The relentless efforts of the multi-disciplinary task team Vala Umgodi continues to yield significant results in the Free State, with 30 suspects arrested over the past weekend.
These arrests underscore the ongoing commitment to eradicating illicit mining activities in the mining towns of Lejweleputswa

Between 6 and 8 June the suspects, aged between 21 and 45 years, were apprehended during a series of disruptive operations that also led to the confiscation of gold-bearing material and illicit mining equipment Undocumented individuals were among those arrested after being found in Meloding
In a separate, but related, incident, members of the Vala Umgodi Tactical Response team were deployed to a volatile taxi dispute in Vierfontein Their swift presence effectively normalised the situation, preventing it from escalating out
of control Vehicle checkpoints and stop-andsearch operations were also conducted in the area
“Members intercepted and confiscated approximately 397kg of instant porridge, intended for zama zamas (illegal miners) underground This significant seizure prevented the supplies from reaching their intended destination,” says Sgt Mahlomola Kareli, spokesperson for the Free State police
The operation also saw the arrest of 13 more suspects for being illegal immigrants, found near a hostel in Thabong
“The robust partnership between the SAPS and private security companies continues to
thrive in combating illicit mining
“This collaboration led to the arrest of eight suspects, with the subsequent seizure of gold-bearing material and equipment including steel balls, washing basins, self-made trolleys, and phendukas,” says Kareli
Finally, three more suspects were arrested after voluntarily surfacing from underground at a mine near Theunissen
“These ongoing successes demonstrate the team’s unwavering resolve to disrupt and dismantle illegal mining operations and the associated criminal networks that plague our communities
“Operations continue,” he says
The community of ward 30 is up in arms over lack of patrol vehicles at the understaffed and under-resourced Thabong Police Station.
So says Patrick Mholo, chairperson of the ward 30 Neighborhood Watch Committee, that represents over 300 members
He says it is shocking to hear that there are only two patrol vehicles assigned to Customer Service Centre (CSC) for the whole of Thabong
“When the community or victims of crime, in particular of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), approach the police station, they see scores of vehicles parked outside and marked as Station Commander, Illicit Mining, Logistics, Human Resources, Support Services, Social Crime, Provincial Office, Training College, and so on, ” he says
“When entering the CSC to report a crime, we are told by police members that there are no vehicles”
Mholo says ordinary officers and detectives sometimes have to use their private cellphones to take photographs of crime scenes and perpetrators, raising concern about evidence integrity
On 23 May the minister of police, Senzo Mchunu, released crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2024-’25 financial year The report showed that the Thabong Police Station recorded a 9,6% decrease in contact crime The report further shows that the Free State contributed only a national increase of 6,4%
“But the real experiences of victims of crimes like GBVF tell a different story There is nothing to celebrate about these statistics”
He says the community demands that the national minister or MEC of Police capacitate the Thabong CSC to assist victims of crime

The Matjhabeng Local Municipality is intensifying its Operation Patala campaign as part of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen revenue collection and enhance service delivery across all communities
On 13 May, executive mayor Thanduxolo Khalipha and members of the mayoral committee (MMCs), councillors, and senior management resolved to implement bold and targeted interventions aimed at improving the municipality’s financial position
This will ensure the long-term sustainability of essential services for both residents and businesses
As part of this renewed approach, cut-off notices will be issued to households, businesses, and institutions with outstanding municipal accounts
The municipality will move decisively to disconnect services to defaulting customer, including tuck shops, commercial properties, and other entities that continue to withhold payment despite having the means to pay
A special focus will be placed on employed residents in townships, as well as government and private sector employees, and operators in both the formal and informal economy who are failing to meet their municipal obligations
To lead by example, all councillors and municipal employees have been urged to ensure that their municipal accounts are fully paid by 1 July Similarly, tenants in municipal rental stock will be expected to settle their rent in full
The municipality is also engaging church leaders, school principals, and school governing bodies (SGBs) to address outstanding debts from religious and educational institutions
Formal notices will be sent to government departments, with a clear directive to settle all outstanding accounts by end of June The municipality will further approach the National Treasury for both technical and financial assistance to strengthen its revenue enhancement strategies

A planned fire drill was successfully conducted on 24 May at the Huis Ougoud home in St Helena
The exercise was designed to test emergency response times, enhance coordination among emergency medical services (EMS), and ensure the safety and preparedness of the home’s senior residents
The fire alarm was activated at 13:55 and, in response, the Matjhabeng Fire Department and Hazquip team were alerted Participating security companies were also notified,
A learner of the Aurora Primary School,Oratilwe Moletsane,is also a member of the Dance Alive Studio She has done exceptionally well at the Dance Talent and Modelling Association’s (DTMA) provincial level championship, and is busy preparing to represent the Free State at the national competition This will take place from 18 to 21 September at the Emperors Palace Theatre of Marcellus in Johannesburg The DTMA is developed for dancers to obtain regional and national colours, and includes an exam syllabus Photo: Supplied
and Dirk Kotze, Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairman, was also informed He, in turn, coordinated further any response Elizabeth Nunes, of the CPF, says the EMS chaplaincy trauma support team, led by Gavin Hoole, was on-site to provide trauma support, and staff of the Huis OuGoud quickly deployed with fire extinguishers and first aid kits, working in coordination with the firefighting teams “The Matjhabeng Fire Department arrived within minutes, followed closely by active support from neighbourhood watch members To simulate
an emergency, a controlled fire was ignited on tyres in a secure area, well away from residents This allowed members to practise using fire extinguishers and gain experience handling the fire hose from the Matjhabeng Fire Department,” says Nunes The drill lasted 38 minutes and concluded with a debriefing session involving Huis Ou Goud board members and first responders Kotze encourages all senior citizens and homecare facilities to participate in similar preparedness activities to ensure the continued safety of all residents

“My grootste wens is dat ’ n 90-jarige sal inskryf!
