elcome to the season that almost wasn’t, the season that kept changing almost daily.

But we made it, thanks in no small measure to our creative CEO Dave DePeters and the remarkable NRO team he has developed.

So once again, you have the opportunity to listen to world-class musicians in a world-class environment as the NRO continues to change lives through music: the lives of the musicians as they learn from our new Music Director Michael Stern, our guest conductors and artists, and Music Advisor Carl Topilow; the lives of young musicians in Summit County who are getting free music lessons thanks to NRO scholarships; and your life as the NRO presents one of the most diverse repertoires in its 61-year history. Enjoy broadening your musical perspective whether you attend the entire season in the Riverwalk Center or catch one of the many free performances throughout Summit County.

Each of us experiences music in a different way. But there is little doubt that music is good for the soul, can bring people of various backgrounds together, and can have a profound impact on our world. Helping the NRO in its efforts to accomplish its mission are my colleagues on the board of trustees; our generous donors; those folks who believe in the future of the NRO and have included the NRO in their estate plans; the supporters who have sponsored our concerts and events; and those who buy tickets to our performances.

We thank each of you and all of you, and we hope that, together, we can continue to build this magnificent orchestra for the future of music.

hat a difference a year makes!

The spring of 2020 was filled with angst, uncertainty, and cancellations of our favorite events.

The spring of 2021 is filled with hope, renewal, and the return of “fun stuff” – such as the NRO, one of my personal favorites.

The pandemic was long and difficult for all of us, but there are some positives that came out of our shared experience. You could get a real sense of our Breckenridge community as neighbors helped each other and businesses linked arms to keep each other afloat. There is also a renewed appreciation for our partner organizations.

The Family and Intercultural Resource Center (FIRC) and The Summit Foundation did some heavy lifting for Summit County.

The NRO provided much-needed musical relief in a smaller format. The Town of Breckenridge helped locals and businesses with rent relief and created a unique experience on Walkable Main.

It is a wonderful feeling to know that we have weathered the storm together.

It is also a genuine pleasure to welcome you back to Breckenridge for another season of the NRO. I would especially like to welcome the artists and say my personal thanks to the NRO staff for their perseverance during this last year.

elcome to the 2021 National Repertory Orchestra (NRO) summer music festival.

This season has been more than a year in the making, and we are excited you are with us. We are also proud to showcase the finest young professional musicians anywhere, and you will hear first-hand the talent, dedication and energy of these performers.

In addition to welcoming our musicians (who were originally planning to come to the 2020 music festival), we also welcome Michael Stern, NRO’s new Music Director and only the third in our 61-year history.

Michael has spent his life in devotion to preserving and expanding our beloved art form. As a music director, guest conductor, educator and musician, he possesses an accelerated vision of developing the 21st-Century musician.

Our commitment to education does not stop on the stage. The NRO pledged to be more involved in the education of our entire community as part of a five-year strategic plan.

We began by broadening our community engagement programs.

The initiative continued to grow even through last season’s COVID-19 restrictions by working with summer camps, daycares, libraries and adult education groups. We kept connected with our audiences and safely performed more than 50 live alumni string quartet concerts.

This summer, the orchestra may appear to look different. Yes, there are fewer musicians, but through the music we are performing, you will see the concerts will be no less exciting!

AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE Michael Altenberg Leadership Award

Outstanding Volunteer Of The Year Award

This award was created in honor of those individuals who have demonstrated exceptional foresight, fortitude and dedication to the NRO’s mission. The recipient sets a standard of patronage, volunteerism and financial support that few have achieved.

This award is given in recognition of outstanding service, dedication and support of the NRO.

Johanna Gibbs Johanna Gibbs serves on the NRO Board of Trustees and is a local host family for the NRO Community Link program.

“NRO plays a key role helping create the vibrant fabric of our community. I am proud to be a small part of supporting the magic of the orchestra,” said Gibbs. Her favorite part of her involvement with NRO is, “Sitting in the very back row of concerts with my two young children watching them twirl to the music.”

Rick Poppe Rick Poppe spent his career in the commercial construction business. Of the many Boards he has been on, Poppe shared that the highlight has been with the NRO. “Its mission of Changing Lives Through Music has become a passion,” said Poppe. “It touches so many people and has provided wonderful educational and career opportunities to young musicians over its 61-year history.”

This award is given annually to an individual or couple that demonstrates long-term exemplary support, not only of the NRO but many Summit County non-profit organizations.

This award is given in recognition of the unparalleled financial support of the NRO and other arts and cultural organizations in Summit County.

Sonny and Pam Wiegand

Barbara and Paul are long time Summit County residents. They found each other nine years ago after the deaths of their spouses. Too many charities to enumerate have benefited from their time and philanthropy.

NRO patrons have been greeted

by Barbara at the West Door for 15 years while Paul was head Saturday Night Usher for 20 years.

Sonny and Pam Wiegand have been homeowners in Summit County since 1996. Pam has been a longtime supporter of the Arts and is a member of the NRO Board of Trustees.

She has been on the Board on and off since the late 1990s, serving approximately 15 years.

Sonny has been legal counsel to the Board since 2003.

The Wiegands were part of Community Link program and have been NRO Sustainers for many years. Both were instrumental in the establishment of the NRO Endowment.

The Legacy Society was named in honor of Walter Charles, conductor and founder of the Blue Jeans Symphony Orchestra, later renamed the National Repertory Orchestra.

Harriett Bobo’s Transformational Gift Harriett Bobo’s love for music was contagious. Rarely did she miss an opportunity to attend a concert, masterclass, or seminar. Her desire to help others was even greater.

The notion that she could impact young musicians’ lives through education inspired her to participate, volunteer and contribute to the NRO every year while providing for a planned gift.

While Harriett surely never imagined passing away at age 75, she had in place an estate planning provision that proved to be transformational for the NRO. Her gift will not only continue Changing Lives Through Music! now and for future generations, it will also be her lasting legacy.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH The NRO is proud to offer more than 30 free, family-friendly music performances that are easily accessible, interactive and educational in the community this summer.

Each program is presented and created by NRO fellows, animating Summit County with engaging performances in neighborhoods, parks, plazas and on front porches for everyone to enjoy.

Steve & Pat Larson Artist In Residence Program For symphony orchestras to survive and thrive, musicians need to be advocates for classical music in all aspects of life, especially by being active and present in their communities.

During their summer fellowship, NRO musicians take part in the Community Engagement (CE) program led by Artist in Residence, Mary Javian. Ms. Javian is Chair of Career Studies at the Curtis Institute of Music and a leader in the CE field. Her teachings nurture social interaction, helping NRO musicians create innovative and experiential programming to connect with diverse audiences.

This season, additional studies will include a violin performance class by world-renowned violinist Midori and an entrepreneurship and workshop rehearsal with genre-breaking group Time for Three and composer Kevin Puts.

Community Engagement Develops 21st-Century Musicians “At the conclusion of NRO’s Community Engagement program, I reported directly to a new job as an aural skills instructor for a public university in rural Oklahoma. The skills I practiced in NRO’s Community Engagement program could not have been more relevant. My classes are made up of primarily first-generation college students from small towns with little to no access to classical music institutions.

In my teaching, I hope to equip my students with the confidence, critical thinking, and vulnerability to have a meaningful experience with any type of music or performance. This does not require a lifetime of concert subscriptions or vast knowledge of the Canon.

At NRO, I saw that the difference between a foreign experience and a meaningful experience came down to a few simple concepts and practices: Introducing myself and a program with humility and respect for the audience, validating the audience’s individual musical experience, and performing with integrity and mindfulness.”

CONDUCTORS MICHAEL STERN, Music Director

C

onductor Michael Stern is Music Director of the Kansas City Symphony, Founding Artistic Director, and Principal Conductor of the Iris Orchestra and recently named Music Director of the Stamford Symphony in Connecticut and The National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, Colorado.

Michael Stern and Kansas City have been hailed for their remarkable artistic ascent, original programming, organizational development and stability, and the extraordinary growth of its varied audiences since his tenure began. Stern and the orchestra have partnered with Grammy® Award-winning Reference Recordings for a series of very well-received CDs, including a new recording of works by American composer Adam Schoenberg, Gustav Holst’s “The Planets,” and albums of Elgar, Sibelius, and Saint-Saens.

Iris Orchestra in Germantown, Tennessee is known for the virtuosity of its playing, and the depth and variety of its programming, with special emphasis on American contemporary music.

Under Stern’s direction, IRIS has commissioned and premiered works

by William Bolcom, Chris Brubeck, Richard Danielpour, Stephen Hartke, Edgar Meyer, Jonathan Leshnoff, Ned Rorem, Huang Ruo, amongst others, and has released recordings on the Naxos and Arabesque labels.

Recent guest engagements have included the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood, the Chicago Symphony at Ravinia, the Atlanta Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic in the film score to The Red Violin with Joshua Bell as soloist; also, with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Ravinia, and the Napa Valley Festival del Sole, as well as concerts at the Stern Violin Competition in Shanghai.

Annually he conducts the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra as part of the Youth Music Culture Guangdong with Yo-Yo Ma and regularly appears at the Aspen Music Festival and School.

He has led the major orchestras in London, Stockholm, Paris, Helsinki, Budapest, Israel, and Moscow, Taiwan, and Tokyo, et al.

Stern has been Chief Conductor of Germany’s Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra (the first American chief conductor in the orchestra’s history), Permanent Guest Conductor of the Orchestre National de Lyon in France, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestre National de Lille, France.

Stern is the third Music Director in the NRO’s 61-year history.

CONDUCTORS CARL TOPILOW, Music Advisor

T

hrough his more than four decades as the NRO’s Music Director and Conductor, Carl Topilow has influenced and nurtured countless young musicians and aspiring conductors. In his new role as Music Advisor, he is remaining active with the organization, and is looking forward to his work with Music Director Michael Stern and to the orchestra returning once again to the stage of the Riverwalk Center!

Topilow is the founding Conductor of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, and Music Director and Conductor of the Firelands Symphony Orchestra in Sandusky, Ohio. Past positions have included Conductor and Director of the Orchestral Program at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and Principal Pops Conductor with the Toledo Symphony, Southwest Florida Symphony and Mansfield Symphony.

He has served as Guest Conductor for 125 different orchestras in 37 states and 12 foreign countries, invariably finding NRO alumni wherever his travels take him.

Carl’s new book, The Orchestral Conductor’s Career Handbook and published by Rowman and Littlefield, is now available.

Containing abundant references to his work with the NRO, it has been endorsed by past NRO Guest Gonductors Leonard Slatkin, JoAnn Falletta, Gerard Schwarz, Giancarlo Guerrero, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, and others.

Topilow’s wife Shirley is the President and CEO of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra. Their daughter Jenny, an NRO alumna from the 2001 and 2003 seasons, is a violinist with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Their daughter Emily is working in marketing, pursuing a master’s degree in communications, and performs as violinist with a local community orchestra. J

ason Seber is the David T. Beals III Assistant Conductor of the Kansas City Symphony. He is celebrating his fifth year with the Kansas City Symphony, beginning as Assistant Conductor in the 2016-17 season, and as Associate Conductor starting in the 2017-18 season. In this position he has built a strong rapport with the Kansas City community, leading the Symphony in over 70 concerts each season on the Classics Uncorked, Pops, Family, Film + Live Orchestra, Young People’s Concerts, KinderKonzerts, and Link Up series, as well as Christmas Festival, Symphony in the Flint Hills, and many other programs. In October 2019, he made his debut on the Classical Series and recently led another Classical Series program in the spring of 2021. He also serves as a co-host for the Symphony’s podcast, “Beethoven Walks into a Bar.” Prior to his appointment with the Kansas City Symphony, Seber served as Education and Outreach Conductor of the Louisville Orchestra from 2013 to 2016 and Music Director of the Louisville Youth Orchestra from 2005 to 2016. He has also served as Assistant Conductor of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra and the National Repertory Orchestra. Seber has guest conducted many leading North American orchestras, including the Charleston Symphony, Cleveland Pops, Colorado Symphony, Houston Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, National Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, and the Windsor Symphony.

A passionate advocate of music education, Seber conducted the 2019 National Repertory Orchestra at concerts in Breckenridge and as part of the Bravo! Vail Music Festival. He returns to lead the NRO in July 2021. He has led the Honors Performance Series Orchestra in performances at Royal Festival Hall in London (2019), Carnegie Hall (2018), and the Sydney Opera House (2017). In November 2019 he led the APAC Honors Festival Orchestra in Seoul, South Korea. He served as the Missouri All-State Orchestra Conductor in 2020 and will be the Pennsylvania All-State Conductor in 2022.

Seber has performed with classical artists Jinjoo Cho, Paul Jacobs, Conrad Tao, and Joyce Yang, and a diverse range of pops artists including Patti Austin, Andrew Bird, Boyz II Men, Melissa Etheridge, Ben Folds, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Lyle Lovett, Brian Stokes Mitchell, My Morning Jacket, Leslie Odom, Jr., Aoife O’Donovan, Pink Martini, Doc Severinsen, Bobby Watson, and Wynonna. He earned his master’s degree in orchestral conducting from the Cleveland Institute of Music and his bachelor’s degrees in violin performance and music education from Baldwin Wallace University.

idori is a visionary artist, activist and educator who explores and builds connections between music and the human experience and breaks with traditional boundaries which makes her one of the most outstanding violinists of our time.

As a leading concert violinist for over 35 years, Midori regularly transfixes audiences around the world, bringing together graceful precision and intimate expression. She has performed with, among others, the London, Chicago, and San Francisco Symphony Orchestras, the Sinfonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. She has collaborated with such outstanding musicians as Claudio Abbado, Emanuel Ax, Leonard Bernstein, Jonathan Biss, Constantinos Carydis, Christoph Eschenbach, Daniel Harding, Paavo Järvi, Mariss Jansons, Yo-Yo Ma, Susanna Mälkki, Joana Mallwitz, Antonello Manacorda, Zubin Mehta, Donald Runnicles, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Omer Meir Wellber.

Midori’s latest recording with the Festival Strings Lucerne of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and two Romances was released in October 2020 by Warner Classics. Her diverse discography by Sony Cassical, Ondine and Onyx includes recordings of Bloch, Janáček and Shostakovich and a Grammy Award-winning recording of Hindemith’s Violin Concerto with Christoph Eschenbach conducting the NDR Symphony Orchestra as well as Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin filmed at Köthen Castle, which was recorded also for DVD (Accentus).

Midori was born in Osaka in 1971 and began her violin studies with her mother, Setsu Goto at an early age. In 1982, conductor Zubin Mehta invited the then 11-year-old Midori to perform with the New York Philharmonic in the orchestra’s annual New Year’s Eve concert, where the foundation was laid for her following career.

Midori plays the 1734 Guarnerius del Gesù ‘ex-Huberman’.

She uses four bows – two by Dominique Peccatte, one by François Peccatte and one by Paul Siefried.

by Charles Chaplin 1918 Synopsis of A Dog’s Life: The Little Tramp finds companionship with two fellow outcasts - Scraps, a stray mongrel, and a young girl exploited as a hostess in a disreputable dive, The Green Lantern. With Scraps’ help he overcomes two thieves from whom he wins a well-filled wallet, which provides the three with a happy end together.

Synopsis of Shoulder Arms: Charlie is recruited to the “awkward squad”. Posted to the front line in France, he encounters all the privations of trench life – snipers, flood, food rations, solitude, lice and other vermin.

He meets a French girl, whom he subsequently rescues from the German troops. After assuming a series of disguises, he manages to hijack the German Kaiser along with the Crown Prince and General von Hindenburg … but then wakes up, still in the “awkward squad”.
