Dear Community Partners, I am thrilled to introduce you to the third edition of "The Buzz." This newsletter is a labor of love. Working alongside my two talented student workers Lizbeth Vega-Santiago and Chrishya Edmond, we developed an informative, creative, and interactive newsletter for your enjoyment. Welcome to the Scorpion Family! Please take a moment to review our student highlights along with the various initiatives and events happening at Nevada State College. Women's History Month in the United States The month of March is dedicated to the celebration of women's contributions to history, culture and society. The now month-long celebration comes from what started off as only a weeklong event. The first time Women's History Month was ever celebrated was in 1978, in Sonoma, California. As years went on, more communities began to participate in the celebration as well and it quickly became widespread. In 1989, President Jimmy Carter officially declared that March 8th would officially mark the beginning of the week-long celebration. In his proclamation he wrote; " 'Women’s History is Women’s Right.' It is an essential and indispensable heritage from which we can draw pride, comfort, courage, and long-range vision. I ask my fellow Americans to recognize this heritage with appropriate activities during National Women’s History Week, March 2–8, 1980. I urge libraries, schools, and community organizations to focus their observances on the leaders who struggled for equality – Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Lucy Stone, Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Harriet Tubman, and Alice Paul.

Understanding the true history of our country will help us to comprehend the need for full equality under the law for all our people...." The following year, Congress declared that the celebration would be recognized nationwide and six years later, the National Women's History Project petitioned Congress to expand the celebration to the entire month of March.

Here in the United States, Women's History Month has a new theme every year. The National Women's History Alliance is in charge of designating a yearly theme. This year, the theme was. a continuation of 2020's theme; "Valient Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced." The theme was picked as a recognition of the revolution that came from the women's suffrage movement. The 19th amendment marked the victory for women all over the country.

the

women

planned,

organized, gave speeches, signed petitions and staged demonstrations. This year, we honored the bravery and work of thousands of women who came before us.

Women's History Month Around the World Women's History Day, or month, happens annually all around the world. The celebration recognizes all of the economic, political, and social achievements that women have made to the world. Different countries may celebrate the holiday in other months other than March. In Canda, Women's History Month is celebrated in October to mark the anniversary of the case that decided women were eligible to be appointed as senators. Many countries celebrate by having demonstrations, rallies, or starting educational initiatives. Depending on the country's customs, many women around the world receive awards, recognitions, flowers and gifts.

Nevada State's Second Annual Women's History Month Celebration

This year, Nevada State College hosted their second annual Women's History Month Celebration. This year ,The Office of Student, The Office of the Provost, CEDI, The Library and the Nevada State Student Alliance hosted events during the entire month of March.

The celebration started off with a "Self Care Saturday." Students, faculty and staff were able to join local fitness coach Solvie Wright for a morning yoga session.

The Nevada State Student Alliance Business Manager, Yesica PlacenciaFlores was the guest speaker for the ongoing 'Scorpion Talks' series. Yesica talked about her experiences as a first-generation student and also talked about how she copes with feelings of Imposter Syndrome.

The month ended with a drive in movie night, students came out to watch "On the Basis of Sex." A movie about the early life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Making History n e m o W Naomi Osaka is currently the highestpaid female athlete ever. She became a pro tennis player at just 15 years old.

Naomi says she feels a responsibility to use her platform to speak up for what she believes in. She says even though she is only 22, she feels a great responsibility to inspire young girls who look up to her, and she uses that as motivation to always push harder out on the tennis court.

Amanda Gorman has made history. At her young age, she has become the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history.

This year, on Jan. 20, 2021, she recited "The Hill We Climb" at President Joe Biden's inauguration. She is also the nation's first ever Youth Poet Laureate.

Hayley Arceneaux

Hayley Arceneaux, 29, has become the youngest woman ever to go to space. She is currently a physician assistant at St. Judes Children's Research Hospital. At the age of 10, she beat cancer and now she will be a part of the first allcivilian mission into outer space!

Kathrin Jansen, Ph.D. is the Senior Vice President and Head of Vaccine Research and Development at Pfizer Inc. Kathrin and two other women were instrumental in the development of the successful vaccine.

ADMINISTRATIVE FACULTY HIGHLIGHT

Erika

Social Media Specialist Erika Arballo is a first-generation Chicana and Alumna from Nevada State College. She is the current Nevada State College Social Media Specialist. Erika enjoys working as a Social Media Specialist because it gives her an opportunity to serve and accurately represent the diverse student population that we have at Nevada State. She believes representation is a crucial part of student success, especially for students of color and for first-generation students.

Erika is the current Co-Chair of the DACA and Undocumented Subcommittee and she is also a CoChair for NSHE All Accessand she is a member of the Diversity and Incusion Task Force. Erika also

recently joined the Health and Fitness Committee because she has a passion for coaching and she hopes to see a running club, cross country or track team here at Nevada State College in the near future.

Erika believes that the strength that helps her succeed the most is compassion and her family members are her main supporters.

She prides herself in sharing valuable information with out students so that they can be equipped with the resources that they need in order to be successful. In the future, she hopes to partner with the ACLU or any other policy changing leaders so that she can continue to support immigrant children and learn about better ways to serve them.

"Education is the equalizer of social equity. My hope is that each time anyone hears that we are the 2nd fastest growing college in the nation, they consider the human aspect of our student demographics. "

ADMINISTRATIVE FACULTY HIGHLIGHT

Yesica

NSSA Business Manager and Advisor Yesica Placencia-Flores is a first generation alumna from Nevada State College. She is a first generation student with a Bachelor's in Psychology and Education and she is a current grad student at UNLV. Her major is Higher Education Administration. She enjoys working as the Nevada State Student Alliance Business Manager because she loves to work with students in higher education. She hopes to make a meaningful impact in their college journey. She is a very passionate person and is always ready to help out when needed. She believes that it is imperative to be passionate about your career in order to strive to achieve your goals, and she definitely feels like she can impact students through her current position.

Yesica hopes that she can be an example to other firstgeneration students and hope to inspire them and show them that their dreams are achievable. Yesica has opened up about experiencing feelings of Imposter

Syndrome, and she hopes to teach students that feelings of uncertainty do not signify failure.

Yesica is a part of the Sting Out Stigma Committee, which aims to tackle stigmas surrounding mental health and she was also a part of the Women's History Month Commitee, without her, this year's celebration would not have been possible.

Yesica's biggest supporters are her family and her fiance.

She says she feels very privileged to have such a great support system, and that they have been one of her
