Instant comfort—anywhere

Cosm Chair by Herman Miller

™

Designed by Studio 7.5

Sit in Cosm, and you just might forget you’re sitting in a chair at all. Its sophisticated ergonomic design sets a new bar for instant, personalized comfort, no matter who sat in the chair before you, how long you’ll be in it, or what you’ll be doing. The designers at Berlin-based Studio 7.5 knew, even when working on predecessors like Mirra, Setu, and Mirra 2, that the ideal chair would provide a smooth feeling of natural balance.

Cosm’s revolutionary Auto-Harmonic Tilt does just that— putting the person first and responding to them, no matter their posture—for total support. Available in three different back heights, as well as a stool, Cosm gives you a new experience of comfort—anywhere you work.

Performance A tilt is to a chair what a transmission is to a car, and like transmissions, some are manual, and others, such as Cosm’s, are automatic. With other self-adjusting models, the chair forces the body to conform to the tilt’s movement. Cosm’s Auto-Harmonic Tilt puts the person first and responds to them—no matter their posture—providing a balanced recline and personalized comfort. Studio 7.5 and Herman Miller perfected the self-adjusting tilt by inventing and engineering a complex, finely tuned mechanism. Accounting for the sitter’s vertical force, the gears within the tilt move the fulcrum along a leaf spring to automatically adjust the tilt’s tension.

The continuous contour of the chair’s Intercept Suspension envelops each person’s individual form, delivering dynamic, uninterrupted support. It clips into the thin but strong frame, which feels nearly non-existent and offers support while flexing so you can comfortably move your upper body.

“You should have a chair that allows you to change postures as easily as possible,” the designers say. “You can only do that with a chair that is correctly adjusted, so we wanted to build a chair that does that part for you.”

Cosm’s innovative new Leaf Arms—the first of their kind—feature a soft but firm cradle design that provides a large, cozy resting place for your elbows. The arm rests make holding a phone or book natural and comfortable, and the angle of the arms mean they don’t get in the way of a work surface when it’s time to get back online.

Design The German word for design is entwerfen, which roughly translates as “to throw.” According to the designers, that’s “throw something a little bit ahead of the curve, or ahead of what you know, to help pull you in the right direction.” With Cosm, “throwing” led Studio 7.5 to their most sophisticated design yet. About Studio 7.5 When Burkhard Schmitz and Carola Zwick started their design studio as a team of six in 1992, they were looking for the freedom to work on projects that interested them. And for the freedom from bosses and titles. “Everybody does everything,” says Schmitz, speaking for the group that now includes Carola’s brother, Roland Zwick. “That’s how we cultivate ideas and maintain our openness and curiosity.” They find designing office chairs to be most rewarding and have worked with Herman Miller on the Setu Chair, the award-winning Mirra chair, Mirra 2, and Cosm. “We define not only how the chair looks but how it performs,” Carola says. As to how Setu, Mirra, and Cosm all perform for you, they provide comfort no matter how or where you sit. Studio 7.5

Materials Cosm is available in one hue from top to bottom to further cement the unity of the design and the sculptural quality of the chair. Or, mix and match any of the six colors on the suspension and frame.

The evolution of an ergonomic revolution

Aeron

Designed by Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick, 1994 Remastered by Don Chadwick, 2016 When designers Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick set out to create a chair that was health-positive, cross-performing, inclusively sized, and environmentally sensitive, they arrived at a design unlike the world had ever seen. Aeron demonstrated a pioneering step in ergonomics and material innovation, and provided a comfortable solution without the standard use of foam, fabric, or leather. It changed people’s perception of what an office chair could be— and in doing so it soon found a place in popular culture.

Fast forward to the present, and the same criteria serve as the foundation for a whole new Aeron. While its iconic form has remained largely unchanged, the Aeron Chair has been remastered from the casters up to meet the needs of today’s work and workers. With the help of original co-designer, Don Chadwick, we thoughtfully updated the chair based on the latest research around the science of sitting, and advancements in materials, manufacturing, and technology.

Performance At Herman Miller, we have learned a great deal about how best to support people in the varied postures they adopt throughout the workday. With the new Aeron Chair, we incorporated two decades’ worth of technological and ergonomic enhancements to improve the health-positive design, and widen the range of cross-performance capabilities. With updates that include a more refined tilt mechanism, adjustable PostureFit SL , and 8Z Pellicle suspension, the new Aeron performs better than ever before— so you can too. ™

®

Zonal Support New 8Z Pellicle offers unprecedented comfort through eight varied zones of tension in the seat and back. To better envelope the sitter, the tightest zones keep the body off the frame and in the chair, while more compliant zones conform to the sitting bones and distribute weight evenly.

PostureFit SL

Aeration

Adjustable, individual pads support the sacrum and lumbar region of the spine to mimic

The 8Z Pellicle suspension material allows air, body heat, and water vapor to pass

through the seat and back to help maintain even and comfortable skin temperature.

Natural Movement An updated tilt mechanism delivers a smoother trajectory and optimal balance point to keep people in control of their movement throughout the entire range of recline.

Design Just as iconic films and albums are updated for new mediums, standards, and audiences, Aeron has been remastered to meet the needs of today’s work, workers, and work environments. By coupling co-designer Don Chadwick’s vision with Herman Miller’s latest research around the science of sitting, the new Aeron works smarter than ever before. About Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick Between Bill Stumpf’s flair for function and Don Chadwick’s eye for elegance, the two possessed all of the right components to create revolutionary, identifiable performance chairs. They started with the Equa Chair designed for Herman Miller in the 1980s. In the 1990s, Stumpf’s deep understanding of ergonomics, Chadwick’s rich feel for aesthetics, and Herman Miller’s rigorous research and engineering power delivered the Aeron Chair— a seat that became synonymous with comfort and recognized for its dematerialized design. Using his and Stumpf’s initial criteria for the Aeron Chair, Chadwick is the sole designer to work with Herman Miller on the new Aeron. ®

Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick

Materials Through hundreds of samples, tests, and iterations, we arrived at three tightly curated, holistic material expressions. Graphite is the darkest, a modern rendition of the original Aeron. Carbon offers a balanced neutral that works equally well in warm and cool environments. Mineral is the lightest, ideal for today’s more open office environments. Created through a unique painting process, Aeron’s satin aluminum finish offers a luster redolent of high-end electronic equipment. Colors were developed to harmonize with the chair’s other components. Details such as these contribute to a product worthy of the Aeron name, but they are not enough. Each detail contributes to a seamless whole.

z Embody

®

Y

So intelligent, sitting in it actually helps you think

Embody

Designed by Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber Embody began with the recognition of a previously unsolved problem: the lack of physical harmony between people and their technology. Spending too much time sitting in front of our laptops or staring at our tablets, moving nothing but our fingers, can make us stiff and tired because our bodies are made to move. With Embody, designers Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber set out to solve this problem.

More than 30 physicians and PhDs in the fields of biomechanics, vision, physical therapy, and ergonomics contributed their expertise to help guide the development of this chair. As a result, Embody has set a new benchmark for pressure distribution, natural alignment, and support for healthy movement in ergonomic seating.

Performance You feel Embody’s Pixelated Support the moment you sit down—a sense that you are floating, yet perfectly balanced. Thanks to a dynamic matrix of pixels, Embody’s seat and back surfaces automatically conform to your body’s micro-movements, distributing your weight evenly as you sit. This reduces pressure and encourages movement, both of which are key to maintaining healthy circulation and focus. ™

Embody’s back is designed like yours, with a central spine and flexible ribs. The Backfit adjustment allows you to position the backrest in line with your spine’s natural curve, so you achieve a neutral, balanced posture. Once the chair is tuned to fit you, the backrest adapts to your movement, adjusting automatically to your shifting positions. Whether you lean forward or recline, support remains constant. ™

A combination of support layers in Embody’s seat work together to reduce seated pressure. These layers were designed to allow for airflow, keeping you cool and comfortable as you sit.

The Backfit adjustment lets the chair’s back embrace your spine’s unique curves,

Embody’s tilt technology keeps your back at a proper angle to the seat, allowing your body

holding your head in alignment with your technology.

to move naturally into the most healthful seated postures while keeping your pelvis stable.

Embody’s narrow backrest lets your arms and shoulders move unimpeded. This movement helps open your lungs and encourages deeper breathing and more focused thinking.

Design Form doesn’t just follow function with Embody. Function is on full display. Every part of the chair was designed to serve a very specific, healthful purpose. Embody’s technology isn’t hidden, but is instead part of its aesthetic. After years of research, design, building, and testing—and then doing it all over again (and again)—the art of design and the science of seating came together perfectly to create Embody.

About Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber The Embody story began in the design studio of Jeff Weber and the late Bill Stumpf, who worked with Herman Miller for 30 years on a number of products, including the Ergon chair, Ethospace system, and Equa and Aeron chairs, which he designed with Don Chadwick. Bill passed away during the development of Embody, and Jeff carried on. “Bill’s design spirit will inspire all my future work,” says Weber, whose design credits also include the Caper chair. Stumpf and Weber also teamed up on the design of the Envelop Desk for Herman Miller. ®

Lean, light, and as responsive as your own shadow

Mirra 2

Designed by Studio 7.5 As work evolves, and we become more active, shifting from individual to collaborative work in an instant, we need tools designed to be as agile as our work style. To address this need, the designers of Studio 7.5 set out to create a highperforming chair that supports people who work in a constant state of motion.

Mirra 2 moves with you, at one with your body. When you sit, the seat and back adapt to you instantly. With dynamic surfaces that respond to your slightest movements and simple, intuitive adjustments to fine-tune the fit, Mirra 2 balances immediate comfort and personalized ergonomics in one sophisticated design.

Performance Support for seated movement starts with a flexible, yet supportive design that allows your body to move freely and naturally. Mirra 2’s Loop Spine provides torsional flex, allowing you to stretch and reach laterally, while the Harmonic 2 tilt provides a smooth, balanced feel as you recline. ™

Two back options and two versions—chairs and stools—help Mirra 2 work for a variety of people and applications. The ultra-responsive Butterfly Back is a dynamic hybrid structure that acts like a suspension membrane. The TriFlex back meets more rigorous cleaning protocols because there is no fabric layer. Both back options are ventilated to keep you cool, and both offer passive PostureFit sacral support to keep your spine properly aligned as you sit. Stools extend the Mirra 2 design into any setting where seated and standing collaborators benefit from being at a common eye level. ™

™

®

Mirra 2’s Harmonic 2 tilt, with its responsive leaf-spring design, creates a smooth and balanced feel as you move from one posture to another, whatever your size or stature—from 90 to 350 pounds.

support as you move.

AireWeave™ 2 suspension seat is temperature neutral, so heat doesn’t build up as you sit.

The FlexFront® seat edge easily adjusts to properly support your thighs as you sit.

Design The lean design of Mirra 2 chairs and stools brings a sophisticated profile and visual lightness to any space. An emphasis on performance is visible. The individual components and their function are apparent and celebrated, and vary accordingly in material and appearance. As performance defines the look of Mirra 2’s components, their coloration allows significant options for defining the overall aesthetic of your chair or stool. Added selections for textiles, back loop and spine colors, and base finishes offer flexibility and encourage personalization. About Studio 7.5 Designers Claudia Plikat, Burkhard Schmitz, Carola Zwick, and engineer Roland Zwick founded Berlin, Germany-based industrial design firm Studio 7.5 in 1992. Their designs for Herman Miller, including Setu Chairs, Mirra and Mirra 2 Chairs, and Metaform Portfolio , reflect a desire to give people more control over their work environments and tools. ®

Fewer parts, less material, and still everything a good chair should be

Sayl

Designed by Yves Béhar Good design, healthy support, and exceptional value are always attractive—and Sayl delivers all three. By using smart engineering to transform simple materials, we were able to make Sayl attainable for more people. Fewer parts and less material also mean a smaller environmental impact.

Sayl designer Yves Béhar and our development team considered and reconsidered every part of the design— and, in the end, created a full family of seating that sets the reference point in its class for quality, performance, and design.

Performance Sayl’s unframed 3D Intelligent back lets you stretch and move, striking a healthy balance between support and freedom. The elastomer strands vary in thickness and tension to provide greater support in the transition areas along the spine and less everywhere else, to encourage a full range of seated movement. ®

The foundational shell of the upholstered work chair mimics the 3D Intelligent suspension, providing similar dynamic support in a more traditional back. An optional lumbar support is available on both work chair models and provides adjustment over a four-inch range.

The construction of Sayl’s 3D Intelligent suspension back provide integrated PostureFit ® sacral support, which empowers your body to maintain a healthful upright posture with less fatigue.

The frameless 3D Intelligent suspension back allows freedom of movement while

The back of the upholstered work chair and stool, shown here with adjustable lumbar support,

is engineered to mimic the dynamic support of 3D Intelligent suspension.

The stretch knit back cover offers an expressive palette that will complement any environment.

Design Inspired by suspension bridges—structures that deliver the most using the least material—Yves Béhar applied the engineering principles of these amazing structures to create Sayl. The Eco-Dematerialized design of the work chair and stool uses less material in more inventive ways to provide ergonomic support for people up to 350 pounds (159 kg). ™

Sayl’s unframed back and Y-Tower support create a striking visual aesthetic that reveals both the designer’s inspiration and intent. The stretch knit back cover provides a softer, warmer aesthetic while maintaining the beauty, support, and breathability of Sayl’s signature 3-D suspension back. A fully upholstered version is also available. Both offer an expressive palette that will complement any environment. ®

About Yves Béhar

A graduate of the Art Center College of Design, Yves Béhar started out working with high-tech Silicon Valley clients, eventually gravitating to the sport, apparel, technology, and furniture arenas. His admiration of Charles and Ray Eames first attracted him to Herman Miller. “Design is very much at the center of Herman Miller’s culture,” he says. “So one day I just picked up the phone, called them, and said, ‘Let’s work together.’” His collaborations with Herman Miller include Sayl chairs and Public Office Landscape . ™

Instant comfort for anyone, anywhere

Setu

Designed by Studio 7.5 The function and contours of Setu were shaped by the world around us. The designers of Studio 7.5 observed the ways technology has changed how we work, where we work, and how we move throughout the day. We’re working more collaboratively, in a variety of settings—but spending less time in each spot. We expect to be able to work anywhere and everywhere, and we need furniture that can do the same.

While technology has changed much about the nature of work, it hasn’t changed how we all like to work: in comfort. The Setu family includes multipurpose chairs, stools, lounge chairs, and ottomans, designed to deliver instant comfort from the moment you sit down. A complementary suite of tables supports collaboration in three distinct working postures.

Performance Material innovation gives Setu Chairs their unique combination of flex and strength. The Kinematic Spine uses two types of polypropylene to control resistance as you recline and to support your weight, without a tilt mechanism. It bends and flexes with every movement, responding to the natural ways your body moves. ™

More structural element than textile, the finely tuned Lyris 2 elastomeric material creates Setu’s one-piece seat and back. Lyris 2 works with Setu’s Kinematic Spine to distribute your weight evenly and conform to your contours. The open weave also aerates your body to keep you comfortable. On upholstered Setu Chairs, the C-Layer suspension works with a variety of textiles, adding a degree of structural support to the fabric. ™

Setu Tables are available in four heights, three diameters, and a variety of surface materials to support all the ways you like to work: sitting, lounging, or standing.

Design Setu is Studio 7.5’s solution for today’s more collaborative, less formal workspaces. From the graceful curve of its ribbon arms to the durable, uncoated H-Alloy base, every part of the Setu Chair was painstakingly shaped and reshaped to ensure that each molecule falls into the right place to deliver the desired functionality. The result is an environmentally sensitive design that uses less material—only 17 pounds for the multipurpose chair—to support people of all sizes, up to 300 pounds (136 kg). A range of upholstery and material options means you can outfit Setu to serve as a focal point or to blend into any space where you work or live. ™

The colourful, casual way to pull up a chair

Caper

Designed by Jeff Weber The perfectly portable chair, Caper is designed to be moved. Pull up a couple of Capers for collaborative work. Push a cluster of Capers together and transform a classroom. Take a whole Caper Cart of stacking chairs from the conference room to the cafeteria. Lightweight, durable, and easy to deploy, Caper is ideal for informal, flexible spaces where rearranging is encouraged.

The Caper chair, in all its variations-multipurpose chairs and stools, chairs and stools that stack, as well as Caper stacking chair with tablet arm-were designed to create comfortable, mobile seating that’s also affordable. “Too much good design seems expensive,” designer Jeff Weber says, “I wanted to break that cliché.”

Performance Caper’s glass-filled nylon seat and back are contoured for comfort, flexible for give, and colourful enough to brighten up any room. Holes in the material allow your body to breathe, dissipating moisture and heat so you remain cool. An optional FLEXNET™ seat uses advanced suspension materials to minimize pressure points, which keeps you comfortable longer. Caper Multipurpose chairs and stools feature swivel, tilt, and seat-height adjustment to support a broad range of activities. Caper stacking chairs can be stacked up to six-high on the floor or 15-high on the Caper Cart. With optional ganging connectors, they make a tidy presentation space. The stacking chair with tablet arm also stacks up to three-high on the floor; the stacking stool stacks five-high on the floor, thanks to its clever leg and footring design. An optional storage basket adds a convenient place to keep personal items off the floor and safely out of walkways. The basket’s shape and wire mesh design prevent items from falling or sliding back.

The Caper Stacking Chair with Tablet Arm features a generous work surface to accommodate today’s technology, a fully encased pivot mechanism to eliminate pinch points, and a built-in dampener to prevent slamming when lowered.

All stacking versions – with or without arms, with casters or glides – can be stacked for space-efficient storage when not in use.

Design Jeff Weber designed the Caper family of seating to accommodate a diversity of people, and, just as important, the variety of tasks they do. As stylish as they are versatile, Caper chairs and stools are available in a palette of fresh, lively color choices. Sophisticated neutrals complement, while vibrant primary colors bring energy, adding practical function and a pop of color to any space.

About Jeff Weber Jeff Weber’s interest in furniture design began when he met the legendary Bill Stumpf. Together, they formed Stumpf, Weber + Associates in 1999, eventually collaborating on the breakthrough design of the Embody® chair. Today, Jeff is principal of Studio Weber + Associates, which employs a design philosophy based on empathy for the people who use their products. Jeff believes design is “the connective tissue between people and the world.” He adds, “The quality of that design really dictates the quality of the user’s experience and thus defines our existence.”
