Commencement Traditions The Ceremonial Mace

The Gown

Tracing roots back to 11th-century royal protection, the mace is carried by the Faculty Senate chair to symbolize the scholarship, integrity, and respect of those who follow.

Symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, the gown covers any dress denoting rank or social standing. It is most often black, with pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s degree, oblong sleeves for the master’s degree, and round, open sleeves for the doctoral degree.

Doctoral degree gowns are also faced with colorful velvet panels corresponding with the course of study.

Academic Regalia: Cap, Gown, and Hood Academic regalia (American academic dress) is also a relic of the Middle Ages when scholars wore wool or fur hooded cloaks to stay warm in the drafty, unheated stone buildings where they studied.

The Cap The academic cap is a symbol of the freedom of scholarship as well as the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. The color of the tassel on the cap denotes the discipline.

The Hood The hood is the most distinctive feature of American academic dress, which, through color and design, may indicate the wearer’s degree and institution at which the degree was earned. Hoods are lined with the colors of the institution and trimmed to correspond with the degree discipline. The length of the hood varies by academic degree.

Graduation With Honors Latin honors are awarded to students who have earned at least half of the credits (letter graded) required for their degree program at Nevada State College and achieved one of the following GPAs:

Public Administration (Peacock Blue)

Sciences (Golden Yellow)

Magna Cum Laude (Silver) 3.70 to 3.89

Speech & Language Pathology (Silver)

Color Guard A military or civil service color guard displays and escorts the national flag on ceremonial occasions and at official state functions. Color teams evolved from the custom of carrying the colors onto the battlefield during the 18th and 19th centuries to identify the location of combatants and to inspire pride and confidence in them. Nevada State College honors this tradition to empower new graduates to succeed in their future campaigns.

2019 National Anthem Performer Sharon Calove Sharon Calove, better known by her stage name Sharon Tanyag, is a singer and songwriter. She won last year’s Nevada State’s Got Talent competition and is majoring in nursing with a minor in deaf studies. Calove sang the national anthem at Staples Center for the Los Angeles Lakers for the third time in January and is scheduled to sing it for the Las Vegas Aviators this year and the Raiders in 2020.

The Regents’ Scholar Award is bestowed upon one undergraduate from each institution within the Nevada System of Higher Education to recognize academic achievements, leadership ability, and service contributions.

The President’s Medals are honors conferred to individuals who have proven extraordinary commitment to the mission of Nevada State College.

Keely Biggs

Keely Biggs is a Hispanic, first-generation college student born and raised in Las Vegas.

She began her educational journey nearly 12 years ago and will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in biology today. As a capstone to this journey, Biggs will begin a paid graduate program in biology at the University of Nevada, Reno. During her time at Nevada State College, she had to work up to four jobs at times to pay her bills and tuition, but these competing interests did not stop her. Instead, Biggs worked on several research projects in Nevada, Costa Rica, and Mexico to develop her skills as a scientist while becoming a leader within the Nevada State College community. Biggs also serves as a course assistant for Principles of Modern Biology II and participated in a Nevada State College mission trip to Oaxaca, Mexico, to create a science center and provide a medical clinic to the remote village of Eloxochitlan.

Peter Guzman Peter Guzman is an accomplished smallbusiness owner, real estate investor, and developer. He is currently the president of the Latin Chamber of Commerce (LCC), the most powerful Hispanic chamber in Nevada, with more than 40 years of community work and business representation. As president of The Opa Group LLC, Guzman advises and helps transition many publicly traded companies, as well as privately held companies, in all facets of business. He also has been recognized by numerous elected officials for his ideas on affordable housing and creative ways to increase minority home ownership and business entrepreneurship. He believes strongly in youth mentoring and has funded scholarships to inspire young people to follow their passion. Guzman is an invaluable member of the Nevada State College community. He has served on the President’s Advisory Council for many years. As the president of the LCC, he has continued to grow the partnership in many ways, including the annually sold-out LCC Luncheon at the college.

Bob and Alison Kasner are long-standing Henderson residents. Bob moved to Las Vegas after completing his undergraduate degree in accounting from Ithaca College.

He furthered his education at UNLV, earning his MBA. He holds CPA and CFP licenses. His career included finance director for the City of Henderson, during which he received Boss of the Year by the American Business Women’s Association. In 1996, he co-founded Paragon Asset Management Company. Bob was named the Henderson Chamber Member of the Year in 2007.

Alison is a graduate of UNLV, with a Bachelor of Science in special education, Master of Science in rehabilitation counseling, and licenses in teaching, school and vocational counseling, and educational leadership. As a freshman at Valley High School, Alison went on a field trip to Helen J. Stewart, a Clark County School District special education school, and her passion for educating students with disabilities began. She taught at various schools, served as a district-level special education administrator, and concluded her career as the principal at Helen J. Stewart.

Separately, Bob and Alison have served on many local boards.

In 2012, they created the Kasner Family Foundation and continually give back to education and health-related community causes. Bob was part of the original discussion about creating Nevada State College and served on the President’s Advisory Council. Alison served on the Nevada State College Foundation board. Both Bob and Alison share a passion to help Nevada State College students and improve education.

Jerrie E. Merritt Jerrie E. Merritt serves as senior vice president and community development manager for Bank of Nevada. Merritt’s responsibilities include coordination of all community development programs, and she acts as a liaison with state and local agencies, nonprofit development groups, and other participants in community and economic development programs and projects. She currently lends her experience and expertise to Help of Southern Nevada as the chair of the board of directors, past chair for the Urban Chamber of Commerce, president of the Hannah Brown Community Development Corporation, and member of The Links Inc., Coalition of 100 Black Women, Valley Hospital Medical Center Advisory Board, UNLV Library Advisory Board, American Business Women Association, and Workforce Connections Board. Merritt attended the University of Alaska, majoring in banking and finance. She was awarded the Women of Distinction Award by the National Association of Women Business Owners and was featured as an Interesting Personality in the Inaugural Edition of Who’s Who In Black Las Vegas™, was chosen as a Woman to Watch in 2016

by Vegas Inc., was named a Top 100 Women of Influence 2017, and received the Silver State Award for Female Executive of the Year. Merritt has a long history of helping students. In 2016, she nominated Nevada State College to receive the Excellence in Education award at the Urban Chamber Green Tie Gala.

Merritt is also a member of the Nevada State College President’s Advisory Council.

Bob and Alison Kasner

2019 Keynote Speaker Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly Commissioner Lawrence Weekly was the first African American to chair the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. He sits as chairman of the board of trustees for University Medical Center Southern Nevada, the Clark County Liquor and Gaming Licensing Board and the Local Law Enforcement Advisory Board, which awards nearly $1 million to valley-wide programs every year dedicated to improving the quality of life for families in Clark County.

Commissioner Weekly was appointed to the County Commission in 2007 by former Gov. Jim Gibbons and was reelected to three additional terms. On Jan. 7, 2019, he was selected by his peers to serve as County Commission vice chairman. Prior to becoming a commissioner, Weekly served seven years as the Las Vegas city councilman for Ward 5.

Commissioner Weekly is a native Nevadan and graduate of Western High School. He attended Grambling State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in communication. He holds a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and teaches public policy at UNLV and Nevada State College.

Commissioner Weekly is a strong advocate for foster care, education, and business development. He hosts numerous events annually for children in the Clark County foster care system. He also is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., is a founder of the Las Vegas Kappa Leadership League for aspiring young black men in high school, and is a founder of Camp Brotherhood which affords inner-city youth an opportunity to attend camp at Mount Charleston at the close of each academic year.

Weekly and his wife, Kim, have two children, Malik and Kenya.

2019 Student Speaker The commencement student speaker is selected annually from a group of candidates who hold a minimum 3.0 GPA and have completed their degree requirements in the previous summer or fall semester, or in the current spring semester.

Gladys Rastegari Gladys Rastegari is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in biology.

She spent her time in college volunteering at homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and hospitals in addition to working alongside emergency physicians, general surgeons, and internists while earning her degree. Rastegari plans to move on to a professional school after graduation to become a sports medicine physician.

Alejandra Linares-Sierra is a conscientious, responsible, and hardworking student. Her ability to maintain exceptional grades tells only part of the story. She believes in people.

During her studies to become a special educator, Linares-Sierra not only served as an advocate for students with disabilities, but she designed an assistive technology tool to be used in a classroom setting. One of her future goals includes pursuing a graduate degree. Her spirit and energy are evidence of her passion and desire to move mountains personally and professionally.

Minty Potter epitomizes the Nevada State College mission and spirit. With an almost perfect GPA, Potter is an exceptionally strong and outstanding student. She returned to her education as a widowed mother of young children, mentioning in her application essay that she believed she held the skills of understanding, patience, and compassion. Potter demonstrates herself as the very definition of each of these, working with peers, families, and children throughout her coursework, clinical, and practicum experiences.

Caitlin Hippler has balanced competing life priorities while at Nevada State, managing a busy full-time job and taking care of her two children while forming a Nevada State Student Alliance club for nontraditional students to connect and support one another.

A member of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society, she also studies Spanish, Mandarin, and American Sign Language, and she presented her historical research at two regional conferences. Hippler participated in the Nevada EPSCoR Grant and the DODEA Teacher Leadership Summit and graduates with honors today.

Bailey Evans' academic talent, work ethic, and kindness have helped her flourish at Nevada State.

While earning a mathematics degree with a minor in business, she has maintained a 3.6 GPA and been a valued employee of the Academic Advising Center. Evans has a passion for applying her knowledge to the real world: She did a research project using mathematics to explore popular music trends, and she prepared tax returns in her accounting special topics class. She looks forward to a bright future using her quantitative skills in business, finance, or data analytics.

Lynette Melvin is one of Henderson’s best and brightest, raised here, and a product of the Clark County School District. After taking time off following high school, she studied criminal justice at the College of Southern Nevada, graduating with honors in 2017 to pursue a career helping child victims of human trafficking. She transferred to Nevada State, maintaining above a 3.75 GPA as a working student. Melvin enjoys helping others, and worked with the Academic Success Center to mentor her peers in statistics.

Bobbie Nemetz graduates today exhibiting all the qualities we expect in a successful student and compassionate nurse, but also those of a dedicated leader.

She simultaneously served as the Nevada State College Student Nurses Association (SNA) vice president and Nevada Student Nurses Association president, where she led statewide initiatives. She worked tirelessly to dramatically increase student participation in the SNA, has attended multiple state and national conferences, and led many local community events.
