Dumping a latent crisis

The discovery of medical waste at the Heuningspruit N1 off-ramp just outside Kroonstad has raised serious concerns about the illegal dumping of this type of waste in the Fezile Dabi district
“This act is not only a serious environmental offence, but also a direct violation of national health legislation and waste management regulations,” confirms Carina Serfontein, member of the mayoral committee tasked
with environmental health and emergency services in the Fezile Dabi Municipality
The medical waste that was found at the off-ramp last week has since been safely removed and secured in a designated containment facility in order to prevent any potential risk to public health or the environment
A thorough investigation is underway to trace the origin of the waste and identify those responsible for this reckless and unlawful act
The illegal disposal of medical waste is a criminal offence under the National Health Act
and associated environmental legislation
The authorities have stated they would not hesitate to take appropriate legal action against offenders once they are identified
Serfontein urges all healthcare providers and waste generators to comply strictly with waste disposal regulations to safeguard the health of communities and the environment
The public, in turn, is encouraged to report any suspicious dumping activities to the Municipal Health Services, also known as the Environmental Health unit
Police officers stand accused
Two members of the SAPS were arrested by the provincial Anti-Corruption unit in connection with an incident that took place in Harrismith, in March this year
Motlalepula Johannes Hadebe and Fanyane Christian Mtimkulu, both 44 years old, were arrested on corruption charges on 12 June
They appeared in the Harrismith Magistrates’ Court on 13 June for a bail application This was then postponed to Tuesday, 24 June
Both suspects, of the Bethlehem Public Order Policing (POP) unit, are currently in custody
The arrests stem from an in-
cident reported in Harrismith, on 5 March this year, when the two police officers visited a liquor store in town and falsely presented themselves as officials from Bloemfontein, claiming they were conducting an inspection to verify the authenticity of the liquor being sold
After completing their so-called inspection, they threatened the business owner with arrest and demanded a R5 000 bribe The complainant indicated she only had R2 500, which the two officers accepted before leaving
The complainant opened a case and it was handed to the provincial Anti-Corruption
Task Team for investigation
After completion of the investigation, the Director of Public Prosecutions gave clear instructions to arrest and charge the two police officers
“If those involved are from within our own ranks, we will not hesitate to take decisive action,” stated Lt Gen Baile Motswenyane, Free State police commissioner
“No one is above the law, and we remain committed to ensuring accountability and upholding the integrity of the SAPS”
Mtimkulu also appeared in the Bethlehem Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 23 June, for another unrelated case

Van Wyk's journey in medicine began when he matriculated from the Kroonstad High School in 2001
He studied medicine at the University of the Free State (UFS) graduating with his MBChB degree in 2006 After completing his internship at the Tygerberg Hospital, he has dedicated his career to providing exceptional eyecare to his patients
His journey in the field of ophthalmology began when he moved to Kimberley in 2009 to complete his community service years He soon landed a medical officer post at the ophthalmology clinic in Kimberley in 2010 applying his skills and knowledge to make a real difference in people's lives
