evokes a feeling of a time when things were simpler and slower. But even for first-timers, it's well worth a visit.

Sunbarth On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you're lucky enough to have swanky poolside plans for which your old Speedo just won't do, there's Sunbarth, a sleek little store on Job's Lane in Southampton. The focus here is guys' swimwear, with in-the-know brands like Orlebar Brown. This shop began as a pop-up store last summer, but was so popular it's now open full-time. (And if you're looking for a suitably chic women's bikini to match your new menswear purchase, look no further than French brand Eres' East Hampton boutique.)

Bookhampton Whichever Hampton you're visiting, one of the best ways to spend an afternoon is lounging in the sunshine with a great book. If you've left all your reading material (or Kindle) at home, the area's excellent mini-chain of bookshops, Bookhampton is the place to go. In all its locations (Southampton, East Hampton, and Sag Harbor, plus one on Long Island's nearby North Fork), Bookhampton is staffed by people that love to read, so you can walk in not knowing what you want and leave with a suitably enjoyable page turner. As you'd expect, they also stock lovely coffee table books (easy host gift) and children's books for families at the beach.

Gail Rothwell Of course, wherever you go in the Hamptons, there seems to be no shortage of hot, new convertibles and designer clothes. If you're looking for a splurge-y purchase to become one with the latter, head to Gail Rothwell in East Hampton. This inviting boutique stocks clothing and accessories from some of the world's top designers and fashion brands, like Jason Wu, Celine, Lanvin, and Oscar de la Renta. No, it's not the place for a bargain, but a purchase from here could just be the ultimate Hamptons souvenir. (For a less pricey selection of equally grand labels, Collette, with locations in Southampton and Sag Harbor, sells gently used high-end designer items by the likes of Chanel and Hermes as decidedly non-Hamptons prices.) THINKING OF A TRIP TO THE HAMPTONS?

SCORE UNIQUE FINDS FOR THE BEACH IN A DECIDEDLY SWISH ATMOSPHERE AT DAVID CHINES’S COPIOUS ROW BEACH IN SOUTHAMPTON. BY ANDREW C. STONE

As the well-heeled masses return—arms outstretched—to East End shops, David Chines waits calmly, confident that customers will fall head-over-Louboutins for Copious Row Beach. And with good reason: His new gallerylike boutique offers designer must-haves with relevance far beyond Coopers Beach. “We have a great range of apparel and accessories you can’t otherwise find in Southampton,” Chines says. “The designers I carry are exclusive to me in terms of distribution, which really speaks to a customer who wants to wear something beautiful to a party or benefit that others won’t show up in.” A former LVMH marketing exec who honed his style acumen working with Fendi and Givenchy, Chines prioritizes versatility. From the architectural elegance of Delpozo to the forward-thinking silhouettes of the CFDA Fashion Award-winning Brock Collection—with Judith Leiber, Sonia Rykiel, Tomas Maier, and other influential designers in between— Copious Row Beach is chockablock with looks that would be right at home in Manhattan. Chines earned a devoted clientele with his Copious Row outposts in Sag Harbor and Greenwich, Connecticut. To tailor the shop’s vibe for a beachier, event-conscious crowd, he enlisted interior designer Zachary Dillingham Zimmerman. Marble tables and palm-frond wallpaper set a fun yet sophisticated stage. “It’s all about creating an ambience that caters to the client and the clothing,” Chines says. “Every piece has a place to be showcased.” 28C Jobs Lane, Southampton, 631-488-4555; copiousrow.com

.

The meticulously curated apparel and accessories that have made Copious Row a destination for fashionistas have a new beachy showcase. Offerings include an inspired home line from Fornasetti (ƩƢƜƭƮƫƞƝ), a reinterpretation of Italian painter, sculptor, and engraver Piero Fornasetti’s 19th-century artwork.

ew shopportunities abound in the Hamptons every season. Some years big designer names sashay onto the scene, other seasons it’s all about getting physical with workout joints and gym gear. This year, there’s a little of this and that, but what feels newest is a handful of indie types with cool, original points of view and inventories that make trends rather than follow them. Busting out of that same-old, same-old mold comes Communitie East in Amagansett, a satellite of the beyondcool flagship in Marfa, Texas, where designer John Patrick, a pioneer of ecochic and sustainable fashion, might just wait on you. Jewelry designer Stella Flame, whose gutsy designs are inspired by the four elements, is opening in Sag Harbor. The women of Random Acts of Creativity, who consider themselves global treasure hunters, are popping up in Southampton. You’ll find more mainstream types, too. The biggest news, perhaps, is the debut of home-decorating resource One Kings Lane, opening its first brick-andmortar store in a Southampton landmark building. And what’s a summer in the Hamptons without a little celebrity spotting? Gwyneth Paltrow’s goop MRKT pops up in Amagansett. Here’s a fashionable baker’s dozen of shopping stops.

SHOP don’t drop You’ll find some serious retail therapy out East this summer

Minerals and Smashbox. Get your bling on with jewelry from Uno de 50, Alex and Ani, and Chan Lu. There’s lingerie, too (apparently a hot commodity). “There’s no lingerie anywhere in Montauk,” said a Shine staffer. “It’s kind of tough when you come out here and you forgot your underwear.” Find fun, modern handbags and mini leather backpacks by Melie Bianco ($39-$90), Free People shoes, Swarovski crystal temporary tattoos, along with a new Shine brand collection of ready-to-wear. “Montauk’s got this unique, very beachy Boho chic style with little twists of fancy,” says Flight. To that end, the Shine collection offers just-right tops, shorts and dresses for $80 or less.

Brides often spend hours finding the right shoe for their weddings — but whether they’re killer stilettoes, fur and lace booties (like these, from the recent Marchesa bridal runway) or customized sneakers, hardly anyone sees them. . . . So we decided to give your wedding slippers a little love. If you have an interesting wedding shoe, send us a photo (we’d like a close-up and a shot that shows the whole outfit) and a little info on your choice. Email exploreLI.com, with Wedding Shoes in the subject line or send to newsday.com/submit. We’ll run some faves at the end of summer. — BARBARA SCHULER

38A Jobs Lane, Southampton raclifestyle.com; Instagram: rac.lifestyle Random Acts of Creativity co-founders Noelle Pallais and Sabrina Burda, who consider themselves global treasure hunters, open their first independent pop-up in the Hamptons on June 17. The duo defines their retail gig as “a carefully curated nomadic and ever-changing storefront showcasing designers, artisans and artists from around the world.” This season’s Boho eclectic themes will include artwork, home goods, accessories, jewelry and clothes from wellknown brands such as Baublebar jewelry and Del Toro shoes and more obscure ones like Byfini, a clothing line. The mix is definitely eclectic and includes handmade stitched baskets ($40), red gingham mules ($240) and a handpainted backgammon board ($525). “It looks like a curated bazaar,” Burda says of the store.

3 Moniebogue Lane, Westhampton Beach 631-684-9007; Instagram: @shopravelwhb Store owner Colleen Nill’s inspiration for this fresh new spot was luxurious hotel shops selling “interesting, cool things that you don’t see all over.” To that end, she’s stocked her smartly appointed space (built like a custom closet) with clothing, jewelry and accessories that have “a resort flair.” Find loads of beachwear, bathing suits, cover-ups, hats and more, “a little something for everyone,” says Nill. Jewelry runs from costume for less than $100 to precious, and prices go from about $36 for a summery pouch to $550 for a bracelet with diamondstudded charms. Nill’s hope is that “people feel happy and upbeat while they shop these fun brands. . . . I want them to really feel that they are on vacation.”

150 Main St., Sag Harbor 631-919-5172; stellaflametheshop.com; Instagram: @stellaflamejewelry Gutsy, gorgeous and somewhat spiritual (without being corny) jewelry is sold at this 400-square-foot treasure chest, where jewelry designer Stella Flame (yes, her real name) holds court. The jewels, handmade in two small ateliers in Istanbul, are inspired by the four elements (earth, wind, fire and water) and combine precious metals and sparkling stones. A “man in the moon” amulet/charm in vermeil and sparkling stones sells for $170, while a 24-karat, thick gold cuff with chalcedony teardrops goes for $3,520. In addition to the earthy bling, Flame carries jewelry designer Olivier Durbano’s fragrances that he has dubbed “perfume poems,” luxurious Jane August handbags, and it has a small men’s section featuring jewelry, grooming products and lightas-air Spinoza sunglasses made in South Korea. A patio outside will host special events, such as trunk shows and book readings.
