Dear NSA Friends and Families, As we approach 2016, it’s hard to believe 50 years have passed since Nansemond-Suffolk Academy was first established in 1966! In January, NSA will begin a year-long celebration of the school’s 50th anniversary! While 50 exciting years have passed, we are now planning for the next 50 years – how we can best prepare our students, and how we can best position NSA for the future. We firmly believe this begins with setting a standard of excellence in all that we do at NSA. We are all committed to not only helping our Head of School De students achieve their highest potential but also our school as a whole. borah B.

Russell

With this Gratitude Report, I am pleased to share with you that giving in support of NSA and our students is at an all-time high as evidenced by the funds raised through NSA’s Annual Fund, Capital Campaign and Special Events. In the last two years alone, NSA has secured over $6.8 million in pledges through our capital campaign, Our Saints. Our Future. An Investment in Excellence, which is the most for a capital campaign in the school’s 50-year history. Our success in fundraising is necessary to continue to move NSA forward and would not have been possible without each of you and your generous support. Because of each of you, NSA was able to implement the following initiatives: Faculty and Staff • Provided several external professional development opportunities for faculty and staff, created a new hire mentor program, developed professional growth plans and launched professional learning communities for faculty all in an effort to ensure our faculty and staff continue to grow, learn and implement best practices • Reinstated the employee retirement match Programs • Expanded the Sandra F. Birdsong Center for Academic Excellence to better serve the needs of all of our students and help each student reach his/her individual potential • Created the new science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) Innovation Lab, began implementing a STEM curriculum in Pre-K through Grade 12 and hired a former NASA employee to head the STEM program and Innovation Lab to ensure our students are developing 21st century skills • Implemented changes to our math curriculum in all divisions including new offerings in Middle School and Upper School as well as the adoption of a new math curriculum in Lower School for 2016-2017 • Introduced six new electives in the Upper School including Marine Biology, Sports Medicine, Introduction to Design (STEM course), Introduction to Statistics, Public Speaking and Conversational Spanish • Implemented a seven-day rotating schedule in Lower, Middle and Upper School based on the advice of industry experts from Independent School Management to enhance the student experience Capital Improvements and Strategic Initiatives • Broke ground on our new Lower School campus in Harbour View to capitalize on the growing market in the northern Suffolk communities and to serve as a feeder school for NSA’s main campus • Renovated the food service area and hired a new food service provider to improve the quality of food for everyone to enjoy at NSA • Installed a new sound system in the Thomas W. Johnson Gymnasium in the Beazley Center to enhance student, athletic and performing arts performances • Replaced the scoreboards on the soccer field and the Art Jones Athletic Field • Upgraded the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy website to make it easier to communicate with parents and to share the good news about NSA

“In NSA’s new STEM Innovation Lab, we are reinventing what is possible.”

I

n NSA’s new science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) Innovation Lab, we are reinventing what is possible. The lab was part of the school’s strategic plan and is being funded by the capital campaign. The STEM Innovation Lab inspires students in science, technology, engineering and math by synthesizing design and innovation opportunities throughout the curriculum. The project kicked off with NSA’s partnership with university professors who specialize in integrative STEM education to assist us with professional development, curriculum development, lab design and program evaluation. As a result, this year we began implementation of an exclusive STEM curriculum for students in Pre-K through Grade 12 that is woven into our existing science curriculum and an “Introduction to Design” course for Upper School students who wish to further develop their innovation, engineering, marketing and problem-solving skills. I love that the work in the STEM Innovation Lab engages all different types of learners, including those with tactual and visual strengths. Unlike many traditional classroom settings, the lab requires students to perform a variety of tasks where they work independently, as well as collaboratively. Experiences in this class are fluid and projects teach students the soft skills required for project- and problem-based learning like time management, communication, organization and collaboration. Much of what we do is cloud-based, as our students are constantly building their eportfolio to document their projects and evidence their learning. Students will use these eportfolios to demonstrate learning to future colleges and universities. Our state-of-the-art STEM Innovation Lab facilitates learning opportunities that extend students’ technical knowledge and skills. This lab is equipped with additive and subtractive manufacturing technologies, including five 3-D printers and a 3-D scanner, two laser cutters, an injection-molding machine, vacuum former, computer numerical controlled mill, lathe and router. In our lab, students develop ideas using computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce designs made of a variety of materials. In addition, industry experts from our community share with students product development opportunities, resources and trends in innovation. I am excited about continuing to develop our network of experts and weaving them into the fabric of our learning in the lab!

Michael Luzzatto ’16

Our STEM Innovation Lab truly sets NSA apart from other independent schools in Hampton Roads. But the lab does more than just make us unique – it’s a hub of daily activity for both students and faculty. Students come in to make, tinker and learn. It is filled all day long – with students in the “Introduction to Design” courses as well as others coming in during their free time. The spark of innovation has set upon NSA and the possibilities are truly endless. Elizabeth Joyner STEM Learning and Innovation Specialist

“Through our garden, we are growing more than just produce; we are growing young minds.”

Y

Mrs. Ann Davies

oung children love to play and explore – especially in the dirt! That’s why the second grade garden is such a hit with the students. They just can’t get enough of it! Our second grade garden was the brainchild of science instructor Cindy Mears. Through the garden our students observe plant life cycles, explore a variety of plants and learn about plants they’ve spotted on the salad bar, like lettuce and carrots. They also have the opportunity to eat the food we grow and share it with our school’s food service provider. The garden is a great vehicle for teaching multiple concepts in our curriculum. When we plant and harvest in the garden, we can incorporate everything from science to social studies, and writing to math into the experience. The children have even been able to incorporate the garden project into art class, making a sign to mark the garden. We practice our English skills through writing summaries in class about our observations of changes in our garden, and we study science while investigating the effects of the weather on our crops. The students also build valuable skills in teamwork and communication while gardening. Through the garden, they get hands-on learning about responsibility and patience, all while developing their sense of curiosity and problem-solving skills. It truly is a one-stop-shop for learning and a great tool to teach across the curriculum. Through our incorporation of more science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) into our curriculum, we look for additional ways to engage the students. This year, we will be creating weather instruments with the students, using the Tinkercad design program and 3-D printers in the STEM Innovation Lab. We want our students to realize that creativity knows no bounds and great ideas are conceived by combining creativity with critical thinking. As we’ve developed this new component of our curriculum, it has provided me the opportunity to gain new competencies as well. My job as an educator is to continue my own education so I can provide the latest tools and information the students need for the future. I am in the process of learning Tinkercad now and am so excited to share this knowledge with the students. I continue to learn with them daily. The second grade garden has been one of our greatest learning experiences yet. Our students are just as excited to go out and tend to the garden as they are to go to recess on the playground. In fact, on our way out to recess daily, we pass our garden and the kids pause to study the progress of the fruits and vegetables we are growing! They really love the tasting parties we host to enjoy the food from our harvest! While some children may be reluctant to eat our healthy vegetables – anything goes well with a little dab of ranch dressing! Through our garden, we are growing more than just produce; we are growing young minds. Ann Davies Lower School Second Grade Teacher

“Students truly take ownership of things when it comes from the creativity within their heart.”

G

ame Changer. That’s how I’d describe having the new science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) Innovation Lab at NSA. When I first learned that NSA planned to open an Innovation Lab, I knew immediately that the students in my Theatre Arts program would use it. And the kids just love it! In the Innovation Lab, our students are able to use new software and tools to design and build more elaborate props for our upcoming show, The Wizard of Oz. We no longer have to solely use flat props and now have special effects to enhance the performance – effects we could not simulate before. We will be creating spines for the flying monkeys using lily pad arduinos that will define and make their skeletal outline glow when they are flying during the performance. With our ability to use tools like the 3-D printer and laser cutter in the Innovation Lab, our Tin Man will actually have a heart that lights up and pulses, and Dorothy’s shoes will light up when she clicks her heels! It’s just amazing! I truly believe that the Theatre Arts program in a school is the ultimate assessment of a school’s curriculum. Theatre is one of the most powerful classes you can take as it encompasses everything taught in schools like physics through light and sound, math through the scenery design, English through dialogue analysis, foreign language through cultural references, history through time period research, music through the songs performed, psychology through character study and physical education through movement on the stage. Simply put, it encompasses it all.

Emma Butler ’17, and Colson Danneker ’16 Mrs. Oberdorfer

Since my arrival at NSA in 1985, I have watched the Theatre Arts program grow and thrive through the years. I have always had a passion for the arts and love teaching theatre arts, stage crafts and technical production classes. While I have spent many years at NSA, I truly believe that I must go into every school year with a renewed passion for what I am doing. I spend my summer learning and working on my passion – studying theatre, reading, researching and finding what’s new in the area in which I teach that I can bring to my students in the coming year. I ask myself what I can do this year that is new and fresh to stay on top of the skills that the kids will need today. I do this for the students to ensure they have the best learning experience possible each year, and our students deserve it. Students in the arts – whether they are on stage or behind the scenes – often find themselves and learn that they have something significant to contribute. They learn by doing and realize their contribution and creativity matters. Because of this, they own it. Students truly take ownership of things when it comes from the creativity within their heart. And when it comes from the heart of the students, it stays with them forever. Wanda Oberdorfer Upper School Theatre Arts and English Teacher

“…the Cultural Fair offers a great opportunity for interdisciplinary learning…”

W

e call ourselves a team. It’s just who we are and how we operate.

Collectively, we believe the seventh grade Cultural Fair offers a great opportunity for interdisciplinary learning and the encouragement of a global perspective and cultural understanding. The fair is the culminating event of an interdisciplinary unit based on studies of the cultures of Europe and Latin America. It is an opportunity for our students to gain knowledge of people, places, history and traditions that have shaped communities, our nation and the world. Students select a country and research topics including history, geography, economics and way of life. Specific cultural studies might include social customs, festivals, celebrations and cuisine. Through world geography class, students research and prepare foods native to their countries for the annual Food Festival. They also design and create a “souvenir” T-shirt to represent their country’s physical geography, and they research, design and create both an artifact and a costume that symbolizes the culture. Finally, they prepare a slideshow and a project board that displays pictures, maps, symbols and researched facts they have learned. Through math, students create comparative graphs to display facts about their country’s population, economy or oil consumption and then compare and contrast it to that in the United States. In science, students learn about organisms that live in their assigned country. The culminating science project this year will be to research, design and create an insect that is endemic to their respective country using the technology available through the science, technology, engineering and math Innovation Lab. In language arts students compose poems like Shakespearean sonnets about interesting physical and cultural features of their countries. While the same countries are studied year after year, the Cultural Fair is different annually because the seventh graders bring their own interests and put their personalities into their projects. The students really enjoy sharing what they learn during the fair itself, especially with the younger students when they visit the Cultural Fair. Students also like having the ability to direct their own learning within a developmentally appropriate and structured model which is also engaging and imaginative. Their achievement comes in the form of having a thorough understanding of the country they researched and their mastery of their chosen country is measured in alternative ways. There is truly something in this model for every student to be successful. At the beginning of their seventh grade year, the students have no idea how much they will learn through this project. But by the end of the year, the students are beaming with pride with all that they have created, learned and accomplished. Collaborating daily we solve problems, share philosophies about what is developmentally appropriate for students, and make adjustments to the program to ensure it is innovative and exciting. Together, we work to make a difference in the lives of our students each and every day.

“No two students learn the same way. The heart of the matter is that education is personal.”

N

o two students learn the same way. The heart of the matter is that education is personal. The strengths and unique gifts of every student must be embraced. We must inspire, challenge and encourage our students to reach their greatest potential both in the classroom and in life beyond NSA. The goal of the Sandra F. Birdsong Center for Academic Excellence is just that – to bring out the best in each student at NSA and help him or her to be the best they can be each and every day.

Serena Bush and Peyton Akers ’27

Funded by the TowneBank Foundation, the Sandra F. Birdsong Center for Academic Excellence provides customized strategies for students to achieve their full academic potential. This enhanced student learning is achieved through a strong partnership with the Sandra F. Birdsong Center for Academic Excellence and the faculty and staff whereby knowledge of learning differences and differentiated instruction are coupled with a student’s strengths, learning styles and interests to provide a customized learning process for each student. It is this customized approach that allows the Sandra F. Birdsong Center for Academic Excellence to truly maximize each student’s learning experience at NSA. In the past year, the Sandra F. Birdsong Center for Academic Excellence has grown to include opportunities for faculty development. NSA faculty members are now participating in professsional learning communities where they meet regularly to explore ways to invigorate and enhance classroom instruction. Action research completed by this group includes executive functioning skills, utilizing reading assessments to drive literacy instruction and student engagement. Twenty-first century skills such as cooperative learning, communication, critical thinking and problemsolving are also areas of focus for this group. Great teachers never stop learning, and our faculty members are students, too. For that reason, NSA implemented professional growth plans. Professional growth plans create a culture at NSA that promotes continuous learning for the faculty. The plans have been put in place to provide an opportunity for faculty to reflect on classroom practices that enable them to enhance their teaching and improve student achievement for all our students. To further support the faculty growth, a professional resource library has been added to the Sandra F. Birdsong Center for Academic Excellence. The Sandra F. Birdsong Center for Academic Excellence embraces the idea that students have similarities and differences in the way they learn. We celebrate these strengths, meet the students where they are, and help our Saints to be successful both at NSA and in life beyond the halls of our school.

WAY S O F G I V I N G T O N S A As an independent school, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy has derived all of its financial support from tuition and voluntary contributions by alumni, faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, friends, corporations and foundations since the Academy’s inception in 1966. Donors to NSA are provided with many opportunities to give to the school, whether the gift is to the Annual Fund to support program initiatives, the capital campaign to support our strategic goals or the Saints Society to help provide for the future.

Cash Gifts Most gifts made to NSA are in the form of cash, the most convenient way of giving. Such gifts are tax-deductible and are vital to the Paige Dowd ’25 support of NSA’s annual, capital and endowment needs. Credit cards (Mastercard and Visa) are accepted as well. You may also make your gift through the automatic debit of your bank account or through the NSA website at www.nsacademy.org (click on Support and Donate Now).

Gifts of Stock/Securities Securities are perhaps the best form of assets to use in making a charitable gift. When ownership of a security – which may result in a capital gain if sold – is transferred to NSA, you avoid substantial capital gains taxes and receive a charitable gift tax deduction for the fair market value of the security.

Legacy Gifts Legacy giving, also known as planned giving, provides an opportunity for donors to make provisions for the support of NSA through a deferred gift. Methods of legacy giving may be tailored to suit your needs and ways of giving may include: gifts through wills, charitable trusts, real estate, life insurance, bequests or life income agreements.

Matching Gifts Many companies will “match” a current or retired employee’s contribution to a non-profit organization. By taking advantage of your company’s matching gift benefit, your donation could be doubled. Please check with your employer to determine if your company supports matching gifts and to obtain the appropriate paperwork to submit with your gift. More than 500 companies match gifts to independent schools.

Other Gifts Gifts may be made in honor or in memory of an individual. Opportunities are also available for named gifts or special memorials to honor a family member, friend or loved one. Special gifts, donations directed toward a particular program, or need and gifts-in-kind are also accepted. We welcome inquiries about such gifts. Please visit our website to make a gift at www.nsacademy.org or mail donations to: Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, c/o Office of Advancement 3373 Pruden Boulevard, Suffolk, VA 23434

Celine Waddy ’26

Each year, NSA will continue to further our commitment to educational excellence.

If you have questions or need additional information, please contact the Office of Advancement at (757) 539-8789 ext. 3234.

Your investment in our students through your annual donations has a meaningful and lifelong impact on our Saints.

ANNUAL FUND The Annual Fund is one of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s top fundraising priorities. Donations to the Annual Fund help fund program initiatives, financial aid, professional development and the arts and athletics programs to support the mission of NSA. Annual Fund donations are comprised of unrestricted annual donations, gifts-in-kind, gifts made in memory or in honor of individuals, or gifts made in support of our events and affinity groups (Art Show & Sale, E@uction, Golf Tournament, Golden Saints Club or Royal Saints Club). Donations made by you to the NSA Annual Fund touch every student, every teacher, every family, every day and help advance the school.

Braedon McCauley ’21

Your financial contributions to NSA make you a part of a generous tradition of giving by alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, corporations, foundations and friends. Your support is extremely important to NSA because the corporations and foundations that support the Annual Fund often ask, “What percentage of your parents, faculty, alumni, grandparents or parents of alumni support your Annual Fund?” If the percentage of donors from the members of the NSA family is high, the foundation or corporation is more likely to approve our funding request. Gifts of any amount, large and small, are greatly appreciated.

FLEUR-DE-LIS SOCIETY What is the Fleur-de-Lis Society? Named for the school’s signature emblem, the Fleur-de-Lis Society salutes alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff, foundations, corporations and friends who provide leadership gifts of $1,000 or more to the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Annual Fund.

How Do I Become a Member of the Fleur-de-Lis Society?

PLANNED GIVING Saints Society The Saints Society was established in 1996 to honor generous alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends who have created trusts, bequests or other legacy gifts to benefit Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. All who provide for the future financial security of NSA with legacy gifts are eligible to become members of the Saints Society. Legacy giving, also known as planned giving, is a non-traditional way of making a gift to NSA and taking advantage of special tax-wise benefits as a result. Providing an opportunity for donors to make provisions for the support of NSA through a deferred gift, legacy giving may be tailored to suit your needs.

Donors qualify for membership by contributing $1,000 or more to the NansemondSuffolk Academy Annual Fund during the fiscal year (July 1 June 30).

A bequest intention or a planned gift of any size qualifies a donor for membership in the Saints Society. Methods are varied and may include: • life insurance • bequests • retirement plan assets • real estate • charitable lead trusts • charitable remainder trusts

What are the Recognition Levels and Opportunities? Each year, NSA will host a special event to honor Fleurde-Lis Society members. The Fleur-de-Lis Society donor Mallory Hobson ’16 appreciation event is held in the fall each year. Additionally, members will be recognized in the NSA Gratitude Report.

Membership in the Saints Society is a testament to a donor’s belief in the importance of providing a quality NSA education and perpetuates the donor’s legacy with the school. Funds generated from these gifts, large and small, help shape NSA’s academic programs, support outstanding teachers and enable talented and motivated students to attend the school. If establishing a legacy gift is of interest to you, please contact Kenda G. Council ’91, Director of Advancement, at (757) 539-8789 ext. 3339 or kcouncil@nsacademy.org to discuss your individual situation and wishes.

Donors who have made cumulative gifts to NSA through the years totaling over $10,000 are recognized on our cumulative giving plaque in the Upper School foyer. Should you have questions or need additional information, contact the Office of Advancement at 539-8789 ext. 3234 or visit the NSA website at www.nsacademy.org.
