Ter viering van Vrouemaand het VrystaatKroon met verskeie vroue oor hul onderskeie rolle in die samelewing gesels In die afgelope 30 jaar het Petro Oosthuizen ’n onbaatsugtige diens aan die Kroonstad-gemeenskap gelewer en hoop gebring vir dié wat met gehoorprobleme skukkel
Die 63-jarige Oosthuizen, wat die afgelope 41 jaar as spraakterapeut en oudioloog werk, het drie dekades gelede die Kroonstad Gehoorsentrum begin Sy het besluit om hierdie jaar die tuig amptelik neer te lê
“Ons gaan volgende jaar in die Bosveld aftree, en daarom sal my laaste werksdag op Woensdag 15 Oktober wees Zelda Wolmarans sal dan die praktyk by my oorneem, ” sê sy Oosthuizen, die jongste van agt kinders, het in 1979 aan die Hoërskool Menlopark matrikuleer Ná skool het sy aan die Universiteit van Pretoria (UP) ’ n graad in kommunikasie-patologie verwerf In 1983 het sy as spraakterapeut en oudioloog gekwalifiseer
Sy het haar loopbaan aan die Elizabeth Conradie-skool in Kimberley begin, waarna sy by die Prospectus Novus-skool in Pretoria gewerk het Toe sy en haar man, Wessel Oosthuizen, wat by John Deere SA gewerk het en met wie sy 40 jaar getroud is, na Kroonstad verhuis, het sy by die kinderleidingkliniek hier begin Daarna het sy haar praktyk in Kroonstad geopen
Oosthuizen sê haar werk is haar ingebore passie Dit het haar groot vreugde verskaf as sy mense weer kon bemagtig met gehoor wat hulle verloor het
“Om mense te kon help om weer te kan hoor sodat hulle aan ’ n gesprek kan deelneem of kan kommunikeer nadat hulle spraak en taal weens ’ n beroerte verloor het, is regtig ’ n wonderlike en vervullende ervaring”
Oosthuizen sê omdat sy altyd in die mediese rigting wou werk, maar ook genoeg tyd aan haar gesin en tydverdrywe wou gee, was dit vir haar

Sy reken om as vrou die balans te hou is deesdae baie makliker as toe haar kinders nog almal op skool was

Sy sê dit is vir haar ’ n baie emosionele tyd, maar sy is ook opgewonde om die nuwe hoofstuk in hul lewe te begin

Four police officers of the Clarens Police Station demonstrated extraordinary commitment to public safety by pursuing a dangerous attempted rape suspect through challenging mountain terrain and finally arresting the suspect
Sgts Lebohang Nhlapo and Thabo Makume, along with Consts Lehlohonolo Rampai and Serame Lesenyeho, launched an intensive search operation to successfully track and apprehend the 37-year-old undocumented suspect in the mountains at Clarens
The suspect, a former shepherd, was positively identified as the perpetrator of an attempted sexual assault against a 46-year-old woman on Sunday, 17 August According to the detailed police report, the incident occurred at approximately 08:30 when the victim went jogging and was suddenly attacked by the suspect
During the encounter, the suspect attempted to force the woman to the ground and remove her clothing The victim fought back aggressively, managing to scratch the attacker's face and poke his eye, which ultimately enabled her to escape She was subsequently assisted by a passing motorist who helped her report the incident at the Clarens Police Station
Following an extensive search, the suspect was arrested and formally charged with attempted rape He was scheduled to appear before the Bethlehem Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 22 August The Bethlehem Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit is currently conducting a comprehensive investigation
The police strongly advise community members, particularly those who enjoy outdoor activities like jogging, to prioritise personal safety by exercising in groups whenever possible

The police in Clocolan arrested a 35-year-old foreign national on serious firearms and immigration-related charges
On Saturday, 23 August, at 22:15, the police responded to a community tip-off regarding an unknown individual on a farm in the Clocolan district with an unauthorised weapon
On their arrival, the police discovered the suspect with a shotgun of which the serial numbers were removed The suspect was unable to provide legitimate documentation such as a passport or work permit and was arrested on the spot He faces charges of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and entering the country illegally
The suspect will soon appear in the Clocolan Magistrates’ Court The police encourage the public to always report any suspicious persons

Empowered voices an inspiring movement
Elaine van Eeden pre-breeding project lead at Syngenta in Bethlehem, was recently announced as the 2025 winner of the Womens Voice Competition at a gala event in Johannesburg Van Eedens passion for wheat breeding and finding solutions to address the seasonal challenges farmers have to cope with made her the clear winner in this years event
The Women’s Voice Competition highlights the remarkable achievements and aspirations of women making a difference in the practice of agriculture and rural communities This year attracted some truly inspiring entries from across the country each reflecting a story of resilience, leadership, and innovation in the sector
According to Magda du Toit director of Future Agri Perspectives, this initiative was launched in 2024 to amplify the voices of women in agriculture and to honour the vital contributions they make to the sector
The five finalists in the competition were Alani Janeke (communicator), Elaine van Eeden (breeder and researcher) Heleen Viljoen (agricultural economist), Prudence Thulisile Mokwena (farmer and founder of RBKM Chickens) and Sarah Malatjie (project administrator) Viljoen won second place and Janeke third place
“After reviewing the entries, it is unfortunate that only five finalists could be selected
All the women who participated, whether it was in a professional, leadership or technical role are winners for their contributions to agriculture The entries highlighted the
sector’s vast possibilities and emphasised the meaningful role women play in the agricultural sector I feel that each of the woman showed courage to enter and is therefore already a winner By participating, she has contributed towards her own personal development Congratulations to all of them ” Du Toit said
During the event, the finalists had one last opportunity to impress the judges by sharing more insight into the topics they chose and how it impacted on their lives careers in agriculture, and in their communities or the environment Van Eeden dedicated her victory to every woman working tirelessly – often behind the scenes – to ensure the sectors sustainability and progress, but especially to the team working with her on the research farm in the greenhouse She has been working in wheat breeding and research for the past 28 years residing and mainly working in the Bethlehem region According to her wheat is a beautiful crop
Her work focuses on finding new material that will benefit farmers while also ensuring that the varieties conform to the standards and needs of the milling and baking industries Du Toit urged women in the sector to continue championing diversity in agriculture, emphasising that every story shared, every barrier broken, and every innovation fostered contributes to a brighter more inclusive agricultural sector for all
