The interactive Rock ‘n’ Roll musical consist of four lovable characters: Kaiya the Kangaroo – keyboards and lead vocals, Walter the Fox – lead guitar and vocals, Brandon the Bear – bass guitar, and Lance the Lion – drums who took to the stage at the Support Site gym to sing and dance for more than 150 members of the military community. Their friends, Teeny and Tiny danced on their stilts, along with Sky Blue, Bendy, Tommy the Clown, and DJ Penguin who mixed up some beats.

Defense Priorities The secretary said his first priority is to help President Barack Obama to make the best possible national security decisions and then to implement those decisions.

Second, he said, is to ensure the strength and health of Defense Department personnel around the world, and the third priority is the future of the department’s course, its people and its technology.

To achieve these priorities, Carter said, he’s traveled to Afghanistan and Kuwait to meet with American personnel working there, and he has worked with Congress to secure the resources needed to protect the country and continue to build the force of the future while gaining stability in the defense budget.

On Wednesday we held a number of events on both Capodichino and Support Site in celebration of Earth Day. The Navy uses a lot of energy, from a lot of different sources, to support our global mission.

On Earth day it is important to remember that our energy resources, for the most part, come from non-renewable sources and that we need to do our best to ensure they are being used efficiently and effectively. The Navy has undertaken a number of high-profile initiatives to contribute to our nation’s energy security. By reducing our energy consumption we save money that can be used for other projects. Energy efficiency measures can be as simple as turning off the light switch when you leave a room. Let’s all do our part to keep energy consumption in mind.

I have received an increasing number of reports concerning parking tickets, towing, and car-boots out in town. The warmer weather means more people are visiting downtown Naples and Pozzouli and consequently parking demand has increased.

Please make every effort to understand the rules and park legally in spaces that allow for long term parking, and buy parking vouchers when necessary. Be sure to leave early for events and activities in the more populous areas of Naples to leave more time to find parking. In the long run, avoiding the headache of dealing with tickets, towing, or boots on your vehicle is worth a few extra minutes of your time.

This past weekend during a flea market in Agnano, one of our community members noticed what looked like an explosive device, specifically a mine, on display at one of the stalls. Upon further inspection the device appeared active and a quick call was made to Emergency Dispatch who in turn called the Italian police. The flea market was evacuated and the scene was roped off until the Italian Explosive Ordinance Disposal personnel arrived and secured the scene. NSA Naples often works and trains closely with the Italian authorities and this past weekend, thanks to that strong relationship, we were able to coordinate effectively on a potentially hazardous situation.

After the device was analyzed we learned that it was filled with a harmless plastic substance in place of explosives. I want to remind everyone to remain vigilant even though we are not in a combat zone. It took a substantial amount of situational awareness to realize that this device, at the time assumed dangerous, could have been used against us or the local population. If you see something suspicious, say something immediately! I would like to thank this member of the community, and everyone at Emergency Dispatch, Security, and NCIS for handling the situation with speed and precision. The events that took place last weekend were an exemplary performance of international teamwork and responsible action.

Carinaro Whirlpool-Indesit Plant Closing; 1,350 Losing Jobs The Whirlpool-Indesit plant located in Carinaro, a town in the Caserta province, is closing its plant with 1,350 jobs being cut, consisting of 1,200 factory workers and 150 research jobs. Last July, the American giant Whirlpool bought control of the Italian home-appliance maker Indesit, which has been based in Marche. A deal signed at that time by some union representatives as well as Italian local and central governments was designed to avoid 1,425 lay-offs and ensure 83 million euros worth of investment.

Carinaro plant workers are staging continuing protests over job cuts. Last Monday morning they blocked the entrance to a different warehouse that serves as a distribution point for products, and also staged a blockade of the Marcianise-Giugliano highway. This forced law enforcement officials to close ramps, which snarled traffic and created long lines of stalled traffic. This week, meetings were held between Premier Matteo Renzi, labor union representatives and Whirlpool-Indesist management. At the moment there is no further news regarding either solutions.

World War I Communication Display at Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano An interesting exhibition is taking place in Naples at Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano in via Toledo 185 on The Great War (World War I).

More than 80 posters and magazines, newspapers, postcars are on display. The theme of the exhibition is communication and the role that it played before, during and after the outbreak of the conflict. The exhibition will give the opportunity to visit the splendid Palazzo which was turned in a real museum with more than 120 works including many masterpieces about the city of Naples from 17th century until the early 20th century. The exhibition will be open until August 23. A joint ticket for the exhibition and the visiting of the permanent collections is 7 euros.

Rome’s Gaius Cestius ‘Pyramid’ Tomb Restored The Egyptian-style pyramid-shaped tomb of Gaius Cestius in Rome was restored to its white ancient glory, following a two-millioneuro project initiated in March 2013. The funding was donated by Japanese fashion Yuzo Yagi to the the innovative internal and external restoration. Yagi donated two million euros to the innovative internal and

external restoration that required a mix of traditional and non-tradition conservation in areas such as vegetation removal, marble façade protection, marble panel stabilization and damage prevention, and a handicap-accessible entrance ramp. The renovation job was carried out by a team led by two women. The 120 foot-hight pyramid was constructed in 330 days and made of white Carrara marble.

86-Year-Old Stonemason Receives High-School Diploma It is never too late to get a diploma, and this how an 86-year-old stonemason got his junior high diploma three years ago with top marks. The Sicilian man quit school at the age of 11 to help his family make end meet.

At the age of 17, he worked in a French mine followed by military service at 21.

After that he went to work in the railways, but never gave up his passion for stonemasonry and sculpture. His work now adorns several churches in Palermo-area towns, sources said.

Shroud of Turin on Public Display Through June 24 The Holy Shroud – which is usually not open to the public – will be exhibited through June 24 at the Cathedral of San Giovanni in Turin. Believers say the lined Shroud was used to wrap the body of Jesus after his crucifixion and they believe it bears the image of the dead Jesus. Countless scientific tests have been conducted over the years revealing the outline of the body of a man embedded in the fabric. Radiocarbon-dating tests conducted on the cloth in 1988 suggested it dated from between 1260 and 1390; however, other scientists have since claimed those results could have been distorted by centuries of contamination. The last exposition to the public were in 2000, 2010 and 2013. The Church permitted the Shroud to be filmed and broadcast only twice, in November 1973 and in 2013. The Shroud will be exhibited for 67 days because it will coincide with the bicentenary birth of Catholic educator Saint John Bosco, a priest who worked in the 19th century in the industrialized Turin to better the lives of street children and disadvantaged youth, and with a visit by Pope Francis June 21 and 22. Pope Francis will celebrate the Mass on the 21st and on the next day he will visit for the first time the Waldensian Temple, the Evangelic Church. It’s that time of year again when runny noses and itchy eyes run rampant as a mix of the spring flu and allergies plague most of the human population.

How do doctors determine whether it’s allergies, the flu or perhaps something else? Laboratory professionals play a key role in the accurate diagnosing and the clinical decision making for the patient population they serve.

National Medical Laboratory Professionals week is a time to recognize the people who work in one of the least known aspects of medical care and yet, more than 70 percent of medical decisions made by physicians are based on laboratory findings.

Does this tissue sample indicate carcinoma? What organism is causing this patient to be ill and what antibiotics can we use to treat it? What blood products can we give to this patient during an emergency operation? Does this patient with cancer have a blood count high enough to receive their chemotherapy today?

These are the questions that laboratory professionals can provide answers to.

Using microscopes, cell counters, and other specialized equipment laboratory personnel are able to examine and analyze body fluids, cells; identify microorganisms;

and cross match blood for transfusions. After testing, they analyze and interpret the data to provide the necessary information physicians need to treat their patients.

The laboratory is composed of different sections such as hematology, microbiology and blood bank that assist in answering the question, “What is happening in this patient?”

Hematology technicians count and analyze blood cells that indicate clinical conditions such as anemia. Microbiology technologists identify bacteria and other microorganisms causing infection such as strep throat. Blood bankers determine blood type, screen and identify antibodies, and prepare blood products, such as platelets, for transfusion.

The Good Conduct Medal was established by the Secretary of the Navy on April 26, 1869, to recognize the “all-around” good Navy enlisted person, well qualified in all phases of conduct and performance.

The Good Conduct Medal is our nation’s third-oldest continuously presented award, becoming established after both the Navy and Army Medal of Honor. Also, the Navy’s Good Conduct Medal is the oldest of the Good Conduct Medals: The Marine Corps issued their first Good Conduct Medal in 1896; the Coast Guard in 1923; and the Army in 1941.

The Good Conduct Medal’s history began well before the Civil War not as a medal or badge, but as a simple discharge form signed by a Sailor’s commanding officer certifying the man’s service.

This form had to be presented at a recruiting station as proof of seagoing experience.

A post-Civil War push for re-enlistments prompted Secretary of the Navy A.E. Borie to authorize the good conduct badge on April 26, 1869.

Sailors were issued a separate badge for each discharge with good conduct. The

badge, and related discharge papers, had to be shown to the recruiting officer at the time of re-enlistment to prove the quality of previous service as well as to obtain any reenlistment bonus and receive credit for continuous service.

A Sailor with 20 years of good conduct was eligible for a pension or admission to a naval home or hospital. Re-enlistment with three badges allowed rating as a petty officer, with any reduction in rank limited to the sentence of a court martial.

The use of award bars to recognize repeat awards continued from 1884 until the 1930s when the name of the ship or duty station was replaced with an engraving of the year in which the enlistment ended.

The “year” bars was in use until World War II when diestruck bars for “SECOND AWARD,” “THIRD AWARD,” etc. were authorized.

Around 1950, 3/16 inch stars replaced the bars. Each bronze star represents one additional good conduct enlistment, and a silver star is worn in lieu of five bronze stars.

On Feb. 1, 1971, commanding officers were authorized to award the Navy Good Conduct Medal and certificates.

SPOTLIGHT: HM2 KEVIN MALONE Born and raised in Washington State, HM2 Kevin Malone enlisted in the Navy in March 2009 and graduated from advanced medical laboratory technician school in October 2010. His prior assignments include Naval Hospital Bremerton and the hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) during Pacific Partnership 2012.

Upon arrival at Naval Hospital Naples, Italy, Malone was assigned as the blood bank’s leading petty officer. His responsibilities include overseeing accurate issuance of blood products and components to all active duty and DOD members in the area of operation. He also serves as the laboratory’s expert on blood product deglycerolization, producing viable units of blood products for our beneficiaries and areawide fleet support contingency efforts.

Malone is a stellar Sailor and when not involved in providing excellent patient care he likes to travel and spend time with his family.

ThanksUSA Offers Scholarships to Children, Spouses of U.S. Troops DoD News, Defense Media Activity

WASHINGTON – ThanksUSA, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to thanking America's troops through the gift of education, is inviting children and spouses of America's armed forces to apply for its postsecondary education scholarships.

Those interested can apply via the organization’s website, and the application period extends from today through May 15, 2015, the release said.

“Ten years after ThanksUSA was launched, we remain committed to helping military families flourish and advance their dreams through education,” ThanksUSA CEO and Chairman Bob Okun said in the release. “It's how we can offer our collective gratitude as a nation for all that our servicemen and women and their families do for us.”

Offering Needs-based Scholarships ThanksUSA provides need-based scholarships to the children and spouses of service members across all the armed forces, including the reserves, giving special consid-

eration to families of the fallen and wounded, according to the release. Over the past decade, the said the organization has raised more than $10 million, resulting in nearly 3,400 scholarships. Up to 500 students are expected to receive awards this season, totaling $1.5 million.

“We believe 2015 applications will exceed 2,000 again this year, a strong indication of military families' persistent need for assistance,” Okun said in the release. “Our objective is to raise awareness of the support our military families need on the education front while they sacrifice daily on the front lines through deployments, family separations, and transfers across the country and overseas. Through ThanksUSA, those who lack the resources can pursue their goals.”

ThanksUSA is a nonpartisan, charitable effort to mobilize Americans of all ages to thank the men and women of the U.S. military for their service to the nation, the release said. The organization provides college, technical and vocational school scholarships to the children and spouses of military personnel.

Preventing Child Abuse is Everyone’s Responsibility

The Defense Department observes April as the Month of the Military Child, and also recognizes this time of year as it pertains to a more sobering topic: National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

In a recent DoD news interview, Barbara Thompson – director of DoD’s Office of Family Readiness – stressed that anyone aware of red flags and potential cases of abuse has an obligation to bring the concerns to light.

Learning how to support parents, identify risks and mitigate those risks are critical elements in child abuse prevention, she added.

“We have a role, each and every one of us, to support children’s health and safety,” Thompson said. “Parenting is one of the hardest jobs and responsibilities that we’ll ever have, and the one that also has the most love.”

Multipronged Approach to Prevent Abuse DoD has taken a multipronged approach to help parents provide a safe,

healthy, nurturing environment for their children, Thompson said. Through military treatment facilities, she added, perinatal nurses and doctors can support military families’ unique needs. Pediatricians are among the most trusted sources of information for parents, she noted.

Thompson also discussed the New Parent Support Program, in which parents can seek help through family advocacy and even in-home visits to reinforce safety and help them avoid risks of neglect or abuse.

“You’re moving every two to three years,” she said. “You’re away from your extended family, or service members are deployed, which means we now have a stay-at-home parent who’s by himself or herself, and we want to make sure the resources are available to strengthen their parenting skills.”

The National Center for Telehealth and Technology’s website offers tips and tools to help military and veteran parents during different stages of their children’s growth and development, Thomson said.

Military OneSource offers confidential, nonmedical counseling that helps par-

ents learn communication skills to better identify and understand behavioral changes in their children, particularly those in the toddler stages, she added.

‘The Terrific Twos’ “[That phase] is sometimes called ‘The Terrible Twos,’ but I like to call it ‘The Terrific Twos,’ because children’s budding personalities are developing,” she said, acknowledging that “it can be challenging when they’re saying ‘no’ to you all the time.”

But parents equipped with skills to offset children’s challenging behaviors often develop confidence and openness to additional resources that will foster long-term readiness and flexibility in reacting to their child’s unique personality, Thompson said.

“Children are very different,” she pointed out, “so what works for one of your children will not necessarily work for another one.”

Parents who return from deployments with visible or invisible injuries may particularly benefit from DoD and Military OneSource resources tailored to their specific needs, Thompson said.

Evidence Supports Protective Factors Research and empirical evidence indicate that certain protective factors buffer and mitigate risks military families could experience, and working with schools, pediatricians, chaplains and child development staff members is key to keeping those avenues of communication open, Thompson said.

“We want to make sure that … parents are aware how important it is to foment a nurturing, attached relationship with their young children … and manage expectations from both the child’s perspective as well as their perspective,” she said. “We know [having this information] reduces the risk of committing abuse, because you have these tools to help you catch yourself before it happens.”

Officials are seeking to eradicate the stigma behind identifying and reporting child abuse, Thompson said, and to promote communities’ greater familiarity with the National Child Abuse Hotline and other resources designed to help parents who may be struggling with appropriate nurturing and disciplinary roles with their children.

“Each one of us has to take a stand to protect not only military children, but all children,” Thompson said.

WALES from page 1 thankfully, fell in line with what we could already confirm but extended our known family line back across centuries and an ocean.

One particular line, the Middletons, came from Wales, a country in western Great Britain that shares the island with England and Scotland.

The Middletons were a noble family (yet not Kate Middleton’s, go figure) so finding records of them was easy. Using the Welsh Dictionary of Biography extended the line back even further to around 1000 AD and gave further information and stories about some of my ancestors.

The names I’d gotten from the websites were often tied to locations which I used as potential stops on my trip. My list started with Ludlow and Caernarfon as well as the two castles were associated with the Middleton name, Denbigh and Chirk.

Caernarfon was added because my father’s great-grandfather was from there.

Helping decide what else to see or what not to bother with were city websites which showcase their points of interest and what’s going on. While vetting towns I also reviewed British train and public transportation websites to see how I could best spend my time and what was too out of the way.

Choosing the castle or castles to visit took more research.

Some of my Middleton ancestors were governors in Denbighshire and ruled from Denbigh Castle, but what was once the seat of power has faded into a tricky to get to small town with castle ruins.

My other option was Chirk.

Chirk, built by a Marcher Lord to enforce English rule on the borderland and later owned

by Sir Thomas Myddelton, is different than the majority of Welsh castles in that it never fell into ruin. From its construction in 1295 until today, Chirk has always been lived in or cared for making it an excellent stop on the trip.

Chirk was in, and Denbigh

was out. I discovered this worked out very well as Chirk and the other towns where on the same train line and about a stop away from each other.

Caernarfon was a short bus ride away from the same train line.

This planning culminated in a memorable trip complete with black-and-white medieval towns, famous churches tower and impressive castles. This was made all the more special because each location had personal significance.

Many of my ancestors came from the Welsh Marches, the once-contested borderland of hills and sheep between England and Wales. The Marches are home to many old castles and walled towns from the days England fought to enforce its rule. Ludlow and Shrewsbury were two of those towns that I visited on the English side, and sitting on the Welsh was Wrexham.

In the Marches town of Ludlow there weren’t any particular locations associated my ancestor, 13th century knight Sir Geofory LeYonge, but the town is a bit of a time capsule from his era. The original town maintains its middle-ages layout, ancient castle and church and many of the half-timber black-and-white buildings that fill it are original. I was even able to visit a tavern that’s been around since just after Sir Geoffrey.

While in Ludlow I also took a side trip to Sir Charles Darwin’s hometown, Shrewsbury.

Similar to Ludlow, it has a preserved historic center but lacks the dominant medieval castle.

It made for a pleasant day out but the only tenuous connection I had to it was one of my more distant Welsh ancestors is notable for “the slaughter of the English as far as the swamplands of Tern beyond Shrewsbury.” Because that’s how you find Welsh history in England.

On the Welsh side of my Marches travel was Wrexham.

St. Gile’s Church is its most famous feature as its bell tower is one of the “Seven Wonders of Wales,” and it’s the final resting place of Elihu Yale, founder of

Yale University. For me, what made it unique is the white marble statue of Mary Middleton inside the church.

Before coming to Wales I’d checked the Chirk Castle website which said the estate was open the day I wished to visit, which I took to mean the castle was open. What I didn’t catch in the fine print was that the estate is the castle grounds not the castle, which was closed, so visiting the interior of the castle and its museum of family history would have to wait for another trip.

The Middletons of Chirk were not my direct ancestors, but rather began with the brother of one. Because the castle contained a museum on the family history I was hoping to learn more about who came before those Middletons. What I learned online gave me a good starting point but I wanted more information and details.

Originally they were not known as “Middleton.” Being Welsh they didn’t have last names when Rhirid ap David married Cecilia de Middleton and adopted her family name.

Prior to that the closest they had to a family name came from the early middle ages and a man who called himself Blaidd Rhudd, which is less a proper name and more like a title. It means “The Bloody Wolf,” and from there he had a string of successive ‘Wolves’ who’s past times included landholding, fighting, not being English and claiming to be descended from the first king of northern Wales even if no one really believes them. Even my noble ancestors wanted to claim ancestors even nobler still.

Though I wasn’t able to get more on the trip itself, I did get contact information from the Wrexham County Museum during my stop there. Wrexham was once part of Denbighshire, which was governed by Middletons for almost a century so they may have information about their former governors in the archives. Local museums like this are more than depositories of local culture but can be a resource for genealogists.

Caernarfon was different than the Welsh Marches for a few reasons besides the majestic splendor of Caernarfon Castle.

The visit was based on my father’s side and there was less hard evidence to go on. I knew a few generations back his ancestors had served a church, “inside the castle” as grandpa put it. The problem is that there is not a church inside the castle, merely a chapel that would have been out of use by the time his grandfather was there.

The original section of Caernarfon is adjacent to the castle and still defended by a box of walls. The walls are medieval but most of the buildings inside them feel more like a town from the American Revolution. Built into the wall itself I found a boxy Norman church letting out of Sunday morning services. The church ladies saw

me and my camera so invited me in. Talking to them I learned that this church has served Caernarfon since it was built in the late 13th century and that it was the only church inside the walls, if my greatgreat-grandfather was a servant of the church then it would have been here.

In the end it was a very satisfying trip. It provided me with more insight on my family tree, let me walk some of the same roads and see the same places my ancestors must have. On the other hand it also gave me more questions to be answered about who these people were and how they lived and I also caught a quick glimpse of more places I’d like to visit more indepth if given the chance, more towns, more castles, more churches and more hills laden with even more sheep.

Carter emphasized that “abundant evidence” has convinced the international community to take these strong economic steps.

“My understanding is … that this is having a real effect on the Russian economy,” he said. “At some point, the Russian people are going to ask themselves whether these kinds of adventures are worth the price.”

Providing Options Regarding the nuclear situation in Iran, Carter said that while it’s not the Defense Department’s role to conduct those negotiations, there are two roles it does have.

“The first is to make sure that we have, as the president says, other options on the table,” he said.

“That’s something we take very seriously here, and we do have other options on the table.”

The second, Carter said, is to continue to play a stabilizing role in the region as a whole with all U.S. friends and allies while continuing to strengthen their capabilities and confidence.

Those are DoD’s two jobs, he said, and the department is very attentive to them.

“I’ve spoken with our partners in the State Department and other agencies, about working together in new ways and on new endeavors…”

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Basics From the Environmental Protection Agency

The most effective way to reduce waste is to not create it in the first place. Making a new product requires a lot of materials and energy: raw materials must be extracted from the earth, and the product must be fabricated and then transported to wherever it will be sold. As a result, reduction and reuse are the most effective ways you can save natural resources, protect the environment, and save money.

Benefits of Reducing and Reusing ● Prevents pollution caused by reducing the need to harvest new raw materials; ● Saves energy; ● Reduces greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change; ● Helps sustain the environment for future generations; ● Saves money; ● Reduces the amount of waste that will need to be recycled or sent to landfills and incinerators; ● Allows products to be used to their fullest extent.

Ideas on How to Reduce and Reuse ● Buy used. You can find everything from clothes to building materials at specialized reuse centers and consignment shops. Often, used items are less expensive and just as good as new. ● Look for products that use less packaging. When manufacturers make their products with less packaging, they use less raw material. This reduces waste and costs. These extra savings can be passed along to the consumer. Buying in bulk, for example, can reduce packaging and save money. ● Buy reusable over disposable items. Look for items that can be reused; the little things can add up. For example, you can bring your own silverware and cup to work, rather than using disposable items. ● Maintain and repair products, like clothing, tires, and appliances, so that they won’t have to be thrown out and replaced as frequently. ● Borrow, rent, or share items that are used infrequently, like party decorations, tools, or furniture.
