The new College boasts nine campuses covering 30 per cent of the country’s land mass and reaching 270,000 residents from south to north Wales. We now provide one of the widest ranges of subject choices for learners in Wales with courses that appeal to all ages and interests. Higher Education is provided in 6 campuses across the College. Our Neath and Afan Colleges are ten minutes by road from Swansea with its stunning coastal scenery, lively nightlife and fantastic shopping; 30 minutes by road from Wales’ capital city, Cardiff; and two and a half hours by train from London. Our Brecon Beacons College is located in the midst of the Brecon Beacons National Park. It is set in the shadow of a beautiful, rough and dramatic landscape that is draped in legend, stories and Welsh tradition. You can explore this beautiful scenery or travel to nearby historical Hereford and Gloucester. Newtown College is based in the heart of mid Wales and is only one hour by road to Birmingham; one hour forty-five minutes from Liverpool; and just two hours from Manchester. Nestling on the banks of the river Severn, Newtown is a pretty market town with a rich industrial heritage, surrounded by beautiful countryside. Access to Higher Education

Foundation Degree

Degree BA (Hons) and BSc (Hons)

If you have had a break from education or do not quite meet the entry requirements for a Higher Education course or you have not studied for a while then an Access Programme gives you the perfect preparation for studying at Degree level. A Foundation Degree combines academic study with workplace learning. Designed in association with employers, they are qualifications to equip people with the relevant skills, knowledge and understanding to achieve academic results as well as improve performance and productivity in the workplace. Foundation Degrees focus on a particular job or profession and are intended to increase the professional and technical skills of current or potential staff within a profession. An academic degree can be earned at many levels, the College offers three-year BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) programmes. Top-up degree programmes are of one-year duration and provide the third year following a Foundation Degree or HND programme.

A Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diplomas (HND) are work-related qualifications that combine theory and practical hands on experience. They are highly valued by employers and a HNC can usually take two years part-time or one year full-time to complete and you can progress onto a HND or a Foundation Degree. A HND is generally recognised as the equivalent to two years at university and you can usually progress directly onto the third year of a relevant degree programme. The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education and Professional Certificate in Education are for those who would like to pursue a teaching role within post16 education. You will be challenged to explore theories of teaching and learning and to examine the implications of such theories for your own development. The course itself focuses on harnessing your abilities as a teacher, and not on the subject that you intend to teach once you pass. A Professional Certificate in Education does not require a degree and is essential if you would like to pursue a career in teaching.

HOW TO APPLY FULL-TIME COURSES Applications for all full-time UCAS courses should be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions System (UCAS) using the online ‘apply’ system. Students are advised to apply as early as possible. UCAS can start receiving applications from as early as September each year. FEES & FUNDING Higher Education Tuition Fees

Higher Education Hardship Fund

Tuition fees are available in the Higher Eduction Fees and Financial Support document on the College website www.nptcgroup.ac.uk/he-documents. You need to consider how you are going to pay the tuition fees of your programme. These are payable annually. You can either pay the tuition fee or you can apply to defer payment by taking out a Tuition Fee Loan.

The Higher Education Hardship Fund is a discretionary fund administered by Student Services to help Higher Education students who are experiencing genuine and unavoidable financial difficulties. The fund is available for those in receipt of the full student loan and maintenance grant only. Applications are meanstested and therefore some applications will be unsuccessful.

If you have not already applied for a student loan, it is advisable to submit your application as soon as possible. You do this directly with Student Finance Wales: www.studentfinancewales.co.uk/new-students.aspx. To complete your student loan application, you will need your UK Passport number (or birth certificate if you do not have a valid passport), National Insurance number and your bank details. The Tuition Fee Loan is paid directly by the Student Loans Company directly to the College. You will then repay that loan when you have left the course and start earning over £25,000 per year. Student Finance Wales also operates a Special Support Grant, Adult Dependent Grant, Childcare Grant and Parents’ Learning Allowance. If you have any additional course-related costs due to a disability, you might be entitled to additional help through the Disabled Students’ Allowance. If you withdraw from your programme before it is concluded, you may still be liable for some/all of the annual tuition fee. Table 1, details the percentage of tuition fee payable dependent on the date of withdrawal.

Additional Costs Additional costs are the mandatory or optional expenses, additional to tuition fees, that need to be paid for by learners to fully participate and complete their studies. You are required to provide sufficient stationery to support your teaching and learning. Printing charges are 0.02p per black and white A4 and 0.06p for a colour A4. On enrolment, you are allocated £3.00 for printing costs on your student ID card. Additional credits can be purchased in the libraries. If your programme requires a DBS check, this is an additional cost. Programmes that include work placements may incur travelling costs. The expectation is that students arrange the work placements themselves so any costs will depend on where you arrange to work. This may influence your decisions on the placements you choose. Further additional costs are shown on the individual programmes.

BURSARY INFORMATION The purpose of the Higher Education Student Bursary scheme is to provide full-time Higher Education students with financial assistance towards the cost of studying their Higher Education qualification. Bursary applications are made on an annual basis by the College. Students who are studying on a two or three year programme will need to reapply for the second/third year if applicable. The Higher Education student bursary is not available for repeating students. Bursary applications should be made online through the College’s Moodle site (Higher Education Help section) by 18 October 2018. The site will be live for bursary applications from 1 September 2018. Late bursary applications will NOT be considered. Notification of successful applications will be made by 30 November 2018 and payment will be made by 15 February 2018.

Fee-paying international students A bursary is guaranteed for all Looked after Children and Care Leavers* on a full-time higher education programme. Students will need to provide proof from their Local Authority/Social Worker/Leaving Care Team that they fulfil the criteria. *Definition of a Looked after Child and Care leaver for funding purposes: http://www.buttleuk.org/pages/legaldefinitions.html Any applicant who studied at level 5 in 2017/18 who: a) progresses to a top up degree programme at the College for 2018/19; or b) progresses onto year 3 (level 6) of their undergraduate programme. Any applicant who lives in a postcode area that is in the bottom quintile of Lower Super Output Areas in the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation or in Communities First areas. These postcodes are available on the College’s Moodle site under the Higher Education Help section for reference purposes. Enrolment address and postcode will be used for eligibility purposes.

STUDENT VOICE Higher Education Student Voice Capturing the student voice is important to the College. There are many ways in which students can be heard. As you can see in the diagram below, there are a variety of mechanisms designed to capture student feedback, some formal and some informal. Student feedback is considered by the Higher Education Management Group, Vocal Eyes and the Student Strategy Group. These all feed up to top level committees and make change happen!

The course aims to prepare learners to study Business in Higher Education. It provides you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to progress to Higher Education or to enhance your employment potential.

A range of interactive and learner led methods are employed to ensure stimulation and development of all learners. Assessment is undertaken using a range of assessment strategies including presentation, reports, essays, events and class tests.

Applicants should have a positive disposition and deal well with challenges and be motivated, reliable, mature and have evidence of life experience.

Career Prospects Successful completion of the course allows entry into a wide range of degree programmes including Business, Tourism, Finance and Law. In the past, our students have progressed onto degrees at university in Health and Social Care. Completion of the Access to Higher Education course can also be used as evidence of recent study and to seek new career opportunities.

The course is designed to provide specialist, workrelated units for the computing and IT sector. The Computing & IT Diploma provides career development opportunities and a clear progression route to higher education, degree and professional development programmes within the Computing and IT area.

Students will cover a range of core subjects in modules such as Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Physics and Mathematics. This Science qualification is designed for learners wishing to make their careers in local government, National Health Trusts, Ministry of Defence, Police Forces, schools, FE colleges and universities, analytical and forensic laboratories, environmental conservation agencies, telecom agencies, oil and gas companies.

§ Small-scale Research Projects in Public Services (PS) § Organisations and Behaviour in the PS § Government, Decision Making and the PS § Health and Safety Management in the PS § Personal Outdoor Skills, Custodial Care Services in the PS § Fair Treatment in the PS § Emergency Planning, Technology and the PS § Aspects of Criminal Law, Crime Reduction and Community Safety § Justice and Punishment § Personal and Professional Development. In the second year, students may be able to complete the certificate in Knowledge of Policing (CKP) and will have the option to complete the Security Industry Authority Security Licence (at an additional cost) which allows holders to legally work in the security and events industry.
