Come Ready to Eat. Please consider joining this event with a traditional African dish. This Senegalese salad is from the beautiful country of Senegal in West Africa. Senegal is known for its semiarid grasslands, oceanfront, and tropical forests. It is also known as the "Gateway to Africa."

Incredients: 1 cup dry black eyed peas 5 stalks green onions handful of parsley 1/2 English cucumber (chopped) 1 red bell pepper (seeded and diced) 1 cup cherry tomatoes (chopped into quarters) 1 jalapeno pepper (seeded and diced) 1 lime (juiced) 1 tsp black pepper 1 tsp kosher salt 1/4 cup olive oil

Saladu Nebbe a black-eyed peas salad from Senegal. This fresh salad is fresh, healthy and yummyt

Instructions: 1. Soak the black-eyed peas in water overnight or for at least 8 hours. Strain the water from the beans and wash the beans under cold running water.

2. Pour the beans into a pot. Add 7 cups of water and 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt to the beans .

3. Put the pot on the stove, cover the pot and bring the beans to al boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat and let the beans simmer for 1 hour or until the beans are tender.

4. Mix together the olive oil, lime juice, black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt in a small bowl to make a salad dressing.

5. In a salad bowl, add and mix together all the remaining ingredients 6. Drain the water from the cooked beans and then add the beans to the salad.

Pour the dressing onto the salad and mix everything together.

7. Place the salad in the fridge and let marinade for at least 1 hour until serving.

Notes: You can also use canned black-eyed peas instead of the dried ones if you want a quicker way to make this salad. Just strain the liquid from the canned beans and add the beans to the salad.

Saladu nebbe can be served cold or at room temperature.

Choir Director Megan Franke The Las Vegas Academy of the Arts Choir (LVA) is located with the LVA Vocal department, which encompasses awardwinning programs. Kimberly Tureaud & Anna Bailey 12:25-12:50pm

Kimberly Tureaud, along with her husband Charles Tureaud, are co-publishers and founders of Las Vegas Black Image magazine. The magazine made its debut in February 2009 and has a broad image of Black life and entertainment. lasvegasblackimage.com Mother to Kimberly Tureaud, Ms. Anna Bailey is a former dancer and businesswoman. In 1955, Anna and her husband Bob Bailey, a singer and emcee, moved to Las Vegas to open the Moulin Rouge Hotel and Casino. Anna performed at the Moulin Rouge until its closing just six months after opening.

Kimberly and Anna will share their lived experience as Nevada residents. They will also discuss the historical and current-day influence of Blacks in Nevada. Both speakers will close with inspirational words for our students.

Avree Walker 12:50-1:00pm

Avree Walker is a dance instructor for the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts and an alumnus of the school. He attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' fine arts program, where he later had the opportunity to perform for the International Association of Blacks in Dance (IBD) and apprenticed with the Contemporary Dance Theater. Avree inspires youth to express themselves through the artistry of dance.

Avree will discuss the history and continued struggle for Black representation in dance. We will also hear from some of the youth he instructs and mentors and view a pre-recorded performance.

Claytee White 1:00-1:45pm

Claytee D. White, Director of the Oral History Research Center for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries, collects Las Vegas oral histories by gathering memories and events, and experiences from longtime ago. Claytee serves as a founding member of the Las Vegas Black Historical Society. She also is a member of the Board of Women of Diversity and the Historic Preservation Commission.

Claytee will host a session titled, In Their Own Words: The Oral History of Blacks in Nevada You can sign up for this session upon registration.

Dr. Brandon Manning 1:00-1:45pm

Dr. Brandon Manning is an Assistant Professor at Texas Christian University in the AddRan College of Liberal Arts. His areas of research include: African American (Black) Literature and Culture, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Popular Culture Studies, and Satire and Humor Studies.

Kimberly Florence, Ph.D. Kimberly Florence serves as the Community Resources Coordinator in the Office of Community Engagement and Diversity Initiatives. She has a doctorate in Higher Education with an emphasis on student affairs.

Ramiro Bautista, Ph.D. Ramiro Bautista is currently the interim program coordinator in the office of community engagement and diversity initiatives at Nevada State. Ramiro has over 10 years of higher education experience as an enrollment management professional.

Ramiro is a recent graduate with a PhD in educational leadership with a concentration in higher education administration from the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU). Ramiro earned his Master of Business Administration in 2009 from PVAMU, where he also completed his Bachelor of Business Administration in 2007. Ramiro is a Tejano and first-generation PVAMU Panther.

Dr. Jody Lykes & Dr. Chris Harris 2:00-2:45pm

Dr. Jody Lykes is a Hip Hip Scholar and Coordinator of the African Diaspora Program at the University of Nevada, Reno. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Nevada, Reno, in Education, Diversity, and Equity. Dr. Lykes dedicates himself to social justice and improving the academic and social experiences of all students.

Dr. Chris Harris is a Communications professor at Nevada State (NSC) and an active member of the campus community. He has contributed to numerous strategic planning committees and has represented the school with statewide initiatives on diversity, ethnicity, and inclusion. His research interest includes fine-de-siècle rap music and neo-soul, critical pedagogy, media portrayals of ethnicity and race, and the interplay between power and discourse in contemporary society.

Dr. Lykes and Dr. Harris will host a session titled, The Urban Poet: a Conversation on the Black Experience Through Hip Hop Culture You can sign up for this session upon registration.

Vogue Robinson 2:00-2:45pm & 2:46-2:55pm Vogue Robinson is an author, poet, and teacher. Her first full-length Publication, "Vogue 3:16," was released in 2014. She was Clark County Nevada's second poet laureate in 2017 and is known to create narrative work and conversation. The granddaughter of a teacher, Vogue leads workshops and teachers art across the valley for both schools and non-profits.

Ashley Hairston Doughty 2:00-2:45pm

Ashley Hairston Doughty is a visual storyteller. She tells personal stories and experiences through verbal and visual language. Much of her practice deals with socio-economic, racial, and gender-based issues, particularly those relating to cultural misconceptions and the development of personal identity.

Tulips Program & Kasina Douglass-Boone 3:00-3:08pm

TULIPS stands for Teaching and Uniting Ladies to Inspire Positive Success. The nonprofit organization dedicates to cultivating mentored relationships between elite professional women and aspiring female youth leaders, ages 13-21. Through mentoring relationships, they also help young ladies nurture rich lived experiences while furthering their educational aspirations. mytulips.org Ms. Kasina Douglass-Boone will share a brief description of the Tulips program as well as testimonials from some of the young women in the program.

Punam Mathur Keynote Speaker

3:10-3:30pm Punam Mathur is an entrepreneur, trainer, and writer. She also serves as the Executive Director of the Elaine P. Wynn Foundation. From 20092012, she was an officer of NV Enegy, Inc. She joined NV Energy following 13 years in the gaming industry, most recently serving as an officer and senior vice president, corporate doversity and community affairs, for MGM Mirage, now MGM Resorts Int'l.
