Chief Bowls Perfect Game, Sets House Record By MC1 Daniel Barker NSA Public Affairs

A member of the Naval Support Activity Naples Base Team bowled a perfect game with a score of 300 on February 22. Chief Logistics Specialist Jeffrey Logue, bowling with the NSA Naples Base Team in the OCONUS Section of the worldwide Navy Bowling Base Team, Championship Bowling League, bowled 12 strikes in a row, giving him a perfect score of 300. “I started bowling when I was four and a half, just pushing the ball down the lane,” Logue said. “It’s pretty much been a family thing. My uncle owned a few bowling alleys in the Northwest, my grandfather bowled quite a bit, my father bowled a lot, and it just became sort of a family hobby. As I’ve developed over the years, as with anything you have to build a couple different games so if I have to hook the ball a lot in order to score I will, and if it requires throwing as straight as possible to score then that’s what I’ll do. It worked

President Obama Presents Medal of Honor to Navy SEAL for Rescuing Taliban Hostage By April Grant Navy Office of Information

On February 29, Senior Chief Special Warfare Operator (SEAL) Edward C. Byers Jr. became the sixth Navy SEAL in U.S. history to receive the Medal of Honor. President Barack Obama presented Byers with the medal during a White House ceremony for his heroic gallantry as an assault team member attached to a Joint Task Force in support of Operation Enduring Freedom December 8, 2012. During the ceremony, Obama praised Byers’ dedication to duty. “Like so many of our special operators, Ed is defined by a deep sense of humility. He doesn’t seek the spotlight. In fact, he shuns it. He’s the consummate quiet professional,” Obama said. The president welcomed members of Byers’ family, including wife Madison, daughter Hannah, and mother Peggy. The crowd laughed as Obama recounted Peggy’s question upon hearing the news of her son’s award, “Do you think I can come?” Obama called Byers “a special breed of warrior,” part of a select few who serve the American people in the shadows with honor and sacrifice. CAPTAIN’S CORNER By Capt. Doug Carpenter NSA Naples Commanding Officer

You’ve heard of the term “Ship Shape;” the U.S Navy has always held organization and cleanliness as a top priority. Clean functioning equipment, spaces, and personnel demonstrate high morale, increase safety, and translate to higher mission effectiveness. Onboard NSA Naples the situation is no different. How can you possibly enjoy a café or a concert on base if your view is cluttered by litter or unsightly garbage? Doing our best to keep NSA Naples clean and organized serves more than just aesthetic purposes, it shows respect towards your fellow community members, it allows us to live and work in a place that we can be proud to show off to family and friends, and it visibly demonstrates our commitment to the environment. I am proud to say that I have personally noticed a reduction in loose cups, plastic bags, and stray pieces of garbage over the past year. But there are still a few areas that could use some help. We still leave a lot of water bottles, juice boxes and snack wrappers on the athletic fields and playgrounds. Please have the conversation with your family to get everyone involved in keeping a clean base. Finally, if you come across a stray piece of litter as you walk from one part of the base to another, please pick it up and put it in the nearest trash can. Every little bit helps, and not just to our common areas, but also in the work place. The beginning of March means the beginning of Red Cross month. The month of celebration began under President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1943 recognizing how the American Red Cross helps people across the country and around the globe. We have intimate knowledge of the organization in the military as it is our main source of emergency messages to and from family members no matter your duty location. The Red Cross uses this month to recognize our nation’s everyday heroes including those who help disaster victims get on the road to recovery, give blood to help hospital patients, brighten the day of injured service members in a hospital far from home, or take lifesaving classes and step forward to assist someone in need. Take some time this month to consider the great work the Red Cross has done for you and the people you know Please mark your calendars for the quarterly town hall on March 8th at the Support Site movie theater. The presentation will begin at 6 p.m., and there will be plenty of time to answer questions from the community. Have a great weekend and drive safe!

ITALIAN NEWS BRIEFS ing the Archaeological Museum of Naples one of the most important Egyptian collections in Italy.

COMPILED BY TERESA MEROLA NSA NAPLES PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Italian Scientists Discover Evidence of Volcanic Activity in Gulf of Naples Evidence of an active seabed doming and gas discharge has been found in the Gulf of Naples by Italian scientists. The doming, located about five kilometers from the port of Naples, is caused by the rise of gases from a depth of 10-20 kilometers, and they are similar to those that feed the hydrothermal systems of Ischia, Phlegraean Fields and Somma-Vesuvius. The discovery is the result of an oceanography survey conducted by members of Italy’s National Research Institute (CNR), the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and the University of Florence. Scientists surveyed 35 gas emissions and more than 650 small craters linked to gas discharge over the past 12,000 years. The data is evidence of “activity linked to a secondary volcanic phenomenon that is not currently associated to a direct rise of magma,” Guido Ventura of INGV said. Pompeii to Open Five Additional Sites Mid-March The ancient Roman city of Pompeii will open five additional sites to visitors. Also starting March 16 the exhibition “Myth and Nature” will open at the Archaeological Museum in Naples. The new sites include the large house of Julia Felix, a Pompeian lady who opened a luxurious ancient Spa in her home, the little House of the Orchard with its colorful frescoes, the gardens of the House of Venus in the Shell, the house of Marcus Lucretius, and the house of Ottavio Quartione. Visitors will be able to follow new routes around the site and see some human casts that will be on show for the first time. Also the exhibition “Egypt Pompeii,” including Egyptian art and statues, is opening at Pompeii on April 16. Then, the exhibit will open at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples on June 28 with more than 1,200 objects mak-

Free Admissions to State, National Museums for Women’s Day The Italian Ministry of Culture Heritage has provided free admission for women in all State museums in Naples on Women’s Day, March 8. The initiative involves all national museums throughout Italy as well as monuments and archeological sites. Guided tours, events and other initiatives will take place in many national state buildings to give more importance to the International Women’s Day. U.S. Non-Profit Group Funds Cleaning of Michelangelo’s David A U.S. non-profit group financed the cleaning of the world-famous statue of Michelangelo’s David in Florence. They spent nearly 500,000 euro ($544,000) to preserve the Renaissance masterpiece. A team of experts spent 24 hours dusting off the five-meter (16 foot) statue at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence. This process takes place every two months. The statue was moved from the Piazza della Signoria in Florence in 1873 into the museum to protect it against pollution and other factors, and later was replaced at the original location by a replica. Starbucks Coming to Italy Starbucks, the world’s biggest coffee chain will open in Milan its first store in early 2017 in partnership with Percassi Group, a prestigious Italian brand operating firm. Starbuck was started when Howard Schultz went to a business trip to Milan and Verona in the 1980s and decided to bring espresso drinks to the U.S. Italy has the seventh highest per capita coffee consumption in Europe with local shops competing to sell espresso and cappuccinos. It is a challenge for the company to open in Italy and the company has plans to open more stores across the country.

If you use air conditioning, a ceiling fan will allow you to raise the thermostat setting about four degrees Fahrenheit with no reduction in comfort. In temperate climates, or during moderately hot weather, ceiling fans may allow you to avoid using your air conditioner altogether. Install a fan in each room that needs to be cooled during hot weather. Turn off ceiling fans when you leave a room; fans cool people, not rooms, by creating a wind chill effect. Ceiling fans are only appropriate in rooms with ceilings at least eight feet high. Fans work best when the blades are seven to nine feet above the floor and 10 to 12 inches below the ceiling. Fans should be installed so their blades are no closer than eight inches from the ceiling and 18 inches from the walls. Larger ceiling fans can move more air than smaller fans. A 36- or 44-inch diameter fan will cool rooms up to 225 square feet, while fans that are 52 inches or more should be used in larger rooms. Multiple fans work best in rooms longer than 18 feet. Small- and medium-sized fans will provide efficient cooling in a 4- to 6-foot diameter area, while larger fans are effective up to 10 feet. A larger blade will also provide comparable cooling at a lower velocity than a smaller blade. This may be important in areas where loose papers or other objects will be disturbed by a strong breeze. The fan should also be fitted to the aesthetics of the room—a large fan may appear overpowering in a small room. A more expensive fan that operates quietly and smoothly will probably offer more trouble-free service than cheaper units. Check the noise ratings, and, if possible, listen to your fan in operation before you buy it. When buying ceiling fans, look for the ENERGY STAR® label. Fans that earn the label move air 20 percent more efficiently, on average, than standard models.

BOWLING from page 1 “As with anything, it takes practice,” Logue said. “I loved it as a child; it’s a fairly cheap sport to get into. Technically you don’t even have to have your own ball and shoes. If you do want to improve, eventually you would want your own equipment. I only brought two bowling balls over here with me; I’ve probably owned a couple hundred bowling balls in my lifetime.” According to Morale, Welfare and Recreation, the mission of bowling alleys on military bases are to support military, dependents, retirees and Department of Defense personnel by offering a comfortable atmosphere for fun. “I’ve been lucky enough that anywhere I’ve been stationed they had a bowling facility there on base, including Pearl Harbor, Puget Sound and here,” Logue said. “As far as the facilities and what’s available I think the bowling alley here is

fantastic. I think it’s a great place to bring your family. I was also told this is the place for breakfast.” Located at the Gricignano Support Site, across from the food court and post office, Strikers bowling alley features 16 lanes, a kids’ party room, pizza and a grill, and a free Internet Wi-Fi zone.

“There’s a great facility here and I don’t feel it’s used as often as it could be. If you’re looking for something to do the bowling alley is a great place to be and it’s not very expensive. From a health perspective bowling three games will definitely get your heart rate up” Logue added.

MEDAL OF HONOR from page 1 “Our special operations forces are a strategic national asset. They teach us that humans are more important than hardware,” Obama said. “Today is a reminder that our nation has to keep investing in this irreplaceable asset; deploying our special operators wisely, preserving force and family, making sure these incredible Americans stay strong in body, mind and spirit. The American people may not always see them. We may not always hear of their success. But they’re there-in the thick of the fight, in the dark of the night, achieving the mission. And we thank God they’re there,” added Obama. Byers spoke at a press conference following the ceremony. “The important thing I want to say here is that everything we do is as a team; if it wasn’t for that team I wouldn’t be standing here today. Specifically for me, my teammate, friend and brother Nick Checque,” he said, referring to fallen team member Petty Officer 1st Class Nicolas Checque. “The award is truly his. He was an American hero and he was the hero of that operation. Today has been a very memorable day in my life surrounded by friends and family and it is truly something I’ll never forget. We’re

gonna celebrate Nick’s life and celebrate the lives of the brothers that have fallen protecting our freedoms so that we can sleep peacefully in our beds at night,” Byers added. In December 2012, Byers, along with other members of his team, was tasked with a mission to rescue Dr. Dilip Joseph, an American citizen being detained by the Taliban in a mountainous region in the Qarghah’i District of Laghman Province. Byers was the second assaulter on the approach toward the building identified as containing the hostage. While Byers tried to rip down blankets that served as the door to the building, the first assaulter pushed his way through the doorway and was immediately shot by enemy AK47 fire. Byers, fully aware of the hostile threat inside the room, boldly entered and immediately engaged a guard pointing an AK47 towards him. As he was engaging that guard, another adult male darted towards the corner of the room. Byers could not distinguish if the person may have been the hostage scrambling away or a guard attempting to arm himself with an AK-47 that lay in the corner, so he tackled the unknown male and seized control of him. While in

hand-to-hand combat, Byers maintained control of the unknown male with one hand, while adjusting the focus of his night vision goggles (NVGs) with his other. Once his NVGs were focused, he recognized that the male was not the hostage and engaged the struggling armed guard. By now, other team members had entered the room and were calling to Joseph to identify himself. Byers heard an unknown voice speak English from his right side. He immediately leaped across the room and selflessly flung his body on top of the American hostage, shielding him from the continued rounds being fired across the room. Almost simultaneously, Byers identified an additional enemy fighter directly behind Joseph. While covering the hostage with his body, Byers was able to pin the enemy combatant to the wall with his hand around the enemy’s throat. Unable to fire any effective rounds into the enemy, Byers was able to restrain the combatant enough to enable his teammate to fire precision shots, eliminating the final threat within the room. Byers quickly talked to Joseph and, after confirming that he was able to move, extracted him to the helicopter-landing zone. Byers, a certified paramedic and 18D medic, subsequently assisted with the rendering of medical aid to the first assaulter. Byers and others performed CPR during the flight to Bagram Airfield where his teammate was declared deceased. In a U.S. Navy video, Byers recalled the moment the president called to say he would receive the Medal of Honor. “I felt very honored and very humbled because now I’m gonna be a representative for the Navy and the Navy Special Warfare community and there’s a weight that that carries with it,” he said. “And that weight is the sacrifice that

everybody has made within this community ... it’s an affirmation of the job that we do and an appreciation for the job that we do.” The Medal of Honor is the nation’s highest award given to members of the Armed Forces for gallantry in action. Byers is the first living active duty member of the U.S. Navy to receive the Medal of Honor since April 6, 1976. He is the first living active duty enlisted member of the U.S. Navy to receive the Medal of Honor since Petty Officer Michael Thornton (also a SEAL) was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Richard Nixon Oct., 15 1973. A husband and father to one daughter, Byers was born in Toledo, Ohio, and began his naval career in 1998 as a hospital corpsman. The following year, he was assigned to Great Lakes Naval Hospital and later served with 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines, in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. While

on deployment with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard USS Austin (LPD 4), Byers earned the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) badge and Fleet Marine Force (FMF) warfare device. After graduation, he attended the Special Operations Combat Medic (SOCM) course and was subsequently assigned to East Coast SEAL Teams. He has deployed overseas 11 times with nine combat tours. Byers was promoted to the rank of senior chief petty officer in January 2016. In addition to the Medal of Honor, Byers personal decorations include the Bronze Star with Valor (five awards), the Purple Heart (two awards), the Joint Service Commendation Medal with Valor, the Navy Commendation Medal (three awards, one with Valor), the Combat Action ribbon (two awards) and the Good Conduct Medal (five awards)

Soccer Fun Facts From NSA Public Affairs

A standard soccer ball measures between 27 and 28 inches in circumference weighs between 14 and 16 ounces, and has 32 panels, which are made up of 12 black pentagons (five-sided) and 20 white hexagons (six-sided) shapes. The ancient Romans played a game called “harpastum,” which closely resembles what we now call soccer. Soccer supposedly gained popularity in Great Britain, when inmates at Newgate Prison in the early 1800s discovered the sport. Prisoners, who had their hands cut off for being thieves, liked the sport because they didn’t need their (now-missing) hands to play. The first live telecast of soccer was September 16, 1937, during a practice match between Arsenal and Arsenal Reserves at Highbury stadium. Soccer is the world’s most popular sport. The game is known as football throughout the world, except Canada and the United States where it is called “soccer” to avoid confusion with football (the game with the pointy, oval-shaped ball and lots of big players in plastic armor and helmets). A worldwide survey launched by FIFA in 2000 indicates that more than 240 million

people regularly play soccer around the world, along with almost five million referees, assistant referees and officials directly involved in the game. There is at least one soccer player in 30 percent of American homes, and the number of high school soccer players in America has more than doubled since 1990. A soccer field is called a “pitch” because every regulation field is pitched – or sloped – five degrees upwards from one end to the other. The teams switch sides after each half so each team has to play slightly uphill for half the match. Brazilian soccer legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, is widely considered as the greatest soccer player of all time. He is listed in the Guinness World Records for most career goals (1,281 goals in 1,363 games). In 1997, he received an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II at a ceremony in Buckingham Palace, and two years later Time magazine named him in their list of 100 most influential people of the 20th century.
