An underrated and acknowledged animal welfare society in Welkom, 4 Feral Rescue, helps approximately 300 feral cats and kittens every month
Anna van der Walt, one of the directors, says that to maintain and upkeep this, they need approximately 150kg of food per month
“We practice humane, controlled, and safe methods of managing the feral cats, and we have already established various controlled colonies,” says Van der Walt
“We, however, require the support of the public and local businesses to establish and care for more of these colonies”
The organisation was established in 2021 when its founders became conscious of the increasing numbers in feral cats, kittens, and colonies in and around the Welkom area
Van der Walt says they aim to establish controlled and healthy feral cat colonies, whilst controlling the increasing population of feral cats
“We run various projects and operations, working independently from other animal welfare organisations in and around Welkom Apart from the maintenance and upkeep of the feral colonies, 4 Feral Rescue provides
food, medical care, and shelter to feral
colonies We also attempt to curb the increasing population of feral cats via our Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) projects,” she says
Ferel rescue TNR projects focus on stabilising feral cat colonies by trapping, sterilising, and returning them to their original location This helps control the population growth of feral cats and improves their well-being
This is considered a humane and efficient way to manage community cat populations, especially for those not suitable for adoption or rehoming
Van der Walt says, through medical interventions, they want to decrease the risk of unwanted diseases, like feline leukaemia virus (FeLV), feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), and feline rabies
They also want to reduce the impact of feral cats on wildlife, and to limit

The Welkom police have arrested a 39-year-old man following reports of the alleged rape of his two daughters, now aged 16 and 20 years
On 24 April, off-duty members of the Welkom Public Order Policing (POP) received information on the whereabouts of an alleged rapist and the vehicle he was driving
The members then traced and apprehended the suspect who was parked outside a house in Welkom
“It is alleged that since 2019,
the suspect would threaten the two victims, who were aged 10 and 14 at the time, with a firearm before engaging in continuous sexual acts with them
“The matter was recently reported to the police after one of the victims shared details of the ordeal with her mother in Winburg,” says Sgt Palesa Thabana, police spokesperson in Lejweleputswa

Foundation Easter soccer and netball tournament that was held in Kutlwanong, was a major success
It took place between 18 and 21 April, at the Rearabetswe Sports Ground in Kutlwanong, with 24 soccer teams and four netball teams vying for top honours
Tshepo Khoabane, founder member, says the event brought together teams from various organisations and communities promoting sport development, team work, and community engagement
Exciting matches were played, with Royal Eagles emerging as the soccer champions and the Rearabetswe team winning the netball tournament
The event fostered community spirit with spectators and supporters cheering on their favourite teams

Since he started this initiative in 2019, Khoabane has gone on to present 11 successful sporting events
In June they will be hosting a schools tournament at Allanridge School, in Nyakallong, in Odendaalsrus and in Kutlwanong
