HISTORY MAKERS! The 2021-2022 Irish Boys Basketball season was truly one for the record books, as Coach Bill O’Malley and Assistant Brendan Lynes (‘10) led the team to the biggest finale possible in high school athletics. It was the first time since 1928 for the Irish to appear in the State Championship game.

The 2022 trip to State also included a new format for the tournament… Which kept the team, and most Irish fans, in Lincoln for an entire week. Coach O’Malley recounts the road to the championship title…

The Irish started the season with a 3-2 record. The 2 losses were to quality teams in Kearney Catholic and Ogallala.

They then put together a 23-game win streak to finish as the D1 State Champs.

They were able to win their 3rd straight Arapahoe Holiday tournament championship, 2nd straight SPVA title, and 3rd straight district title. Four seniors helped lead the team to success: Connor Hasenauer, Jack Heiss, Caleb Munson, and Jack Lin. The team set a record for wins in a season with 26 and Jack Heiss became the school’s all-time scoring leader. Heiss was named the captain of the AllState Teams in both statewide publications and was joined by Brecken Erickson on the 1st team in each.

Caleb Munson and Will Moats garnered honorable mention. Heiss, Erickson, and Munson were also named All-SPVA, with Moats receiving honorable mention.

The coaches and players send a big THANK YOU to all of our St. Pat’s alumni and school patrons who came out to support the Irish in their efforts.

Sportsmanship Award Winners Call it the “and-1” to the Boys Basketball State Championship! The other trophy earned by St. Pat’s in Lincoln recognized exemplary behavior by Irish players, coaches, students, spirit leaders, and fans. The Class D-1 Sportsmanship Award was presented at Pinnacle Bank Arena at the close of the championship game. We are proud of our Irish community!

Winter Sports Recap Lady Irish Basketball Coach Nathan Stienike and the Lady Irish finished their 2021-22 season with a 16-9 record. They won the Arapahoe Holiday Tournament, placed 2nd in the SPVA tournament and ended the season in the subdistrict finals. The Lady Irish were led by three seniors: Jayla Fleck, Jenna Kimberling, and Kate Stienike. Junior Tonja Heirigs, senior Kate Stienike, and junior Mae Siegel were selected for the SPVA All-Conference Team. Overall, Coach Stienike says it was a very successful season with a lot of great memories. It also marks the last season at the helm for Coach, as he ends his 20-year career at the North Platte Catholic Schools. We wish Coach Stienike the very best and thank him for his years of generous service to McDaid and St. Pat’s!

We are excited to announce 2008 grad Kelsie (O’Connor) O’Neill as the new Lady Irish Basketball coach. O’Neill played under the direction of Coach Stienike all four years of her St. Pat’s career, and most recently served as his assistant coach for the 20212022 season. Kelsie is in her 10th year of teaching and currently a 6th grade teacher at McDaid. She says that, “Coach Stienike has left some pretty big shoes to fill. It’s been a blessing to be able to come back to my alma-mater and work with him, and these amazing young women.”

Prior to moving back to North Platte, Kelsie and Sean (’07) lived in Lincoln. In 2014 and 2015 O’Neill coached girls’ basketball at Lincoln Pius X where the Thunderbolts earned both runner-up and championship titles at the Nebraska State Tournament.

Wrestling Coach Kevin Wood had a team of 8 Irish wrestlers this season. They were led by seniors Landon Nichols, Gaven Nutter, and Justin Schroll.

The team finished 6th at the District tournament, with three wrestlers qualifying for the State meet. The State qualifiers were: Logan Dodson (Freshman-195), Gaven Nutter (Senior-138), and Justin Schroll (Senior-182). Both Nutter and Schroll made it to the semifinal round at the State meet.

SAVE THE DATE! The annual G.R.E.E.N. dinner/auction fundraising event is scheduled for October 22, 2022. Please save the date and plan to join us to celebrate 20 years of G.R.E.E.N.! Over those two decades, G.R.E.E.N. has generated over $2 Million dollars in support of the North Platte Catholic Schools. The funds raised at G.R.E.E.N. help the Endowment meet its annual goal for support of the NPCS operating budget, and has previously funded teacher retirement and other school needs. The G.R.E.E.N. Fund-A-Need has also provided the means for many special projects and purchases at McDaid and St. Pat’s. These include a newly renovated school chapel, new school vehicles, a new school bus, gym fans, campus security system, and countless Teacher Wish List items.

We would love your help as we plan the 2022 event! The G.R.E.E.N. committee is always on the lookout for great silent and live auction items. Do you have an item that would be a hot seller?

Vacation rentals, timeshare properties, concert & event tickets, special access to unique experiences…

All of these things can make for great auction packages! Please help us brainstorm, and contact the Endowment office with any of your G.R.E.E.N. ideas!

More campaign projects are nearing completion at St. Pat’s High School! We are excited to show off new restroom facilities (completed in October), new girls locker rooms, and new office spaces for the principal and counselor. All of these projects were made possible by the Endowment’s NOW is the Time campaign, and they represent the Endowment’s ongoing efforts to maintain and improve our school facilities for generations of students to come. Thank you to ALL of our alumni who have supported these, and previous campaign projects!

Phase 3 is next on the campaign agenda… It will include a cafeteria facelift at St. Pat’s and the construction of a new kitchen facility. This will allow for more efficient kitchen operations and will provide additional (and much needed) space for our cooks and equipment. Grant funds have already been utilized to purchase a new food warming station for the kitchen.

Allison Waltman (’15) was inducted into the Phi Alpha Honor Society for Social Work students at the University of Denver. She is currently working toward her Master’s in Social Work.

Colin Pieper ('14), student at UNMC, will begin a residency in Transitional Medicine at Campbell University, Sampson RMC, Clinton, North Carolina.

Nebraska Wesleyan University Dean’s List Genna Blakely (’21) DEGREES Kristina (Bennett ’15) Baxter earned a B.S. in Communications and was a member of the UNK Communications Honor Society, Lambda Pi Eta. th

Kevin O’Connor (‘74) recorded his 725 career win as head coach of the North Platte Community College Knights men’s basketball team.

TJ O’Connor (’02), head coach of the Ft. Calhoun High School boys basketball team, led his team to their first State Tournament appearance in 99 years.

O’Connor and the Ft. Calhoun Pioneers finished 4th at State in Class C1.

Hayley Homan (‘19) was an assistant coach for Hastings Adams Central, who reached the Class B girls’ State basketball semifinals. Hayley was also a member of the Hastings College 2021 Homecoming Court.

December, 2021 I have wonderful memories of our time at St. Pat’s.

("Jim") Schneider thanks all those from the North Platte Catholic Schools community for donations made in his honor to the Endowment. Dad was tremendously proud to send his children to the North Platte Catholic Schools and to work with the Endowment to ensure the sustainability of the schools in the future. The Endowment donations were a fitting tribute to him. We were also very touched by the many expressions of sympathy we received from our classmates and others in North Platte. They made us smile with memories of Dad. Thanks again.

It was quite emotional for me, but brought back many wonderful thoughts and memories of years now past. My precious brother Clint in the memorials, but somehow we failed to get our precious brother Jerry in there. (*Gerald Dorwart is included in this issue).

I’ve included information on him. That leaves me, the last of five. The beautiful thing about it – we all plan to be together for all eternity. Also, my very close friend and classmate Father Bob Chamberlain. The last time I saw him was at Our Lady of the Mountains Church in Estes Park, CO where I was assigned as the

Jason (J.D.) Dorwart (’47) January, 2022 It is always difficult to find the appropriate or suitable words to notify or report the passing of a family member or a good friend. It is with sadness that we relate the death of Norman Kuzel, husband of Ella Mae Clinch, on December 24, 2021. Norm and Ella Mae made their home in Lebanon, CT, after his retirement from the US Navy. A funeral Mass was held for Norm on December 31st. He was a Navy submarine officer during his 25+ years of military service. He is survived by Ella Mae, their 6 children, and many grandchildren. Please accept this donation to the Book of Memories in his name. Ella Mae and his family are in our prayers.

Bob Rea (’53) Fr. Don O’Brien (’53) And the Class of 1953 March, 2022 Thank you so much for the beautiful flower arrangement sent to my mom’s funeral. My parents and I are proud to be alumni and recipients of our education from McDaid and St. Patrick’s. I am consistently overwhelmed by the support shown by many of the friends, classmates, and parents of those I’ve met through my time at St. Patrick’s.
