WE WOULDN’T CHANGE IT FOR THE WORLD

RORY HUNTER

CEO AND CO-FOUNDER OF THE SONG SAA COLLECTIVE Rory is the brains behind Cambodia’s first private island resort, Song Saa, and have proved that luxury travel can easily go hand-in-hand with thoughtful sustainability. Rory said about his achievement that, “it’s been a tearful, challenging and an incredible ride, but our love for the people, the environment and the vision we have for the future of this community have made every single challenge worthwhile. We wouldn’t change it for the world.” He doesn’t talk about himself much, but he always talk about different ways to achieve sustainability. He truly cares about nature, both living things and the earth itself. Everything matters, from the lifelihood of the community to a piece of branch on the beach. His commitment to preserve the nature is a lifetime of challenges. It’s a never-ending marathon, but at least he knows that his efforts make the difference and it’s moving forward. 56 N OWTRAVELASIA. YOU ONLY NEED A FRESH APPROACH AND SOMETIME OVERLOOK THE ‘USUAL’ WAY.

SUPHAJEE SUTHUMPUN

GROUP CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, DUSIT INTERNATIONAL As the Group Chief Executive Officer of Dusit Thani Co., Ltd., Ms Suphajee Suthumpun is one of the most successful women in Thailand and the world. She was one of very few women to lead an international I.T. company before the age of 40. Her work philosophy is very simple – give everything you do 100%. Her work style is the result of her resilient personality and her experiences in different departments. She has worked in many departments and developed understandings for each field. She takes joy in solving problems instead of drowning bin them. Nothing is unsolvable for Ms. Suphajee – you only need a fresh approach and sometime overlook the ‘usual’ way. It’s like running into a wall – if you tried jumping it 3 times and failed, you might want to run a different way.

Alessandro Frau grew up among colours and flavours of Mediterranean. He then embarked on a culinary journey around the world to hone his sense of scent, taste, and touch before settling down with his own restaurant, ‘Acqua’, the perfect place in which to satisfy personal culinary needs, in an equally attentive context with a modern design. The food are pieces of Alessandro’s reflection. They showcase the detail that he accumulated throughout his life, the beauty that is derived from his dream and passion, and the delicate flavours that can only be crafted with true commitment. These qualities differentiate a good chef from a great chef. Alessandro still maintain his simple, yet strong, personality, and his secret to success are simply ‘Simplicity and passion’.

It’s a tradition to have a “Hotpot” when you are in Sichuan. The bright red soup is filled with chili and 20 other spices to create that unique Sichuan cuisine taste. The distinctive flavour of Sichuan cuisine comes from a unique spice called “Ma La”. The word “Ma” means numb and “La” means spicy, so it’s easy to guess the sensation you would get from the spice. Mala alone can make the tip of your tongue numb, but the actual spice that is responsible for the unique taste is from “Hua Jiao” or Sichuan Pepper which looks similar to black pepper corn. The pepper is used in a variety of dishes and cooked with a diverse ingredient, including surprising ingredients like tripe, goose intestine, and cow wind pipe. A more common dish you might have had before is mapo tofu which is easily found in almost all restaurant in Chengdu.

Face-changing mask performance is probably the most famous show in Chengdu. The performers stunningly change the face of their mask with a blink of an eye. The show has been passed on for generations and the secret of the show is still kept hidden. Only family members are taught this secret of rapid changing of the colourful silk mask. In addition to the mask changing show, other shows are also performed at Shu Feng Ya Yun Sichuan Opera like “The Three Kingdoms” Chinese opera, comedy shows, puppet shows, acrobatic shows, visual effect shows, and dance shows.

Tea appreciation began with the upper classes. Wealthy gentlemen would gather with their scholarly friends to compare rare birds, create poetry and sample fine teas.

We don’t want to leave Dujiangyan district yet because there is another temple that tells the history of Chinese politics and the development of irrigation. Erwang Temple (or Two Kings Temple) is located at the foot of Mount Yulei by Minjiang River, which is a part of the World Heritage Site of Dujiangyan Irrigation System and Mount Qingcheng. The original temple was built in memory of an Li Bing, an ancient king, before it was renamed to Erwang. However, you can still see inscriptions of Li Bing’s wise advices at the Guanlanting Pavilion above the temple complex.

Mount Qingcheng doesn’t just have stunning landscape and intriguing scenic spots, it is also one of the most famous Taoist mountains in China. The evergreen mountain is surrounded by several peaks which appear like fortifications. While scenic spots are scattered around the mountains, the Palaces and Taoist temples are concentrated in a relatively small area at the front of Mount Qingcheng. Among its most important attractions are Tianshi Cave, Jianfugong Temple, Shangqinggong Temple, Yuqinggong Temple, Yuanminggong Temple, Zushi Temple, Laojunge Temple, Chaoyang Cave, and Taian Ancient Town. Taian Ancient Town was an important hub of “Huaping Laoze Road” since ancient times, and it has now become a popular tourist attraction with charming atmosphere of the bygone days as well as many restaurants and hotels for tourists to choose from. 64 N OWTRAVELASIA. onaco maybe small, but its population density is one of the highest in the world. Nonetheless, the city is surprisingly serene with highly organized roads and beautiful homes facing the Mediterranean. Its art and culture have a distinctive blend of Italian and French influences, like colourful architectures in vibrant palette to pastel hues. It can be arguably said that the quality of life in Monaco is well above average and crime rate is extremely low.

GETTING AROUND

Even though the whole city state is approximately 202 hectares, the landscape isn’t so forgiving for the knees. The roads cuts along the hilly coast, so if you aren’t a tri-athlete, we suggest you get a day pass for the bus (1 Day Pass costs 5.5 EUR). Another tip when planning your Monaco trip is ‘don’t look for Monaco international airport’ because it does not exist. The closest airport is 22 km away in Nice, and most millionaires would just take a helicopter if they want to travel to other city nearby.

BASIC FACT Many are confused between Monaco and Monte Carlo. Monaco is a country or a city state while Monte Carlo is a part of Monaco. Monaco-ville is the oldest part of the city, and also known as Le Rocher or The Rock. On the other hand, Frontvieille is the new area developed to combat the chronic land shortage in the extremely densely populated principality.

Besides world-class events, Monaco is the paradise for shoppers with deep pocket. You’ll easily find ultra-luxury brands virtually on every corner. It is best to visit Monaco between May and June as the weather is mild and warm. July and August may be the busiest time in Monaco but it could get too hot, while October and November come with rain and December to January could be too cold to enjoy the outdoor and the Mediterranean.
