Eduardo Mabilog

2020 Recipient

As a first-generation senior English major born to immigrant parents, Eduardo Mabilog has strived to find new strategies and approaches to teaching writing. A campus leader, he contributed to the campus’s inclusivity by coordinating workshops on anti-racism and interdepartmental events to foster student engagement. His efforts in writing studies have been recognized with two prestigious awards. His future plans include the pursuit of a doctorate in rhetoric and composition, researching the manners in which minoritized students continue to face exclusion and barriers, which limit the potential to see their identities aligned with their education.

Tanya Smith

2021 Recipient

In 2017, Tanya Smith began pursuing her bachelor’s degree in psychology and, shortly thereafter, became a course assistant (CA) to help others be successful in reaching their higher education goals. Most recently, she served as a peer mentor, providing training and guidance to other CAs. These positions allowed her to facilitate learning by role modeling successful student behaviors, including leading weekly study sessions. She is committed to using research as a tool to advocate for marginalized communities and plans to continue her studies, pursuing a doctorate in social psychology focusing on the intersection of multiple minority identities, e.g., Black and woman, and ultimately becoming a researcher and professor.
