The intensive police campaign against illegal mining, Operation Vala uMgodi, is gaining momentum, with 28 men arrested on charges ranging from dealing in drugs, illegal firearms and ammunition, to illicit mining and illegal immigration during a three-day operation.
On Monday, 17 March, the operation’s combat team of operators, including the Mission Area Joint Operational Center (MAJOC) roving team, executed disruptive actions in Lusaka near Theunissen
The police then arrested a 32-yearold man in possession of seven sealed plastic bags of crystal meth, three bags of full Mandrax tablets, one half and one-quarter Mandrax tablets, and cash believed to be the proceeds of a drugs sale The man was arrested for dealing in drugs
Illicit mining disruptive policing actions continued in Thabong Extension 4, G-Hostel The police uncovered gold processing equipment hidden under the ground Operators dug out two 9 kg gas bottles and two 14 kg oxygen cylinders On Sunday, 16 March, the MAJOC team, combat operators, proactive members and other role players of Operation Vala uMgodi executed various illicit mining disruptive policing actions in different identified hotspot areas
Foot and vehicle patrols, air-toground drone patrols, and vehicle checkpoints were conducted in the Stone and Allied area, Bambanani SS1 Slam Dam, Kudu Mine Shaft, Stilte Farm, and G-Hostel in Thabong Extension 4
During the operation, 12 suspected illegal miners were caught in the act Gold-bearing material weighing at 132 52 kg and gold processing equipment such as lephenduka, steel balls, garden spades, shovels, pick axes, steel plates, buckets and washing basins were seized
The police also arrested suspects aged between 26 and 40 years, and case dockets of possession of suspected gold-bearing material, gold processing equipment with additional charges of trespassing on mine area and Contravention of the Immigration Act were opened at the Thabong, Theunissen and Welkom Police Stations
On Friday, 14 March, the operational team received intelligence about a man known as “Max” who was allegedly in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition
“The operators arrived at the identified target house in Meloding near Virginia, searched it and found a Black Norinco 9mm calibre together with a magazine loaded with six round of live ammunition The 52-year-old man was immediately arrested, and a case of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition was opened at the Meloding Police Station,” says Lt Col
Thabo Covane, police spokesperson for the Free State Vigilant operators on Friday, 7 March, noticed bubbles coming from beneath stagnant sewerage water at G-Hostel Upon investigation, they discovered new ways of hiding gold processing equipment They discovered hose pipes submerged inside dirty water Members started digging up the sewerage to investigate the source of the bubbles, says Covane
During the digging they found two nozzles, four red and blue pipes, two green 9kg gas bottles, and two black 14kg oxygen gas cylinders

Three men appeared in the Welkom Magistrate's Court on a charge of murder and robbery with aggravated circumstances that happened in the city in 2022
The accused, Sulakhe Lindelani Mthembu (24) and Elias Custadio Sithole (32) Elijar Sithole Mzondi (39) appeared before the Welkom Magistrates' Court on 12 March
The Hawks' Serious Organized Crime Investigation Unit in Welkom arrested the 39-year-old Zimbabwean national Mzondi who is in South Africa illegally, on 28 January 2025 in Tembisa, Gauteng
The other two accused Mthembu and Sithole were traced then served with summons on 5 March to appear in court on 12 March

A trio, one of whom is an illegal, appeared in the Welkom Magistrate's Court on a charge of murder and robbery with aggravated circumstances
One of the victims was fatally shot as he was coming from the site walking towards the warehouse
A case of murder and robbery was registered then referred to the Welkom Hawks Serious Organized Crime Investigation Unit
The court postponed the matter against the three accused to 19 March for formal bail application

In March 2025, the Matjhabeng Municipality launched the first phase of its Business Visitations Programme in Welkom The primary aim of this initiative is to start engaging businesses to establish partnerships and address service delivery and investment challenges in the area
Ten companies were visited by the acting executive mayor, Cllr Hlobohang Mokhomo, and a high-powered delegation
On 6 and 7 March, the Matjhabeng Local Municipality hosted its Strategic Planning Session, during which the six key municipal strategic priorities for 2025 were highlighted
The priorities identified are economic development, sustainability and environmental stewardship, good governance, engagement, and partnership, developing community capacity, public safety and emergency preparedness and financial viability
“To effectively achieve this, we recognize the importance of not only the municipality’s officials and the community but also the active participation and support of local businesses with established roots in the Matjhabeng area As such, we have initiated a programme of business visitations during March and April,” says Mokhomo

The visits took place during the Life Orientation periods at the Nanabolela Secondary School in Thabong, and the Ikemisetseng Mine School in St Helena

The visits were planned by the TACJOC commander, Col Nontando Ndzotyana, and the team
The team first visited Nanabolela where the Pillar Approach Policing Blueprint was followed to educate the learners and conduct recruitment by presenting the poloice as the employer of choice Various police components and units presented their expertise to the learners
Corporate Communication and Liaison was represented by classes
of Gr 9 to Gr 11 Covane says the learners put together research based on impact analysis regarding illicit mining The learner stated that illicit mining is a major drain on the economy It is a crisis that fuels crime, endangers lives, and undermines the progress of the nation
“The learners pointed out that illegal mining is not just about a few desperate individuals digging for survival It has evolved into a well-organised criminal enterprise controlled by ruthless syndicates The consequences are felt by communities who suffer from pollution and degradation of environments,” said Covane Learners also spoke about Operation Vala uMgodi and said that it is the duty of law enforcement to protect communities and the economy from criminal activities The police,
together with other roleplayers in the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure [NATJOINTS] and stakeholders in the mining industry must take responsibility for addressing illicit mining
Lastly, one of the learners presented a different point of view on the topic that for decades, South Africa was known for its riches in minerals and precious metal exports Mining operations shut down in droves from 2005 to date This resulted in a high rate of unemployment, and many households lost the means to survive The second phase of this community outreach at Ikemisetseng had the Operation Vala uMgodi team arrive at the school, bearing gifts Members deployed to combat illicit mining in the Free State put together much-needed items like shoes for the learners
