Student Success Amber Rogers

Pathology Apprentice, Singleton Hospital, Abertawe Bro Morgannwg (ABMU) Amber, 22, from Llanelli began her career in the healthcare sector on the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Pathology Support with ABMU at Singleton Hospital, Swansea and Pathways Training after deciding there was more to life than working at her local DIY store. A typical day for Amber can see her prepare samples and work alongside biomedical scientists to label specimens on the dissection bench. It was this hands-on working approach and a newly found enthusiasm for the sector that made juggling other demanding commitments outside of work worth it to ensure that she could continue doing what she enjoyed so much, which at times was demanding. Amber was one of the first learners in Wales to complete the Pathology Support qualification and is now classed as a healthcare scientist in her own right, securing a permanent position within the ABMU and recent promotion on top. She is an advocate for use of apprenticeships within ABMU Health Board and is also a mentor to the new apprentices within the pathology department.

"Apprenticeships are great for those people who leave school wanting to work. You get to train onsite, build up your skillset as well as getting a qualification. My apprenticeship with Pathways Training and the ABMU has given me a career I love and opened a world of new opportunities. I am currently a healthcare scientist and will now go onto my Level 4 with the possibility to become a Biomedical Scientist." Amber Rogers

"NPTC Group of Colleges have worked with ABMU Health Board’s Apprentice Academy for over two and a half years and we are very proud of all our apprentices who have achieved their qualifications and moved into permanent roles. For our organisation employing apprentices to train into roles is a fantastic way for us to ‘grow our own’ staff ensuring that they have the skills, knowledge and ability to develop their career with us."

“It feels amazing to get these grades, all the hard work paid off. The support from lecturers has been incredible – I don’t think I would have even applied to Cambridge without the influence and guidance of my lecturer. I owe a lot to his support, especially with my application and personal statement."

Science and Maths With a career in Science or Maths you could make a difference to society. You could find a cure for a deadly illness or develop an exciting, new product to name just two of the endless possibilities. We have one of the best equipped departments in the area and a consistent record of excellent results. All the science subjects and mathematics are regarded as "facilitating subjects" by the Russell Group of universities, which means they can be useful for getting onto a wide range of courses at those top universities. Just as languages provide the building blocks and rules we need to communicate, maths uses its own language, made up of numbers, symbols and formulas, to explore the rules we need to measure or identify essential problems like distance, speed, time, space, change, force and quantities. Studying maths helps us find patterns and structure in our lives. Practically, maths helps us put a price on things, create graphics, build websites, build skyscrapers and generally understand how things work or predict how they might change over time and under different conditions.

To maintain in the science field at university, many degrees fall into one of two camps: Biological/Life Sciences and Physical Sciences.

17

Biological/Life Sciences are degrees based on Chemistry and Biology. As long as you choose these two subjects at advanced level, a huge range of degrees will be open to you. These include degrees leading to a definite career path, for example, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Dietetics; and degrees based on research, for example, Biochemistry, Biomedical Materials Science, Pharmacology. Physical Sciences involve the practical application of Mathematics and Physics. As long as you take these two subjects at A Level a huge range of degrees will be open to you, such as: Engineering (mechanical, electronic/electrical and civil), Maths, Physics and Materials Science. If you are a very talented scientist/mathematician, it is important that out of the four available sciences – Biology, Chemistry, Maths (which includes both Mathematics and Further Mathematics) and Physics – it is recommended you should choose three. If you are inclined towards Life Sciences, then you should choose Chemistry and Biology. If you know you are on the Engineering side, you should choose Mathematics (and possibly Further Mathematics) and Physics.

Typical subject combinations and where these can take you. A student who is good at science often chooses Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Physics. This will keep open all the Science/Mathematics options at university.

When considering such implications, it is worth noting that, in the science field at university, many degrees fall into one of two camps: Biological/Life Sciences and Physical Sciences.

For the sake of maintaining a wider outlook on life, however, many students in this category will replace one of the sciences with an arts/humanities subject or a social science.

Applied Science Biomedical scientists develop new treatments and therapies for human illnesses, diseases and disabilities. Operating theatres, accident and emergency (A&E) and many other hospital departments would not function without biomedical scientists. For example, in A&E, you would work in the blood sciences department, testing emergency blood transfusions for blood groups and samples from patients who have overdosed or had a heart attack. Globally, more than US$240bn is spent on biomedical research and development every year (Guardian, 2018), which comes from private and public organisations to explore scientific solutions to health problems across the world. Biomedical science is at the heart of medical breakthroughs in healthcare and could cover anything from creating artificial muscles from cells to treat diseases and illnesses, to looking at the brain to understand stress and anxiety.

What will I do?

This course consists of 60% coursework and 40% is exam based and some of the units are biomedical science, principles and applications of science, genetics, diseases and infection, science investigation skills, laboratory techniques, physiology of human body systems, contemporary issues in science and organic chemistry. There are seven core units and six optional.

Sport Massage Therapies Sports therapists use their knowledge and skills to treat sporting injuries, advise on injury prevention and support rehabilitation, using a range of physical techniques and therapies. Day to day as a sports massage therapist, you can be working with a range of different clients. Depending on whether you are employed or freelance, you could be working with sports professionals or everyday gym goers. You could be treating injuries, which may be longstanding, identifying problem areas early, or help to prevent injuries before they occur.

What will I do?

The aim of our courses is to provide students with the opportunity to learn a range of practical skills that are needed in the field of managing and preventing sports injuries. These skills include sports massage, strapping and taping, fitness testing and rehabilitation of common sports injuries. The underpinning knowledge includes anatomy and physiology, working in a sporting environment and first aid pitch side duties.

Career opportunities

Sports therapy and sports massage have become sought after skills within the fitness industry. Sports massage therapists can help anyone - from athletes to occasional gym users and will need to prevent injuries as much as treat them.
