At the end of my Freshman year of college, I decided that I wanted to join the military, and having been a high school athlete, I chose the U.S. Marine Corps as I felt it would give me the most physical challenge. I completed all my training and served as a Military Policeman. After I had an unfortunate injury, I left the Marines and went into the civilian workforce. I have worked in a variety of different jobs & held several positions within the Federal Government. I have been on a career pause since November 2020 to raise our children. I came across NPower when my husband told me about one of his employee’s spouses going through the program, and he encouraged me to check it out. Ever since I started the program, I have learned so many new things and concepts that have really expanded on the basic working knowledge I already possessed through my learning and work experience. I am thankful for wonderful instructors that are not only knowledgeable but understanding of the various challenges an older cohort like myself faces and they are encouraging and uplifting every step of the way. Anwi Lillan Bonduh Before joining NPower, I worked part-time as a healthcare provider. I’ve tried various ways to break into the tech industry, but they haven’t been successful. I noticed that employers were looking for a specific set of skills that I wanted to acquire. With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, everything has moved to digital space. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, I decided to venture into IT. I began my career by enrolling in P.G.C.C., where I obtained an Associate Degree in Applied Science, majoring in Cybersecurity. However, I needed further training, professional experience, guidance, and mentorship to succeed in this new career path. That’s when I discovered NPower, which could help me transition from healthcare to Information Technology. During my time at NPower, my goals and objectives were streamlined, which helped me acquire the highly soughtafter skill sets demanded by nearly all IT companies. Looking back at my accomplishments, I received the CompTIA IT Fundamental (ITF+), CompTIA A+, and Google IT Support Specialization through e-learning on Coursera with the strict guidance of NPower instructors. I now possess the skills to join any team that is willing to put my training and expertise to use. I plan to continue refreshing and improving my skills by seeking more challenging assignments.

At the beginning of life, I wanted to study medicine, looking up to my elder brother as my mentor, who today is a specialist in O&G, but life didn’t take that route because I discovered I was better at fixing electrical and mechanical components and by so doing I went to college for Mechanical Engineering Technology where I bagged a bachelors’ degree at a CGPA of 3.28 out of 4.0. With a better understanding of how life is going and the study of Tech is becoming a niche, I stumbled on a flyer during my enlistment into the world’s greatest Air Force about NPower. I decided to grab the opportunity with both hands so that I could grow in the world of Tech. I enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 23 and was responsible for setting up LAN networks for high-ranking officers to communicate during wartime situations. After my discharge from the Army, I took up a job as a clerk at the U.S. Postal Service. Then, I was introduced to NPower by a neighbor who was an alumnus of the program. Despite my age, lack of IT knowledge, and concerns about the program’s time commitment, I took a leap of faith and applied to NPower. The program provided me with invaluable resources, knowledge, connections, and, most importantly, the confidence to work in IT. The only hurdles in the program are the ones you set for yourself. I highly recommend NPower to anyone willing to work hard and learn about IT.

Dylan Powell I found NPower through the Texas Workforce as I have struggled with funding since I was a child. I attempted to save for college after saving for and building my own computer but ran into social complications every step of the way. Finding NPower was an absolute blessing as not only is it about the topic that I’ve loved since I was a kid, but it let me actually be able to go to the classes as I would normally have no way of getting an education without this assistance. I genuinely cannot thank the people in this program enough for the help and direction they’ve given me in my life, thank you all so so much. Eric Donley At the beginning of my education at NPower, I was uncertain of where my life was headed. Through the teamwork of our teachers and staff, I found a place where I could interact with fellow students with a drive to learn about technology and start a new path in our careers. Through a family member, I learned of a great possibility for the future, and I could not be happier with all of the experiences I have been a part of. I look forward to continuing my education through the workforce and bringing all of the knowledge and experience I have gained with me. Thank you.

U.S. Air Force I previously served as an Aerospace Propulsion Journeyman in the U.S. Air Force. After completing active duty, I worked in various roles, such as case management and clerical positions. Through these roles, I noticed that advanced computer skills and literacy were crucial for career advancement. I was introduced to NPower by Work for Warriors, an organization that assists veterans in finding job and education opportunities. Although I already had some IT experience, I lacked the necessary certifications to enter the IT field. NPower helped me gain the required certifications and provided me with opportunities to work with different companies. The knowledge and skills I acquired through NPower helped me launch my IT career, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this program and organization.

I joined the US Army after graduating high school, working two jobs to put myself in college and feeling like I just didn’t have a direction. At 20, I had doubts about how life was progressing, feeling like college wasn’t providing me what I felt like I needed at the time, so I decided to serve my country from 2010 until 2019, serving multiple leadership roles from company to division level. After my time in the military ended started my career in EMS and firefighting. I began wanting to further my education in a new industry and heard about Npower, I saw it as a new learning experience and as something that I can build upon. Since starting the program, I’ve learned so much and have had so much support from all the staff, especially the instructors, who dedicated their time to ensure I understood the material in such a short time. I am so grateful to NPower for the opportunity they’ve provided for me, allowing me to have a chance at a new beginning.

Although I knew that I wanted to work with technology, I was not sure about the specific area to focus on and how to acquire the necessary education. However, I learned about NPower through my graduating school and found it to be a great fit for me. What attracted me to NPower was that it offered a free program with a flexible schedule. I decided to join because NPower convinced me that it was not as expensive or time-consuming as going to college, which I was unsure about at that time. During my time at NPower, I learned about the technical aspects of computers, including both hardware and software. I acquired my Google IT Support Certification and the CompTIA ITF+ Certification, which helped me gain new skills and knowledge. Moreover, I developed my soft skills and made new friends. With the skills I gained through the program, I feel confident about joining the workforce and making a positive impact on the world.

A friend, an alumnus of the Tech Fundamentals program, spoke enthusiastically about NPower and the opportunities it offered. Despite recognizing the growing importance of IT, I hadn’t envisioned myself in the industry. Encouraged by her conviction that this program could catalyze the career change I needed, I decided to reach out and apply. Since being accepted into NPower, the wealth of knowledge I’ve gained has been transformative. The program, encompassing both technical training and professional development days, has molded me into a more resilient and adept professional. NPower has not only broadened my professional network but has also introduced me to invaluable resources that will continue to support my development as an alum.

A+, and Google credentials, I eagerly anticipate the launch of my tech career and the prospect of securing a fulltime position or internship post NPower. My confidence in my own capabilities has grown. My goal is to gain practical experience in the field and, in due course, return to NPower to further my education through their Cybersecurity program.

Prior to Npower, I served 21 years in the United States Navy. My first ten years of service were in the Telecommunications field, and for the last 11 years, I served as a Religious Program Specialist Chief with the Chaplain’s Department. After retiring from active-duty service, I have held various jobs in the private sector, as well as with the Federal Government. I was recently laid off from my last two jobs due to a reduction in force. I heard about Npower through the Texas Veteran Commission Representative, located at the Texas Workforce Solutions Center in Arlington, TX. I had missed the previous sign-up by 3-weeks. When the opportunity came around this time, I made it a point to sign up in advance. I was interviewed by Mr. Darius Johnson, and shortly after, I received my documentation to sign and return to complete the enrollment. I began my Technical Support Fundamentals course on August 7, 2023. It is somewhat of a fast-paced course; however, the value this course holds will benefit me in the future. I would like to extend a warm-felt “Thank You” to Npower for this experience.

Tinesha Johnson This year has been bittersweet for me, a week before my graduation ceremony from the University of Texas at San Antonio. My father passed away he was my north star in life. I would call him and get the best advice, but he always told me how proud he was of me. I graduated with a Bachelor in Cybersecurity. I decided after graduation to move back to my hometown, Dallas, Texas to be closer to my nephews and nieces. I remember being in the military, I missed out on a lot of family gatherings. I was looking for jobs within my degree field, but it seemed like there was not any hope. Most jobs wanted either certifications, experience, or both. After I talked with my VA counselor, I decided to apply to NPower. I was blessed by my NPower Veteran counselor to vouch for me. Even though classes have already started, during this time, my little brother passed away. However, I can say I enjoyed my time at NPower and the staff. I am truly honored to have this opportunity. I have met some great people. I always wanted to learn technology and come up with inventions then one day start my own business. I am making my dreams come true.

Through the program, I have been able to explore different career paths that pair my innate talents and my technical education. I have recently discovered a potential career path as a scrum master that may be a very fitting role for me and my background. Von Eric Brown I have always had a strong passion for technology and pursued an Information Systems degree in college. After graduation, I found it hard to secure an entry-level job due to lack of experience. It was then that I discovered NPower at a job fair. Through their training program, my technical and professional skills improved rapidly. On virtual mentoring days, I had the opportunity to speak with industry professionals and learn from their personal experiences. The knowledge, skills, and experience gained from the program will be valuable as I begin my career. I plan to obtain additional certifications as I pursue a career in cybersecurity. NPower has given me a clear direction on my professional path and the confidence to achieve my goals.

Military Spouse: U.S. Navy Prior to joining NPower, my professional journey led me through roles as a warehouse operator and later as a customer care representative. It was during my time as a customer care representative that I recognized the growing importance of computer skills in the workforce. Intrigued by the prospect of acquiring these skills, I developed an interest in learning more. Fortunately, my spouse introduced me to NPower, and I was pleased to discover that the program welcomed military spouses. Entering the NPower program without any technical background, I have successfully gained the knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to kickstart my career in IT. I am grateful to NPower for providing the essential foundation that has propelled me into a new chapter of professional growth.

LAUNCHING TECH CAREERS.

TRANSFORMING LIVES NPower’s model is a solution to building a diverse tech pipeline. Our graduates launch tech

jobs with an average starting salary of $41,000–$60,000 and are positioned to advance their career path, enabling them to earn more than their peers in lower-wage jobs. Higher earning potential is the key to breaking generational cycles of poverty, positioning our students and their families to achieve long-term economic success.

We are the

FUTURE OF WORK Through partner and tech industry collaboration, our free training model is a workforce development solution for the future. In today’s economy, over 50% of all jobs require some degree of technology and digital skills. We prepare untapped, diverse talent to fill the number of technology-oriented jobs that will increase in the U.S. to 13 million by 2025, according to a recent Microsoft Data Science report that estimates that digital job capacity. Our graduates of over 8,000 veterans and young adults are hired at over 3,000 companies and nonprofits as interns and full-time employees. NPower is on a mission to create pathways to economic prosperity by launching digital careers for young adults and military veterans from underserved communities. Part of this goal is supported by our Command Shift Coalition, a national consortium of women and allies that advocate for strategies that invest in and inspire the advancement of young women of color in tech careers and aims to increase the representation of women of color in tech from 5% to 10% over the next 10 years. This coalition was sparked by ‘40 by 22’, a NPower initiative to help young women of color access the skills needed to launch careers in the tech industry in partnership with Citi Foundation’s Pathways to Progress initiative.
