Introduction The American version of Halloween originates from the Celtic celebration of Samhain (pronounced sow – in) which is a Druidic festival devised to celebrate the end of the harvest. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes – typically consisting of animal heads and skins – and they tried to tell each other’s fortunes. They would build huge sacred bonfires where people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices and offerings to their Celtic deities. When the celebration was over, they re-lit the fires in their hearths which they had put out earlier that evening. The fires would be re-lit with flame from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.
