Itinerary – Tour to Brazil Illinois Young Leaders, 2013 It is our pleasure to provide Illinois Young Farmers with this Itinerary featuring Brazilian agriculture and culture. We understand that the objectives for the delegation are to learn about 1) agriculture technology and agronomic practices in Brazil, 2) issues facing Brazilian farmers, and 3) the Brazilian culture. We have designed the following Program accordingly.

This morning you will arrive São Paulo Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) in Terminal 2 at 11:40 AM First you will clear immigration and customs. Then you will depart São Paulo to Curitiba (CWB) on a TAM flight JJ 3337 10NOV GRU/CWB 5:05P 5:57P After you arrive at Curitiba's Afonso Pena International Airport and collect your luggage, you will pass through the exit marked "DESEMBARQUE" and/or “SAÍDA” where you will meet your bilingual Tour Guide/Host Nadiel Kowalski. The city sits on a plateau at 3,058 ft above sea level. It is located 65 miles west of the seaport of Paranaguá. Curitiba is considered one of the best examples in urban planning worldwide.

After you exit the airport you will load your luggage onto your motor coach and you will drive downtown for a hotel check in and you'll have time to freshen up before dinner after the long and tiresome flight. The welcome dinner will be on a local typical Italian restaurant in a famous Italian neighborhood and then you’ll return to your downtown hotel. Curitiba - Ponta Grossa

06:30 Wake up call After Breakfast in your hotel, you will check out and drive to the Curitiba Municipal Market (Mercado Municipal de Curitiba). The Curitiba Municipal Market is a wonderful showplace of the region's food production (grains, fruits, vegetables, fish, flowers, organic) in addition to seasonings and flavorings from Brazil and other countries. The market will be an experience for all of your senses! www.mercadomunicipaldecuritiba.com.br Next you will drive to OCEPAR, the Office of the Paraná State Cooperative System. The Paraná State Cooperative System represents more than 230 affiliated cooperatives and congregates more than five hundred thousand members. It is made up by farmers, credit, educational, infrastructure, labor, transport, leisure and tourism, mineral, transport, housing and health cooperatives. The system represents more than 50% of the state rural Gross Domestic Product. www.ocepar.coop.br You will receive a presentation on OCEPAR and you will discuss issues important to farmers and their families. After lunch, you'll drive to Ponta Grossa (110km/65miles/1h30min) Along the way, you'll visit Fazenda Vila Velha, a grain and cattle operation with a total of 3,850 acres (1,540 ha) including corn 1,625 acres (650 ha), soy 1,650 acres (650 ha), dry bean 600 acres (240 ha), wheat 1,625 acres (650 ha), black oat as cover crop 2,225 acres (890 ha) and pastures 62 acres (25 ha). Grain storage facilities on the farm. Beef cattle herd of 180 heads of Aberdeen Angus, only bulls.

Day 4 • Tuesday, 12 November (B/L/D)* Ponta Grossa - Guarapuava 06:45 Wake up call After breakfast and check-out in your hotel, you’ll first drive to Castro (40km/23miles/50min) You'll have a reception at ABC Foundation (Fundação ABC). ABC Foundation is a Technical Research Institution that belongs to three Dutch origin cooperatives: Arapoti, Batavo, and Castrolanda Cooperatives. It generates information for the coop members in different areas including Precision Agriculture, Mechanization, Disease Information, Forage Crops, Agro-meteorological Monitoring System, Soil Fertility, Crop Protection, Horbology, Entomology and Phytotechny. It fulfills the same function for the coop farmers as our Extension Service provides for our farmers. www.fundacaoabc.org.br

After lunch at a Brazilian steakhouse you will visit the impressive Immigrant Memorial 10-story high windmill! www.moinhocastrolanda.com.br

After the windmill visit you‘ll visit the Grain Reception Facilities of the Castrolanda Cooperative. With 750 members, it is a fine example of cooperativism and high agricultural yields. Their agriculture is 100% no till and they are #1 in Brazil in milk production. They also have modern pig farmers. The annual income for the Cooperative is $750 million. www.castrolanda.coop.br

Before driving to Guarapuava you’ll visit another grain farm in Castro region. Fazenda Curralinho is a self-sufficient grain operation. Farm size 1.150 ha (2.875 acres) with 900 (2.250 acres) utilized for grains. The rest area is for Legal Reserve and Preservation. Main crops in the Summer – soybean, corn and dry beans. Reception, drying and storage facilities on the farm.

Dining stop for the evening will be on the way at a Brazilian Churrascaria. There you will be presented with an assortment of Brazilian salad items and side dishes. And then, the waiters will serve you cuts of various meats carved right onto your plates. You can also choose sandwich and French fries instead of full meal. 06:45 Wake up call After breakfast in your hotel and check-out you will drive to the Agrária Cooperative (15minutes) In 2011, to celebrate the cooperatives Golden Jubilee, the Suabian Museum was opened to tell their story. You will have an opportunity to visit the museum. The Agrária Cooperative was founded by Germanspeakers who previously lived in the former Kingdom of Hungary and who immigrated to Brazil after WWII.

Agrária Cooperative is a German origin cooperative. It has approximately 500 members, farming about 260,000 acres, with an annual production of $500 million. They produce corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, and barley. They are the largest malt supplier for Brazilian breweries, they have a wheat milling plant, and they have a large soybean crushing plant. www.agraria.com.br

Visit the research fields of the Agraria Foundation of Agricultural Research. FAPA was founded in 1994 to systematize rural research. Today, because of the quality of its many researchers that work for the institution, FAPA provides reference information that is used on both a state and national basis. The Research Plots cover 550 acres for research on corn, wheat, barley and oats. Next you will visit a Brewery operated by a German couple. Donau Bier Brewer started in 2004; the homemade beer produced there follows the Reinheitsgebot German Quality Law for making beer which dates from 1516: it states that a beer is pure only when the ingredients are water, malt and hop.

The 55 pioneers could badly imagine that were creating one of the most solid Cooperatives in Brazil. Located at the West end area of Parana State, the Cooperative comprises 12 municipalities and has 14 branches acting in 12 municipal districts, with 8.000 members and 6.000 employees. It counts with 14 units of grain reception and industrializes soybean, cassava, frozen vegetables and chicken, a feeding plant and 13 spare shops and supermarkets. Iguassu Falls is one of the most famous attractions of South America. Iguaçu Falls stretches along the rim of a crescent-shaped cliff about 2.5 miles, with some 275 individual cascades and waterfalls plummeting up to 270 feet into the gorge below. Situated in almost 40 acres of second-growth subtropical forest, the Park keeps over 900 birds from 180 species, the majority being Brazilian birds. One third of these species is considered threatened. Your visit will follow catwalks through native vegetation. They will lead you to several enormous aviaries enriched with cascades, bridges, and vegetation, where we can appreciate the behavior of different species without the interference of netting or screens.
