Commencement Traditions Tracing roots back to 11th-century royal protection, the mace is carried by the Faculty Senate chair to symbolize the scholarship, integrity, and respect of those who follow.

Academic Regalia: Cap, Gown, and Hood

Academic regalia (American academic dress) is also a relic of the Middle Ages when scholars wore wool or fur hooded cloaks to stay warm in the drafty, unheated stone buildings where they studied.

The Cap

The academic cap is a symbol of the freedom of scholarship as well as the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. A long tassel is fastened to the middle point of the top of the cap only and is moved from right to left upon graduation. The color of the tassel on the cap denotes the school colors of black and gold.

The Gown

Symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, the gown covers any dress denoting rank or social standing. It is most often black, with pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s degree; oblong sleeves for the master’s degree; and round, open sleeves for the doctoral degree. Doctoral degree gowns are also faced with colorful velvet panels corresponding with the course of study.

The Hood

The hood is the most distinctive feature of American academic dress, which, through color and design, may indicate the wearer’s degree and institution at which the degree was earned. Hoods are lined with the colors of the institution and trimmed to correspond with the degree discipline. The length of the hood varies by academic degree.

Graduation With Honors

Latin honors are awarded to students who have achieved one of the following GPAs: Cum Laude (Bronze) 3.50 to 3.69 Magna Cum Laude (Silver) 3.70 to 3.89

commencement2021

The Ceremonial Mace

Summa Cum Laude (Gold) 3.90 to 4.00 5

Color Guard A military or civil service color guard displays and escorts the national flag on ceremonial occasions and at official state functions. Color teams evolved from the custom of carrying the colors onto the battlefield during the 18th and 19th centuries to identify the location of combatants and to inspire pride and confidence in them. Nevada State College honors this tradition to empower new graduates to succeed in their future campaigns.

National Anthem Performers

commencement2021

Trixia Peña Dela Rosa

6

Trixia Peña Dela Rosa, known as “Trixie” to friends and family, is a nursing student with a passion for musical theater. She recently played the role of Bun Foo in “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and is graduating with a degree in nursing with a minor in psychology. Trixia sang the national anthem at the Orleans Arena for her high school graduation ceremony in 2015 and is honored to be performing the anthem once again on the same stage.

Janesis Ethina Plascencia Janesis Ethina Plascencia is a wife, a mother of two, a student, and a woman with a career. After making the decision to return to college in 2018, she is now graduating with a bachelor’s degree in deaf studies and minors in interpreting and sociology. She thanks her family for their love and support while she worked full time and completed her degree.

commencement2021

The Regents’ Scholar Award is bestowed upon one undergraduate from each institution within the Nevada System of Higher Education to recognize academic achievements, leadership ability, and service contributions.

8

Eduardo Mabilog

Tanya Smith

2020 Recipient

2021 Recipient

As a first-generation senior English major born to immigrant parents, Eduardo Mabilog has strived to find new strategies and approaches to teaching writing. A campus leader, he contributed to the campus’s inclusivity by coordinating workshops on anti-racism and interdepartmental events to foster student engagement. His efforts in writing studies have been recognized with two prestigious awards. His future plans include the pursuit of a doctorate in rhetoric and composition, researching the manners in which minoritized students continue to face exclusion and barriers, which limit the potential to see their identities aligned with their education.

In 2017, Tanya Smith began pursuing her bachelor’s degree in psychology and, shortly thereafter, became a course assistant (CA) to help others be successful in reaching their higher education goals. Most recently, she served as a peer mentor, providing training and guidance to other CAs. These positions allowed her to facilitate learning by role modeling successful student behaviors, including leading weekly study sessions. She is committed to using research as a tool to advocate for marginalized communities and plans to continue her studies, pursuing a doctorate in social psychology focusing on the intersection of multiple minority identities, e.g., Black and woman, and ultimately becoming a researcher and professor.

Distinguished Nevadan Award The Distinguished Nevadan award recognizes prominent individuals who have made significant contributions to the cultural, economic, scientific, or social advancement of Nevada and its people.

In January 1945, six-year-old Hannah Brown and her mother relocated to Las Vegas. She became a reservations sales agent for Western Airlines in 1968, where she broke new ground for on-the-job cultural diversity, before eventually returning to Las Vegas in 1994. Brown was elected president of the Urban Chamber of Commerce (UCC) in 1999, a position she successfully held for eight years. With her guidance, the Asian, Latin, and Urban Chambers began hosting combined luncheons, setting attendance records. In September 2007, the UCC Board of Directors named Brown president emerita in recognition of her 10 years of service, and in 2009, she was honored with the creation of a 501(c)(3) named the Hannah Brown Community Development Corporation. She worked with the Las Vegas Centennial Commission in 2010 to garner a $4 million grant to refurbish the Historic Westside School. In October 2020, CCSD’s School Naming Committee voted to name an elementary school in her honor. The Hannah Marie Brown Elementary School will open in August 2021. Brown has been the recipient of many prestigious honors and awards for her tireless work.

President’s Medals The President’s Medals are honors conferred to individuals who have proven extraordinary commitment to the mission of Nevada State College.

commencement2021

Elaine Hodgson

10

In addition to co-founding Incredible Technologies (IT) in 1985, Elaine Hodgson has served as president and chief executive officer. A veteran of the entertainment and technical development world, she has led IT from a $150,000 basement startup to becoming a dominant player in both the amusement and gaming industries. She actively oversees all aspects of the company, including game development, strategic business planning, intellectual properties, and the innovative marketing and sales of IT’s products. Her leadership and development of global brands such as Golden Tee® Golf and Crazy Money® have earned her a variety of awards and honors, leading to her 2019 induction into the American Gaming Association’s Hall of Fame. Hodgson received her Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from Purdue University and began her career as an industrial chemist at the Kennedy Space Center, where she worked on the Space Shuttle program. She is most proud of her three children and two grandchildren.

In addition to his 34 years of work in the institutional investment management business, Kevin J. Page has been an ardent supporter of higher education in Nevada through his long-term leadership. Intent on helping Nevada State College achieve its mission, he has provided critical support to the college through his ongoing efforts. Previously, he served on the NSHE Board of Regents (2009-2020), completing four terms as chairman and two terms as vice chairman. Page received the UNLV Outstanding Alumnus Award as well as the Distinguished Nevadan Award and also served on the UNLV Alumni Board of Directors (1989-2003). He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration as well as an MBA from UNLV. He is a past board member of the Police and Fire Emerald Society of Nevada. Page and his wife, Patty, reside in Henderson, Nevada and are the proud parents of three daughters.

Astrid Silva ’17 After immigrating from Mexico, the Silva family arrived in Nevada when Astrid was just five years old. She graduated from the Advanced Technologies Academy (2006) and later received three Associate degrees before beginning her Nevada State College journey. As an undocumented person, Silva was often in the shadows. However, a 2009 encounter with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid changed her life, and she became involved with the DREAM Act, representing people in similar situations throughout Nevada. In 2012, with like-minded individuals, she was able to form DREAM Big Vegas, aimed at educating the community about issues facing DREAMers and their families. The club quickly achieved national acclaim for its work, and Silva began receiving honors as well. Now the executive director of Dream Big Nevada, an organization inspired by DREAM Big Vegas, she continues to raise her voice and empower others so that together they can achieve their goal – keeping families, like hers, together.

She has a goal of offering bilingual library programming to get young children excited about reading.

During her first year at Nevada State College, Natalie Torres Patarroyo was adjusting to living in a new country and learning English in an academic setting.
