The all-time bestselling video game Minecraft was created by Swedish developers–but not by their efforts alone. Minecraft's programmers made swathes of the game's code open source, inviting, even encouraging, global collaboration. This ethos mirrors the game's mission: collaborate with your community to build a never-before-known world together, then thrive in it.

All Cultures Play Them All Generations Create Their Own Since antiquity, games have brought people together. Over boards, tables, or screens, we strategize, wile, and relish. Games do more than just tease our brains. Cultural artifacts, they’re also vectors for connection. This year, Hopkins Press celebrates games as a metaphor for what we do in the Journals division. Our titles span subjects from poetry to the social sciences, Ancient Greece to Modernism. Some are startup journals, just a few volumes old. Others have been established for generations and evolved through decades. But no matter when they’re written or how they’re read, our journals, like games, connect curious minds.

Journal of Late Antiquity

Andrew Cain, University of Colorado, Boulder /Editor Judith Evans-Grubbs, Emory University; Danuta Shanzer, University of Vienna; and Dennis Trout, University of Missouri /Associate Editors

Journal of Late Antiquity (JLA) is the award-winning first international English-language journal dedicated to the study of Late Antiquity writ large. The Journal provides a venue for multi-disciplinary coverage of all the methodological, geographical, and chronological facets of Late Antiquity. All of Late Antiquity will be represented — from the late and post-classical world up to the Carolingian period, and including the late Roman, western European, Byzantine, Sassanid, and Islamic worlds, ca. 250-800 CE. JLA is essential, not only as a space for scholarship dealing with practical and theoretical issues, but, in particular, to bridge the gap between literary and material culture scholarship. One of the primary goals of the journal is to highlight the status of Late Antiquity as a discrete historical period in its own right. JLA honors include the Association of American Publishers PROSE Award for Professional and Scholarly Excellence as Best New Journal in the Social Sciences & Humanities for 2010, Honorable Mention/Runner-Up for Best New Journal in 2009 by the Council of Editors of Learned Journals. JLA also is a two-time winner (2013 and 2019) of the Codex Award, given once per year by the Council of Editors of Learned Journals in recognition of the best journal on any subject before 1500. The Sewanee Review

Adam Ross, The University of the South /Editor

Founded in 1892 by the teacher and critic William Peterfield Trent, The Sewanee Review is America’s oldest continuously published literary quarterly. Many of the twentieth century’s great writers, including T. S. Eliot, William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Wallace Stevens, Saul Bellow, Katherine Anne Porter, Marianne Moore, and Ezra Pound, have appeared in the magazine. SR also has a long tradition of cultivating emerging talent: we published excerpts of Cormac McCarthy and Flannery O’Connor’s first novels, and the early poetry of Robert Penn Warren, Sylvia Plath, Robert Lowell, and Christian Wiman. “Whatever the new literature turns out to be,” wrote editor Allen Tate in 1944, “it will be the privilege of The Sewanee Review to print its share of it, to comment on it, and to try to understand it.” The mission remains unchanged. In 2017 the novelist Adam Ross (Mr. Peanut, Ladies and Gentlemen) succeeded George Core as editor of The Sewanee Review. Under Ross’s tenure, the magazine was redesigned for the first time in seventy-three years, by the book designers Peter Mendelsund and Oliver Munday, and SR began to publish online as well as in print. 2017 also marked The Sewanee Review’s 125th year of publication, and Fall 2017 marked the magazine’s five-hundredth issue. The magazine’s redesign and recent issues have been covered by The New York Times, Nashville Scene, in The Memphis Commercial-Appeal, Poets & Writers, Chapter 16, and elsewhere. Published 4 times per year in Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Volume 130 (2022). P-ISSN: 0037-3052 /E-ISSN: 1934-421X.

Social Research An International Quarterly

Arien Mack, The New School for Social Research /Editor

Social Research has its origins in the New School's historic effort to provide intellectuals safe haven as the Nazis began to threaten Jewish scholars prior to the onset of WWII. This group of rescued scholars, known as the University in Exile, launched Social Research: An International Quarterly of the Political and Social Sciences in 1934 on the core conviction that every true university must have its own distinct public voice. Today, that profound voice resonates in each issue, as multidisciplinary scholars, writers, and experts take on contentious social issues, countries in transition, and phenomena that seem ripe for exploration. Periodic special issues are devoted to the proceedings of the journal's renowned conferences at the New School. Published 4 times per year in Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Volume 89 (2022). Studies in American Fiction

Maria Farland, Fordham University and Duncan Faherty, Queens College and the CUNY Graduate Center /Editors Paul Thifault, Springfield College and Sara Jane Stoner, CUNY Graduate Center /Managing Editors

Studies in American Fiction (SAF) publishes reviews and articles on a wide temporal range in American fiction: from neglected and rediscovered early U.S. writers (Susanna Rowson, Leonora Sansay, James Hall) to the emergent authors of the present day (Katherine Dunn, Ana Menéndez, Monique Truong, Toni Morrison). Expect its refereed articles to feature not only major canonical works by Charles Brockden Brown, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Edith Wharton, and Thomas Pynchon, but scholarly analyses of contemporary Chicano literature and Harlem Renaissance fiction. Engendering conversations about forms of writing that do not succumb to traditional genres, SAF interrogates and redraws both generic and geographic boundaries. SAF is the only journal encompassing American literature from the North American colonial past to the United States' globalized present. Published 2 times per year in Spring and Fall. A Rewarding Partnership When you publish with Johns Hopkins University Press, you engage with a partner experienced in navigating the challenges and breakthroughs in publishing with intelligence and innovative thinking. We offer streamlined production—copyediting and typesetting to final print and electronic versions—along with unsurpassed creativity in marketing and public relations. We have received awards and top honors from industry organizations such as MarCom, Hermes, the Public Relations Society of America, and the Council of Editors of Learned Journals in recognition of our work in marketing, design, and publishing. But awards, while gratifying, are not our goal. Simply put, we aim to exceed our customers’ expectations in customer service, fulfillment, membership services, renewals, marketing, and promotion. “We moved to JHUP two years ago and are still congratulating ourselves on having made this decision. The transition was very smooth and the journal’s layout and style did not have to be changed. I appreciate in particular the stability of JHUP’s staff structure, with one, very responsive editor assigned to our journal, without the intercession of an unwieldy automated “article management system.” Hence communication between press and journal is very swift, direct, and personal, making my job as journal editor much easier. Another significant benefit of our move was the journal’s inclusion in Project Muse, which enhanced its visibility and impact, and has led to a significant increase in manuscript submissions.”

“I have edited a Johns Hopkins University Press journal for over 25 years. Such loyalty is inspired by the generous responsiveness of the leadership as well as the creativity and commitment of individual staff members. Just recently JHUP collaborated with us towards a complete revamping of our journal’s, and associated society’s, website. Their enthusiasm during this round was greater than when we started in 1994!” —John Z. Sadler, Editor-In-Chief Philosophy, Psychiatry & Psychology

Our Vision

To honor our commitments to our partners, our patrons and each other, and to embrace innovation and inclusion as we aspire to become the leading journal publisher in the humanities and social sciences, not just in the university press community but also the larger world of scholarly publishing.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide publishing and membership services that add value to the intellectual content created by scholars in a variety of disciplines and to support the associations that play a critical role in advancing academic discourse. We seek publishing opportunities that emulate the academic and cultural values of Johns Hopkins University. In addition, we are eager to partner with other divisions within the University to fulfill the core mission of Hopkins Press and to extend the University’s influence beyond its geographical confines. It is through these efforts that scholarship assumes a larger voice, achieves a wider reach, and realizes a greater impact. We challenge ourselves to always listen to our partners and to provide creative solutions that help them advance and realize their goals. We achieve this mission through the efforts of our customer service, production, marketing, and digital publishing professionals, who collectively are committed to sharing their knowledge and expertise with the Journals and Associations we serve.

Like a round of backgammon on the beach, a single game may have a short lifespan. But every new round marks a new entry in the personal history of its players and the collective history of the game. Similarly, as each new issue of a journal is published, the research and knowledge within its pages builds on what came before. The collaborative, generative nature of scholarly research creates connections across continents and centuries. It is our privilege to help make these enduring connections possible, with every new issue, and every new round.
