WELCOME

W

elcome to the NRO 2018 season!

Things are off to a very busy start.

We have had an event filled spring with our Winter Series, including the Dali Quartet in conjunction with FIRC and our local schools, the Elizabeth Hainen program at the Gold Pan, and Masontown at Napper Tandy’s. Our regular season is also full of many exciting programs with a fun mid-summer focus on themes around the Wizard of Oz. Of the some 900 musicians who have auditioned to be part of this seasons orchestra, 89 have been selected by Maestro Carl Topilow and will be working to bring their best skills to each performance.

Our new CEO, Dave DePeters, is starting his second year and is bringing lots of energy and creativity. In addition to our regular symphonic series at the Riverwalk Center, the NRO will be performing another 40 times throughout Summit County, including our July 4th patriotic concert at Rainbow Park in Silverthorne and a performance at Lake Dillon Amphitheater.

This exciting schedule happens because of the work of our full time staff as well as the seasonal fellows and staff.

As always, this wonderful summer festival wouldn’t be possible without the continuing support of the Town of Breckenridge, our many donors and volunteers, and the thousands of patrons who buy tickets and participate in our performances. As we enter into our 25th season of performing at the Riverwalk Center, everyone is looking forward to an entertaining and exciting time.

E

very summer since 1993, the Town of Breckenridge has been honored to partner with the National Repertory Orchestra (NRO) by providing the Riverwalk Center. The NRO gathers 89 of the country’s best and brightest young musicians here for an eight-week residency filled with a full concert season and training to help them become professional musicians. They will go on to perform in major orchestras around the world, and we are fortunate to see them here first!

Breckenridge has numerous activities and attractions that make our 159-year-old “Real Town” unique. A great place to start your exploration is our Welcome Center in the heart of one of Colorado’s largest historic districts. It showcases our vibrant history as well as highlights where we’re headed, and is a great place to plan your time here.

Take a stroll down our historic Main Street.

Feel the vibrant spirit of eclectic boutiques, relax in a cozy café, or explore our emerging Arts District and discover this hub of art, culture and music. The Riverwalk Center graces the western side and the newly expanded Breckenridge Theater anchors the eastern border of our bustling ‘arts campus’. In between, discover your ‘artful’ side in a variety of renovated, historical buildings and unique open spaces that host a wide variety of workshops and events.

Even after 30 years of calling Breckenridge home, I have yet to exhaust all that this special place has to offer. Thank you for your support of the National Repertory Orchestra and enjoy the performance.

This summer we celebrate 25 years in Breckenridge and 32 years in Summit County. I’d like to thank the Town of Breckenridge, BreckCreate, all the businesses and individuals, and our fantastic artistic partners for making Breckenridge such a vital and important arts community.

This season, in addition to our regular Riverwalk concerts, we will be performing a number of small ensemble concerts throughout Summit County. I invite you to attend these free, family friendly events, many of which will include historic and artistic docents.

The musicians on stage represent the very best of our next generation of classical musicians. They have gone through an arduous process and now, in Summit County, each musician will be trained on, and perform an incredible array of music. The amount of music each musician will learn, at the highest level, will be life changing for them – and awe-inspiring for those of us lucky enough to be present.

By the time our NRO Fellows are finished they will know what it is like to perform in a professional ensemble and be prepared to make the next step in their musical journey.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH Education and Community Engagement Outreach Programs

Steve and Pat Larson Professional Artists In Residence Program

The National Repertory Orchestra is first and foremost an educational, nonprofit organization that creates win-win opportunities for our local community, the attending musicians and the audience. Through the universal language of music, we inspire young children with free library and classroom performances, mentor aspiring musicians from across the country to pursue musical careers, provide the residents and visitors of Summit County with high-caliber performances and free community outreach events throughout June and July.

The Professional Artists in Residence program is a mentorship program for aspiring musicians. This year, eight renowned professional musicians will join the NRO to provide the attending musicians with intensive, hands-on, directed and personal interaction on their instrument. During June and July, the Professional Artists in Residence will work with 89 NRO musicians to also provide career guidance, mentorship, and networking opportunities.

The Professional Artists in Residence will conduct master classes, perform alongside the musicians in training, hold seminars and mock auditions, offer career development advice, participate in panel discussions, and lead outreach performances that will engage our local and neighboring communities.

The purpose of the Professional Artists in Residence program is to provide an exceptional mentorship program for aspiring musicians to pursue their dreams as professional musicians and ultimately land gainful employment with esteemed professional orchestras throughout the world.

AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE The Michael Altenberg Leadership Award & Blue River Bistro Dinner Honoree This Award was created to honor those individuals who have demonstrated exceptional foresight, fortitude and dedication in support of the National Repertory Orchestra. The recipients of this annual award set a standard of patronage, volunteerism and financial support that few have achieved.

SANDY MORTENSEN Sandy moved to Summit County in 1977.

Volunteering began immediately, helping in the schools, and serving on many boards in Summit County. She also participated in raising money for numerous projects in the new Dillon Valley Elementary School, the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge and Colorado Mountain College’s new building.

When the National Repertory Orchestra moved to Keystone, she rarely missed a concert. In 1997 Nancy Follett invited her to join the NRO Board and she was elected president in 2004 and 2005. In 2006 she and three fellow past NRO board members established the Sustainers of the NRO. This group continues to support the NRO with Sandy as the chair. Through the years she served on numerous other boards in the county.

In 1991 she joined the Summit Rotary club, served as chair of their charitable fund, was president 2007-08, and is currently District Governor 2018-19 for Rotary District 5450.

Born in New Jersey and raised in Denver and New Jersey, Sandy is the mother of four grown children and has five grandchildren. She graduated with a degree in physical therapy from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI. Before retiring in 2001, she operated four Physical Therapy clinics. Skiing in the winter, hiking and golf in the summer keeps her active. Reading and traveling fill in the gaps. Since August, 2002 Sandy has been happily living with Lou Wagner, fellow Rotarian and supporter of the NRO.

Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award The Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award is given in recognition of outstanding service, dedication and support of the National Repertory Orchestra.

TOM RADER

Outstanding Community Service Award The Outstanding Community Service Award is given annually to an individual or couple that demonstrate long-term exemplary support, not only of the NRO but many Summit County non-profit organizations.

JACK THOMAS Jack Thomas has had a life-long interest in music and expressed it as a performer, but mostly as a fan and supporter. He studied voice from grade school thru college, singing as a soloist in the Notre Dame Glee Club; later in groups while serving in the Marine Corps and finally in churches, choral groups and Barbershop while living in Minneapolis. His business career in investments was capped when he became the president of a large mutual fund group.

Jack (and Pat, his recently deceased wife) have been part time residents of Summit County for over 30 years and have supported numerous local charities, especially the BMF and the NRO. They were named Dr. Oliver Stonington Outstanding Philanthropists in 2013 by the Summit Foundation.

Robin Hadley Philanthropy Award The Robin Hadley Philanthropy Award is given in recognition of unparalleled financial support of the NRO as well as other arts and cultural organizations in Summit County.

CYNTHIA & BOB BENSON Cynthia and Bob’s connection with the NRO goes back to 1981 in Evergreen. Bob served on the Board, for a couple years as its president, but what they most remember is hosting numerous post-concert parties for regular groups of 6-8 musicians. Many of those musicians, now in major orchestras, remain friends.

In recent years, Bob and Cynthia, through a family foundation, have remained steady supporters of the goal of keeping the high quality and the number of NRO guest conductors. Exposure to a diversity of styles, expectations, and preferences is an important part of getting ready for life in a professional orchestra according to Bob and Cynthia.

Tom was President of the NRO in 1992. He led the team that saved the Orchestra from financial hardship and moved it from Keystone to Breckenridge. “As always with the NRO, a great board and generous donors made it all possible.

It continues to be the most rewarding event of my career,” Tom reports. Tom and Ann are retired and live in the Vail Valley.

CONDUCTORS Carl Topilow, Music Director For more than four decades, Music Director and Conductor Carl Topilow has influenced the sound of American orchestras through his work as conductor of the National Repertory Orchestra and with the orchestras at the Cleveland Institute of Music. It is estimated he has heard close to 40,000 auditions and has given thoughtful feedback to each person. His continuous commitment to the quality of orchestral playing is demonstrated by the results. His students may be found as orchestra and faculty members throughout the United States and abroad.

Topilow is the founding conductor of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, and music director and conductor of the Firelands Symphony Orchestra in Sandusky, Ohio. Past positions have included conductor and director of the orchestral program at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and principal pops conductor with the Toledo Symphony, Southwest Florida Symphony and Mansfield Symphony.

He has served as guest conductor for more than 120 orchestras in 37 states and 12 foreign countries, invariably finding NRO alumni wherever his travels take him.

Topilow’s wife Shirley is the Director of the Morgenstern Dance Studio and President and CEO of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra. Their daughter Jenny, an NRO alumna from the 2001 and 2003 seasons, is a member of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. This fall, their daughter Emily will be starting her senior year at Bowling Green State University (OH) where she studies psychology and marketing and performs as a violinist with the university orchestra. Carl’s hobbies include reading, foreign languages, traveling, golf, and especially enjoys his time with his two grandchildren, Edie and Arlo.

Mark Alpizar, Assistant Conductor, July 11th & 18th Southern California native, Mark Alpizar, enjoys a multifaceted and entrepreneurial career as a conductor, clarinetist, and music educator.

As a conductor, he has worked with ensembles of all ranges and abilities. From 2013 to 2015, he was the assistant conductor for the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra. During this time, Mr. Alpizar also conducted the Collegium Musicum at the Cole Conservatory of Music at Cal State Long Beach.

In addition to his professional engagements, Alpizar remains committed to music education. Since 2012, he has been the music director of the Four Seasons Youth Orchestra in Orange County, California. During his tenure, the orchestra has performed an unprecedented amount of new music and premiered a dozen new works. One of their

most ambitious seasons included the Grammy-nominated Calling All Dawns from Civilizations 4 and the world premiere of Luke Hannington’s comic opera, The Inferiority Complex of Old Sippy. Alpizar has frequently conducted the South Coast Youth Symphony Orchestra since 2008.

Between the two groups he has played two concertos, performed in Segerstrom and Walt Disney Concert Halls, and completed performance tours to England, Wales, Ireland, Spain, Greece, New York, and Sydney.

Alpizar currently resides in Phoenix while pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in orchestral conducting at Arizona State University where he studies with Jeffery Meyer and Tito Muñoz. Since moving to Phoenix, he has commissioned new works for the ASU Symphony, conducted a mainstage opera, and has conducted both The Phoenix Youth Symphony and the East Valley Youth Symphony.

CONDUCTORS Marcelo Lehninger, June 20th

JoAnn Falletta, June 27th

Brazilian-born Marcelo Lehninger is in his second year as Music Director of the Grand Rapids Symphony. He previously served as Music Director of the New West Symphony in Los Angeles, for which the League of American Orchestras awarded him the Helen H. Thompson Award for Emerging Music Directors.

Marcelo was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra by James Levine, and, after a very successful two year tenure that included stepping in for Maestro Levine on short notice in Boston and on tour at Carnegie Hall, was later promoted to Associate Conductor.

Mr. Lehninger’s 2017-18 season includes his debut with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, and a return to the Slovenian Philharmonic, which he leads on tour to Vienna.

Closer to home, Mr. Lehninger debuts with the Charlotte and Tucson Symphonies, and returns to the North Carolina Symphony and Rochester Philharmonic. He returns to Carnegie Hall with the Grand Rapids Symphony, the orchestra’s first performance at the famed venue in thirteen years.

Chosen by Kurt Masur in 2008, Mr. Lehninger was awarded the First Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Scholarship sponsored by the American Friends of the Mendelssohn Foundation. He was Maestro Masur’s assistant with the Orchestre National de France (during their residency at the Musikverein in Vienna), Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, and the New York Philharmonic. In 2011, he participated in the Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview, organized by the League of American Orchestras, conducting the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, and debuted with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center as part of the National Conducting Institute in 2007.

JoAnn Falletta is internationally celebrated as a vibrant ambassador for music, an inspiring artistic leader, and a champion of American symphonic music. She serves as the Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Brevard Music Center.

Ms. Falletta has guest conducted over a hundred orchestras in North America, and many of the most prominent orchestras in Europe, Asia, South America and Africa. In 2018-19 she will guest conduct orchestras in the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden and across the US. A strong advocate and mentor for young professional and student musicians, she recently adjudicated the prestigious Malko Conducting Competition in Denmark.

She has served as a Member of the National Council on the Arts, is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is the recipient of many of the most prestigious conducting awards. She has introduced over 500 works by American composers, including well over 100 world premieres.

JoAnn is a leading recording artist for Naxos. Her discs have won two Grammy Awards and ten Grammy nominations. Upon her appointment as Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic, Falletta became the first woman to lead a major America ensemble. She has since been credited with bringing the Philharmonic to a new level of national and international prominence.

CONDUCTORS Michael Stern, June 30th Conductor Michael Stern is Music Director of the Kansas City Symphony and the Founding Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the IRIS Orchestra.

Stern and Kansas City have been hailed for their remarkable artistic ascent, original programming, and the extraordinary growth of its varied audiences. Stern and the orchestra have partnered with Reference Recordings in an ongoing series of well received CDs. Two new releases are a disc of new works by American composer Adam Schoenberg, and Gustav Holst’s “The Planets.”

Radu Marian Paponiu, July 11th & 12th Born in Romania in 1989, conductor and violinist Radu Marian Paponiu began studying the violin at age seven, moving on to study privately with Carmen Runceanu and Stefan Gheorghiu. After coming to the United States at the invitation of the Perlman Music Program, Radu completed two degrees in violin performance at the Colburn School Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles. Beginning his conducting studies with Maxim Eshkenazy and continuing with Yehuda Gilad and Alexander Treger, Radu was appointed Assistant Conductor of the American Youth Symphony in the spring of 2011. Additionally, during his time in Los Angeles, Radu frequently conducted the Colburn Conservatory

Stern’s IRIS Orchestra in Germantown, Tennessee is a leader in innovative programming, with special emphasis on American contemporary music. Under Stern’s direction, IRIS has commissioned and premiered works by William Bolcom, Richard Danielpour, Stephen Hartke, Jonathan Leshnoff, Huang Ruo, and Adam Schoenberg, amongst others.

Michael Stern has conducted the Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Cincinnati, Houston, Indianapolis, National, Montreal, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Seattle and Boston symphonies, the Cleveland and Philadelphia orchestras, as well as the New York Philharmonic. He also has appeared regularly at the Aspen Music Festival and has served on faculty there.

He has conducted in London, Stockholm, Paris, Helsinki, Budapest, Israel, Moscow, Taiwan, and Tokyo, and has held permanent posts with the orchestras in Saarbrücken, the Orchestre National de Lyon, and the Orchestre National de Lille.

Orchestra, Colburn Chamber Orchestra, Colburn Youth Orchestra, and the Colburn Contemporary Players. These performances included collaborations with Robert Levin, John Perry, and the Ebène String Quartet. For two consecutive summers, Radu participated in the prestigious American Academy of Conducting at Aspen, where he furthered his studies under the guidance of Robert Spano, Larry Rachleff, Leonard Slatkin, Patrick Summers and Frederico Cortese.

Radu recently completed his Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting at the New England Conservatory in Boston, working privately with Hugh Wolff. While in Boston, Radu was also a Conductor Apprentice with the Handel&Haydn Society. Since the fall of 2016, Radu divides his time between Boston and New York, where he serves on the conducting faculty for the Juilliard Pre-College Division. Radu served as assistant conductor of the National Repertory Orchestra during the 2017 season.

Carl St. Clair, July 25th Music Director of the Pacific Symphony for nearly three decades, Carl St. Clair has become widely recognized for his musically distinguished performances, innovative programming, and commitment to outstanding educational projects.

The largest ensemble formed in the United States during the last fifty years, the Pacific Symphony’s rapid artistic development is due largely to Mr. St. Clair’s leadership. In April 2018, he led the Symphony in its Carnegie Hall debut, as the finale to the Hall’s year-long celebration of pre-eminent composer Philip Glass’s 80 th birthday.

In 2014, Mr. St. Clair was named Music Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Costa Rica, and the following year celebrated the orchestra’s 75th anniversary season by performing concerts throughout the country in all seven provinces.

An active guest conductor, Carl St. Clair has led the Boston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and the symphonies of Atlanta, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Montreal, Nashville, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, and Vancouver, to name a few. Worldwide, he has conducted orchestras in Europe, South America, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, and Taiwan. Highlights of the 2017/2018 season also include engagements with the Hawaii Symphony, Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra/Germany, and an Asia tour with the Pacific Symphony. Festival appearances include Schleswig-Holstein, Pacific (Japan), Round Top, Breckenridge, Wintergreen (Virginia), Tanglewood, and the Texas Music Festival/ Houston.

In higher education, he has had a continuing relationship with the USC Thornton School of Music for over 20 years. In 2012, he took on the expanded role as artistic leader and principal conductor of the USC Thornton orchestras.

GUEST ARTISTS Orion Weiss, June 27th One of the most sought-after soloists in his generation of young American musicians, the pianist Orion Weiss has performed with the major American orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and New York Philharmonic. His deeply felt and exceptionally crafted performances go far beyond his technical mastery and have won him worldwide acclaim.

His 2017-18 season sees him opening the season for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra performing Beethoven’s Triple Concerto and ending his season with the Colorado Symphony and Mozart’s majestic Concerto in C major, K. 467; in between Orion will play with eleven orchestras, go on a recital tour with James

Ehnes, and perform chamber music around the country. His 2016-17 season also featured collaborative projects, including those with the Pacifica Quartet and with Cho-Liang Lin and the New Orford String Quartet in a performance of the Chausson Concerto. Other highlights of recent seasons include his third performance with the Chicago Symphony, a North American tour with the world-famous Salzburg Marionette Theater in a performance of Debussy’s La Boîte à Joujoux, the release of his recording of Christopher Rouse’s Seeing, and recordings of the complete Gershwin works for piano and orchestra with his longtime collaborators the Buffalo Philharmonic and JoAnn Falletta.

Named the Classical Recording Foundation’s Young Artist of the Year in 2010, Mr. Weiss made his debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood in 2011 as a last-minute replacement for Leon Fleisher.

In 2004, he graduated from The Juilliard School, where he studied with Emanuel Ax.

Chris Deviney, June 30th Since 2003, Chris Deviney has been the Principal Percussionist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Prior to assuming this title, Mr. Deviney was Section Percussionist with the Houston Symphony. He has also previously performed and recorded with the New Orleans Symphony, Toronto Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Atlanta Symphony, Kansas City Symphony and Philadelphia Orchestra.

In 2008, Mr. Deviney appeared as a co-soloist (along with timpanist Don Liuzzi) with the Philadelphia Orchestra performing Bartok’s Concerto for 2 Pianos and Percussion with Emmanuel Ax. In 2017, he premiered his Duo-Percussion Concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra alongside friend and colleague She-e Wu.

He was a faculty member at Rutgers University from 2004-2008, was the Percussion Coordinator at the Curtis Institute from 2008-2009 and since 2010 has taught the Graduate Percussion program at Temple University. In 2012, 2014 & 2016 he performed as Principal Percussionist in the acclaimed PBS broadcast production “All-Star Orchestra” with conductor Gerard Schwarz.

Mr. Deviney is a graduate of the Florida State University (under Gary Werdesheim) and Temple University (under Alan Abel). He was the recipient of the first Charles Owen Memorial fellowship to the Aspen Music Festival as well as a Tanglewood Institute Fellow and National Repertory Orchestra invitee. He has given multiple masterclasses at the New World Symphony, the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, the National Youth Orchestra and has been a featured guest lecturer at the University of Michigan.

He is a proud endorser of Pearl/Adams Percussion instruments, Evans drumheads, Innovative Percussion sticks/mallets and Sabian cymbals.

She-e Wu, June 30th She-e Wu’s 2017-18 season features recitals, concert series, and extensive tours in Europe, Asia, and U.S. She begins her European tour in UK, France, Finland, Hungary, then Taiwan, China and South Korea and Australia. She-e premiered “Imaginary Day”, a duo concerto with Chris Deviney by Pat Metheny, with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2017; also appeared as a solo artist at Percussive Arts Society International Convention; Bach Symposium/Variation Festival in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center; Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Carnegie Hall; Chicago Chamber Musicians and numerous festivals,

universities and conservatories throughout the world. Ms. Wu has composed many works for percussion, released solo, chamber (with American Brass Quintet, Gail Williams), concerto recordings (Sejong Soloist), commissioned new works for percussion (Paul Lansky, Lee Hyla, Dafnis Prieto and etc), participated and hosted numerous summer workshops and seminars; design mallets for Innovative Percussion; design instruments for Majestic as a consultant, and served as a member on the jury for various international percussion competitions worldwide.

Ms. Wu is the director of percussion program at Northwestern University, and a frequent guest artist teacher at the Royal College of Music.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Griggio studied with violinist Daniel Robuschi, and later, with the soloist Ivan Zenaty, at the Cleveland Institute of Music [CIM]. Among his most notable milestones, Pablo performed as a soloist with the CIM Orchestra, the NRO (2014), and several times with the Buenos Aires Academic Orchestra. He regularly performs at the most popular concert cycles in Argentina and has attended over ten international music festivals in the Americas and Europe.

Katelyn Lyons is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music where she earned a dual master’s degree in violin performance and Suzuki Pedagogy. She also earned her bachelor’s there in violin performance, studying with William Preucil and Stephen Rose. Katelyn is a first violinist in the Canton Symphony Orchestra and performs regularly with the Akron Symphony and the Firelands Symphony.

This is Katelyn’s third summer at NRO and she looks forward to frequent hikes!

Originally from Los Angeles, California, Mina Hong holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Southern California. Currently, she is pursuing her Master of Music at the University of Michigan under the tutelage of David Halen. Her former teachers include Margaret Batjer and Danielle Belen. She has attended both the Aspen Music Festival and the Great Mountains Music Festival. Recent engagements included a collaboration with violinist, James Ehnes, at the Colburn School.

Originally from Indianapolis, violinist Sarah Page moved to Cleveland in 2015 to join the studio of William Preucil at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she graduated with a Master of Music in violin performance. Sarah has enjoyed a diverse musical career as a soloist performing at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, 2nd violin of the Kalos Quartet, a member of the Canton Symphony Orchestra, and a teacher through El Sistema at the Rainey Institute.

Katherine recently completed her master’s degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with Stephen Rose. She previously received a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music with Grigory Kalinovsky. Katherine has performed regularly with the Akron Symphony, Canton Symphony, Firelands Symphony, and Richmond Symphony Orchestra. This is her second summer with the National Repertory Orchestra and she will be moving to Miami this fall to join the New World Symphony.

Originally from Philadelphia, Katherine began playing violin at age ten and made her solo debut at age fifteen with the Ocean City Pops Orchestra. In addition to freelancing in the South Florida area, Katherine’s quartet won first prize in the 2016 Lyric Chamber Music competition. After completing her bachelor’s at DePaul in Chicago with Ilya Kaler, she is currently pursuing a Certificate with Elmar Oliveira at the Lynn Conservatory, where she received her master’s degree.

Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, Sydney Adedamola graduated in May from the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music where she studied with Dr. Lina Bahn. During her time in Los Angeles, she was a member of the Young Musician Foundation’s Debut Chamber Orchestra and performed in master classes taught by various distinguished musicians including Midori Goto, Paul Watkins, Lawrence Dutton, Ian Swensen and Michael Tree. Outside of the violin, her passions include songwriting and poetry.

Boston-native Sophia Bernitz recently completed her Master of Music at NEC studying with Kris Tong. She earned her BM from Oberlin Conservatory in both violin and viola studying with David Bowlin and Peter Slowik. Sophia has performed as a member of the Boston Philharmonic, as well as a substitute with the Charleston Symphony. Most recently, Sophia attended Spoleto Festival. Outside of music, she enjoys reading, doing jigsaw puzzles and hanging out with dogs.

A Rhode Island native, Julia began playing the violin at the age of five. She earned her Bachelor of Music in violin performance at the Robert Mcduffie Center for Strings at Mercer University and recently completed her Master of Music at Southern Methodist University. Her primary teachers include Emanuel Borok, David Halen, Amy-Schwarz Moretti, Robert Mcduffie, and David Rubinstein. Julia maintains an active career as a freelance violinist in Dallas, TX.

Hannah Chou began her violin studies at the age of five in Fremont, California. She is a rising senior at Northwestern University and her primary teachers include Gerardo Ribeiro, Mikhail Kopelman, and John Chisholm. In her orchestral career, Hannah has served as section principal in the Northwestern School Orchestra and Eastman School Symphony Orchestra.

Additionally, she is a Finalist for the New World Symphony and an Associate Member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.

Petra Bubanja comes from Montenegro, a small country in the Balkans, situated on the Adriatic coast and surrounded by mountains. She recently finished her DMA in violin performance at Florida State University with primary teacher, Benjamin Sung. She was the FSU Orchestra’s concertmaster for the Spring of 2018. Bubanja attended Brevard Music Festival last summer where she took lessons with Bill Preucil, David Kim and David Coucheron, as a part of the concertmaster studio.

Caitlin began studying the violin at the age of eight in Birmingham, Alabama. She has performed with Grammy nominated P.J. Morton and Lecrae, and recorded with Grammy award winning Israel Houghton and Darlene Zschech.

Caitlin attended the University of Louisville where she studied with J. Patrick Rafferty and won the Concerto Competition. Caitlin is currently a graduate student at DePaul University School of Music and is a fellow with the Chicago Sinfonietta Project Inclusion Ensemble.

McKenna is currently studying for a master’s degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music under William Preucil. She completed a bachelor's degree from McGill University’s Schulich School of Music in 2017. As an educator, McKenna is registered with the Suzuki Association of the Americas and teaches in-residence at Cleveland School of the Arts and the Rainey Institute. Marisa is currently pursuing her DMA at the University of Colorado, Boulder. In 2015, Marisa earned a BM in violin performance and a BS in accounting at CU Boulder. In 2017, Marisa graduated with her MM in violin performance from the University of Texas Austin, and also co-founded the classical chamber music festival, Austin Camerata. Her primary teachers include Charles Wetherbee and Brian Lewis. Marisa also loves yoga and cooking with family and friends.

South Carolina native, Sara Hawkey, earned her BM in violin performance at Bob Jones University in 2016. She has attended the Masterworks Festival as well as the Robert McDuffie Labor Day Festival for Strings. In Greenville, SC, Sara served as assistant principle second violin in the Spartanburg Philharmonic and section violinist in the Greenville Symphony Orchestra. Sara’s recent pedagogues and master class clinicians have included: David Kim, Roger Frisch, David Wallace, Michael Haber, and David Halen.

Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, R. Henry Jenkins started the violin just after his fifth birthday. He is currently studying with Kevork Mardirossian at Indiana University, and received a bachelor’s degree from the Oberlin Conservatory. Past summer festivals include the Litomyšl International String Masterclass, California Summer Music, and Credo Chamber Music. Past teachers include Milan Vitek, Sofia Vitek, Amir Eldan, Per Enoksson, and Austin Hartman.

Born in Minnesota, raised in France and Germany, Benjamin received his bachelor’s from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, under Juliana Athayde. Currently, he is persuing his master’s at McGill’s Schulich School of Music with Alexander Read. Previously a member of the Andrew Alden Ensemble, Benjamin is currently a substitute violinist for Symphoria, the Syracuse-based orchestra, and works with Agora, an orchestra out of Montreal and teaches at the Academie de Musique Vivaldi.

Born and raised in New York City, Brian Lee began studying the violin at age five. He has attended the Eastman School of Music and Montclair State University, where he studied violin with Mikhail Kopelman and Weigang Li, piano with Dr. Sun Min Kim, and orchestral excerpts with Juliana Athayde. His other primary teachers have included Kurt Nikkanen, Jonathan Strasser, and Jean Dane. In his spare time, Brian enjoys watching television.

Audrey began violin lessons at the age of five with Lucy Shaw. In high school, she was accepted into Kenneth Goldsmith’s studio in the pre-college division at Rice University.

She studied with Cornelia Heard at Vanderbilt University, receiving a BM in violin performance and psychology. She completed her MM with William Fedkenheuer at the University of Texas.

Audrey is a member of the first violin section of the Austin Opera and performs with the folk band, American Dreamer.

Julian Maddox is a violinist from Minneapolis, Minnesota studying at the Cleveland Institute of Music with William Preucil. He began studying the violin at the age of six and studied extensively with University of Minnesota professor Sally O’Reilly. Maddox has also attended the National Orchestral Institute as a violin leadership fellow, holding principal and concertmaster positions.

Kristen has collaborated with world-renown musicians such as Joshua Bell, Ida Handel, Elmar Oliviera, Charles Castleman and the Cavani Quartet. This will be her second summer attending the National Repertory Orchestra.

Hailing from Charlotte, NC, Hannah Spear is currently working towards her BM in violin performance at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro under Marjorie Bagley. She performs in ensembles around the state as both an orchestral and chamber musician. In addition to music, Hannah enjoys cooking, reading and spending time with her six(!) younger siblings.

Anna Tucker was born in Brussels, Belgium, to American parents, and raised in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. She started playing the piano at the age of six and took up the violin at the age of eight. Anna has given recitals in places like Transylvania, South Mississippi, and Belgium.

She is currently studying violin performance with Marilyn McDonald at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, on the Marilyn McDonald Scholarship.

Caleb began studying the viola at the age of nine.

Hailing from Oklahoma City, violinist Chase Ward is currently pursuing his Master of Music at the University of Michigan and teaches with the Sphinx Organization’s Overture Program.

Chase plays in the Flint Symphony Orchestra, and is a winner of the Ad Astra, Kieth, and University of Oklahoma concerto competitions.

His principle teachers include David Halen and Hal Grossman. In his spare time, he can be found making guacamole while laugh-crying to Puccini.

Asher Wulfman, from Princeton, is currently pursuing degrees in violin performance and English at Oberlin College and Conservatory, studying with Marilyn McDonald. Asher has played in masterclasses with Joel Krosnick, Kim Kashkashian, Mark Steinberg, Sigurbjorn Bernhardsson, and Pamela Frank. He has been featured as a soloist with the Livingston Symphony Orchestra. He has been fortunate to attend several summer music festivals, including Round Top Festival Institute, Methow Valley Chamber Music Festival, and Yellow Barn Music Festival.

Hannah Martineau is a Houston-based freelancer and a musical omnivore. She enjoys playing diverse engagements ranging from symphony orchestra concerts, to rock shows, from solo recitals, to multi-media collaborations between artists of various disciplines.

Ms. Martineau has developed a particular interest in works by composers who combine Western compositional techniques with Middle Eastern musical traditions. She has programmed multiple concerts in the Houston area with this theme.

Kyle Davis, a Texas native, is an active performer in the Dallas Fort-Worth area and abroad. He earned a BM from the University of North Texas, studying with Dr. Susan Dubois, and will begin his MM in viola performance this fall at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, studying with Atar Arad. Previous festival appearances include the Round Top Festival Institute and the Texas Music Festival.

Linnea received her BM from Rutgers University where she studied with CJ Chang. She holds a performance diploma from Boston University, and is currently working towards her master’s at University of Maryland studying under Katherine Murdock. She has performed in Carnegie Hall, played as principal viola alongside Sharon Isbin, and recorded alongside rapper Jay-Z. She spent the 2017 summer performing at the Aspen Music Festival and was a 2016 fellow at the Round Top Festival Institute.

A native of upstate New York, Ben Pochily earned a BM from the Eastman School of Music with George Taylor and is currently pursuing a master’s degree with Yizhak Schotten at the University of Michigan. His previous orchestral appearances include the National Orchestral Institute and the Traverse Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to his musical activities, he has intermittently pursued a career as a software engineer, most recently working for Pivotal Labs Chicago.

Josephine is a student at Oberlin Conservatory with Peter Slowik. She’s participated in the National Orchestral Institute, National Youth Orchestra, Credo Chamber Music, Music@Menlo, and Music at Tateuchi, where she worked with San Francisco Symphony musicians as a teaching fellow. She can be heard on the Oberlin Music and Naxos Records labels. A lover of many arts, she is part of the latin dance group at Oberlin and does hair for musicians’ performances.

From North Vancouver, Canada, Grace began her music studies on the violin and received her Bachelor of Music from McGill University but, at age 21, switched to the viola. She is a guest musician of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and was co-principal of all Juilliard ensembles.

Her viola mentors have been Misha Amory and Andre Roy. She will further her studies at the Curtis Institute with Roberto Diaz and Hsin-Yun Huang in the Fall.

Michael is an LA native and an active performer in the Chicago area. He holds degrees in viola from UT Austin and DePaul University. As both a soloist and orchestral player, Michael participated in international festivals including the Aspen Music Festival, Montecito, Eastern, Interlochen, Green Mountain, was a fellow for Madeline Island Chamber Music, and attended the Haydn Music Festival in Vienna, Austria.

He is a current member of the Dubuque Symphony and Northbrook Symphony.

Chas is a master’s student at CU-Boulder where he serves as a teaching assistant to David Requiro. As an undergraduate, he attended the University of Oregon and the MusikhochschuleStuttgart. This past season, Chas performed at the Aurora Chamber Music Festival (Sweden) and appeared as soloist with the Eugene Symphony (Oregon). Previously, Chas studied with Steven Pologe, Claudio Bohórquez, and Thomas Stauffer. Originally from Dayton, Ohio and Ashland, Oregon, Chas started cello in a public-school program.

Adelaide Im made her solo debut with the Macao Youth Symphony Orchestra at the age of fifteen.

The following year, she joined the Macao Virtuosi and recorded her first CD “Dancing Strings.”

As an orchestral musician, she has performed with the Portugal National Symphony Orchestra, Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, Bundesjugendorchester, Asian Youth Orchestra, and the Texas Music Festival Orchestra. When she is not playing cello, Adelaide likes to practice English calligraphy.

Eva Roebuck is a twenty-four year old cellist from Kansas City, Kansas. She earned her bachelor’s degree in cello performance at Kansas State University under David Littrell.

She is currently pursuing her master’s degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with Sharon Robinson. In her free time, Eva enjoys reading, painting, and hiking.

Sara, a native of Tucson, AZ, earned her Bachelor of Music in cello performance from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, and is completing her master’s at the New England Conservatory. Her primary teachers include Yeesun Kim, Eric Kim, Mary Beth Tyndall, Margaret Gilmore, and Dr. Gordon Epperson.

She has attended the Colorado College Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, and Music Masters Course Japan. Sara is a triplet. She loves dogs, and being outdoors.

Stephen graduated from Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, with a BM in cello performance.

A 2016 NRO alumnus, he has also participated in other summer festivals including the 2015 Music Mountain Masterclass series and the 2017 Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy in British Columbia, Canada, where he was a concerto competition finalist. During the past school year, Stephen regularly performed with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra as a member of the cello section.

Andrew has the distinction of completing four degrees in under six years; bachelor’s degrees in music and biology from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI, and master’s degrees in cello performance and chamber music from the University of Michigan. Following his busy education, Andrew has been living a more simple (usually!) freelance life in West Michigan. In his free time, Andrew enjoys all kinds of outdoor activities: biking, water sports, hiking, and nature photography.

Jacqueline Rogers, from Toronto, Canada, recently completed her undergraduate studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music in the studio of Dr. Melissa Kraut. Recently awarded the Silver Prize in the collegiate division of the Cleveland Cello Society Scholarship Competition 2017, Jacqueline has also appeared as a soloist with the Rocky Ridge Summer Festival Orchestra in June 2017, and the Toronto Sinfonietta Orchestra in 2014.

Outside of music, Carrington enjoys working out at the gym, watching movies and spending time with friends.

Joe comes from Long Island, New York, and has been studying the double bass since the age of nine. In the spring of 2018, Joe received a Bachelor of Music in double bass performance from Indiana University, Bloomington, where he studied with Professor Kurt Muroki.

He will remain with Professor Muroki at IU in the fall of 2018 to begin his master’s degree in bass performance.

She is originally from Toronto where she completed her Bachelor of Music at the University of Toronto studying with Kristen Bruya and Edward Tait. Chantel has also attended programs such as the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Domaine Forget and the Oxford Music Academy.

Sam, a New Orleans native, is pursuing a Master of Music in double bass performance from McGill University in Montréal, Québec. He is a student of Eric Chappell, assistant principal bass of Orchestre symphonique de Montréal.

As Principal Flute of the American Chamber Winds, Nicole recently completed tours of Brazil, Italy, the Netherlands, and France. She earned performance degrees from Indiana University, where she was an Associate Instructor, and the University of Florida. Her primary teachers include Thomas Robertello, Jennifer Gunn, and Kristen Stoner.

Danielle (Dani) is a doctoral candidate and teaching assistant at the University of Illinois, studying flute performance with Jonathan Keeble. Dani performs with Sinfonia da Camera and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and was a quarterfinalist in the 2017 National Flute Association Young Artist Competition. Minoring in ethnomusicology, she studies Bulgarian music and plays the Bulgarian traditional flute, kaval. Dani holds performance degrees from the University of Cincinnati (MM) and Texas State University (BM).

Devan Jaquez is earning his master’s at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles where he studies with Jim Walker. He received his BA in music performance from UCLA where he received the Presser Scholar Award and studied with Sheridon Stokes. Devan is currently the second flutist in the American Youth Symphony (AYS) directed by Carlos Izcaray. He has played as guest principal flute with the Bellflower Symphony and freelances in the Los Angeles area.

Currently based in Chicago, Patrick Tsuji was formally a fellow with The Civic Orchestra of Chicago. He has participated in festivals such as Spoleto Festival USA, Music Academy of the West and the Aspen Music Festival. Patrick was the third-prize winner of the National Flute Association’s Young Artist Competition. Patrick received his Master of Music from Rice University and his BFA from Carnegie Mellon University.

An Iowa native, Eleni received a BM in bassoon performance from the University of WisconsinMadison, under Professor Marc Vallon. This year, she won the UW-Madison Symphony Concerto Competition. Eleni has attended the IMANI Winds and Madeline Island Chamber Music Festivals, Brevard Music Center, and Chautauqua Institution. This fall, she will attend the Yale School of Music for her master’s degree, under Professor Frank Morelli. In her free time, Eleni enjoys practicing yoga and cooking.

Taylor Shorey has performed with orchestras throughout Florida such as the Tallahassee Symphony, the Albany Symphony, and the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Shorey attended the National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute, the Eastern Music Festival, and the Sarasota Music Festival.

He completed his Bachelor of Music at Florida State University in 2017 under the tutelage of Jeff Keesecker. He currently resides in Los Angeles, and studies at the Colburn School with Professor Richard Beene.

Cameron Winrow

Vitor Trindade was born in Lisbon, Portugal.

Vitor is in his first year of graduate studies at the Colburn Conservatory of Music with Yehuda Gilad. He completed his undergraduate studies at the National Orchestra Academy in Lisbon.

Vitor has won several international solo and chamber music competitions including the Saverio Mercadante competition, the Julian Menendez competition, and the Czech Art Clarinet Competition. He collaborates regularly with the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra and the Lisbon Contemporary Music Group.

Cameron picked up his mother’s old marching band clarinet in the fifth grade. Although always identifying as a musician, an erratic life trajectory has somehow netted him an engineering degree from UC Berkeley, a job in an oil refinery, and most recently a master’s degree in clarinet performance from Jacobs School of Music with Eli Eban.

Brennan Moran was born and raised in the Dallas area and after some early musical training on violin and piano, started playing bassoon when he was eleven. He is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in bassoon performance at Southern Methodist University with Wilfred Roberts. Prior to his time with the National Repertory Orchestra, Brennan had spent summers with the National Orchestral Institute in Baltimore and the Sunflower Music Festival in Kansas.

Jacob Thonis made his solo debut in 2013, playing Weber’s Andante und Rondo Hungarese with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He was principal bassoon of the New York String Orchestra in 2015 and 2017. In addition to NRO, Mr. Thonis has spent summers as a fellow at the Texas Music Festival and the Round Top Festival-Institute.

Thonis received degrees from The Colburn School and Rice University, studying with Richard Beene and Benjamin Kamins, respectively.

Spencer Bay HORN

Spencer began playing the horn at age fourteen.

Spencer is in his senior year this fall at Rice University. He has attended the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity Summer Horn workshop, the National Orchestra Institute & Festival at the University of Maryland, and was a finalist in the 2018 Mika Hasler Competition. Spencer is a member of the Rice Horn Crew under the instruction and guidance of William VerMeulen.

Megan Shusta has been the principal horn of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic since January of 2018 and frequently performs with the Boston Symphony and Columbus Symphony.

Megan earned her bachelor’s degree in 2017 from the New England Conservatory. Her primary teachers include Jamie Sommerville and Gabe Radford. In her free time, Megan enjoys visiting her parents and sister, Sydney, in her hometown of York, Maine and spending time on their lobster boat.

Chandler first studied the horn with David Jolley through the UNC School of the Arts high school program in North Carolina. He received his BM in horn performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder and, after studying with CU alum Lisa Rogers at the Anton Rubinstein Musikakademie (Germany), has returned to Colorado and maintains an active freelance career while pursuing a second degree with professor Michael Thornton of the Colorado Symphony.

A native of Buffalo, New York, Justin Kohan is second trumpet of the Canton Symphony Orchestra, and a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his BM from the New England Conservatory, and his Advanced Musical Studies Certificate from Carnegie Mellon University. Justin has performed with groups such as the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Portland Symphony Orchestra, and the New World Symphony. His primary teachers include Thomas Rolfs, Neal Berntsen, and Micah Wilkinson.

Michael Terrasi is a freelance trumpet player.

He appears as a substitute with the Milwaukee Symphony, and has performed with the San Francisco Opera, the Stockton Symphony and the Modesto Symphony. Michael received his Bachelor of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with Michael Miller and Michael Sachs, and was awarded the Bernard Adelstein Trumpet Prize. He received his Master of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, studying with Adam Luftman.

Alejandro was born in Mexico and graduated with honors from the Universidad Veracruzana.

He served as principal trombone in the Filarmónica 5 de Mayo in Puebla, Mexico, from 2015 to 2017. He won the Latin-American Trombone Competition and the Manuel M. Ponce prize in 2013. Alejandro has participated in music festivals outside of Mexico and is currently pursuing a Master of Music at the University of New Mexico as a recipient of the Conacyt-FINBA scholarship.

Michael Gause is an avid orchestral musician and has performed with the Kalamazoo Symphony and San Antonio Symphony. Michael was recently appointed as third trumpet in the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and awarded the Detroit Symphony Orchestra African American Fellowship. Michael holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas and a master’s degree from Western Michigan University, both in performance.

His principal teachers include Justin Emerich, Scott Thornburg and Dr. Robert White.

Rebecca, from Beltsville, Maryland, received a Bachelor of Music from Boston University and is currently pursuing a Master of Music at Northwestern University, both in trumpet performance. While at BU, Rebecca placed second in the National Trumpet Competition’s Undergraduate Solo Division and attended the Tanglewood Music Center and Music Academy of the West. In her free time, Rebecca loves to paint and go running.

Myles received a Bachelor of Music in performance from Southern Methodist University, under John Kitzman, and a Master of Music in orchestral performance from the Manhattan School of Music, under Per Brevig.

Currently, Mr. Blakemore is a fellow with the New World Symphony in Miami Beach. Professionally, he has performed with the Charleston Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Malaysian Philharmonic, and Minnesota Orchestra. Outside of trombone, Myles enjoys dancing, singing karaoke and Dallas Cowboys Football.

Lyman McBride has received degrees from The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, PA and Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. In 2015 he won the Larry Wiehe Competition and later received honorable mention in the Frank Smith competition in 2017. His primary teachers include Nitzan Haroz, Matt Vaughn, Will Kimball, and Graeme Mutchler. He enjoys running trail marathons, water skiing, and playing peek-a-boo with his 8 month old daughter.

Percussionist Charlie Rosmarin has enjoyed concerts at the BBC Proms, the Gewandhaus Hall (Germany), and concerts with the New York Philharmonic. A Boston native, Mr. Rosmarin has performed across the globe, visiting Japan, Singapore, South Korea, London, Germany, the Czech Republic, England, and throughout the United States. Mr. Rosmarin is currently a Professional Studies Certificate candidate at The Colburn School, having previously studied at the Juilliard School and New England Conservatory.

Harpist, Molly Langr, has attended many distinguished festivals including the Round Top Festival Institute, National Youth Orchestra of the USA, and Texas Music Festival. Most recently, she placed third in the advanced division of the American Harp Society national competition.

Recent orchestral engagements include the San Francisco Symphony and the Santa Cruz Symphony. She is a recent graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory and will be attending the Shepherd School of Music this fall.

Mio earned a BM from the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music in Japan and completed a Professional Studies Diploma from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Currently, she studies with Joela Jones at Cleveland State University on a full scholarship. She has performed with the Cleveland Orchestra Choruses, the Akron Symphony Orchestra, and the Firelands Symphony Orchestra. She was awarded a full scholarship to perform at the Kent Blossom Music Festival in 2016 and 2017.

elcome to the opening concert of the 2018 National Repertory Orchestra season!

The musicians of the NRO are competitors who have been chosen to work as one amazing team to bring this season’s concerts to you. And summer in Summit County is nature’s call to stretch ourselves in the sun and push ourselves up. So a great way to open our season is with music that reflects that strong, sunny, ennobling attitude. John Williams, whose music is ingrained in American popular culture through dozens of iconic film scores, began composing music for American broadcast coverage of the Olympics starting in 1984. Our concert- and season opener, The Olympic Spirit, was penned for the 1988 summer games in Seoul. This opener commemorates the NRO’s trip to the Seoul Olympics 30 years ago.

An Olympian of the musical arts, Samuel Barber was a triple threat—or at least, a triple major—when he enrolled in the inaugural class at the prestigious Curtis Institute in 1914: voice, composition, and piano. Soon after graduation he was already internationally recognized as one of America’s leading composers.

Barber worked on his Second Essay and the Violin Concerto concurrently, though he started the concerto first. The Essay, a one-movement work of ten minutes’ duration, opens with a sparse four-bar opening phrase containing only four pitches. But these four tones, arranged in a code-like rhythmic pattern, generate everything which is to follow: a fidgety, Rubik’s cube of a fugue; a few cinematic scenes of grand spectacle and sparkly starscapes; a little toadstool jig; and the broad, muscle-bound climax.

In 1939 Barber was contacted by Samuel Fels, scion of the Fels-Naphtha laundry soap dynasty.

His son played the violin, and Fels wanted Barber to write him a concerto. Barber’s response, as you’ll hear in the first and second movements, is majestic, lyrically expressive and full of memorable phrases — but Fels thought the third movement lacked pizazz.

So Barber replaced it with the finale you’ll hear tonight: a perpetuum-mobile that thwarts any but the most fearless virtuoso today.

As we celebrate the centenary of Leonard Bernstein this year, we seize the chance to perform music from his landmark 1957 Broadway production, West Side Story, a reworking of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet where Romeo becomes Tony; Juliet, Maria; Montagues, Jets; and Capulets, Sharks. Bernstein later arranged the jazz- and latin-infused score into a quasi-suite. But unlike a string of songs from a musical, the materials of West Side Story were crafted from the outset to fit together symphonically — hence, Symphonic Dances. Bernstein evokes the tension of the play with cunning orchestrational choices: the taut snap of the opening lick, with bongos; the literal fingersnaps of the orchestra musicians; later on, pounding percussion in the Rumble; everything adds to the drama. You’ll not be deprived of your chance to relive the heartbreaking beauty of the twin love songs Somewhere and Maria, either. Bernstein reminds us in the bleak and unresolved final bars of the piece, that this is, after all, a tragedy.

Bernstein, Barber and Williams occupy a pretty rarified tier of American composers, but there’s room in that club for one more: George Gershwin. His 1928 jazz-influenced concert piece An American in Paris, a landmark work in the development of 20th-century American orchestral music, is many a conservatory-trained percussionist’s first opportunity to master the finer points of playing taxicab horns. (Gershwin and his friend Mabel Schermer actually went in search of the exact horns in the auto showrooms along the Avenue de la Grande Armée in Paris.) But it’s also full of bluesy tunes for woodwinds, sometimes strings, and most prominently, muted trumpet.

There are masterful touches everywhere — dizzying piccolo and flute accompanimental figurations, brash trombone interjections, and even a duet between violin and tuba. While in Paris, Gershwin approached both Maurice Ravel and Igor Stravinsky for composition lessons. They both turned him down — who could teach anything to the composer of Rhapsody in Blue?

here could be no better way to celebrate the true heroes of Summit County, our first responders, than by featuring musical heroes.

We are proud to be donating a portion of tonight’s proceeds to our first responder not-for-profits.

Born on leap day, 1792 in Pesaro, Italy, Giaochino Rossini had perhaps the most enviable career of all the great composers: he wrote his first opera at age 18 and retired a wealthy man at age 36. He lived mainly in Paris after that, where he was treated as a celebrity and his gourmand lifestyle left a permanent imprint on the city’s classical cuisine. Today you can still find dishes such as tournedos Rossini on many a traditional bistro menu. (That item by the way, is a filet of beef, fried in butter, served on a crouton, topped with a hot slice of foie gras, and garnished with shavings of black truffle and a Madeira demi-glace.)

The overture to William Tell is almost a symphony unto itself. It opens at dawn with a glowing cello chorus, featuring displays of lyrical and technical brilliance from the principal. A storm breaks out before we find a shepherd calling for his herd, in the form of a duet between english horn and flute. The brassy finale is a reference to the Swiss battle to liberate their country from Austria. Or, if you prefer: Hi Ho, Silver! Away!

The orchestral works of Russell Peck have been performed thousands of times and by some of the major orchestras of US and Europe. The Glory and the Grandeur, one of his best known works, is a concerto for percussion trio. Each of the three percussionists has their own station equipped with snare, two tom toms, a small bass drum and a suspended cymbal.

Augmenting these are two xylophones, a four-octave marimba, vibraphone (these last two are often shared by two or more of the soloists at a time), two glockenspiels, crotales (ask your butcher), two triangles, crash cymbals, tambourine, three Chinese cymbals, three Chinese opera gongs, bamboo wind chimes, guiro (a Latin-American notched gourd) and sandpaper

grill blocks. The very spectacle of the soloist’s maneuverings among this forest of instruments is part of the fun here. An extended solo for the three percussionists, using the tom toms and bass drums only, opens the concerto. After the orchestra’s initially alarmed reaction, gradually the tempo subsides, giving way to a passage focusing on flowing lines in the vibraphone.

The remainder of this one-movement work overflows with lightning-fast mallet work and ends in a flurry of drumming reminiscent of the opening bars.

The third symphony of Beethoven was a turning point in his creative approach, and in the development of the symphony as a genre. Completed in 1804, Beethoven had intended to dedicate it to Napoleon.

But when he learned that Napoleon had claimed himself Emperor of France and was crowned in Notre Dame Cathedral, Beethoven flew off the handle.

This liberator of the masses was then, after all, only “an ordinary human being” in his view, and he took a knife to the title page of his symphony which had borne the name “Bonaparte.” (An Italian publisher later gave it the new subtitle, Eroica.) This symphony ushers in Beethoven’s middle, “heroic” period, and it throws open the gates to hitherto undreamed-of symphonic galaxies.

The two hefty chords which start the first movement serve as gate-posts to the massive Eroica symphony. Behind those gates in the first movement we find four themes, so tightly constructed in relation to one another that upon study, even the surprises (like the cello melody’s slipping so soon into a “wrong-note,” c sharp) begin to seem inevitable.

Beethoven doesn’t miss a chance either, to use offbeat syncopations and the timpani to bat us around here and there. The second movement is a funeral procession, phrase after phrase of which piles up before a fugue is employed to heighten our sense that implacable columns of dread have risen everywhere around us. In the third movement, Beethoven’s main building blocks are simply tension and release. The quiet opening seems perky and innocent at first, but soon the oscillating string accompaniment is used to pull tight a bowstring and send the movement flying into space. The finale is two interleaved sets of variations, each on their own theme. But here’s the catch: the first theme is the bass line to the second. At the conclusion of another rousing fugue and a brief break in the action, a beautiful oboe solo ushers in the final set of variations, where the most sublime potentials latent in these materials are revealed.

“I

may not be a first-rate composer, but I am a firstclass second-rate composer,” quipped Richard Strauss, only a little self-deprecatingly. This sort of wit was what drew the master tone poet to the tale of Till Eulenspiegel. In German folklore, Till—whose name translates to “owl-mirror”—was a vagabond prankster with a taste for skewering authority. In Strauss’ imaginative setting, we are ushered into a world of make-believe by a “once upon a time” motive, heard at the very opening in the strings. Immediately following this is the horn call that is Till’s signature theme. (This is an item every horn player must master to win a coveted orchestra job; it demands finesse and power, and it spans the better part of three octaves.) Another prominent motif is the wheedling figure first heard in the clarinet, set apart by a short pause in the action. Till rides his steed into a busy village market, topples produce stands, chases girls, taunts the clergy and the intelligentsia, and arouses the ire of the authorities.

Ultimately he is brought to trial and hanged for his mischief, but Strauss’ final bars remind us that the legend of Till endures.

Franz Joseph Haydn was fifty eight years old the first time he crossed the English Channel for a concert tour of London. It was a runaway success, and a second tour was arranged for 1794. This time some competition had arrived, in the form of his former pupil Ignaz Pleyel. Pleyel sat up a rival concert series and began programming his trademark sinfoni concertanti—concertos for multiple instruments.

Haydn, who until then had not specialized in concertos, was obliged to offer his own model, which is the work on our program tonight. He cast it for orchestra with violin, cello, oboe, and bassoon as soloists, and his entrepreneurial friend Salomon would take the violin part. It’s easy to see that each of the soloists he was writing for were accomplished professionals; the music is of the highest late-period-Haydn caliber.

The work is in the typical three-movement form, the outer two being generally quicker and the middle one the soft, lyrical point of repose. Throughout, the four soloists engage in amiable conversation among themselves, not mugging for the spotlight but emerging from

STAY and receding back into the broader texture casually.

One notable exception is an unusual opera-esque violin solo at the beginning of the third movement.

The atmosphere in each of the movements is genteel and civilized, warmed by the natural good cheer and humor of its author.

Michael Daugherty, born in 1954 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has become one of our century’s most frequently performed and widely acclaimed composers. The eldest of five brothers, professional musicians all, he grew up playing in rock and jazz groups and soaking up every aspect of American pop culture. In 1988 he took inspiration from a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Superman’s appearance in comics, and worked on this large-scale composition until 1993.

His breakout work, Metropolis is a series of five tableaux dealing with the myth of Superman. Lex, the first movement, treats the subject of Superman’s arch-nemesis as a devilishly difficult solo violin part, with the orchestra in hot pursuit. Four referee whistles are placed quadrophonically around the stage.

Krypton, the planet from which Superman escaped, opens with microtonal smudges in the violins, trombones, and an air raid siren. There are fire-engine bells placed across the stage from one another. The whole shebang heads towards chaos and a paroxysmal climax.

Up next is the movement who dares you to say its name: MXYZPTLK. Daugherty helpfully tells us this is “a mischievous imp from the fifth dimension who regularly wreaks havoc on Metropolis.” Here, the brightest-hued orchestral colors dominate. Two flutes are in the spotlight, each to one side of the conductor’s podium.

Plucked strings are made to flit across the orchestra and back as crisp woodblocks accompany before the whole orchestra joins in a rascally groove.

“Faster than a speeding bullet” is the intimidating tempo given at the top of movement four, Oh, Lois!

Yes, that’s a synthesizer you hear, tucked back into the orchestra. Now the whole ensemble is one whiz-bang cartoon concertino group, suggesting the pratfalls, jagged dialogue balloons, and ben-day dots of a gallery full of animated Lichtenstein paintings.

Red Cape Tango is the symphony’s final, and weightiest, movement. After an introduction by two horns—one onstage, one offstage—a solo double bass sets up the tango rhythm. As a bassoon and violin begin flirtatiously to dance, you’ll notice a haunting tune tolling softly in the chimes. It’s the Latin poem evoking the Day of the Dead: the Dies Irae. This is Superman’s fight — or, dance?

M

ozart’s last three symphonies, written together in the summer of 1788, stand apart from his others in several ways.

First, it’s clear that he conceived of them as a kind of trilogy, which he had never tried before. Second, he might have written them with no clear idea of when they might be performed, which for him is exceptional. So though it’s not clear exactly what the impetus for these three was, we might imagine he had something personal to say through them, if only for posterity. He had, after all, been writing symphonies since he was eight and a half. But they stand apart in one other more pertinent sense: they are masterpieces of symphonic writing that surpass anything he or anyone else had yet composed. They are longer, more complex, more virtuosic, have a much broader palette of tone color, and are more serious than their predecessors. Far west in Bonn, a young composer named Ludwig van Beethoven just turned eighteen; it would be twelve years before his first symphony appeared.

The E-flat symphony (fun fact: his only one without oboes) opens with a slow, exultant and theatrical passage, a throwback to French ouvertures. A listener at a memorial concert for Mozart in 1792 noted that the effect of this grand introduction was that everyone was “prevented from being inattentive.” This leads ceremoniously into the beginning of the Allegro proper, which is in triple time. Trumpets and timpani sit out the andante, which presents two subjects: one sweet and delicate, the other stormy and contentious.

A real, lederhosen-sporting Alpine ländler occupies the central part of the gallant third movement. The finale tumbles along with wit, presto-change-o theatrics, and verve.

In 1863, a nineteen-year-old Spanish violinist named Pablo de Sarasate approached Camille SaintSaëns for a commission. Sarasate would become one of the most famous and influential violin superstars of the century, responsible for a great many masterpieces for that instrument. Since Saint-Saëns was no violinist, the project was unusually collaborative (Sarasate was a capable composer himself). The result, Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, despite its formal title, is a fantasy showpiece for violin and orchestra. The introduction, short but suave and smoky, soon gives way to a rondo which may remind you of George Bizet’s spanish-flavored opera Carmen—but that’s the egg; this is the chicken. The popularity of this work and all things Sarasate created the demand that Bizet filled when he wrote that opera a dozen years later.

Bela Bartok was a deeply patriotic Hungarian. But in the 1930s in Hungary it was increasingly difficult to get along if you did not support the Nazis, and so he was obliged to leave. Upon arriving in New York with his family in October 1940, Bartok would not see his beloved homeland again. He was never quite comfortable in this country, and his health was disastrously declining, but he had some very influential champions in the music world here, including Fritz Reiner, who had studied with him in Budapest; Reiner was at that time the conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony. Another friend, the eminent violin virtuoso Joseph Szigeti had been here since the previous year, and greeted Bartok enthusiastically on his arrival. Two days later they played a recital at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Together Reiner and Szigeti persuaded the influential conductor of the Boston Symphony, Serge Koussevitsky, to commission a work for that crackerjack ensemble.

“Kouss”, as he was affectionately known, visited Bartok in person, lying in a New York hospital bed, to make the request. The result is one of the very last works Bartok completed, and one of his most wellknown masterpieces.

Concerto for Orchestra is typical of Bartok’s later phase, when he was obsessed with symmetrical arch forms. There are five movements; one in the center and two pairs flanking it on either side. A murky opening works up through the double basses to the flutes and trumpets, before a clear theme emerges, searing, from the violins. Bartok calls the second movement a “game of pairs”; after a short solo for side drum (snare drum without snare), pairs of woodwinds give five sets of themes, each locked together at different musical intervals. After a short, perky chorale for muted brass, these pairs are reprised in varying forms and the side drum brings the games to a close. The moody and atmospheric Elegy which follows is the central point of the work. Bartok described the fourth movement as a love serenade which is disrupted by a band of drunken revelers, but it is hard not to hear some allegory about Hungary’s fall to the Nazis in this music. The serenade theme is a superficially modified version of a popular tune, “Hungary, you are beautiful,” and the interruption is a parody of Shostakovich’s seventh symphony, written during and about the siege of Leningrad. Bartok pays homage in the whirling finale to the great tradition of folk dance music which he knew so well.

e have Carl Topilow and a 1988 National Repertory Orchestra tour of Korea, Taiwan, and Japan to thank for tonight’s concert opener, Snake Alley. In Taipei, this is where snake vendors ply their trade, and where then co-principal trumpeter of the NRO, David Dzubay and some of the musicians ventured. Besides snakes and people drinking snake blood, they found turtle vendors, an orangutan entertaining a gaggle of children, feats of strength, gambling, beggar priests, and all manner of wares being hawked. The piece begins with a hair-raising taxi ride, and we arrive at Snake Alley somewhat dazed and overstimulated. As we meander, slowly at first, through the market, exotic novelties are thrust upon us. Pulsating, sinuous music signals our arrival in the snake alley itself, but little by little we become overwhelmed and anxious.

A climax of brass and percussion finds us suddenly at the center of a cluster of brothels—you’ll hear what Dzubay calls “stripper music” here. A priest and a throng of Taiwanese children appear, singing a folksong, before we find our way back into a taxi. As a whirling montage of everything we’ve seen fills our reeling imagination, we gradually relax.

The life of Sergei Prokofiev was marked by a miserable recurring theme—it seemed he was always playing second banana. On his first tour to the US, beginning in 1918, he found the market for virtuoso/ Russian/pianist-composers had been cornered by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Failing to make headway here after four frustrating years, he took his family to Paris. There, audiences’ appetites for Russian modernist composers had been sated by their darling, Igor Stravinsky.

Ultimately, Prokofiev would become the first important Russian composer to return to Moscow after the Second World War and remain. (Not that he had a choice; they confiscated his passport pretty quickly.) Even at the 1923 premiere of his violin concerto in Paris, the spotlight was focused on another attraction on the program—a new Octet by Stravinsky, with Igor himself making his first appearance as conductor.

This concerto is marked by an almost neo-classical sense of line in the outer movements. The first movement

almost twenty years to complete his

first symphony.

begins directly with just that: a long, lyrical melody, strings shimmering underneath in delicate accompaniment. There is a more unsettled and discursive central section, which Prokofiev instructed one violinist to play “as if you’re trying to convince someone of something.”

The middle movement contrasts with its neighbors.

From needle-like harmonics to gruff G-string rasps, the soloist is driven to the extreme technical ranges of the instrument. Contrasting episodes flick past; the tuba bumbles into the action, amiably; and before we know it, the tambourine punctuates the movement’s precipitous close.

More lyrical smoothness fills the third movement — as much for the orchestra’s parts as the soloist, who is often given ingenious complementary material.

It famously took Johannes Brahms almost twenty years to complete his first symphony. His obstacle was not musical, but psychological—to him, it seemed impossible to follow what Beethoven had wrought in that medium. But once that phobia had been overcome, he proceeded confidently with his next three.

There’s a lot of Bach in Brahms’ symphonies, and the fourth in particular. The opening of the first movement is a little puzzle, to be worked out over the course of the movement. Violins give us four notes, in two sets of two, one pair falling, one rising; this pattern is then repeated, down one step. Then the figure is expanded and heightened, and soon there are multiple procedures happening to it simultaneously. This very abstract and quasi-archaic language is at the heart of this symphony’s mysterious appeal. Structures pile up very high in the first and final movements, and an almost cosmic scale is evoked which only Beethoven had broached before. Notice too how Brahms obsesses over the tug between double and triple divisions of the pulse.

Similarly, the slower second movement is occupied with the contrast between an austere and ominous opening motive in the ancient Phrygian mode, and a sensuous cello melody. These mysteries are blasted away in the instant the third movement Scherzo begins. This is a celebration of movement, adorned by the ring of triangle and piccolo.

For the finale, Brahms turns again to an ancient form: the passacaglia, a Baroque version of theme and variations. The eight-bar theme given at the opening is treated in thirty-two variations and a concluding coda.

Until this movement, the trombones have sat patiently, since Brahms gave them nothing to do in the first three.

They earn their keep now, particularly in the glorious final moments.

he NRO takes a musical journey to Spain and Latin America in this concert, benefiting the Family and Intercultural Resource Center (FIRC).

A portion of ticket proceeds will go to FIRC to help support the work they do in Summit County.

The score of Joaquin Turina’s Danzas Fantasticas is saturated in Spanish folk idioms—but also peppered with excerpts from a 1919 novella titled La orgia by fellow Sevillan, José Más y Laglera. Exaltation’s deceptively calm, flamenco-like introduction gives way to a boisterous Jota dance. Colorful writing for the harp, contrabassoon, and english horn show from the outset how cunningly Turina has orchestrated this music, which was originally written for solo piano. The second dance, Musing, draws its signature rhythm from a basque dance form, the Zortzico.

Pairs of flutes give the innocent tune first, followed by turns in the other woodwinds, and a distant church bell can be heard. In the score for the final movement, Orgy, Turina includes this quote: “The perfume of flowers is intermingled with the odor of chamomile, and the bouquet of tall chalices filled with incomparable wine.

From this, like incense, the dance rises.”

Manuel de Falla, like Turina, was forced to return to Spain from Paris when the Great War broke out.

He spent part of the summer of 1915 in the lovely seaside village of Sitges, where he put the finishing touches on Nights in the Gardens of Spain. It is an extravagantly orchestrated series of symphonic impressions for piano and orchestra, each is named for a specific locale. The Generalife are the hillside gardens near the Alhambra palace complex in Granada, a place Falla had never seen when he wrote this music. (He would later reside in Granada for almost twenty years.) The second movement has the passion and swagger of the malagueño, a flamenco song form. It is joined to the third without a break, on the peak of a crescendo begun with rhythmic insistence from the piano. In this movement, Falla has the piano play an elaborated gypsy song in bare octaves, a device which serves to cut perfectly through the often thick orchestration.

In 1916, at age fifty, Enrique Granados was for the first time receiving international recognition. His first tour to the US included a premiere of the opera Goyescas at the Met in New York, and the Chicago Symphony premiered his symphonic poem Dante. His visit even elicited an invitation to meet and play for President Wilson at the White House. In order to attend, Granados was obliged to cancel his scheduled sailing back to Spain and take a later one instead, to England. From there he boarded a passenger ferry to cross to France, but this vessel was struck crossing the English Channel by a German torpedo. The boat did not sink, but many passengers were thrown overboard, including Granados’ wife. He jumped in to save her and they both drowned. Goyescas is his crowning achievement, and one little item extracted from it has become his most frequently performed work today. It is a simple setting of a haunting and hypnotic melody.

Though Spain had been a musical powerhouse from the Renaissance through the eighteenth century, the chaos it experienced in the nineteenth century decimated its musical institutions. Folk and popular traditions thrived, but conservatories, orchestras, and audiences to support them grew slowly. Neighboring France, on the contrary, enjoyed a period of musical near-hegemony in the latter half of the 1800s, which is precisely why the three Spanish composers on this evening’s program went there to find work and to study. Consequently, spanish-sounding music (or what sounded Spanish to the French, anyway) was suddenly on trend in Paris as the century drew to a close. The greatest of these French tributes is Claude Debussy’s Iberia, which is actually a triptych within a larger three-movement work for orchestra, Images II. Debussy wrote it having only crossed into Spain once, to see a bullfight in San Sebastían, and only for one night. The first of the three parts of Iberia evokes the commotion of a Spanish city on a hot afternoon. A dreamy nocturne takes the middle spot, and the whole string section functions as one fantastic guitar in the festive finale.

Mexican-born composer Arturo Márquez, who grew up partly in Los Angeles, studied composition in Mexico City, Paris, and California. His Danzón No. 2 has been adopted as an unofficial national anthem of Mexico. The composer tells of learning the rhythms of the danzón, a graceful ballroom dance, saying, “to understand that the apparent lightness of the danzón is only like a visiting card for a type of music full of sensuality and qualitative seriousness...which old Mexican people continue to dance with a touch of nostalgia and a jubilant escape toward their own emotional world.”

aurice Ravel inclined musically towards the exotic, and he wrote a number of works with specifically Iberian flair: Bolero, Rhapsodie espagnole, even an opera, L’Heure espagnole. Alborada del gracioso is one of these. It was originally one of five works for solo piano contained in a landmark suite, Miroirs, two of which he later orchestrated. If you’re a young Spanish lover who’s sneaked into your paramour’s chamber for a night of whispering sweet nothings, and you’ve stationed your jester outside the chamber door with instructions to let you know when dawn is breaking so you can make your escape, the piece of music to suit this purpose is called an alborado. Ravel’s somewhat mysterious addition of the words del gracioso indicate that this is a dawn song of a buffoon.

From the relatively constrained timbral world of the solo piano original, Ravel—one of humankind’s greatest orchestrators—calls forth the most brilliant instrumental colors. The work opens and closes with a strumming motif, decorated with castanets and in the end, trombone glissandi. In the middle of the work is the dawn-song itself, sung at first by the bassoon and later doubled by violas and cellos in octaves.

Pat Metheny is, in the words of Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Percussionist and arranger Chris Deviney, “an important figure in the development of music generally.” Best known for his jazz guitar recordings and performances, Metheny has twenty Grammy awards in ten different categories. The Pat Metheny Group’s 1997 album Imaginary Day, the third in a trilogy of albums, inspired Deviney to arrange a suite of three selections for two percussionists and orchestra. Metheny (with considerable contributions from keyboardist/composer Lyle Mays) forged an unmistakable harmonic idiom out of the language of jazz and world fusion, as evident in the first selection,The Awakening. Across the Sky features one of Metheny’s signature long-lined guitar improvisations colorfully recast as a virtuoso vibraphone solo, around which the orchestra adds increasingly rich accompaniment. the Day, featuring middle-eastern modalities, drives towards a hypnotic and burly climax.

Berlioz composed the Symphonie fantastique in 1830 and it was first performed in December of that year. Before the premiere, Berlioz had a “program” for the symphony published in the newspaper. This was a completely novel occurrence, and caused critical furor even before a note of the work had been heard.

At the same time, there was a real-life situation that made Berlioz’s manipulation of the media seem uncannily twenty-first century.

Berlioz attended a performance of Shakespeare’s Hamlet in September of 1827 and developed a foolish romantic obsession with the leading lady, Harriet Smithson. Over the next few years he attempted in vain to make himself known to her, meanwhile composing the Symphonie and its famous program.

In it, Berlioz tells the story of a young artist who falls madly in love with a young woman who becomes the object of - sound familiar? - his psychotic fixation. She is represented by a melody (he calls it the idée fixe), which is heard in each of the Symphonie’s five movements. After the introduction, the idée is presented as a vision of noble beauty by flute together with the first violins while the rest of the string section play increasingly agitated heart-throbs in the background.

The next movement is a scene at a ball, with yards of silk swirling about the room. Berlioz takes care to introduce the scene in a completely theatrical way, each detail coming into focus as the picture becomes complete. The beloved’s presence is made known.

The artist then finds himself out in the countryside, finding solace in the sound of piping shepherds, but his thoughts turn panicked when he remembers the beloved. Having convinced himself that he is being jilted (by a woman he’s never actually met), the author kicks off the rest of the Symphonie by dosing himself with opium. In the delirium which follows, he imagines that he has murdered the object of his affections and is marched off to the scaffold for a beheading. Yet this does not end his hallucinations— there is one movement to go. He finds himself witness to a midnight gathering of witches. Amid their unholy rituals the beloved appears, wretched and grotesque.

The crowning, blasphemous bars of the Symphonie feature a fugue, which takes as its subject a quote of the chant melody from a section of the Catholic Mass for the dead, Dies irae (Day of Wrath).

A Symphonic Night at the Movies is a production of PGM Productions, Inc. (New York) and appears by arrangement with IMG Artists.

OHN GOBERMAN is probably best known as the creator and founding producer of LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER. This award-winning series of television specials has brought the finest of the performing arts to American audiences for over 35 years.

To produce the series, Mr. Goberman developed the video and audio techniques and technology by which concerts, opera, ballets and plays can be telecast during live performances without disruption of performers and audiences.

He has produced more than 200 national performing arts specials with the constituents of Lincoln Center, from the New York City Ballet to the New York Philharmonic with programs ranging from Genius has a Birthday: Stravinsky and Balanchine to Marsalis on Armstrong. As Executive Producer/Television for Lincoln Center, he also produced a companion series, BACKSTAGE\LINCOLN CENTER, as an introduction to the performing arts including “This Old Cello”, with Yo-Yo Ma and “Stagefright” with Luciano Pavarotti.

He is also the creator of a new form of film/concert presentation, symphonic cinema, performing 20th century symphonic works composed for film and orchestra, consisting of the film classics ALEXANDER NEVSKY and SCENES FROM IVAN THE TERRIBLE, selected offerings from Hollywood films in the presentation of A SYMPHONIC NIGHT AT THE MOVIES (A Night at the Oscars, Great Loves of the Silver Screen, Screen Classics, Hitchcock, Gotta Dance! and Rodgers and Hammerstein at the Movies) and the latest additions, the full-length feature films Wizard of Oz and Psycho, Casablanca and Singin’ in the Rain. ir Edward Elgar grew up in suburban Worcestershire, in the south of England, helping his dad at the musical instrument shop, where he learned to play and repair most instruments.

His other great passion was taking long bike rides through the countryside on a Royal Sunbeam he dubbed “Phoebus.” The premiere of his Enigma Variations in 1899 brought him national attention at age forty-three, and soon he was downright famous. One of the most wellknown movements of the Enigma variations is dedicated to his good friend August Jaeger, an employee of the London music publisher Novello. When Jaeger passed away from long illness at age forty-nine, Elgar wrote this quiet Elegy in his memory.

Astor Piazzolla was born outside of Buenos Aires but lived in New York City from the age of four until his return to Argentina at age fifteen. His dad bought him his first bandoneón when he was eight, and it was this instrument—the heart of every tango band— with which he would become so closely associated.

Piazzolla’s aspiration was to imbue the language of tango with the elements of contemporary composition, and to this end he studied with Alberto Ginastera in Argentina and the renowned teacher Nadia Boulanger in Paris.

Piazzolla composed a work he called Verano porteño for his quintet, initially as part of a set of incidental pieces for a play (residents of Buenos Aires refer to themselves as porteños, and Verano means summer). When it became popular on its own, it was natural to complete the set of four seasons. The sold-out 1970 premiere was released as an astounding live LP. A few years after Piazzolla’s death, violinist Gidon Kremer commissioned Leonid Desyatnikov to arrange them for solo violin and string orchestra. Desyatnikov made some composerly additions and revisions of his own, heightening the degree to which Vivaldi’s baroque exemplars are intertwined with tango elements. Just remember, the seasons are opposite in the Southern Hemisphere! So in Verano Porteño you will hear quotes from Vivaldi’s Winter.

The harp found in orchestras today can trace its lineage as far back as human civilization. But its current form was the result of certain technical innovations which occurred in France in the nineteenth century.

The double-action pedal harp, which granted performers the ability to play each of the chromatic notes of the scale, was patented in 1810 by a piano maker, Sébastien Érard.

It featured seven pedals, each with three positions.

A competing design by Gustave Lyon, based on crossstrung models popular in renaissance Spain, was produced by the Pleyel piano firm in 1897 and for awhile the two very different designs co-existed. Pleyel carried immense cachet in the musical life of France at the time, producing more than 2500 pianos annually and producing concerts at the Salle Pleyel, where Chopin had performed. Their marketing acumen led them to approach the most esteemed composer of the time, Claude Debussy, to write something to showcase their frightening two-headed instrument. His response was Danses sacree et profane, or Dances sacred and profane, premiered in 1904. Fortunately Debussy’s piece can be played on an Erard-style pedal harp, for that is the design which has proven fittest through natural selection. The two dances are joined into one continuous movement.

In the eighteenth century, noble and aristocratic Venetian families were watching their fortunes dwindle away as trade now focused on Atlantic routes. The specter of poverty and civic unrest were kept in check by the carnevale, akin to New Orleans’ Mardi Gras but occupying almost half the calendar year. One of the products of so many masked bacchanales was a proliferation of orphans.

Consequently, a small group of orphanages operated by the church grew into institutions of great wealth and prestige; chief among these was the Ospedale della pietá.

The girls of this institution were given instruction in music, and their school ensemble developed into what was for a time the finest orchestra in Europe. For the better part of his professional career, Vivaldi was their leader and teacher, and supplied music for them to play— so much music! There are multiple Vivaldi concertos for almost every instrument of the modern orchestra plus many now obsolete. His Four Seasons are four violin concertos, in three movements each (fast-slow-fast), and accompanied in the original publication with a set of four sonnets describing those seasonal items each of the concertos depicts. The success of these works today is a testament to how effective Vivaldi’s portrayal of natural phenomena still are; we easily hear the crispness of autumn air, the barking of a shepherd’s dog, and the flurry of a winter snowstorm.

ne of Broadway’s biggest personalities, Debbie Gravitte received the Tony Award for her critically acclaimed performance in Jerome Robbins Broadway, along with the New York Showstopper Award and a Drama Desk Award nomination. She made her Broadway debut in the original cast of They’re Playing Our Song, and went on to appear in: Blues In The Night, Perfectly Frank (Drama Desk Award Nomination), Zorba, Ain’t Broadway Grand?, Chicago and Les Miserables. Debbie appeared in London in Jerry Herman’s Mack and Mabel at the Drury Lane Theatre. Richard Wagner, that demigod of opera, had a long stretch of very bad luck. He was exiled from his home country of Germany; his marriage was a mess; he was on the run from creditors everywhere; and an opera project in Paris folded after only three performances. But then, two strokes of good fortune materialized. Germany lifted the ban on him in 1862, so he resettled in a small town on the Rhine. And in 1864, eighteen year old Wagner fanatic Ludwig II succeeded to the Bavarian throne. He immediately reached out to Wagner with an offer of patronage and poof! went Wagner’s financial troubles. Now anything he dreamed of could be achieved.

In 1867 he finally completed Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, which he had begun more than twenty years prior. It premiered in Munich on June 21, 1868: almost exactly 150 years ago today.

The prelude - really, an overture - opens with a procession of the medieval meistersingers or master-musician’s guild, cast as a regal brass march. There is to be a singing contest, and the prize is the hand of the goldsmith’s daughter, Eva, represented in the prelude by an ardent love theme.

Wolfgang Mozart (he almost never used the name Amadeus in real life—his actual middle name was Gottlieb) was living in Vienna in 1786. For Lenten services that year, he composed three piano concertos which he considered special enough to keep for himself to perform only, and only for a small circle of connoisseurs. The middle of these is K. 488 in A Major, a key with which Mozart associated a particular warmth. Two clarinets take the place of the usual pair of oboes here, lending a darker shade to the orchestral color.

named Babette von Ployer. Her uncle, an agent of the Salzburg court in Vienna, commissioned Mozart to write two piano concertos for her to play, K. 449 and the present work in G Major, K. 453. For his part, Mozart seems to have been very pleased and not a little charmed by Babette; he brought his friend Paisello with him to the premiere of this concerto to show her off. And he even drew a little portrait of her in the margins of one of his other compositions.

Babette was clearly a very accomplished pianist, and Mozart was able to write for her something he would have been happy to present himself.

As Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky worked on his fourth symphony, he sent progress reports to his patroness and friend Nadezhda von Meck. Of the tattoo motive which opens the symphony, he says, “This is Fate: this is that fateful force which prevents the impulse to happiness from attaining its goal, which jealously ensures that peace and happiness shall not be complete and unclouded [...] It is an invisible force that can never be overcome—merely endured, hopelessly.” Of the first movement’s gentler second theme, heard first in the clarinet and later embroidered by the strings, he writes, “Oh joy! Out of nowhere a sweet and gentle daydream appears. Some blissful, radiant human image hurries by and beckons us away. [...]

Everything gloomy and joyless is forgotten. Here it is—happiness!” But then, “No! These were daydreams, and Fate wakes us from them. [...] No haven exists.

Drift upon that sea until it engulfs us and submerges you in its depths.”

Movement two he describes as “that melancholy feeling which comes in the evening when, weary from one’s toil, one sits alone with a book—but it falls from the hand. There come a whole host of memories.” The ensuing scherzo, with pizzicato strings, he describes as “vague images which can sweep past the imagination after drinking a little wine and feeling the first phases of intoxication. The spirit is neither cheerful, nor sad.” As for the finale, Tchaikovsky tells his muse and benefactress, “If within yourself you find no reasons for joy, then look at others. Picture the festive merriment of ordinary people. Hardly have you managed to forget yourself and to be carried away by the spectacle of the joys of others, than irrepressible fate appears again and reminds you of yourself. But others do not care about you, and they have not noticed that you are solitary and sad.” But in the end, he finds a way to hope. “Reproach yourself, and do not say that everything in this world is sad. Rejoice in the rejoicing of others. To live is still possible.”

SCHMITT MUSIC YOUTH PIANO COMPETITION WINNERS Mingming Song was born in Shanghai, China and is currently an 11 year old seventh grader at D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School in Denver.

Ming began playing the piano at the age of four, and she has been studying piano with Mrs. June Haun for last 2 years.

Ming already has won several prestigious competitions in Colorado. She placed 1st in Advanced Competitive Division 2 in the Schmitt Music 2018 Piano Competition, and tied for 2nd place in the same competition in 2017.

Additionally, she got 2nd place in the Steinway Piano Concerto Competition 2017 and was the soloist for Inside the Orchestra.

Ming also plays violin. She joined the Denver Young Artists Orchestra in 2016 and became concertmaster of String Ensemble of DYAO in 2017/2018. She also is an avid skier and loves to travel with her family.

Raditya Muljadi is 8 years old and he started learning piano from his mother when he was 4. He is currently studying piano with Jasmine Steadman.

His favorite composer is Beethoven.

Raditya won 1st place at the 2015 Schmitt Music Piano Competition (Competitive Division) and the 2016 Rising Star Festival (Lower Elementary division) by CSMTA. In 2017 he won 2nd place at Schmitt Competition (Advanced Competitive). He placed 1st at 2018 Schmitt Piano Competition (Advanced Competitive).

Raditya will be in 4th grade this year at Ascent Classical School in Parker. His favorite subjects are Mathematics and Reading. He also loves Tae Kwon Do, camping, swimming, and skiing.

escribed by ´The Herald´ as “extremely good, concise, clear, incisive and expressive” David Danzmayr is widely regarded as one of the most talented and exciting European conductors of his generation.

David is currently in his fourth and final season as Music Director of the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra in Chicago, where he was lauded regularly by both the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Classical Review for his programming of American composers as well as the quality of performances he and the orchestra achieved together.

Upon leaving his position at the IPO, he will assume the position of Chief Conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra beginning with the 2016/17 season. As Chief Conductor Designate he will lead numerous concerts with the ZPO this season, including a concert at the Salzburg Festspielhaus on New Year’s Day, as well as a tour to Italy.

The National Repertory Orchestra holds a concerto competition at the beginning of each summer for the orchestra members. The competition winner(s) will be announced on the day of the performance.

ustav Mahler’s first important conducting post was in the small German city of Kassel.

While there, he developed a painful crush on the soprano Johanne Richter, and this heartbreak inspired his song-cycle Songs of a Wayfarer. A few years later, he had his heart broken again—this time by Frau von Weber, the wife of the grandson of arguably the first great German Romantic composer, Carl Maria von Weber.

These two romantic failures are the seeds for the First Symphony, and there is a complex involvement with the material from two songs from the Wayfarer cycle. Like many composers before and since, Mahler was reluctant to reveal the hidden stories behind his orchestral works, writing, “no music is of any value if its pre-musical experiences first have to be reported to the listener… A residual mystery always remains— even for the creator himself!” Yet in early performances of the present work, he distributed a program that described the scenes presented in each movement.

The Symphony is full of nature imagery of a particularly posed and idealized sort, tinged with a sense of nostalgia and lost innocence.

In the introduction to the first movement, a Moravian dawn setting softly resounds with birdcalls and hunting-horns. Mahler wrote that these are “memories of youth”, and “nature’s awakening from its long winter sleep.” The principal theme that emerges is a quotation from the second of the Wayfarer songs, corresponding to a short-lived moment when the protagonist finds joy in nature.

Eventually a mist descends and fragments of birdcalls are heard over ominous tones from the double basses and brass. After a joyful return of the song theme, exuberant shouts from the brass prove contagious to the whole orchestra.

Mahler chooses the more rustic ländler dance form over the dainty minuet or more rambunctious scherzo for the second movement, in which the birdcall ideas of the first movement morph into yodels.

The more gentle and sensuous central section begins with a simple, oscillating horn gesture.

The third movement begins as a depiction of a woodcut Mahler liked, in which forest creatures are engaged in a mock-funeral procession for a fallen woodsman. The tune is a minor-mode version of Frére Jacques, heard first from the double basses and then treated as a round; squirrels, deer, and raccoons somberly trudge by. But in a surreal twist, Mahler juxtaposes this with a deliciously crude dance tune (actually a variation of the dirge) played by the oboes and trumpets. A Yiddish café band interrupts, and the two dances are crosscut jarringly. This episode is rounded off with a reprise of the funeral march, now sullied somewhat. The harp introduces a walking tempo, and then a melody of aching sweetness appears, passed from the flutes to the violins. Its origin lies once again in the Wayfarer songs, where it accompanied lines about the heartsick wanderer finding rest beneath a linden tree whose petals symbolically snow their narcotic comfort down on him.

“A cry from a wounded heart” is how Mahler described the opening of the Finale to his Hamburg audience. After the catharsis of the first section, a luxuriously supple theme unfolds. Subsequently there is a lull, and then we are hurled violently into a great struggle; the home tonal plateau of D Major, not experienced since the first movement, is reached amid celebrations from brass and percussion. Mahler withdraws from this peak sadly, and takes us on a flashback tour of the important themes of the previous movements. The true climax of the movement and the Symphony comes, as Mahler wrote, like a trip from “hell to paradise.”

ochester, NY, native Dan Welcher is one of his generation’s most-performed composers.

A Celebratory Overture was commissioned in 2016 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of KMFA, an independent classical radio station—yes, a few of these still exist!—in Austin, Texas. The opening fanfare is a four-note motto derived from the station’s call letters: K becomes C, M becomes G, plus F and A. This figure is then turned upside down and reworked as a gentle melody. After an eerie string glissando and a short pause, the overture becomes an impatient radio listener, scanning through channels. Snippets of drive-time favorites such as Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Pachelbel’s Canon, The William Tell Overture, and many more, including bits from three Beethoven symphonies, are brilliantly interwoven.

Often, being original in art means turning convention on its head. In 1807, when Beethoven premiered his Fourth Piano Concerto, the customs of the concerto genre were ingrained in performers and audiences, as those of the rom-com are in us. Listeners waited to hear when the soloist would enter; and when the soloist stopped playing, they anticipated their return. It was only a matter of time before Beethoven tossed this protocol aside completely.

And so, the audience at the premiere of the Fourth Concerto would have been shocked to hear this work open with soft, contemplative solo piano. After this gentle but altogether revolutionary statement, the orchestra responds nervously—and from three football fields away, harmonically (they answer in B major, whereas the piano had introduced itself in G). Soon however, the second violins set up an oscillating rhythm and the piece begins to settle into itself. Of his five mature concertos, this one is Beethoven’s most serene and poetic, and the one which lives the most in a world of fantasy.

As distinctive as the opening of its first movement is, the second movement is what truly sets Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto apart. The whole thing is an extended rhetorical contest between a threatening, pessimistic string chorus and the noble piano.

The generally bouncy finale brings some respite from all this struggle.

“He was a six-and-a-half foot scowl,” said Igor Stravinsky of his compatriot Sergei Rachmaninoff, and it’s true that there are very few photographs of the Russian piano virtuoso and composer seeming glad.

Despite his enviable career conducting and performing his own music across Russia and Europe and, for the last half of his life, in the US, there were plenty of things to worry Rachmaninoff, even in the years before World War I and the Russian Revolution. His childhood was marked by the disastrous squandering of his family’s considerable fortune at the hands of his feckless father, the loss of family home after family home, the death of his sister in a typhoid outbreak, and his parent’s separation. Piano possibly saved him; failing all other subjects, he was accepted into a highly competitive but ruthlessly strict piano studio in Moscow, where he also began to study counterpoint. He wound up graduating a year early and with the highest honors. Success piled up: his first piano concerto, his first opera (which even Tchaikovsky praised), successful tours and his London debut. But when his first real setback came, whatever fragile confidence Rachmaninoff had dared to harbor collapsed. This was the disastrous premiere of his first symphony. One reviewer described it as something written in a conservatory in hell. Rachmaninoff would not attempt another for ten years, and only after a great struggle to break his creative block. Friends insisted he see noted psychiatrist Dr. Nikolai Dahl, who specialized in post-hypnotic suggestion, and gradually the floodgates re-opened. (Rachmaninoff dedicated his second piano concerto to Dahl.) After awhile Rachmaninoff felt confident enough to take up the prospect of a symphony again. Its premiere in January 1908 was a triumph.

The first movement begins with a low strings motto which will crop up throughout this lengthy symphony and contribute to a sense of interconnectedness, punctuating the many passages of utterly sumptuous romantic melody. We find Rachmaninoff all smiles in the bright and vivacious Scherzo which follows, yet there in the middle is another one of those smoldering love tunes. Even this is overtopped by the ravishing passion of the slow movement, however. These thirteen minutes of music alone built concert halls around the world (and have accompanied countless hi-fi, fireside, bearskin-rug scenes). The finale turns its attention at first to dancing and jubilation. Rachmaninoff crafts yet another irresistible “big tune” for this movement, and it is this which closes the symphony, in tall octaves across the orchestra.
