★ Successfully completed classes earn the student 5 credit hours per term. ★ School is on a Block Schedule (4 Blocks/Classes each day) ○ Freshman and Sophomores are required to be enrolled in 4 classes per term. ○ Juniors and Seniors are required to be enrolled in at least 3 classes per term. ○ Students dropping any class after the 1st week of the term may receive a failing grade in that class for the term. ★ Athletes and Activities (clubs) ○ To be eligible, students must have been enrolled and received 20 hours of credit in school the immediate previous semester per NSAA. ○ Students must NOT be failing two classes two consecutive weeks during the term of participation in order to participate that week. ★ Spring registration is FINAL. ○ The NPHS Master Schedule of Classes is composed, teachers are assigned, rooms are assigned, and supplies/materials are purchased based upon the number of students registered for specific classes. ○ If schedule adjustments are to be made based on changes in career goals or other legitimate reasons, those adjustments must occur before the beginning of the term in which the changes take place. In other words, term 1 changes must be completed BEFORE the beginning of term 1 and term 2 changes must be completed BEFORE the beginning of term 2. ★ Registration Registration will take place in the spring of each year. Although students will receive specific instructions during that time from high school personnel, the responsibility for appropriate graduation and career choices rests with the students and his/her parents. The counseling staff is available to assist in making decisions related to course selections. ★ Long-Term Care Students out of school 10 days or longer are responsible for taking their books with them and completing all course work. ★ Leaving Students leaving school, transferring, or dropping are responsible for properly checking out of school and returning all of their books. ★ Warning!

Explanation of Credits Earned

Students must earn 245 credits in order to be considered a completer/graduate. ● All core and elective classes earn a student 5 credits each term.

Students can also earn credits from student aiding and Bulldog time. ● Bulldog Time (homeroom): Students earn 1.25 credits each term if they earn a passing grade. Bulldog time is used in a variety of ways: to build relationships with students, to give out school wide information, study time, etc. ● Student Aides: Student aides can earn 2.5 credits each term if they earn a passing grade. To become an aide, students find a teacher or the office in the building and complete the application form. This option is only available for 11th and 12th grade students who are on track to graduate.

Honor Periods: Seniors may qualify for Honor Periods where they would not be required to be on-campus during this time. Seniors must be on track to graduate. No credit will be given for Honor Periods. An application form with parent, principal, and counselor signature is required. See counselors for more information.

Dual Credit Classes: (Dual credit = high school and college credit). Both high school and college credit may be earned concurrently. Check with your high school counselor for courses offered, ACT/Accuplacer/MAP scores needed for select classes, tuition amount, and scholarship information.

The North Platte Public School District utilizes a 0-4 scoring system to calculate grades in both the formative category and the summative category. Percentages, if used, are converted to the 0-4 point grade calculation and recorded appropriately in the gradebook. For example, if a student scores an 87% on a formative or summative assessment, a 3.5 would be recorded in Infinite Campus Gradebook. 0-4 rubric grading is also supported by this scale. This conversion is then calculated to a grade point average and letter grade.

Course Descriptions Core Classes (English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies ) The purpose of our core classes is to provide the foundation of the skills needed for college and careers after high school.

Each course is designed to build on prior skills learned to help students develop a mastery of critical and analytical thinking, problem solving, evaluation, coherent writing, collaboration, and effective communication.

English Language Arts English 9 (2 Terms-Freshman) This course fosters student growth in critical thinking of reading and writing. The focus is on improvement of analytical, creative, expository, and persuasive writing skills, broadening vocabulary, and discussing literature from a variety of viewpoints.

English 10 (2 Terms-Sophomore) This course continues student growth in critical thinking of reading and writing. Students will read a selection of short stories, poetry, nonfiction, and novels. Students will continue to improve on their analytical, expository, and persuasive writing skills with various themes and motifs from the literature. Students will also be exposed to the research paper process.

English 11 (2 Terms-Junior) This course is a general study of selected American writers and their literature. The purpose of this course is to provide students with a well-rounded understanding of perspectives in American Literature. Students enrolled in this course will read various novels, short stories, and poetry and will listen to podcasts in order to write expository essays based on the ideas and concepts of the literature. A research paper is required.

Advanced English 11 (2 Terms-Junior) Prerequisites/Requirements: English 10 with a C+ or higher or teacher approval This course is a general survey of selected American writers and their literature designed to prepare those wishing to enroll in an academic college upon graduating high school. The purpose of this course is to provide students with a well-rounded understanding of perspectives in American Literature. Students enrolled in this course will read various novels, short stories, and poetry and will listen to podcasts in order to write expository essays based on the ideas and concepts of the literature. A research paper is required.

English 12 (2 Terms-Senior) This course continues student growth in analysis of reading and writing through practical application of language and critical thinking skills. Students will read a selection of short stories, poetry, nonfiction, and novels and continue to improve on their analytical, expository, and creative writing ability through essays, poetry and a research project. .

Advanced Composition (2 Terms-Senior) Prerequisites/Requirements: Advanced English 11 with a C+ or higher or teacher approval Advanced Composition is designed to help the college-bound student make a successful transition into postsecondary education. As such, this class defines the prevalent organizational styles of expository writing used in postsecondary education. The student will write essays using a variety of developmental methods and conduct/provide documentation using the MLA/APA guidelines. *This class can be taken for Dual Credit with a qualifying ACT, ACCUPLACER, or MAP score Advanced Literature and Composition (2 Terms-Senior) Prerequisites/Requirements: Advanced English 11 with a C+ or higher or teacher approval Introduction to Literature (Advanced Literature and Composition) emphasizes the development of skills in the careful and critical understanding of multiple and diverse literacy works across the globe. The critical analysis of these works will be demonstrated through discussion, expository writing, and oral presentation. We will discuss materials relevant to the style/genre unit as an entire class, and sometimes in small discussion groups, some vital aspect of literature. This class specifies in world literature. *This class can be taken for Dual Credit with a qualifying ACT, ACCUPLACER, or MAP score AND passed Advanced Comp. for dual credit with a C or higher

Mathematics Pre-Algebra (4 Terms) Prerequisites/Requirements: Teacher recommendation This class will review basic operations of arithmetic on whole numbers, fractions and decimals. We will move into basic algebra as students master the basic concepts. The goal is for students to be prepared for Algebra the following year.

Algebra A/B (4 Terms) Prerequisites/Requirements: Teacher recommendation Students will study concepts from Pre-Algebra over one term, followed by three terms of Algebra 1 concepts. Students will understand and use basic properties of the real number system. They will solve problems involving signed number operations, simple equations, and order of operations. Students will solve and graph one variable equations and inequalities and solve systems of equations using graphing, substitution and linear combinations. They will analyze data and model linear (1st degree) equations and inequalities. They will solve and graph quadratic equations (2 degree) and perform operations of polynomials.

Algebra I (2 Terms) Students will solve and graph one variable equations and inequalities, and solve systems of equations using graphing, substitution, and linear combinations. They will analyze data and model linear (1st degree) equations and inequalities.

Areas of Study: Properties of Real Numbers, Probability and Statistics, Solving Equations and Inequalities, Linear equations and Functions, Systems of Equations and Inequalities, Expressions with Exponents/Operations on Polynomials, and Factoring Polynomials.

Geometry (2 Terms) Prerequisites/Requirements: Algebra I with a passing grade.

Students will use the properties of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes and will also calculate perimeter, circumference, area, surface area, and volume. Students will use reasoning and methods of proof to verify geometric properties.

Algebra II (2 Terms) Prerequisites/Requirements: Algebra I and Geometry with a passing grade.

Students will solve and graph linear (1st degree) and quadratic (2nd degree) functions. Students will solve systems of linear equations (using matrices) and non-linear equations and inequalities. They will apply probability and statistics to theoretical and real-life problems. Students will graph and solve polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and rational functions.

College Algebra (2 Terms) Prerequisites/Requirements: Geometry and Algebra II with a passing grade.

This course is the study of relations, functions and their graphs, equations and inequalities, polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of equations and inequalities. *This class can be taken for Dual Credit with a qualifying ACT, ACCUPLACER, or MAP score. *BOTH terms must be taken to receive college credit.

Statistics (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Geometry and Algebra II with a C or higher or teacher approval The course is an introduction to basic probability and statistical methods that are used in a wide variety of disciplines.

Topics include descriptive statistics, probability foundations, probability distributions, sampling distributions, methods of statistical inference, and bivariate relationships. *This class can be taken for Dual Credit with a qualifying ACT, ACCUPLACER, or MAP score Trigonometry (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: College Algebra with a C or higher or teacher approval

Designed for students who plan further study at the calculus level. Numerical trigonometry, trigonometric analysis, inverse trigonometric functions, and complex numbers. *This class can be taken for Dual Credit with a qualifying ACT, ACCUPLACER, or MAP score AND/OR taken College Algebra for dual credit with a C or higher Calculus I (2 Terms) Prerequisites/Requirements: College Algebra and Trigonometry with a C or higher or teacher approval This course is a study of analytical geometry and single variable calculus. Topics include limits, continuity, derivatives, applications of derivatives, integrals, and applications of integrals. *This class can be taken for Dual Credit with a qualifying ACT, ACCUPLACER, or MAP score AND have a C or higher in dual credit College Algebra and dual credit Trig.

Science Physical Science (2 Terms-Freshman) Students will study the basic principles of Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science. Topics will include matter and its interactions, motion and stability, energy, waves and their applications in technologies for information transfer, and earth's place in the universe. This course provides an opportunity for students to obtain a background in problem solving, content, knowledge, and process skills.

Biology (2 Terms-Sophomore) General Biology is a course designed to give students a strong foundation in Life Science. Many concepts taught apply to future science courses and everyday life. Biology covers a variety of life science concepts including: Structure and processes of molecules to organisms; Ecosystem interactions, energy, and dynamics; Heredity inheritance and variation of traits; and Biological evolution. Also covered in the course are the Earth Science standards of Earth Systems and Human Activity.

Advanced Biology (2 Terms) Prerequisites/Requirements: Biology or teacher approval This course covers fundamental processes of cells and organisms, cell structure, genetics, evolution, classification, diversity, and interaction of organisms at the molecular, cellular, organismic, ecosystem, and biosphere level. Numerous labs and dissections are used to enhance student learning. *This class can be taken for Dual Credit Physiology & Anatomy (2 Terms) Prerequisites/Requirements: Advanced Biology with a C or higher or teacher approval Anatomy and Physiology is the study of the human body and how it functions at a college level. The chemical and physical phenomena associated with living processes are investigated as we study the various organ systems of the body.

Periodically, rats, fetal pigs, and various body organs are dissected for an overall better view of anatomical structure. *This class can be taken for Dual Credit if student has taken Advanced Biology for dual credit with a C or higher Chemistry (2 Terms) Prerequisites/Requirements: Algebra I, Physical Science, and Biology or teacher approval This course introduces students to the study of motion, force, and the relationship between matter and energy with an emphasis on concepts to make the math work. Laboratory exercises accompany all concepts to give students the experience of chemical and physical processes and to encourage deductive reasoning and critical thinking of concepts through observed facts.

College Chemistry (2 Terms) Prerequisites/Requirements: Algebra II with a C or higher.

This course has students study chemistry principles, methods, and techniques. It focuses on basic dimensional analysis, basic structure of the atom, the properties of elements, the quantum-mechanical model of the atom, the properties of

molecular shapes, inorganic compounds using correct nomenclature, chemical reactions by symbolic, numeric, and verbal means, simple reactions, energy transfer and basic thermodynamic relationships, stoichiometric relationships, properties of gases and gas laws, the principles of solutions and their concentrations, the properties of acids and bases, and safe and appropriate laboratory techniques. *This is a Dual Credit class Forensic Science (2 Terms) Prerequisites/Requirements: Physical Science and Biology or teacher approval This course incorporates and applies Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science principles to the science of studying crimes. Topics of exploration may include: processing a crime scene, collecting and preserving physical evidence, toxicology, arson investigation, serology, fingerprints, and document analysis.

Earth and Space Science (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Physical Science and Biology or teacher approval An introduction to Earth Science principles. Topics of exploration may include: time zones, latitude and longitude, matter and energy transfer, geosphere, volcanoes, and earthquakes.

Astronomy (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Physical Science, Biology, and Earth & Space Science or teacher approval This builds upon Earth Science principles in the area of Astronomy. We will examine the concept of modern astronomy through exploring topics such as: the basic laws of motion and gravity, how to scientifically explore the universe, the solar system, the sun and stars, the Milky Way, other galaxies, and the origins of the universe.

Environmental Science (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Physical Science, Biology, and Earth & Space Science or teacher approval This course builds upon Earth Science and Biology principles in the area of Environmental Science. We will examine mutual relationships between organisms and environment through exploring topics such as: photosynthesis, ecosystems, population and growth studies, pollution, recycling and regeneration, climate change, and conservation of natural resources.

Marine Science (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Physical Science, Biology, and Earth & Space Science or teacher approval This course builds upon Earth Science and Biology principles in the area of Marine Science. We will examine the content, features, and life of our planet’s oceans. Topics may include seafloor spreading, volcanism, fossils and the rock records, marine life and ecology, and marine mining, farming, and exploration Meteorology (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Physical Science, Biology, and Earth & Space Science or teacher approval This course builds upon Earth Science principles in the area of Meteorology. We will examine the properties of Earth’s atmosphere through topics such as: atmospheric layering, changing pressures, winds, water vapor, air masses, fronts, temperature changes, and weather forecasting.

Physics (2 Terms) Prerequisites/Requirements: Geometry and Algebra II or teacher approval This course is a survey of physics at a conceptual and Algebra based level. Students will work a variety of problems from kinetics, static, heat, electricity, optics, and nuclear physics. Students will learn about the scientific enterprise, the scope of physics, the role of measurement and mathematics in physics, and the relationship between physics and everyday phenomena. Students will be able to understand and apply the concepts of Newton’s laws of gravity, Pascal’s and Archimedes’ Principles of atmospheric pressure and gas laws, and other scientific laws over thermodynamics, electricity and energy, motion and momentum, waves, atoms, nuclear structures, and quantum mechanics. *This is a Dual Credit class

Social Studies Civics/Economics (2 Terms-Freshman) This class is designed to teach students about the roles and responsibilities as a citizen of the United States. We will be learning about the basic concepts of American government and citizenship. Students will also gain a general understanding of economics, the role of government in our economy, and the role our US government has on the world economy. Designed for freshmen.

World History (2 Terms-Sophomore) This course is a study of history from the ancient world to modern times. Topics emphasized will be the Renaissance, Reformation, Exploration, Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, World Wars, and the Modern Era. United States History (2 Terms-Junior) This course is an examination of United States history from the Civil War to current events shaping America today.

Students will study recurring themes throughout history such as democracy, capitalism, and popular culture through a chronological and critical lens. Students will be expected to use critical thinking skills, analyze historical documents and primary sources, and complete projects detailing important topics in US history.

Advanced United States History (2 Terms-Junior) *American History I to 1877 (1 Term) A survey of American history from the pre-colonial era through the period of Reconstruction. Emphasis will be placed on the political, cultural, social, religious, and institutional development of the nation. The course will include colonial development, the American Revolution, constitutional evolution and the establishment of the new republic, Jacksonian democracy, the market revolution and reform movements, slavery, westward expansion, the war with Mexico, sectionalism, the Civil War, and the social problems in the growth of the American nation. *American History II since 1877 (1 Term) The continued examination of American history since Reconstruction (1877) includes a social, cultural, political, intellectual, and economic analysis of the following major issues: industrialized corporate capitalism and its struggle with labor, Gilded Age politics, Populism, the continued settlement of the frontier west and its resistance, immigration, imperialism and the Spanish-American War, Progressivism, World War I and the paradoxes of the interwar period, the Great Depression, the New Deal, World War II, post-war prosperity, cultural disillusionment and the civil rights movement, the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam, the Reagan Revolution, and America as the dominant contemporary world power. A heavy emphasis on reading, research, and writing will be a regular part of this course. *Advanced US History can be taken for Dual Credit American Government (1 Term-Senior) Prerequisites/Requirements: U.S. History or Advanced U.S. History This course explores the functions of local, state, and national political systems through analysis and application of governmental theories and practices. These topics will span from the Gilded Age during the late 19th century to present day. This course is designed to introduce you to a variety of critical approaches used

in the study of popular culture. Our objective, look at how popular culture, in its entirety, and look not only on how we identify the world around us but also the scope in which we observe the world around us. We will tackle elements such as music, conspiracy theories, video games, movements, internet, geography, and the influence of social media. Ancient Civilization (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: World History Ancient Civilizations will provide a thorough study of different civilizations including: Early Humans, Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Ancient India, Ancient China, Classical Greece, and the rise and fall of the Roman Empire.

The different civilizations will be examined under the subjects of geography, family life, government, war, the roles of men, the roles of women, arts, architecture, religion, and trade. This course develops a basic understanding of the history of major world cultures. It imparts a general chronology of world history and an overview of world geography. It also examines important themes and trends that affect more than one world civilization.

International Relations (1 Term-Senior) Prerequisites/Requirements: U.S. History or Adv. U.S. History This course examines and analyzes how and why countries act as they do in contemporary international relations, power, war, resource allocation, multinational corporations and international organizations. The course also covers contemporary global issues including drugs, the environment, population, and economic development. *This class can be taken for Dual Credit Sociology (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: World History Sociology is the scientific study of human society and social behavior. Six different areas of sociology will be emphasized in the class: social institutions, organizations, groups, positions, social inequalities, and social roles. This course will enable a student to better understand self through learning about and understanding one’s social environment.

Psychology (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: World History Psychology is the scientific study of human and animal behavior in its entirety. Through willingness to participate in classroom activities, the student will be able to better understand his/her own behavior as well as the behavior of others.

Some topics to be covered are mental health, intelligence, memory and learning, emotions, sensation, and perception.

Agriculture, food and natural resources careers, cluster foundation knowledge and skills, leadership development, the FFA organization, and career exploration will be explored. Students will take part in supervised agricultural experiences and leadership programs and activities.

Animal Science focuses on the basic scientific principles and processes that are involved in animal physiology, breeding, nutrition, and care in preparation for an animal systems career. Topics include animal diseases, introduction to animal science, animal nutrition, animal reproduction, animal science issues, career opportunities, and animal evaluation. Students will take part in supervised agricultural experiences and leadership programs and activities.

Veterinary Science (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Intro to Ag., Food & Natural Res. AND Animal Science or teacher approval **This course is a capstone of the Animal Systems Career Pathway.

Veterinary Science is a capstone course designed to introduce students to the basics of animal care. Topics covered include veterinary terminology, disease, parasites, feeding, shelter, grooming, and general animal care requirements. Students will take part in supervised agricultural experiences and leadership programs and activities. As part of the course, students will be expected to job shadow at two different veterinary clinics in town for 3 hours at each site (total= 6 hours). Special Instructions: You must be able to transport yourself or have a parent/guardian transport you to your job shadowing experiences. Parents/guardians will have to sign a waiver allowing you to complete your shadowing.

Large Animal Management (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Intro to Ag., Food & Natural Resources AND Animal Science or teacher approval **This course is a capstone of the Animal Systems Career Pathway.

This class includes advanced scientific principles and communication skills that build on the knowledge and skills learned in Animal Science. Topics include animal waste management, animal science and economics, decision making, global concerns in the industry, genetics, and breeding. Students will take part in supervised agricultural experiences and leadership programs and activities.

Resources or teacher approval Wildlife Management is the capstone course for the Environmental & Natural Resources Pathway that provides students the opportunity to increase awareness of the principles of wildlife management and conservation. Students will closely examine ecological concepts, habitat management, wildlife species identification, and recreational opportunities that the environment and wildlife provide us with. Classroom and laboratory activities are supplemented through supervised agricultural experiences and leadership programs and activities.

Art The Art Department cultivates intellectual abilities and creative expression by providing learning experiences to individuals which develop discriminative producers and audiences of art. The artistic scale of visualizing, observing, interpreting, evaluating, and producing will be covered.

Art I (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: $20 project fee and sketchbook This is an introductory class, a prerequisite to all other art classes, designed to cover basic art fundamentals, elements & principles of design, and art history. Design originality, creative self-expression, and development of objective and decisive thought processes are greatly stressed.

Art II (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Art I or teacher approval, $20 project fee, and sketchbook This is a level two art class designed as a prerequisite for all advanced art courses. Students will be expected to strive toward greater quality of craftsmanship, originality, and creativity of design and a greater degree of self expression in their art. Students will continue to explore art fundamentals, such as elements and principles of design with a wider variety of media. Students will further investigate essential artistic concepts: presentation, artistic criticism/response, creative processes, and aesthetics.

Ceramics I (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Art II or teacher approval, $20 project fee, and sketchbook Ceramic students will learn about ceramics as an art form. Topics covered include ceramic history and all facts of the ceramic process. A proficiency in the major construction methods will be required. A working knowledge of ceramic terminology and aesthetics will also be stressed.

Ceramics II (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Ceramics I or teacher approval, $20 project fee, and sketchbook Ceramics II is intended for serious art students with an interest in further pursuing visual arts. Mastery of technical & mechanical execution is emphasized. Projects will involve complicated clay construction, such as wheel throwing.

Drawing I (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Art II or teacher approval, $20 project fee, and sketchbook This is a specialized, level 3 art class focusing on various methods of drawing. It is designed to teach students basic drawing skills and allow them to explore various drawing types and techniques. Drawing I reviews art fundamentals such as elements and principles of design, and composition. Students will investigate essential artistic concepts: presentation,

artistic criticism/response, creative processes, aesthetics, and color theory. Students will also make connections to the visual communication in other cultures and in history.

Drawing II (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Drawing I or teacher approval, $20 project fee, and sketchbook This is a specialized, level 4 art class focusing on various methods of drawing. As a continuation of Drawing I, this course is designed to allow students to hone drawing skills and delve deeper into mediums and techniques of choice. Drawing II reviews art fundamentals such as elements and principles of design. Students will further investigate essential artistic concepts: presentation, artistic criticism/response, creative processes, aesthetics, and color theory.

Art Multimedia (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Art II or teacher approval, $20 project fee, and sketchbook Art Multimedia is a level 3 art class. Students need to have successfully passed Art I and Art II as prerequisites for this course. Multimedia is designed to cover information within different media that is not offered in other art courses.

Students are required to draw and create original artwork. Art Multimedia holds an emphasis on design and creative use of new materials, methods, and techniques. Students will also learn about various processes, such as image transferring, printmaking, collage, etc. while discovering how to combine multiple types of media.

Painting I (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Art II or teacher approval, $20 project fee, and sketchbook This is beginning painting which will focus on the control of and the characteristics of various painting mediums. Students' ability to manipulate a variety of painting mediums will be key in their success. Technique studies will be emphasized.

Painting II (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Painting I or teacher approval, $20 project fee, and sketchbook Designed for serious art students who have completed Painting I and have decided to progress to a more advanced course of study in this medium. Various painting mediums, styles and techniques will be incorporated. Students are given assignments from the realistic and abstract realms. As they self-discover, students will make decisions about production of major individual projects. An adept degree of craftsmanship, creativity, and personal style will be stressed.

Printmaking (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Art II or teacher approval, $20 project fee, and sketchbook This is an advanced course of study in the art of printmaking. Various printmaking techniques and the history will be studied, analyzed, and practiced, Students will be introduced to printmaking artists, their backgrounds and the development of their craft. Class discussion, comparative studies, production, and critique will be the focal points of this course.

Sculpture (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Art II or teacher approval, $20 project fee, and sketchbook This class will provide the student with competence and processes to creatively express themselves in a three-dimensional manner. A refined quality of craftsmanship and execution will be stressed. This studio class will cover major methods of three-dimensional creating with various media surrounding a historical survey of sculpture.

Textiles (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Art II or teacher approval, $20 project fee, and sketchbook In this level 3 art class, students will learn various techniques of manipulating, creating, and utilizing textiles to create artwork. Students will review art fundamentals such as elements and principles of design, as well as investigate essential artistic concepts: presentation, artistic criticism/response, creative processes and aesthetics.

Advanced Art Study (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Art II or teacher approval. Level 3 art class, $20 project fee and sketchbook Advanced Art Study is a one-term class offered by permission only to art students showing self-motivation and a high level of interest in art. Emphasis will be placed on originality, craftsmanship, and aesthetics. The objectives will be created with an individual student-instructor contract. College bound students may focus on a portfolio.

Art History I (1 Term) Art History is designed to cover the historical function and importance of art and artists from prehistory through the end of the 18th century.

Business/Technology The Business & Technology Department assists students in developing and applying the use of technology, business and economic concepts, and legal principles in their lives. Students will acquire the necessary skills for personal use, entry-level employment, and post-secondary education.

IT Fundamentals (1 Term) Students are introduced to the proper use of information technologies (IT). In addition, they will be introduced to hardware and software selection and use, technology resource support, and ethical issues. Students will investigate information technology careers and certifications in networking, programming, and IT support services. Units would include, but not be limited to exploring concepts in networking, programming, and support services, computer hardware components and peripherals, system and application software, and impact of technology on society.

Digital Media (1 Term) Students will create, design, and produce digital media including photo manipulation, video, and graphics. Class includes fun and interactive photo and video projects. This class acts as an introduction to our video production program or graphic design classes.

Graphic Design (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Digital Media or Computer App. II or teacher approval Students will focus on developing advanced skills to plan, design, and create interactive projects using elements of texts, graphics, and digital imaging. These skills will prepare students for entry-level positions in the digital design field.

Students will demonstrate proper use of copyright and fair use throughout the course.

Adv. Graphic Design (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Graphic Design or teacher approval Students will focus on developing advanced skills to plan, design, and create interactive projects using elements of tests, graphics, and digital imaging. These skills will prepare for entry-level positions in the digital design field. Students will demonstrate proper use of copyright and fair use throughout the course. This is a term-long project of student choice.

Students need to have good time-management skills. Should probably wait to take this class as a Junior or Senior in most cases.

Computer Applications I (1 Term) Students will explore technologies focusing on the importance of professional communication practices, document processing, spreadsheet applications, database applications, presentations, and digital citizenship.

Computer Applications II (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Computer Applications I or teacher approval This course will focus on skill development in advanced spreadsheet, database, integration of applications utilizing advanced features, and exploring web technologies. Students taking both Computer Applications I and II may be eligible for articulated or dual credit at a participating postsecondary institution. Skills, standards, and coursework aligned with industry certifications. *This class can be taken for Dual Credit Programming I (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: IT Fundamentals with a C or higher or teacher approval Designed to be the first computer science course for students who have never programmed before, Foundations of Computing is a starting point for Computer Science. Students will explore the impact of computing in society and build skills in digital citizenship and cybersecurity. Beyond learning the fundamentals of programming, students build computational-thinking skills by applying computer science to collaboration tools, modeling and simulation, and data analysis.

Advanced Video Production (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Video Production or teacher approval Students will continue to expand their video skills of interviewing, reporting, writing, editing, videography, and design.

Students will have an opportunity to write, shoot, and direct their own documentary or movie short. The emphasis of Video Production II is to work both independently and collaboratively to create a professional product while meeting deadlines.

Accounting (2 Terms) The goal of Accounting is to help students learn the basic accounting procedures used to operate a business.

Business Law (1 Term) Business law helps students develop an appreciation for law and a basic understanding of their rights and responsibilities necessary to be informed and productive citizens, employees, employers, and consumers in the free enterprise system.

Included in this study are such topics as contracts, crimes, the court system, commercial paper, juvenile law, and insurance.

Careers (1 Term-Freshman) Students learn and apply the career and college planning process using the Nebraska Career Education Model and related resources. Students will identify and apply personal interests, skills, and values to both academic and career decision making. Students will demonstrate progress/proficiency in Nebraska Career Readiness Standards of Practice which are current expectations in today's workplace. Students will activate the planning process by setting goals and developing and implementing a Personal Learning Plan for effective transition from high school to most appropriate post-secondary education based on knowledge of self, career goals, and financial considerations. Students will create resumes and complete mock interviews for college and career readiness.

Career Internship (1 Term-Junior/Senior) Prerequisites/Requirements: Careers, Child Dev., Psych. (for educational careers) or teacher approval Students have to be able to show that they have begun taking classes for the career internship experience they plan on completing. For example, Teaching Interns need to have taken one of the following classes: Psychology, L.E.A.D., Intro to Education Careers, or Early Childhood Development. Career Internships are competitive and require an application process to be completed. Applications need to be received and approved prior to the start of the term that the student wishes to complete a Career Internship.

Introduction to Business, Marketing, and Management (1 Term) The purpose of Introduction to Business, Marketing, and Management is to give students an introductory overview of the world of business. Students who take this course will learn about topics such as economic decisions and systems, social responsibility of business and government, forms of business ownership, management and leadership, entrepreneurship and small business management, work culture, and work diversity.

Marketing (1 Term) Students will explore the basic functions of marketing. The curriculum provides for the foundational skills and knowledge in economics, communication skills, professional career development, business, management, and entrepreneurship.

Medical Terminology (1 Term) Medical terminology equips the student with a usable vocabulary unique to the medical profession. The student will be able to define and use terms relating to the structure of the human body systems such as the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, lymphatic and immune, respiratory, digestive, urinary, nervous, the eyes and ears, integumentary, endocrine, and reproductive systems, diagnostic and imaging procedures, and general medical terminology.

Health Sciences (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Healthy Lifestyles and Biology.

Introduction to Health Science focuses on medical careers, exploration, leadership development, medical terminology, basic anatomy, ethical/legal responsibilities, and the history of health care. The course is designed to give students an overview of the medical career pathways and the work associated with them. Students will gain a well-rounded introduction to the Medical Career field and an insight into future medical related classes.

Personal Finance (1 Term) The goal of this class is to help students become financially responsible, conscientious members of society. The course develops student understanding and skills in money management, budgeting, financial goal attainment, use of credit, insurance, and taxes.

Communication Language Arts The Communication Department aides in the development and mastery of analytical and critical writing, and speaking skills and the confidence to express their opinions and research clearly.

Basic Communication (1 Term) This Basic Communication course will provide instruction and practice in basic communication skills: verbal and nonverbal communication, listening, group discussion, and public speaking. Students will give a variety of speeches including impromptu, informative, and persuasive speeches. Students will also be expected to take notes from time to time and may be given assessments over the information covered in the form of tests and quizzes. There will be frequent in-class assignments and work days. Students will be expected to use time wisely and participate well in class discussion and work diligently in both groups and on their own.

Public Speaking (1 Term) This course will assist the student to master the skills required of speaking in today’s workplace. This course will focus on the organization, preparation, research, and evidence needed for a presentation that is tailored to fit the audience. This course will enhance the student’s listening skills, which will assist them in everyday situations. *This class can be taken for Dual Credit Beginning Acting (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Basic Communication or Public Speaking or teacher approval This Beginning Acting course will provide instruction and practice in basic acting skills: verbal and nonverbal dialogue, listening, group chemistry, scripted work, and performance critique. Students will give a variety of performances and are up in front of the class almost daily. There will be frequent in-class assignments and work days. Students will be expected to use time wisely and participate well in class discussion and work diligently in both groups and on their own.

Advanced Acting (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Basic Communication or Public Speaking and Beg. Acting or teacher approval The purpose of Advanced Acting is to further explore the avenues and paths in the acting and theatrical fields. In this class, we will continue learning about improvisation, developing and increasing chemistry and community, working with

our bodies, creating characters through scripted work. The culminating project for this class is a full length production mounted in the Performing Arts Center at the high school. Students will be required to attend a few after school practices and the evening performances.

Introduction to Theatre (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Basic Communication or Public Speaking or teacher approval An introduction to the forms and functions of the dramatic arts within a historical perspective. Includes an introduction to basic theatre skills as well as an introduction to a range of dramatic literature. *This class can be taken for Dual Credit Journalism I This is a writing-intensive introductory class to journalism to support the student newspaper and yearbook. Students will learn media law and ethics; news values; Associated Press (AP) style; interview and journalism research techniques; news, feature, opinion and/or sports writing; and layout design and/or photo editing techniques. This is a prerequisite for joining Journalism II (Yearbook or Newspaper).

Photography Prerequisites/Requirements: $20 project fee This course is an introduction to the principles of digital photography with an emphasis on photojournalism. Students will learn photography fundamentals, digital camera functions, basic photo editing, basic reporting for caption writing, and photojournalism ethics. This is a prerequisite for joining Journalism II (Yearbook or Newspaper).

Journalism II-Newslab (2 Terms) Prerequisites/Requirements: Journalism I or Photography or advisor’s permission; application required; Annual fee of $20, school activity requirements: code of conduct forms, and $40 activity card Journalism II-Newspaper is a student-led, laboratory-style course that creates the monthly student newspaper "The Bulldogger" its corresponding online news site. Students will engage in ethical journalism while generating stories based on news values, apply research and journalistic interview techniques to cover content for the paper and website. Students will use graphic design and photo editing to produce a professional-looking print edition each month. Students also develop business and leadership skills.

Journalism II-Yearbook (2 Terms) Prerequisites/Requirements: Journalism I or Photography or advisor’s permission; application required; Annual fee of $20, school activity requirements: code of conduct forms, and $40 activity card Journalism II-Yearbook is a student-led, laboratory-style course that creates the annual. Students will engage in ethical journalism while generating stories based on news values, apply research and journalistic interview techniques to cover specific events and other coverage for the yearbook. Students will use graphic design and photo editing to produce a professional-looking annual. Students also develop business and leadership skills.

Family and Consumer Science: Human Sciences and Education The FCS Department provides students an opportunity to identify and find solutions for the problems and concerns of society, family, and the individual through practical experiences in decision making, mental health, and education. Each cluster consists of a program of study with 3 levels of course instruction.

Program of Study: Child, Youth and Family Studies Human Growth and Development (Intro Course 1) (1 Term) This course is a prerequisite to this program of study and explores the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of individuals across the lifespan. External impacts on development including family structure and practices, social and technological forces, and resources available to individuals and their outcomes will be explored. Grade level 9-11. Students must receive a C or above to continue in this pathway.

OR Intro to FCS (Intro Course 1) (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: $5 fee This introductory course is intended to enable students to have a broad scope of experiences that will provide an overview and fundamental knowledge and essential skills of Human Sciences with a foundation but not limited to family and consumer sciences. Students will explore career possibilities and develop a personal learning plan. Students will practice

Course time is used as an interactive learning environment in which students are actively teaching young children. Students will compile their information toward an employment portfolio.

Program of Study: Education and Training Human Growth and Development (Intro Course 1) (1 Term) This course is a prerequisite to this program of study and explores the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of individuals across the lifespan. External impacts on development including family structure and practices, social and technological forces, and resources available to individuals and their outcomes will be explored. This course is a continuation of the Introduction to Education and Training course and is the second course in a four-course sequence. Students will further engage in topics related to instructional and assessment methods, including differentiation of instruction. Students will also develop active listening skills necessary for educators, and demonstrate positive feedback techniques. Students will gain skills related to planning for instruction, which will be utilized in the field experience.

Grade level 10-12. Students must receive a C or above to continue in this pathway.

Field Experience in Education and Training Field Experience (Capstone Course) (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Best Practices in Ed. and Training with a C or higher or teacher approval This course is a continuation of the Best Practices in Education and Training course and is the third course in a three-course sequence. Through this capstone experience, students will apply previously developed knowledge and skills into a structured workplace experience. This volunteer experience may take place within a school environment for those seeking teaching careers, or within the business and industry community for those seeking careers in professional, educational training. Goals are set cooperatively by students, their instructor, and respective supervising professionals. Opportunities may include experience teaching in a controlled setting by designing learning experiences and facilitating presentations.

Students will focus on improving their instructional strategies through coaching from their teacher and supervising professionals. Grade level 11-12.

Program of Study: Counseling and Mental Health Intro to FCS (Intro Course 1) (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: $5 fee This course is intended to enable students to have a broad scope of experiences that will provide an overview and fundamental knowledge and essential skills of Human Sciences with a foundation but not limited to family and consumer sciences. Students will explore career possibilities and develop a personal learning plan. Students will practice basic life and career readiness skills and learn to apply them to personal life situations. Families in Crisis (Course 2) (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Intro to FCS with a C or higher or teacher approval In this course students identify positive and negative impacts on families including stress, changes in the family life cycle, grief and loss, and mental health disorders. Students will compare and contrast counseling services needed to support families and the types of services available to address conflict and abuse.

Sociology (Capstone Course) (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: World History and Families in Crisis or teacher approval Sociology is the scientific study of human society and social behavior. Six different areas of sociology will be emphasized in the class: social institutions, organizations, groups, positions, social inequalities, and social roles. This course will enable a student to better understand self through learning about and understanding one’s social environment.

OR Psychology (Capstone Course) (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: World History and Families in Crisis or teacher approval Psychology is the scientific study of human and animal behavior in its entirety. Through willingness to participate in classroom activities, the student will be able to better understand his/her own behavior as well as the behavior of others.

Some topics to be covered are mental health, intelligence, memory and learning, emotions, sensation, and perception.

Program of Study: Design Intro to Design Principles (Intro Course 1) (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: $10 Lab Fee + Supplies Students explore the definition and application of elements and principles of design in both living spaces and clothing and textiles. Entrepreneurship (Capstone Course 3) (1 Term) 2021-2022 Prerequisites/Requirements: Interior Design or Textile Const. with a C or higher or teacher approval & $10 Lab Fee + Additional supplies This is a course with emphasis on the evaluation of the business skills and commitment necessary to successfully operate an entrepreneurial venture and explore the challenges and rewards of business ownership. The role of small business in the US and the impact on the economy will be discussed. Work based learning strategies will be used in the creation of a student run business (summative project).

Music The NPHS Music Department cultivates each student’s musical abilities and potential through a sequential development of musical skills, provides creative experiences for an opportunity of personal success, and attains an appreciation of music and its potential for life-long participation and enjoyment.

Concert Choir (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: at least one year of mixed choir (for a transfer student one year of singing in a choir) or instructor approval Concert choir is a choral organization which will provide the opportunity for the more advanced choral student to study, in depth, a variety of SATB music in a formal concert atmosphere. Singing techniques such as diction, dynamics, musical interpretation, phrasing, posture, energy level and stage presence will be observed, practiced and performed by the concert choir student. Junior Varsity Band (1 Term-Freshman/Sophomore)

9th grade-4 terms 10th grade-3 terms Prerequisites/Requirements: Participation in 8th grade band and/or instructor’s approval & Activity Card The JV Band helps the students to advance their technical, theory, and musical skills. The JV Band will perform at the discretion of the instructor. Jazz ensemble is a performing group within the JV Band. Participation in winter pep band is expected. There will be opportunities for participation in honor bands and music contests.

Junior Varsity Orchestra (1 Term-Freshman/Sophomore) Prerequisites/Requirements: Previous string training and/or instructor’s approval Students will polish existing skills and techniques, and will be able to perform music of Grade III in level of difficulty in orchestral literature during the year. Students may have some instructions in music theory and music appreciation.

Attendance at scheduled concerts is required.

Marching Band (1 Term-all levels) Prerequisites/Requirements: Audition and/or instructor’s approval, $25 fee, and an activity card The Marching Band will march at football games and at competitions decided by the instructor. The class fee will cover uniform rental, cleaning, gloves, shoes and any other accessories needed.

Mixed Choir (1 Term-all levels) This course is open to all students in grades 9-12. This is a beginning level performance based class that will introduce students to the basics of singing as a choral ensemble. Repertoire will include anything from Broadway musicals to Classical selections suitable to fit the needs of the singers. This course is designed to help singers develop their musical talents through using proper vowel formation, phrasing, interpretation, and breath control. Some music theory will be integrated into this course directed at making singing and musicianship more enjoyable. Since this is a performance based class, attendance at all scheduled performances is expected and required.

Music Appreciation (1 Term-Junior/Senior) Prerequisites/Requirements: English 10 or teacher approval This class explores the various elements of music: musical sounds, rhythms, melodies, harmonies, timbres, formal designs, and performances; studies the way music is reflected in our society and other cultures; prepares students to become familiar with the music of various time periods, to understand the progression of music from a historical perspective, and to develop a greater appreciation of music and to begin to recognize the role that music plays in today’s society. *This class can be taken for Dual Credit Music Theory (1 Term-Junior/Senior) This class will cover beginning, intermediate, and advanced music theory. Guitar theory and jazz theory, as well as music composition and music technology may also be included. The curriculum will be determined per individual student by the instructor.

Varsity Band (1 Term-Sophomore/Junior/Senior) Prerequisites/Requirements: Audition and/or instructor’s approval, $20 uniform fee, & activity card The Varsity Band is designed for the more advanced student. The band will perform at concerts throughout the semester, will provide music for athletic events, community service, and provide students the chance to participate in Honor Bands and Music Contests. Participation in pep band is expected. “Jazz Ensemble” is a select jazz performing ensemble chosen from the Varsity Band.

A holistic approach of physical, mental and social health topics will be presented including communicable and non-communicable disease, healthful eating habits, stress management, substance use and abuse, and human sexuality.

Aerobic Training (1 Term) This is an advanced physical education class for students interested in achieving their highest level of health-related fitness.

Class activity emphasizes improving health-related fitness through strength training, and cardiovascular conditioning.

Fitness and strength testing will be required.

Lifetime Activities (1 Term) This course includes activities & skills that encourage worthy use of leisure time while emphasizing the importance of maintaining fitness after graduation. Students are required to complete 4-5 fitness tests during the course. Activities include Frisbee Golf, Bowling, Badminton, Volleyball, Pickleball, Boater Safety Course (when possible).

Strength & Conditioning I (1 Term) This course provides an opportunity for development of strength and conditioning for various sports and fitness related activities. Free weights, exercise machines, and conditioning activities are incorporated to promote improvement in strength, endurance, balance, agility, and speed. Proper technique, safety precautions, and proper application of the Principles of Training will be emphasized. A plan to achieve goals will be developed and implemented during this course.

Auto 1 is for students wanting to learn about the car they drive. Students will have both class and lab activities in order to maintain and repair automobiles. Students will learn how to properly buy and sell cars. This course will include general service, wheels and tires, suspension and steering basics, transmission basics, starting and charging diagnosis, lighting and fuse repair.

Auto 2 is for students wanting to repair automobiles both new and old. Students will explore all areas of the automobile.

You will learn how new cars operate and apply these concepts to what you drive. You will repair electronic ignitions, brakes, and even onboard computers with confidence. You will perform tune-ups, starter and alternator overhaul, and replace suspension parts.

Auto 3 is for students wanting to repair automobiles both new and old. Students will repair their own cars, explore automatic transmissions and transaxle repair, and overhaul an automobile engine. A lab engine will be provided for you to overhaul. **Students who wish to drop the class at term must reassemble the school’s engine before dropping the class and receiving the term grade earned.** Electricity (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Pre-Alg. or enrolled in Algebra 1 or teacher approval and a $15 project fee Electricity is designed to introduce the student to the fundamental principles of electricity. Included in the course are the following passive electrical components: laboratory safety, symbol identification, sources of electricity; passive current circuits, in series, parallel and combination circuits. The related physical laws and theorems governing electricity, instrumentation, and lab project construction are also included. Students may, if they desire, construct (electrical) projects at their own expense.

Electronics (2 Terms) Prerequisites/Requirements: Algebra 1, Electricity, 1 or teacher approval and a $15 project fee Electronics is a class designed for the student to explore the field of electronics. Included within the framework of the course are the following areas: active component use with their symbol and circuit configurations, signal generation and amplification circuits in the first term, and then digital circuitry with its related gating circuits and Boolean Algebra in the second term. The laws and theorems governing the beginning of the field of electronics form the basis of this course. A project may be built by the student within his ability and at his own cost. Lab materials will be supplied, but project materials are to be supplied by the student at their own expense.

Engineering Drawing I (1 Term) This is a beginning class designed to help students become familiar with drafting tools and the techniques involved in using these tools in making drawings. This course is beneficial to anyone involved in jobs that require knowledge of drawing, blueprint reading, and computer aided drafting.

Computer Aided Design & Drawing (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Engineering Drawing I and/or teacher approval, $10 project fee CADD allows students to develop computer drawing skills. AutoCad is the most commonly used system in industry and education. CADD aids students interested in a wide variety of careers like architecture, drafting, machining, welding, construction, and manufacturing.

Metals Manufacturing (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: $20 project fee.

The Metals course is designed to explore and learn the basics of working with metal. The class is project based learning to understand the applications of metal. Projects will be the following: sheet metal box, hammer, and offset screwdriver.

Residential Wiring (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: Electricity or teacher approval and a $15 project fee Residential wiring is a course where the fundamental circuits found in the home are constructed, tested, and trouble shot.

The course is based upon the most recent National Wiring Codes. This course is taught from the standpoint that each student will eventually own or rent a home.

Small Engines (1 Term) Prerequisites/Requirements: $15 project fee. Students will be required to purchase parts as needed.

This course will include theory, maintenance and overhaul of air-cooled engines. Units covered include theory, overhaul, ignition, fuel, and maintenance. Students will have the opportunity to tune up and repair a small engine.

Welding Manufacturing 1 (2 Terms) Prerequisites/Requirements: $20 project fee.

The welding class provides students with training in current welding processes. The processes of welding are SMAW (stick), GMAW (mig), GTAW (tig), and Oxygen with Acetylene torch. Students will perform their welds in the flat (1) position. Students will have the opportunity to build projects.

This is an entry level course in woodworking, providing a working foundation for the courses of Wood Manufacturing 2 and Construction. Hand, portable power, and stationary power tools will be studied and utilized. Using a variety of teaching techniques and student activities. The student will become more competent in the areas of basic woodworking knowledge and skills used for basic woodworking and general employability skills. This class deals primarily with furniture construction, cabinet making, and extends employability skills. Tools introduced in Woods 1 will be utilized to a greater extent. Students are required to pay for materials used in their project. Students are required to design and build a project.

Construction (1 Term: 2 Blocks) Prerequisites/Requirements: Woods 1 or teacher approval This course is designed to expose students to a variety of domestic and commercial construction techniques. Areas of study: construction tools, materials, processed (both modern and traditional), and safety. The course will provide a foundation for a student interested in job entry as well as a student interested in further training in construction.

World Languages The World Language Department provides students world language instruction that promotes communication, expands student perspectives and cultural awareness through the study of other cultures, and develops the skills necessary to become global citizens.

★ In addition to the above requirements, a student applicant must complete high school in the upper 1/2 of her/his class or score a 20 or higher on the ACT. ★ A unit is a Carnegie Unit, comprising high school study for a period of one year. Equivalent requirements or competencies may be substituted, with the approval of the appropriate University Campus. ★ Students who are unable to take two years of foreign language in high school may still qualify for admission. Such students will be required to take two semesters of foreign language at the University of Nebraska. These students are still required to complete 16 units of academic courses for admission.

Kearney Bound Scholars Program Objective To identify new high school students from families who meet the Federal government’s criteria for participation in TRIO programs and who also show academic promise; and to partner with the high school to maximize their opportunities for graduation from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

College Program • Directed academic and career advising • Tutoring • Mentoring • Financial assistance up to the cost of attendance. The significant financial commitment the University has made to the Kearney Bound Scholars Program has led to the necessity of some changes to the financial aid assistance granted by the institution being dependent upon the financial need qualifications of students admitted to the program. Pell Grant eligibility is now required, to receive full financial assistance for attendance.

Student Selection In early spring of the freshmen year, a committee composed of high school personnel, in consultation with UNK staff, will review available information and select a max of 12 participants using the following criteria: ● Demonstrated academic promise, ability, and motivation to participate ● First-generation college prospect (neither parent has a bachelor’s degree; or if single parent, the single parent does not have a bachelor’s degree) ● Nebraska resident and citizen or permanent resident of the United States ● Parental commitment to have the child participate ● Pell Grant eligible

Requirements for Continuation in Program While in High School: Students will be required to complete the core courses identified by UNK for admission to the University. The required courses include: • 3 years of mathematics: Algebra I & II plus geometry • 4 years of college-prep English • 3 years of science • 3 years of social studies • 2 years of the same foreign language • 1 year of an academic core elective (preferably a 4th year of math) **Early graduation is an option if all requirements are met.

High School Program The participating high school will provide: ● Directed advising ● Tutoring ● Mentoring ● Transportation to UNK for motivational experiences and exposure to opportunities here on campus ● Professional staff member to direct high school’s involvement and to be liaison with UNK staff

In addition to completing a course of study that meets the UNK Admission requirements, these college preparatory students will: • Attend and participate in all Kearney Bound Scholars Program activities at your school and at UNK. • Complete the PLAN (pre-ACT) in their sophomore year • Maintain a minimum overall grade point average of 2.85 and a minimum 2.5 in the core courses. Students who fail to meet these grade requirements at the end of the sixth semester (Junior year of HS) will be dismissed from the program.

• Register for ACT three times starting no later than April of the junior year (ACT waivers will be provided to those eligible for one exam)

UNK will provide • Professional staff member to direct UNK’s involvement and be a liaison with the high school • On-campus programming designed to motivate the students to earn a University degree • Assistance with financial aid, scholarship, and financial planning sessions for students and parents

While attending UNK the students will: • Earn a 2.5 grade-point average each academic year while taking a minimum of 12 credit-hours a semester • Show involvement in at least two student organizations annually

NCAA Athletic Eligibility All students planning to enroll in college as a freshman and wanting to participate in Division 1 or Division II athletics must be certified by the NCAA Eligibility Center.

The Eligibility Center was established to ensure consistent application of NCAA initial-eligibility requirements for all prospective student athletes at all member institutions.

It is the responsibility of the prospective student athlete to make sure the Eligibility Center has the documents it needs to certify Academic Redshirt if the requirements for a full qualifier are not met.

Division I 16 Core-Course Rule (Full Qualifier) 16 Core Courses 4 years of English 3 years of mathematics (Algebra I and higher) 2 years of natural science with 1 year of lab 1 year of additional Eng., Math., Natural Science 2 years of social science 4 years of additional courses (Eng., Math, Social Studies, Science) **Must complete 10 core classes of the 16 before Senior year **7 of 10 must be in English, Math, or Science

Test Scores ● Division I and Division II use a sliding scale for test score and Core grade point average (GPA). ● All SAT and ACT scores must be reported directly to the NCAA Eligibility Center from the testing agency.

When registering for the SAT or ACT, use Eligibility Center code 9999 to make sure the score is reported to the NCAA Eligibility Center.

Grade Point Average ● Only core course are used in the calculation of the GPA ● Division I has a sliding scale for GPA and test scores. Minimum Core GPA of 2.3. ● Division II has a sliding scale for GPA and test scores. Minimum Core GPA of 2.2.

Registration Process A student may register with the NCAA Eligibility Center at any time during his/her high school years. However, it is recommended that the student apply prior to taking the ACT or SAT exam.
