The Provincial Towns Cup is one of the oldest trophies in existence in Irish rugby union. The competition has a rich history and has been played for over a century. First established in 1888, the trophy itself bears the title of the Leinster Junior Challenge Cup.
In 1925, the Leinster branch of the IRFU reorganised its junior competitions and the Leinster Junior Challenge Cup became the Provincial Towns Cup. It was changed to a knock-out competition for junior clubs from outside Dublin and remains so to this day.
The Provincial Towns Cup is regarded as a prestigious and competitive tournament, traditionally attracting large crowds and media attention The cup is a source of great pride and passion in local communities. This year is the 98th Provincial Towns Cup, played every year since 1926 except for 2020 & 2021 due to the pandemic.
Today’s hosts have appeared in five cup finals, with one win way back in 1930, beating Athy 6-3 to lift the trophy. Their last appearance in the final was in 1966, losing out to Navan on that occasion on a scoreline of 8-3.
