This issue of NTT What’s On talks to CHOU Man-nung, NTT Artists in Residence. Growing up freely without much limitation, CHOU took eight years to create Taiwan's first unmanned technological media theater—Sin City, and also leave everything behind to wander in Israel. This time, in the highly open and permeable space of the Grand Theater of NTT, CHOU invites the audience to play detectives and find the murderer at the scene of the confusing murder in the immersive work Detective Deduction
The paradox between tradition and innovation has always been the challenge for traditional artists. LI Jing-ye took over the Zhen Yun Lin Ge Puppet Theater when he was less than thirty. LI fused various forms of puppetry into one, and derived new types. He found materials from Journey to the West and Shakespeare's plays, made puppetry in modern costumes, and even invited rock bands to perform live. LI continues to explore new roads for Taiwanese puppet theaters. This feature interview will tell you unseen stories behind.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is the second-longest running Off-Broadway musical. It has been reproduced across the globe and translated into more than 18 languages since its successful premiere in 1996. This classical show is endearingly referred to by its fans as LPC and revolves around the theme of love and relationship.
Featuring an A-list line-up of lead performers, the show presents to you the original English version. The four performers take on the challenge of performing 20 stories and 50 characters. Each scene is romantic, wild and crazy at the same time. It speaks directly to the men and women in the audience and they will laugh, sing along and forget themselves throughout the whimsical journey.

Whimsical adventure combining music, dance, theater, participatory game experiences, Worries of an Animal Doctor is a twist of the famous The Carnival of the Animals by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. As strings, piano and percussion mimic animal behaviors like the roar of a lion, ponderous stamps of an elephant and clumsy crawl of a tortoise with young dancers from the Cloud Gate Dance Studio, both young and adult audience gets to experience changes of the tempo through the gaits and rhythms of animal movements.
HSU Chen-yu will evolve around Maestro HSU Sung-jen and his beloved works of Mozart. In addition, the recital would further feature several important composers of the 20th century: German composer Paul Hindemith with his structural and orderly works; erudite French Olivier Messiaen bringing a flair of fantasy; the works of British Vaughan Williams full of elegant humanity. Portraying the father through music, the HSUs share a glory of commitments to music.
This concert is well depicted the breathtaking views of the mountains and rivers in Formosa. Taiwan Remembrance of Formosa, Sketches of Taiwan and the popular work Gao Shan Qing are all well-described folk customs and dialectal music. With the most optimistic mind, it seems they leave the most magnificent picturesque setting into our hearts.

After an intensive coaching from many prominent musicians, TMAF will perform Beethoven's Triple Concerto and Mahler's Symphony No. 4 under the baton of Maestro Kent Nagano. Hänsel und Gretel is an opera by 19th century Germany composer Engelbert Humperdinck. After the overwhelming success of its premiere, the opera has secured a place in the repertoires of major opera houses for young audience’s “first opera experience.” This summer, NTT presents a brand-new production of Hänsel und Gretel with a modern take. Directed by interdisciplinary artist Ballboss, led by young German-based Taiwanese conductor YANG Suhan and accompanied by a local sinfonietta orchestra, the opera is set in the present day with familiar daily life setting to close the gap between fairytale and modern-day reality. It is a magical adventure of finding one’s way back home.

The concert starts with Russian style, including pieces from Prokovief and Shostakovich. The scene switches to Austrian with the steps of Brahms experiencing the scene among the lake and the literature arts. Last but not the least, Violinist WANG Yu-yin is going to lead the audience to visit the capital city of Austrian with waltz steps and the romance of “Rosenkavalier”.
Conducted by ESO Conductor CHUANG Wen-chen, the concert encompassed different musical styles, from classical to pop music. Crossover soprano Melody YANG, tenor Ezio KONG will join the concert. The program includes opera selections, Taiwanese folk songs, movie scores, etc.

This recital features the flute works of Theobald Boehm, the inventor who improved and perfected the modern Boehm flute. Following the historical timeline of the Boehm flute characterized by a system of levers and rings invented in 1832 and the cylindrical Boehm flute invented in 1847, his compositions for various types of new flutes exactly bring out and interpret the evolution of flute music.

Emerging Violinist Mia WANG is also an author and actress. The program includes Aria con variazioni from Handel, Piazolla's L'histoire du tango arranged for Tuba, and another Concerto for Tuba full of jazz flair and techniques. The outstanding composer LIANG Wan-yun Liang was invited to contribute a new work, Concert Piece No. 1. Euphonium Professor LIN Tzu-hsiang of Taipei National University of the Arts is also invited to collaborate in two trio pieces.

This play illustrates a fantasy world where deities and mortals intermingle in a land of oceanic riches, symbolising the cultural diversity of Taiwan through a performance combining Chinese opera martial arts and dance choreography. Set in a backdrop inspired by seaside Hakka regions from Guanyin and Xinwu districts to the stone weirs of Houlong, paired with curated, culturally specific musical elements for atmosphere, the diversity of this idyllic world comes to life through marine life imagery such as Xian Mountain, the Kuroshio current and Sciaenidae (commonly known as drums or croaker fish). This production is performed by the Rom Shing Hakka Opera Troupe, recipient of the Gold Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music, bringing children and adults alike educational entertainment through lively song and dance.

Part 1: Wind by Choreographer Constantine is a dance work about near and far, presence and absence, connection and separation, going and leaving, loneliness and gathering. Just as the wind leaves its mark on the sand, so does human interaction leave its mark on everyone it encounters. We are propelled by the wind, we are with the wind, we are against the wind, we are the wind.

It is a concert which will combine music, poem and images. Audience can listen to the horn music, hear the poem and watch the different images in every piece. The poems are written by the horn player HUANG Yi-ru, and the images are shoot by HUANG Hsin-wen, both ways try to help audience to listen and get into the atmosphere quickly for all the pieces. This is a concert full of passion, hope and light for the life.
Sandy’s music studio is very excited to present you a special yet fun piano concert. The program will include a wide variety of piano music, such as piano solo, piano duet, piano eight hands, two pianos, and piano chamber music from 19 th to the 20 th centuries.
We would like to bring you not only the joy of the music, but also some humor to the black box. Sandy’s music studio will invite PAN Yu-tien, a xiangsheng performer from the Comedians Workshop as the host. Dance and music have been inseparable. Taiwan’s popular dance music starts from the medley of jazz, Taiwanese opera and nagashi bard music published by the Columbia Records under Japanese rule that sang to modern social dances, and is followed by the emergence of rock and folk music in the later periods. Now just as happened in the West, hip-hop and street dance dominate the scene. Through interdisciplinary collaboration that connects audiences from different backgrounds, ever-changing street dance movements seem to bring out the overlapping lines stretching across different music styles.
A collaboration between director YANG Ching-hsiang and talented playwright Birdy FONG, Love Song: Rhyme for you (Revival) captures the intoxicating bits and pieces of love with nearly one hundred popular love songs of all time. The story tells a mysterious woman who meets a crestfallen playwright who attempts to commit suicide due to his inability to come up with proper rhymes. The two start to take stock of those clichéd but classic romantic stories, a process that reveals their contradictory longing for an extraordinary relationship and the past they refuse to revisit.

This concert is dedicated for Etudes No. 39, published in 1857 by the Romantic composer Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813-1888). The concert that I had last year included his eighth to tenth pieces. This year the remaining pieces will be completed, thus entitled Etude Two. These etudes are just like children's paintings, with unlimited imagination, fantastic color, and endless creativity. This concert inspired from a soprano and educator who was obsessed with caring for animals, HSU Yi-lin, who has adopted various animals during her whole life. She has taught for decades, inherited what she has learned throughout her life, and created an indelible contribution to Taiwan's vocal music education. Tonight, HSU will lead a group of vocalists and also specially invited musicology CHIAO Yuan-pu to guide the profram, looking forward to bringing you a relaxing and satisfying night.
The plot of A Brave Boy Who Saved His Mother is adapted from the myth Baolian Lantern, reinterpreted in the way of combining the cloth bag play and the on-site backstage accompaniment, tailor-made puppet clothes and props, and designs an exclusive soundtrack for each bridge section, arranging various jokes before and during the play, as well as the funny bridge section of various sea and land creatures chasing each other, to the climax of the end of splitting the mountain to save the mother, and then interpreting the motherchild love between Chén Xiāng and Sān Shèng Mǔ with a clear fivetone interpretation of the mother-child love between Chén Xiāng and Sān Shèng Mǔ, how did Chén Xiāng touch her uncle with love and courage and successfully rescue her mother?

Gigoren Music specially invites Chamber CHU, the composer active in both classical and popular music, to contribute a whole new piece of piano trio music. CHU will also play piano in this concert. This concert showcases several contemporary pieces composed by the piano professor, oboe artist and bassoon artist. These compositions were rarely performed and surely will bring to you a fresh and diverse perspective to classical music. It is the mission of Gigoren Music to break the popular stereotype about classical music.
The Middle Town School is a summer program established by the first NTT artist in residence, director-scriptwriter-actor Daniel WANG, to nurture and develop theater talents. Following the first program in 2020, the 2022 program, aims to embed theater knowledge and capability-building in fun games and activities. The program includes three modules: Voice (10:00-13:00), Acting (14:00-17:00) and Directing (18:00-21:00) and expects to enrich a culture of theatrical creation and theater appreciation in the middle region of Taiwan where NTT is located.
Once again, NTT invites the much-acclaimed musical actor, YEH Wen-hao, to kick start the third edition of the musical workshop. In the 2019 workshop, twenty golden-agers recalibrated with YEH, who together with Janis Wang, further wove together life stories of all participants with the musical, The Elephant Project, in the second edition of the workshop. This year, two teachers once again work together to show you how to voice correctly and sing effortlessly in one song. Melody and stories will rekindle your love for musical performances. Through ten training sessions, you will get to better know your voice and body as well as enjoy a different flair of life through performing.

NTT once again invites the experienced musical actor, YEH Wen-hao, to conduct the musical workshop for golden-agers. A selfclaimed “uncle”, YEH has netted numerous fans with his unique charm. The workshop starts from breathing exercises, followed by physical training, vocal training, and them rebuilding and using the connection among breath, body and voice. The workshop aims to provide basic trainings for performers. After learning about the composition and performing style of musicals, equipped with the basics of songs, melody and texts, participants will try to weave together their life stories into a unique performance.

Whiplash is a semi-autobiographical film created by the emerging director Damien Chazelle based on his own personal experiences. The film won the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize for drama in the Sundance Film Festival and was officially screened in the Directors' Fortnight in the Cannes. Featuring the tense relationship between young New York jazz drummer, Andrew, and his relentlessly strict mentor, Fletcher. Starting with breathing exercises, senior actress TSAI Yi-ling helps participants learn to live with their own bodies by discovering self as well as opening senses and awareness in performing games. Through exploring each other’s daily life, participants act out roles in particular scenarios and get to exchange their perceptions of and imagination about life. Under facilitated guidance, participants will together develop the roles and plot.
This workshop aims at people who are interested in performing art. Starting from basic trainings, participants learn to be aware of themselves through breathing exercises, observe the environments, and practice improvisation and monologues in particular scenarios. You will find inspiration from poetry and exercise your imagination and creativity. By releasing an inner self that yearns to perform, this workshop has prepared for you a magical bubble bath that caters to your performing desire.

From Theater to Architecture: Rendering Romance through Light
光之於賴雨農而言，就像以不同面貌遊走於不同材質間的一趟旅程。我們看見光，也瞥見材質，於是心中畫出了空間。 光從心裡出發，帶著我們旅行，最後又回到我們心上，繞成了一趟旅程。本次不藏私講堂賴雨農將從攝影切入，帶領我 們認識光的材質與運用，以及他是如何將光運用在科技媒材領域，於 2022 年高雄燈會中帶給觀眾震撼感受。最後，在 後 LED 時代，我們該如何想像未來光的樣貌。
For Uno LAI, lighting is a journey through multiple materials with diversified roles. We see light, and also materials. A space is thus created in our mind. Starting from the mind, light takes us onto this journey and returns to where it starts. In this lecture, Uno LAI is going to show us the texture and application of light from the perspective of photography. He will talk about how he applied light on new media and amazed the audience in 2022 Taiwan Lantern Festival in Kaohsiung. Eventually, he will share how he, and we, may envision light in the post-LED era.
