Free First Aid Training for Childrens Sports Clubs Do you know a club that could benefit from FREE first aid training?

For the last six months we’ve been helping to make sport safer for young people in the Neath Port Talbot Borough by offering free first aid training courses. So far, 17 clubs and 41 people have benefited; including rugby and football clubs, basketball teams and martial art groups.

If you know a club that could benefit from the training, why not sign up for the next session being held in May? The training sessions are run by Hands on First Aid Training. The date will be confirmed closer to the time.

Community Challenge 2015 We launched our 2015 Community Challenge in the last edition of The Grapevine and received eight applications.

Each application was reviewed by representatives from each of our contractors, along with tenants Denise Davies and Anthony Thomas from the POWER Group.

Keeping Your Information Up to Date It is important that your details are correct when benefits are calculated and that you let the relevant benefits department know when things change.

If you claim benefits you need to inform the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Council and/or HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) of any changes to your circumstances. If you fail to keep the authorities up-to-date with changes you could be overpaid and even accused of fraud. You may also not get paid money that you are entitled to.

NPT Homes Donates Five Food Hampers Since the last edition of The Grapevine, NPT Homes and one its main contractors, Mi-space, donated food and festive treats to two tenants and The Vale of Neath Food Bank in Glynneath.

Local food banks, Pantry in Pontardawe and the Port Talbot Food Bank based in Carmel Chapel in Port Talbot, also benefited from the donations later in the month.

Port Talbot Food Bank Manager, Bethan Davies, said:

“The generosity of NPT Homes and others over the year has been breath-taking. Food banks are extremely busy and the extra food donations allowed local families to put a hot, healthy meal on the table.”

NPT Homes’ Chief Executive, Linda Whittaker, said:

“NPT Homes is committed to supporting local people within Neath, Port Talbot and Pontardawe. This is one of the many ways we like to give something back to those living in the community in which we operate.”

2015 AGM Our fourth official Annual General Members’ Meeting (AGM) will be held on Tuesday 28th July at NPT Homes’ Head Office Ty^ Gwyn in Baglan Energy Park.

The AGM is an opportunity for you to shape the future of the organisation and its services by voting on key decisions.

It will also allow you to find out more about the various services available to tenants and leaseholders.

We want to understand our tenants’ needs as fully as possible and you’re in the best position to help us do this. By working together, we can deliver the services that matter to you and ultimately become the landlord of choice.

Changes to the Board

Board

2015 began with three changes to the Board. Firstly, Hilary Griffiths, a tenant co-optee, announced in January that she would be resigning. I would like to personally thank Hilary for her hard work and commitment to NPT Homes over the past four years and prior to that as a member of the Shadow Board.

Secondly Ellen Greed, a tenant member, also announced that she would be resigning from the Board. I am pleased to say, however, that Ellen will continue to be involved with NPT Homes on a more operational level and we look forward to working with her in the future.

Thirdly it gives me great pleasure to welcome Helen James to the Board. Helen has been co-opted to the Board to cover the independent vacancy. Helen was born in Port Talbot and brings a wealth of experience to the role, having worked as a chartered surveyor for over 25 years.

Come on Board We are now looking for tenant Board Members. If you are a tenant interested in making a contribution to the strategic running and development of NPT Homes, please contact the Corporate Governance Team on 01639 505857.

Approval of the Shared Lettings Policy The Board finalised its approval of the Shared Lettings Policy in January. This policy was created in partnership with Neath Port Talbot Council and details changes to how we allocate our properties. The biggest change is the removal of the points system and the introduction of a banding system. We believe the changes will make our allocation process fairer and ensure those in need get the housing they require. The new allocation system will be introduced in April 2015. More information is on page 18.

Universal Credit As you might be aware, the UK Government is rolling out Universal Credit, starting on Monday 13th April in Neath Port Talbot for single people under 60 and a half years old claiming: - Income-based Job seekers allowance (JSA) and - Income-based JSA (with Housing Benefit).

If your circumstances change or if you are a new claimant of the above benefits you will need to apply for Universal Credit.

The Board is keeping up-to-date with how Universal Credit may affect NPT Homes and its tenants and we are ensuring that we are as prepared as possible for the changes. Discretionary Housing Payments for ‘Bedroom Tax’ The Social Sector Size Criteria (‘Bedroom Tax’) was introduced on 1st April 2013 and still affects many NPT Homes tenants of working age. If you have reached state pension age, this will not affect you.

Discretionary Housing Payment is not a long term solution to the Bedroom Tax. The length of an award for Discretionary Housing

The Bedroom Tax is applied to your housing benefit if you are believed to have more bedrooms than you need. The reduction for one extra bedroom is 14% of your eligible rent and for two or more extra bedrooms is 25% of your eligible rent.

We have helped many of our tenants to apply for Discretionary Housing Payments. This is a fund available through Housing Benefit and is available to claimants who require additional help towards their housing costs. An application form is available from the Benefits Section of the Council or from NPT Homes. It requests details of your income and expenditure

Changes to How Our Properties are Allocated Policy Approved As mentioned in the autumn edition of The Grapevine, NPT Homes and Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council (NPTCBC) have been working with tenants and applicants through a number of interactive workshops to review their Shared Lettings Policy.

After a full consultation period and approval from relevant Boards and committees, the revised Shared Lettings Policy has now been approved and will apply from Monday 6th April 2015.

What Does This Mean?

What is the Shared Letting Policy?

The Shared Lettings Policy is a key document which sets out: • How the housing register will operate • Who is eligible for housing • How to apply for accommodation • How applicants’ housing needs are assessed and • How NPT Homes allocates accommodation.

What Are The Changes?

The changes ensure that the policy truly reflects housing needs in the local communities.

Some of the key changes include: • The introduction of a needsbased banding system where applicants are placed in the band which reflects the level of their housing need - the higher the housing need, the higher the band.

Recipe: Chickpea and Coriander Burgers (www.bbcgoodfood.com)

Be kind to your waistline and your pocket with this cheap and easy take on a classic burger. High in fibre, low in fat and counting as two of your 5-a-day, trying to be healthy on a budget has never been easier.

Serves: 4 Prep time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes

Method:

Ingredients: • 400g can chickpeas, drained • zest 1 lemon, plus juice of 1/2 • 1 tsp ground cumin • small bunch coriander, chopped • 1 egg • 100g fresh breadcrumbs • 1 medium red onion, 1/2 diced, 1/2 sliced • 1 tbsp olive oil • 4 small wholemeal buns • 1 large tomato, sliced, 1/2 cucumber, sliced and chilli sauce, to serve

1. Mash the chickpeas, lemon zest, lemon juice, cumin, half the coriander, the egg and some seasoning together with a fork. Scrape into a bowl and mix with 80g of the breadcrumbs and the diced onions. Form 4 burgers, press remaining breadcrumbs onto both sides and chill for at least 10 minutes.

2. Heat the oil in a frying pan until hot. Fry the burgers for 4 minutes each side, keeping the heat on medium so they don’t burn. To serve, slice each bun and fill with a slice of tomato, a burger, a few red onion slices, some cucumber slices, a dollop of chilli sauce and the remaining coriander.
