The College was also ranked second in the whole UK for the quality of teaching, fourth for the learner experience, fifth for providing personal support and 10th for our assessment and feedback. In 2020, the College stormed the awards again, being named as the Top Training Provider in Wales, one of the Top Ten Training Providers in the UK and shortlisted for three categories; the Top Apprenticeship Provider in the UK; Best Further Education College for Apprenticeship Training in the UK, and Best Learning Experience. It’s All Good from Estyn NPTC Group of Colleges is really good at what it does, and that’s official according to Estyn, Her Majesty’s Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales. It’s the first inspection since merger and Chief Executive and Principal Mark Dacey said ‘to achieve the rating was a true testament to the hard work, dedication and talent of staff and students.’ The report identified that ‘the College leadership team is well established and cohesive and that ‘there is a clear and ambitious direction to the work of the College.’ The report said leaders work skilfully to identify and take advantage of opportunities to integrate the College’s work with community activities and to support local facilities.

Superb engagement with employers across its geographical area that helps shape the College’s provision to meet local need.

Learners develop behaviours that support their career aspirations and feel that the College prepares them well for progression to higher level learning and for employment.

The College’s targeted employer forums bring together relevant stakeholders to tackle key economic and social development needs.

Students are also involved in various activities ‘making a valuable contribution to community-focussed activities’ such as fundraising for mental-health charities and helping out at local schools with various projects.

In vocational programmes, learners develop and apply sound practical and vocational competencies and develop higher level vocational skills and enhance their personal confidence through participation in skills competitions.

Conor Drain also studied Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science at Brecon College and was pleased to attain Triple Distinction Stars (D*D*D*). Elis Tudor studied Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma Sport and achieved a Triple Distinction Star (D*D*D*) and a B in the Welsh Baccalaureate. Elis has received a scholarship as a result of her grades and is going to Aberystwyth University to do Primary Education leading to QTS.

Layla Jones (Newtown College) achieved a fantastic Distinction in the Extended Diploma in Performing Arts. During her time on the course Layla was a dedicated and focused student who went from strength to strength. She had a passion for musical theatre and was a strong triple threat performer. Layla was about to undertake the lead role in our full-scale musical theatre production before we went into lockdown, and although the production being cancelled was extremely disappointing, Layla continued to work hard and showed the same level of commitment towards the online learning as she did in college. Layla’s work was always of a high standard, and she put as much care into her written work as she did her practical. Out of college Layla also got involved in numerous local groups, she worked with the children’s theatre group at The Hafren, Rising Stars, and choreographed for them. She helps out with other groups as a vocal coach and also performs locally. Layla is hoping to gain a place in drama school in order to pursue a career in musical theatre.

Teleri Ottaway studied Level 3 BTEC Diploma Health and Social Care and achieved a Triple Distinction Star D*D*D* and a B in Welsh Baccalaureate. Teleri said:

"I’m very proud of my results, and would like to thank the staff at Newtown College for all their help and guidance. The course has taught me so much and I feel like it has opened doors for me and allowed me to realise where I want to go in the future. I would really recommend this course to anyone thinking of taking it as it creates so many opportunities and I personally have learnt so much from it. My next chapter is to begin a degree in Primary School Teaching at the University of Chester". Ethan Smith completed the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business with WBQ. Ethan achieved Double Distinction, Merit and an A grade in the Welsh Baccalaureate. Ethan has prospered in his home studying and has decided to complete a BA Honours in Business Management (Accounting) at Open University, whilst completing AAT Level 2&3. Throughout the pandemic Ethan has been working towards getting a certificate from the CFA (Charted Financial Authority) through an online course which he says has further developed his understanding of the financial sector, plus continuing to work part-time at an accountancy firm to gain experience.

Steph Andrews received a Triple Distinction Star grade (D*D*D*) in BTEC Level 3 Public Services. He is going to Cardiff University studying a degree in Law and Criminology.

Billy Morgan Sion Jones received Triple Distinction Stars (D*D*D*) in the BTEC Level 3 Public Services. He is hoping to start a Police Apprenticeship Degree in January or considering joining Cardiff University to study Criminology next September. Ellie Bray also studied Level 3 BTEC Diploma Health and Social Care and attained a Triple Distinction Star (D*D*D*) and a B in Welsh Baccalaureate. Ellie said:

"I’m super pleased with my grades! I’m now going to Staffordshire university, but the Shrewsbury campus, to study Child Nursing! Couldn’t have done it without the amazing tutors!!" Owen Brunt also studied Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma Sport and accomplished a Triple Distinction Stars (D*D*D*). Owen said:

"I worked really hard for the grades I came out with and am pleased of my placed to Cardiff Met to do Sports Performance Analysis". Will Bengall studied BTEC Level 3 Public Services. He achieved a Distinction, Distinction Merit grade and will progress to Glyndwr University to take Professional Policing linked to North Wales Police. Billy Morgan also studied BTEC Level 3 Public Services and attained a Triple Pass grade. Billy joined the British Army in June 2020.

Congratulations to Newtown College’s Elin Orrells who was announced Lantra Wales College Young Learner of the Year U26 at a glittering ceremony in the Metropole Hotel. In addition to this Elin received the School of Catering, Hospitality and Agriculture departmental vocational bursary. Elin attended the prestigious awards ceremony with members of her family and teaching staff from the college agriculture department. Elin said: "I am very proud to have been nominated for this award and it

is thanks to all the help I have received from the tutors when studying for my L3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture.

"The lecturers at the College have inspired me to take every opportunity available to develop my farming knowledge and encouraged me to participate in a number of competitions."

The CWTCH

The CWTCH – College Within The Community Hub Brecon Beacons College’s newest addition, the College Within the Community Hub – ‘The CWTCH’, has officially opened its doors. The former tourist information centre will create a vision for further education in Brecon and will be part of the community with open access for all. Member of the Senedd for Brecon and Radnorshire and Minister for Education, Kirsty Williams unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion. Ms Williams said: “It’s given this building re-purpose and will broaden college activity by being so accessible and

central. It will be a hub and bring people together. I find this building and what’s going on inspirational.” The CWTCH has been refurbished and includes flexible working areas, video conferencing facilities, interactive touch screens, and ultra-fast 1GB internet access, along with state of the art computing facilities for both student and public use. As well as the delivery of courses for college students, the community will be welcome to use the IT facilities as well as sign up for some of the new part-time courses that will be offered from the building which it leases from the local authority. Also available will be tips on job hunting, setting up your own business, interview techniques, and CV writing.

Award-winning College makes the Top Ten Training Providers in the UK It’s official, NPTC Group of Colleges has been voted yet again as the Best Training Provider in Wales and in the top ten of the entire UK at the recent School Leavers Awards 2020.

Mark Dacey, Principal and CEO of NPTC Group Of Colleges was thrilled to hear the news the College had taken the top spot in Wales for the second year in a row and said:

The awards, which took a slightly different approach due to the current pandemic, were held virtually and introduced by singer, television presenter, narrator and model Rylan Clark-Neal presented by Paul Harris and Jack Denton, the co-founders of All About School Leavers.

Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate

The Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate at Advanced Level will enable Level 3 students to consolidate and progress their essential skills, essential employability skills, and promote and develop high level research skills. Building on achievements at Level 2, the qualification will help to develop more complex skills, attributes and behaviours. It will provide experiences which will equip you for university, further training or employment. "The Skills Challenge Certificate (Welsh Baccalaureate) is unusual as a qualification whose content is in large part led by students themselves. We enormously value the self-motivation, curiosity and independent-mindedness this approach to learning develops. It is these characteristics, along with three excellent A Levels, that we look for at competitive universities like Oxford." What types of apprenticeships are there? b There are three types of apprenticeships you can apply for depending on current skills and qualifications: b Foundation apprenticeship - Level 2 b Apprenticeship - Level 3 b Higher apprenticeship - Level 4+.

Apprenticeships

You will be on placement with an employer and possibly attend College for one day a week. You will be assessed in the workplace and helped to gather evidence for your portfolio. An apprenticeship is a work-based learning programme where you can earn a wage while you learn. If you live in Wales and are over 16 and not in full-time education, you can apply for an apprenticeship.

Degree Apprenticeships

NPTC Group of Colleges and Wrexham Glyndŵr University (WGU) have recently been awarded funding under the new Degree Apprenticeship Pilot Programme for Wales. Reflecting the skills needs of Wales, universities and other degree awarding institutions were asked to design a new suite of digital programmes to enable Welsh organisations to upskill their existing employees or recruit new talent in areas such as software engineering, cyber security and data science for the new digital degree apprenticeships framework.

Why become an apprentice?

New Apprenticeship Academy to Shape the Future of Healthcare in Powys Powys Teaching Health Board (PTHB) and NPTC Group of Colleges gave a warm welcome to the first Healthcare Support Worker apprentices as they start on their new careers within the NHS. They are part of a group of young workers who have just joined the Health Board during its initial successful wave of apprentice recruitment. The aim of the health board’s apprenticeship academy, in partnership with the Colleges’ Work-Based Learning team Pathways Training, is to recruit staff and provide them with the skills, knowledge and experience for the start of their journey to become a nurse. A series of successful roadshows were held across all PTHB hospitals last October, introducing existing staff to a number of accredited work-based learning programmes. Staff are able to take advantage of accessing a range of learning opportunities across a number of sectors. One staff member studying for a Business Administration qualification said: “I have been an employee for the Health Board for 12 years and they have supported me with my career development. I am thoroughly enjoying undertaking the Level 3 Business Admin course via NPTC. The assessor has been helpful and encouraging and allows me to work at a pace that is suitable for me. What will I do?

Our courses are extremely hands on, and also allow you to gain valuable work in the landbased sector. At College you will cover areas such as livestock production, crop production, estate maintenance, and tractor and machinery maintenance and operations. These subjects will be delivered by our lecturers who possess extensive industry knowledge of modern production systems as well as cutting-edge IT technologies including drones and GPS systems. Many of our students progress to higher education either at the College studying the HND in Agriculture course, or other institutions to study other agriculture-related degrees.

On completing an agriculture course, students can choose from a wide range of practical career paths within the UK agricultural sector, including farm manager, livestock manager, nutritionist, agronomist, farm consultant, farm inspector, and auctioneer.

LANTRA WALES COLLEGE YOUNG LEARNER OF THE YEAR U26 Congratulations to Newtown College’s Elin Orrells who was announced Lantra Wales College Young Learner of the Year U26 at a glittering ceremony in the Metropole Hotel. In addition to this Elin received the School of Catering, Hospitality and Agriculture departmental vocational bursary. Elin attended the prestigious awards ceremony with members of her family and teaching staff from the college agriculture department. Elin said: "I am very proud to have been nominated for this award and it is thanks to all the help I have received from the tutors when studying for my L3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture.

"The lecturers at the College have inspired me to take every opportunity available to develop my farming knowledge and encouraged me to participate in a number of competitions." Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust Art students at Newtown College have unveiled a new spider sculpture to be displayed in the town, as part of a Wildlife Trust project.

Students worked closely with Spike to create the spider, participating in a practical blacksmithing workshop at Spike’s studio as they widened their knowledge of crafts and techniques to bring nature alive.

In association with Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust, students helped design the eight-legged sculpture with Brandon Cadwallader, following their winning submission for the Trust’s ‘Art Oasis’ project.

Funded by the National Assembly for Wales and EU backed initiative “Arwain,” the project aims to bring people and wildlife together through the arts and has delivered creative art-based activities and outreach projects with a number of organisations in the past two years.

Local artist and blacksmith Spike Blackhurst then took the chosen design forward to completion and installation of the spider, which will now be based at Oriel Davies in Newtown’s Town Hall Gardens.

Partners and businesses involved gathered with students and the Trust for the launch at the end of April, as the impressive design was brought to life!

The motor vehicle departments at Newtown and Brecon Beacons also have fully equipped workshops with four post, two post and scissor-style vehicle lifts, diagnostic testing equipment from Bosch, Crypton, Pico, Autel and ASNU ultrasonic injector cleaning facilities. What will I do?

Career opportunities

Employment for mechanics is usually with garages, transport companies, road haulage companies or large organisations with fleets of vehicles. Level 3 Motor Vehicle students at Newtown College got a rare opportunity to learn more about future electric battery operated technologies when they got to view an electric conversion of a classic Fiat 500 thanks to Electric Classic Cars of Mid Wales. The Fiat 500 has all the character of a classic with a modern twist. The motor is mounted at the back (giving more luggage space at the front), and includes three battery packs with a hidden charge point under the Fiat badge. The students took a keen interest in the set up, with the speed and power advantages of electric quickly realised. As a classic enthusiast, Tom Watkins, technician at the College, took particular interest. Dan Pritchard, Motor Vehicle lecturer, said that training in hybrids and electrics was "an area the College was currently looking into. This new vehicle technology is going to play an important role in the future of the industry and itâ€™s great to see examples of classics like the Fiat converted, and to know that this and others are available to view on our doorstep." Electric Classic Cars is based in mid Wales and has produced a number of classic conversions which include a 911 Porsche, a 1972 Range Rover and a BMW E9. The business owned by Richard Morgan has quickly grown and Richard said how important it was that students now learn about electric vehicles to support both current builds and conversions. "There will be a greater demand in the forthcoming years for this knowledge and it's surprising how many misconceptions already exist about battery powered cars."

A Beauty Therapy student from Newtown College proved gold was definitely her colour by taking the top spot in the Beauty Therapy category at the recent Skills Competition Wales. Lucy Lewis, 18, from the village of St. Harmon, near Rhayader is a full-time student on the Level 2 Beauty Therapy course at Newtown College. Lucy won Gold at the competition by carrying out an eyelash tint, a full face of day makeup, apply a crème red polish to all 10 nails, all in 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Juggling a full-time course with a part-time job, Lucy plans on staying in college to complete the Level 3 Beauty Therapy qualification. She explains: “Once I finish the Level 3 qualification, I intend to going to university to study Business and Marketing which will aid me in starting and running my own business.’’

“Everyone on my course is very friendly and inclusive, which makes me excited to come to college every day. The course tutors treat the learners as equals, which makes it easy for me to learn and there are endless opportunities for learners to excel in their chosen course. Congratulations to our Level 3 Business students at Newtown College, who have won the Positive Pathways Powys Business Ideas Competition. The group of Business students were among 50 entrants who submitted a new business idea to answer the question, ‘What business would you set up in Powys and why?’. The competition required entrants to consider a business proposal which included detailing the target customers, the type of promotions to undertake, staffing and the issues which may need to be overcome. From the contestants, three groups were shortlisted and invited to present to a panel of judges at Powys County Council’s headquarters in Llandrindod Wells. A total of nine judges, which included County Councillors and local business managers, then challenged the groups with questions on their business concepts.

“I have had numerous opportunities whilst studying at Newtown College, it is not possible to just state one. In the first semester of my opening year at college I was accepted to attend a marketplace in France as part of a collaboration between college and the Newtown Twinning Association where I sold Welsh goods to French consumers. Within the second semester of first year, alongside three other students, I won the Positive Pathways Powys Business competition which had over 50 submissions, and this particular experience helped me improve numerous skills such as my team-work, planning and presenting, all required for employment.” “I am hoping to attend university in Manchester to study ‘Business & Finance’. Student Success Sam Cottrell – Mechanical Engineering Student Sam Cottrell has been crowned the ‘Best in Wales’ against 40+ Students/Competitors from the 12 Welsh FE Colleges and other learning providers as part of Skills Competition Wales. Sam has now secured a place within the Welsh Squad and will now compete against other United Kingdom medal winners head to head for #1 position to represent the UK against the rest of the world. Curtis Rees Welding Apprentice - Afon Engineering Curtis Rees, a welding apprentice from Neath College, was among the nation’s top skilled young people who were recognised at the WorldSkills National Final last year (2019).

Curtis from Resolven is the first student from NPTC Group of Colleges to win a highly coveted gold medal as he triumphed in his discipline at the NEC in Birmingham. The prestigious competition saw more than 500 apprentices and students compete in over 70 disciplines to be crowned the best in the UK in a vocational pathway. Curtis achieved an overall score of 92.25% out of 100 to claim his gold medal, the first for NPTC Group of Colleges in any national competition. Work-Based Learning Manager at Pathways Training, Alec Thomas, was delighted with Curtis’s achievement and said: “Curtis’s enthusiasm for welding and for WorldSkills UK is infectious and he is already encouraging new apprentices to be involved. This can only be good for the industry and local businesses, and will help to support the development of new opportunities for young people in the area.” Curtis has big plans for the future, he has big aspirations to run his own business within the field of structural welding, where he has spotted a gap in the market.

The courses offered are full or part-time and the staff delivering have a wide range of vocational expertise as well as extensive experience in working with learners with additional learning needs. Each course includes a structured timetable, study support, chill out/quiet rooms, enrichment activities and an introduction to College life and Further Education. Students develop communication, literacy, numeracy and digital literacy skills and from this comes improved confidence and strengthened personal, social and emotional skills required for learning and life. You do not need any formal qualifications; just a desire to participate in the learning activities we offer. It is possible to try lots of different subjects depending on your individual interests. This helps you to find out what you enjoy, what you are good at and help you with your future choices. You can work at your own level and speed, but extra help is available as part of the course and, through learning support and tutorials, we are able to cater for a wide range of needs. Our staff are qualified, experienced teachers with specialist skills to deliver the courses offered in a supportive and caring environment.

We hold employability and progression events with employers and support agencies. The school runs a number of enterprise and volunteering activities and encourages students to participate in a variety of competitions at both regional and national levels including Skills Competition Wales, ILS sports tournaments and in the last couple of years, Channel 4â€™s Shed of the Year. Our students create pop-up shops and mobile enterprises and we ensure that students make links with supported employment organisations. Health and Social Care Student Ffion Jones has won the Vocational Category at the prestigious British Education Awards (BEA). She became the first student from NPTC Group of Colleges to win the awards. The BEA identifies and celebrates individuals who have excelled within the British education system. In doing so, these awards acknowledge that success comes down to personal endeavour and application.

Ffion won the award in recognition of her brilliant academic results and extracurricular success. She combined studying with two part-time jobs as well as being a Dementia Friends Champion, raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Society, and a Police Cadet Leader with Dyfed Powys Police. During her time as a cadet at Newtown’s St. John’s Centre, she has carried out work placements at Bethshan Nursing Home and Newtown Hospital. The hospitality and culinary arts industry is one of the largest industries in the UK, with a wealth of job opportunities available at home and abroad. Student Success

Newtown College student Alice Yeoman secured a place at the prestigious national finals of the WorldSkills UK competitions held in Birmingham. The competition enhanced Alice's career path, she initially spent four months working in the busy kitchens of the 5-star Savoy Hotel in the Stand, London, before she was given an amazing opportunity. Alice gained a position as Commis Chef at the prestigious 2 Michelin-starred Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons in Oxfordshire, working for renowned chef Raymond Blanc. Alice has also recently competed as part of the Welsh Junior Culinary team at the Culinary Olympics in Germany and won a silver medal.

Alice describes her three years at Newtown College as 'invaluable to her success'. Alice put in a lot of time outside of college work and her job at The Wynnstay Hotel in Machynlleth to plan and practise for the event. Alice described the event, saying: "It’s been such an amazing experience. Sadly I didn’t come away with a medal this time but I have come away with more confidence in myself and in my skills than I’ve ever had before and along the way I’ve made some fantastic memories."

Public Services The Uniformed Public Services Sector is made up of many professions that protect and serve the population around the world. From rescuing climbers as part of the Mountain Rescue team, being deployed in the army as a medic or attending a crash site as a paramedic, police officer or fireman on the motorway, the professions are highly trained and ready for active service in many types of emergencies. Many of the public services lecturers have been in active duty across the uniformed public services, using their expert knowledge and experience to engage students and make them aware of available opportunities. The department runs educational visits across the country to highlight the breadth of possible careers available in the uniformed public services, providing students with our ethos of ‘more than just an education’.

What will I do?

Joining Forces with Police & Crime Commissioner Newtown College recently welcomed the Police and Crime Commissioner for Dyfed-Powys, Dafydd Llywelyn. The Crime Commissioner joined colleagues from the Road Policing Unit and provided a question and answer session with the Sports and Public Services students. He then visited students from the Gateway to Further Education department and saw the work that they had recently been doing in conjunction with local Police Constable Jennings. They created a thought-provoking display to campaign against hate crimes. The group also worked with colleagues in the Collegeâ€™s media department to create

a short film to raise awareness of issues relating to hate crime. The Commissioner spoke highly of their good work, reinforcing the messages and the value of the campaign. The Commissioner then visited The Hafren Theatre which is based in Newtown College. He saw first-hand the use of the facilities which were occupied that day by the Welsh Blood Service, highlighting the versatile role the theatre space plays. Sara Clutton, Theatre Manager, also took the Commissioner on a tour of the venue showing him the stage area and a trip not for the faint-hearted to the top of the fly tower.

Brecon Beacons College

The Sports Academy at Brecon Beacons College uses the facilities of Brecon Leisure Centre which include an athletics track, astroturf pitch, sports hall, tennis and netball courts and a swimming pool. On site, the Sports Academy has its own training pitch and strength and conditioning centre, which has benefitted the development of many athletes, over the years, like Dan Lydiate. The surrounding countryside of the Brecon Beacons also boasts many outdoor adventure activities such as mountain walking, canoeing and mountain biking; all students can collectively engage in various activities either as part of their course, through the enrichment programme or the newly established Duke of Edinburgh Award qualification.

Lecturers are community coaches offering hockey and gymnastics, with Rhian Davies playing hockey for Welsh Masters. Some modules of the Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development and WBQ can be taught through the medium of the Welsh language and students will be able to complete their assessments bilingually were possible.

Newtown College

The Newtown College Football Academy train and play home matches at the new 3G pitch at Latham Park. We also use the facilities at Maldwyn Leisure Centre which include the sports hall, astroturf pitch, fitness studio and fitness suite. b b

Dan Lydiate Ospreys, Wales,

British & Irish Lions Sports Alumni Dan Lydiate is a former Coleg Powys BTEC Level 3 Sport & Exercise Science student. A local farmer’s son from Abbey Cwm Hir, Llandrindod Wells, he went on to study a Foundation Degree in Strength & Conditioning at Brecon Beacons College. A talented flanker, he then moved onto a professional rugby career signing up for the Newport Dragons where, in his first year, he was capped with Wales Under 20s. Dan was named in the Wales National squad for the November 2009 international series, making his debut as a second-half replacement against Argentina on 21 November 2009. He made his first test match start as flanker on 28 November 2009 after which he was named in the Wales squad for the 2010 Six Nations Championship.

He then broke into the Welsh first XV in the autumn internationals of that year, starting against Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, the match where he won the Man of the Match award wearing the Number 7 jersey for the first time in addition to being named in the team to face South Africa. He played every match of Wales’ 2011 Six Nations Championship campaign as well as all four warm-up matches. In August 2011, he was named in the Wales squad for the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, he also later made up the squad of the 2015 World Cup in England. He played in Wales’ opening two games against South Africa and Samoa, as well as playing a key role in Wales’ quarter-final win over Ireland. He finished narrowly ahead of Wales and Dragons teammate Toby Faletau to take the tournament’s top tacklers title. 51

In the 2012 Six Nations Championship, he received the Player of the Tournament award after featuring in every game bar the opener against Ireland and receiving Man of the Match awards. It was in this very year that he was also nominated for the Welsh Sports Personality of the Year award. In April 2013, he was named in the squad for the 2013 British and Irish Lions tour to Australia. He left Newport Gwent Dragons at the end of the 2012/13 season to join the club Racing Métro 92 before becoming an Osprey in 2014, whose training ground is, in fact, the Colleges’ Llandarcy Academy of Sport, He had been under the wing of former Sports Lecturer Chay Billen since the age of 14 when he worked with him as an under 14 Powys player. He still regularly uses the excellent training facilities at the Brecon Beacons College whenever his training schedule allows. Talking about his time at the College, Dan said:

“Without the college’s strength and conditioning programme I would not have been able to achieve these levels, it was the difference, and is as good as any system in professional rugby.’’
