NSA Naples Association Holds Capua Amphitheater Clean-Up Story by Lt. Jamie Moroney, NSA Naples Public Affairs

The Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples First Class Petty Officer Association (FCPOA) hosted a community relations (COMREL) event with 48 volunteers to clean-up the Capua Amphitheater, Nov. 18.

Volunteers from various area commands and organizations including NSA Naples, Allied Joint Forces Command (JFC) International Club, U.S. Naval Hospital Naples, and other NSA Naples tenant commands came together to collect trash, trim hedges, pull weeds, and assist with other beautification tasks around the ancient Italian historical site.

“The addition of these boats to Ukraine’s naval fleet will expand the Ukrainian Navy’s operational capacity and response potential to defend the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” said Pennington. “The boats will also provide greater situational awareness in the Black Sea, increasing the security of Ukraine’s coastline and shipping lanes, and they will help Ukraine to prevent smuggling through its waters.”

NSA Naples is hosting a Holiday Concert! To celebrate our community stationed here in bella Napoli, the Commander, Naval Forces Europe Band and NSA Naples are working together to spread holiday cheer to the whole community in a free concert at 2 p.m. on Dec. 15, location to be released later. I encourage our personnel and their families to save the date on this one. If you’re not travelling, I hope you’ll make the short trip to come see one of the best bands in the Navy play holiday songs for you and your loved ones. The event location is beautiful, and the band director has guaranteed that the acoustics will be fantastic. This concert is being held to celebrate all of your hard work, and I look forward to seeing you there.

Speaking of things to listen to, my radio show is coming up at 7 a.m. on Nov. 25. My show airs once per month, and I have the opportunity to tell you about all of the great things going on around NSA Naples. From upcoming big events, to Adm. Foggo’s podcast, and everything in between, I want to make sure that you know what’s going on in your community. This radio show will feature a subject matter expert from our Public Works department to discuss upcoming construction projects and improvements going on around the base.

Also on my show, as always, I’ll be asking a trivia question. We’re all about “one team, one fight” out here, so make sure that everyone is included in the holiday fun.

There are many festive MWR events during this time of year, so don’t hesitate to get involved or take an adventure. If you feel like you need additional resources for yourself or someone you know, reach out to a Chaplain or Religious Programs Specialist. We all have a lot to be thankful for this year. I am thankful for my family, for my amazing team here at NSA Naples that does such an excellent job, and being stationed overseas in Italy; a host nation of our friends, allies and partners. Liceo Calamandrei High School Visits NSA Naples Story by Lt. Jamie Moroney NSA Naples Public Affairs

Nineteen students and two teachers from Liceo Calamandrei High School of Ponticelli in the Campania region toured Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples to learn about the NSA Naples mission and capabilities, Nov. 15.

Students and teachers visited the Capodichino site and toured the air terminal, chapel, gym and more to learn about the U.S. Navy, Sailors, and their mission while serving abroad.

“The student’s love [these tours] because they get a taste of this American culture and they see how Americans live abroad in their country,” said Liceo Calamandrei teacher Gina Rose. “They really like it.”

After being welcomed by NSA Naples’ Community Relations Specialist Dr. ssa Teresa Merola, the students attended a general briefing on air operations and the operational and support functions of NSA Naples.

After the brief, the students toured one of the C-26 aircraft, and then were able to watch the takeoff of one of the aircraft in support of a mission.

“My favorite part of the tour was probably going in to the cockpit of the airplane,” said William, a second year student at the school.

“I definitely feel like I’m learning something.

It almost feels like a miniature American city.”

The participants were also briefed by the fire department, the USO, a chaplain, a naval aviator, and others.

The school visit is part of the NSA Naples community relations program, organized by the NSA Naples public affairs office, which coordinates events that fortify relationships in the host nation community of Naples, Italy.

“These tours are good for the students from a linguistic point of view,” said Rose. “It’s also good for them to see a different culture and place in their own country that they don’t know.”

NSA Naples is an operational ashore base that enables U.S., allied, and partner nation forces to be where they are needed, when they are needed to ensure security and stability in Europe, Africa, and Southwest Asia.

HISTORY: NAVAJO CODE TALKERS OF WORLD WAR II From Naval History and Heritage Command

Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Peleliu, Iwo Jima: the Navajo code talkers took part in every assault the U.S. Marines conducted in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945.

They served in all six Marine divisions, Marine Raider battalions and Marine parachute units, transmitting messages by telephone and radio in their native language a code that the Japanese never broke.

The idea to use Navajo for secure communications came from Philip Johnston, the son of a missionary to the Navajos and one of the few nonNavajos who spoke their language fluently. Johnston, reared on the Navajo reservation, was a World War I veteran who knew of the military’s search for a code that would withstand all attempts to decipher it. He also knew that Native American languages notably Choctaw had been used in World War I to encode messages.

Johnston believed Navajo answered the military requirement for an undecipherable code because Navajo is an unwritten language of extreme complexity. Its syntax and tonal qualities, not to mention dialects, make it unintelligible to anyone without extensive exposure and training. It has no alphabet or symbols, and is spoken only on the Navajo lands of the American Southwest. One estimate indicates that less than 30 non-Navajos, none of them Japanese, could understand the language at the outbreak of World War II.

Early in 1942, Johnston met with Major General Clayton B. Vogel, the commanding general of Amphibious Corps, Pacific Fleet, and his staff to convince them of the Navajo language’s value as code.

Johnston staged tests under simulated combat conditions, demonstrating that Navajos could encode, transmit, and decode a three-line English message in 20 seconds.

Machines of the time required 30 minutes to perform the same job. Convinced, Vogel recommended to the Commandant of the Marine Corps that the Marines recruit 200 Navajos.

In May 1942, the first 29 Navajo recruits attended boot camp. Then, at Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California, this first group created the Navajo code. They developed a dictionary and numerous words for military terms. The dictionary and all code words had to be memorized during training.

Once a Navajo code talker completed his training, he was sent to a Marine unit deployed in the Pacific theater. The code talkers’ primary job was to talk, transmitting information on tactics and troop movements, orders and other vital battlefield communications over telephones and radios.

They also acted as messengers, and performed general Marine duties.

Praise for their skill, speed and accuracy accrued throughout the war. At Iwo Jima, Major Howard Connor, 5th Marine Division signal officer, declared, “Were it not for the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima.” Connor had six Navajo code talkers working around the clock during the first two

days of the battle. Those six sent and received over 800 messages, all without error.

The Japanese, who were skilled code breakers, remained baffled by the Navajo language. The Japanese chief of intelligence, Lieutenant General Seizo Arisue, said that while they were able to decipher the codes used by the U.S. Army and Army Air Corps, they never cracked the code used by the Marines. The Navajo code talkers even stymied a Navajo soldier taken prisoner at Bataan. (About 20 Navajos served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines.) The Navajo soldier, forced to listen to the jumbled words of talker transmissions, said to a code talker after the war, “I never figured out what you guys who got me into all that trouble were saying.”

In 1942, there were about 50,000 Navajo tribe members.

As of 1945, about 540 Navajos served as Marines. From 375 to 420 of those trained as code talkers; the rest served in other capacities.

Navajo remained potentially valuable as code even after the war. For that reason, the code talkers, whose skill and courage saved both American lives and military engagements, only recently earned recognition from the Government and the public.

The Navajo Code Talker’s Dictionary When a Navajo code talker received a message, what he heard was a string of seemingly unrelated Navajo words. The code talker first had to translate each Navajo word into its English equivalent. Then he used only the first letter of the English equivalent in spelling an English word. Thus, the

Navajo words “wol-la-chee” (ant), “be-la-sana” (apple) and “tse-nill” (axe) all stood for the letter “a.” One way to say the word “Navy” in Navajo code would be “tsah (needle) wol-la-chee (ant) ah-keh-diglini (victor) tsah-ah-dzoh (yucca).”

Most letters had more than one Navajo word representing them. Not all words had to be spelled out letter by letter.

The developers of the original code assigned Navajo words to represent about 450 frequently used military terms that did not exist in the Navajo language. Several examples: “besh- lo” (iron fish) meant “submarine,” “dah-he- tih-hi” (hummingbird) meant “fighter plane” and “debeh-lizine” (black street) meant “squad.”

Department of Defense Honors Navajo Veterans Long unrecognized because of the continued value of their language as a security classified code, the Navajo

code talkers of World War II were honored for their contributions to defense on Sept. 17, 1992, at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. Thirty-five code talkers, all veterans of the U.S. Marine Corps, attended the dedication of the Navajo code talker exhibit. The exhibit includes a display of photographs, equipment and the original code, along with an explanation of how the code worked.

Dedication ceremonies included speeches by the then-Deputy Secretary of Defense Donald Atwood, U.S. Senator John McCain of Arizona and Navajo President Peterson Zah. The Navajo veterans and their families traveled to the ceremony from their homes on the Navajo Reservation, which includes parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.

The Navajo code talker exhibit is a regular stop on the Pentagon tour.

Naples Tiger Sharks Define Dedication

Throughout October and the first week of November, 2019, the Naples Tiger Sharks swim team traveled Italy, participated in swim meets, and qualified many swimmers for future competition.

It was a busy month for the Naples Tiger Sharks Swim Team. Along with ramping up the intensity of training in preparation for the European Forces Swim League (EFSL) Long Distance Championship at the end of November and the Short Course Championships later in the season, the team traveled to back-to-back away meets held in Vicenza and Sigonella, Italy.

The Tiger Sharks were clear winners in the meets against the Vicenza and Aviano teams, held on Oct. 5 and 6.

Additionally, many Tiger Shark swimmers attained personal bests as well as qualified for both Long Distance Championships and Short Course Championships in several events.

The following week in Sigonella, the Sigonella Swordfish hosted a pentathlon on Saturday, Oct. 12, and a standard meet on Sunday, Oct. 13.

For both the pentathlon and the standard meet, the team had numerous personal bests and qualifying times.

Though not winning the overall event, Assistant Coach Joshua Montalvo praised the swimmers for their hard work and accomplishments.

The Naples Tiger Sharks finished off the month of October with three days of intra-squad time trials, which gave an additional opportunity for more swimmers to qualify for Long Distance Championships. Depending on age and abilities, swimmers could opt to swim the 400-meter freestyle, the 400-meter individual medley, the 800-meter freestyle and the 1500-meter freestyle.

A total of 16 swimmers achieved qualifying times, many qualifying for more than one event over the course of the time trials. Many of those qualifying swimmers will be traveling to Bruges at the end of November to represent the Naples Tiger Sharks and attempt to place on the podium at the Long Distance Championships.

The Naples Tiger Sharks hosted their first home meet of the season on Veterans Day weekend, with Naples welcoming around 200 swimmers coming from various teams in the EFSL. In addition to a full meet schedule, the team conducted fundraising events.

Swimmers were found bagging purchases at the Navy Exchange on Support Site in Gricignano, Nov. 3, and serving delicious sausage and peppers meals at Capodichino, Nov. 19.

ENERGY CONSERVATION Heating Your Home In The Winter From NSA Naples Energy Management Team

We are not bears hibernating, therefore we don’t have heavy winter coats. What we do have are heating systems in our homes and offices.

Turning on the heater seems simple, but there is more to it than you might think.

Warming up your home uses a noticeable – and expensive – amount of energy. Space heating and cooling can account for almost half of a home’s energy use making it one of the largest energy expenses in any home, but there are ways to make your heater work less while making your home more efficient in the amount of energy it uses to heat.

Suggested thermostat settings are 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit during the day (this is warm enough to be comfortable but not cold). Also, heating units work just as hard and produce less heat if they are not able to breathe due to dirty air filters, so change them regularly (approximately every three months).

Remember to shut it off on your way out the door if you are not going to be home. Turn the heater off if you are going on vacation or taking leave. Heating an empty house will cost you money that could be better spent on other things, and it puts a strain on our environment.

And lastly, turn off heaters during the night or set your thermostat between 58 and 62 degrees Fahrenheit. Your body decreases its temperature during the night, so this will actually help you sleep better and save a bunch on your electric bill. Remember, you can always add a heavy blanket to heat yourself for eight hours instead of the whole house.

NEX and Navy Lodge Welcome Home Veterans and Their Caregivers From Navy Exchange Service Command Public Affairs

Just announced, beginning on Jan. 1, 2020, the Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) is expanding NEX in-store shopping and Navy Lodge guest privileges to eligible Veterans and their primary-selected caregiver. The expanded benefit applies to Veterans with a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)-documented service-connected disability rating, Purple Heart recipients, former prisoners of war and primary family caregivers for veterans enrolled in the VA’s Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers.

“Our command is truly grateful for everything our Veterans have done for our nation and we’re pleased to welcome them back in our NEX stores and Navy Lodges,” said retired Rear Adm. Robert J. Bianchi, CEO of NEXCOM. “NEXCOM’s mission is one of service, and since many of our 14,000 personnel have worn cloth of our nation, this expansion hits close to home. We’re proud to be part of this effort and serve our nation’s patriots by continuing to give back 100% of NEXCOM’s earnings to our Sailors and their families, through capital improvements or contributions to Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs— totaling $3.6 billion since 1946!”

The patronage expansion was an item included in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019. Along with military resale and Navy Lodging, the benefit expansion includes commissary shopping privileges as well as MWR activity use. This new initiative is expected to extend eligibility to approximately 4.1 million new patrons, comprised of nearly 1.5 million Veterans who live within an hour of a military installation, of which 406,546 are U.S. Navy Veterans.

To access Department of Defense installations and obtain expanded privileges on Jan. 1, 2020, Veterans must present a Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) from VA that displays their eligibility category, “PURPLE HEART, FORMER POW or SERVICE-CONNECTED.” Caregivers must present an eligibility letter from the VA Office of Community Care that indicates they are the primary family caregiver for an eligible Veteran under the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers and are eligible for these privileges, paired with an acceptable identification credential, like a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or a U.S. passport. These credentials will need to be presented at point-of-sale at the NEX or check-in at the Navy Lodge.

The patrol boats received from U.S. 6th Fleet and the U.S. Coast Guard were named after the cities in the Ukrainian Donbass — Sloviansk and Starobilsk.

These names perpetuate the memory of the fallen defenders of Ukraine, natives of these cities — sailor Olexandr Veremeyenko and senior sailor Stepan Kryl from Starobilsk, sailor Roman Napriaglia, senior sailor Sergiy Mayboroda from Sloviansk. They gave their lives for Ukraine’s independence.

In addition, before the commissioning ceremony, 34 Ukrainian Navy sailors worked and trained with the U.S. Coast Guard for a 10 week program in Baltimore, Maryland so that they would be ready to take operational command of the Island-class patrol boats on arrival.

“These patrol boats have long been the workhorse platform of the U.S. Coast Guard’s coastal fleet; they’re tough, efficient, and versatile,” said U.S. Coast Guard Cmdr. Chris Davis, U.S. Coast Guard liaison officer at U.S. 6th Fleet. “They are excellent additions to the Ukrainian Navy charged to provide maritime security for Ukraine.”

During the ceremony, the U.S. government formally announced the upcoming transfer of three more patrol boats.

“As part of our continuing support to Ukraine, I’m also pleased to announce today that in addition to these two Island-Class Patrol Boats that we are transferring here today, the United States will provide three additional Island-Class Patrol Boats.” said Pennington.

These boats are just a small part of over 1.6 billion dollars in security assistance the United States has provided to Ukraine since 2014.

U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied, joint, and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.

“This COMREL was to enhance the base participation between the many different tenant commands we have here at NSA Naples as well as help preserve history within the local community,” said Martinez. “There’s a lot of history and not enough help at this location to keep it looking as it should; as an Italian treasure.”

The COMREL event lasted for three hours as volunteers bagged refuse and assisted with various gardening tasks at the second-largest Roman amphitheater in the world, second only to the Colosseum in Rome, Italy.

Sandy Blackburn, an active member of the JFC International Club and one of the amphitheater clean-up volunteers, participates in many COMREL events and recognizes the importance in preserving history and finding a connection to the community in overseas duty stations.

“These events are important as they build bridges of cultural understanding,” said Blackburn.

“They endorse the message of friendship and show the Italian people how lucky we feel to be able to have the opportunity to listen to their stories and experience their culture whilst living in their country.”

Many service members enjoy volunteering for community events for the cultural ties, history, and the opportunity it gives them to connect with Italians, said Dr. ssa Teresa Merola, the NSA Naples community relations specialist.

“I have been in this position for more than 20 years,” said Merola. “Sailors are always excited to participate in these events and Italians are always happy and very appreciative to see Americans helping the community.”

Martinez looks forward to coordinating future COMREL events, and is always looking for more ways to show appreciation for the local Italian community.

are all ambassadors to the locations we serve at,” said Martinez. “To me it is important to show the local community that we do care about the locations we serve in and that we also enjoy what each area has to offer. What better way to show that appreciation than to help by cleaning and helping restore historical sites?”

The First Thanksgiving Feast From NSA Public Affairs

When you hear the word Thanksgiving, what do you think of? For many people the answer is “turkey” or “pumpkin pie,” but the truth is it’s unlikely that either of those Thanksgiving staples were at the first feast. So what did they eat?

The first Thanksgiving was held in 1621 to mark the Pilgrims’ first harvest with help from their Wampanoag neighbors. Historical documents state that before the feast the Pilgrims went out hunting for “fowl” which were plentiful there in autumn. This could have included ducks, geese, and even swans. The Native Americans brought an offering of five deer, which could be roasted over an open fire. There was also an abundance of fresh seafood in the area, and it’s believed to have comprised most of the meat at the first Thanksgiving.

Of course there were plenty of vegetables, including pumpkins, but at

the time there was no butter or wheat flower for making crust. It’s likely that the closest thing to pumpkin pie they had was custard made inside a hollowed out pumpkin.

They still got to spend the day with their families, feasting and making merry right? Well, not exactly. The only eye witness account said there was “some 90 men” in attendance. It was said to be a gathering to guarantee a military alliance between the Wampanoags and the Pilgrims. It’s likely the English women were doing the cooking. It wasn’t just a dinner they were making either. The first Thanksgiving lasted for three whole days.

Even though the origins are the holiday are different than most people remember, the fact remains that the Pilgrims made it through a tough time thanks to some help from the Wampanoags. They joined together with their friends to give thanks for what they had, and in that respect, their traditions weren’t so different from ours.
