The residents of Naudeville, Welkom, can now sleep peacefully after the installation of 13 new closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to improve security and help with crime prevention.
This initiative, driven by the Community Policing Forum (CPF) Sector 3, in partnership with the Welkom police, aims to strengthen law enforcement capabilities and improve community safety.
The newly installed surveillance system will help monitor key areas, deter criminal
activities and provide valuable evidence for investigations, which is an important step in fighting crime in the area.
The project is a step forward in strengthening security in Naudeville, with plans to extend coverage to the Welkom CBD and other neighbourhoods in the near future.
Brig. Disebo Cezula praised the CPF’s collaboration with the Welkom police and expressed gratitude to residents who have private CCTV cameras, which play a crucial role in assisting law enforcement with crime prevention.
“The Welkom police remain committed to promoting strong
partnerships with the community to create a safer living environment for everyone,” she said.
Dirk Kotze, CPF chairman of Welkom, congratulated sector 3 on this achievement and emphasised the positive impact of collective responsibility to ensure a safer environment.
The launch of the CCTV project on 29 January was attended by sector 3 committee members including Bonny Alfirs, Michael Harcombe, Alno Crous, Basil Gillfillen and Capt. Andries Coetzee, who is a police sector representative – all instrumental in making this initiative a success.

An illegal dumper was fined R2 000 and his vehicle impounded after he was caught dumping refuse near Lakeview Pan, Bedelia.
The swift response from the neighbourhood watch and Matjhabeng bylaws enforcement team on Sunday, 2 February, ensured that the illegal dumper was immediately brought to book.
Reports surfaced on neighbourhood watch groups regarding illegal dumping activity in progress near the pan in Long Road.
“Members of the neighbourhood watch promptly responded and went to the scene, where they spotted the vehicle leaving the area. They
followed the vehicle to the town centre and requested the owner to return and remove the refuse he had dumped.
“The individual refused to comply, prompting the patrol members to contact the Community Policing Forum (CPF) control room for bylaws enforcement assistance,” says a spokesperson for the neighbourhood watch. Following an intervention, the vehicle owner returned to the site.
“The offender was issued a fine of R2 000, and the vehicle was impounded.
“The owner is required to settle the fine to reclaim the vehicle. Failure to do so will result in an additional storage fee of R150 per day until the fine is paid in full.”

An up-and-coming, 20-yearold artiste from Meloding, Virginia, has been invited to the International Modelling and Talent Association (IMTA) convention in New York, America, taking place between 5 and 12 July.
In September 2024, Katleho Emmanuel (Emmy) Moleko had the incredible opportunity to perform at the annual International Arts and Talent Showcase (IATS).
“This is a platform designed to give African artists a chance to showcase their talents to international agents and managers.
“It was at this showcase that I received a callback invitation to attend the prestigious IMTA convention,” says Moleko.
An excited Moleko says this is the perfect opportunity to elevate his career.
“I am eager to meet industry professionals, expand my network and, most importantly, showcase my talents on an international stage. I am also aiming to grow in our local and national industry,” says Moleko.
From a young age, this young man has been drawn to the arts.
“I started with singing, and over time, I discovered my love for acting.
“I also began modelling,
which has become an important part of my artistic journey,” he says.
Moleko attended and matriculated at the Hoërskool Hentie Cilliers in 2022.
“I am currently a first-year student at the North-West University (NWU).
“My training includes singing and vocal lessons at the Goudveld-Hoërskool, as well as
acting classes through my agency and also privately,” Moleko explains.

Worse off than before
Concerned resident, Welkom:
The Matjhabeng Local Municipality has, under the political and administrative leadership of its executive mayor, Thanduxolo Khalipha, and municipal manager, Adv Lonwabo Ngoqo, thus far lost all the cases against the municipality.
To date, the municipality has spent over R150 million of taxpayers’ money, excluding the sheriff costs. This is despite the internal legal advice and council objection to pursue cases where there were no prospects of success.
The decisions of Khalipha and Ngoqo have left residents without service delivery, no water, and swimming in raw sewage.
Refuse collection is sporadic and
street lights are not working. The streets are riddled with potholes. Will they be held accountable for their actions?
Can the citizens institute a class action lawsuit against the two for wasting ratepayers’ money?
The sooner we make those entrusted with authority to run our institutions pay for robbing the electorates, the better. It cannot be a return to business as usual.

The national minister of Sports, Arts and Recreation, Gayton McKenzie, has vowed to produce black world-class swimmers.
South Africa has been doing well in the transformation of football, rugby, cricket, and in field and track athletics. All these sports fraternities are a true reflection of the Rainbow Nation that South Africa is.
Black and white sportsmen have been competing together at the highest level globally.
swimmer, Tatjana Smith, has won gold and silver in the Olympics. Chad le Clos is also one of the best swimmers ever produced by this country. To produce more swimmers and create employment, McKenzie says he has already engaged athletic and Olympic federations to address his concerns.
But the same, however, cannot be said about swimming.
Black people have been dragging behind due to lack of basic facilities at school and township level.

McKenzie is the co-founder of the Patriotic Front (PA), established in 2013, and was subsequently appointed as the minister of Sports by the president, Cyril Ramaphosa, after the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU) after the outcome of the elections held in May 2024.
McKenzie, former convicted criminal, a God-gifted motivational speaker, and author, should be given a chance.

The Morning Star Children’s Centre in Welkom celebrated a 25-year milestone in January.
To celebrate its establishment in 2000, a special thanksgiving ceremony was held on 24 January, the day on which Morning Star opened its doors to admit its first eight children, all born and suffering the symptoms of HIV/Aids.
“For the first few years, Morning Star was more like a hospice, looking after children who were dying from the disease. Despite the losses, with up to 30 children dying per annum, we noted with true amazement that 70% of them could be rehabilitated, purely as a result of good nutrition.
“In fact, two of those children admitted on the very first day are still alive today,” says Joan Adams, founder and ambassador of the centre.
Over the intervening years, hundreds of children have been cared for, many have been saved from dying, countless family members helped and supported, and the Gospel shared on numerous occasions. All-in-all, Morning Star has 580 children on its register, ranging in age from two to 20 years and older. Adams says 120 of the youngest ones attend the centre on a daily basis.
“Most of them are affected by HIV, rather than infected with it themselves.”
Morning Star boasts 40
staff members, with Adams and two of the initial staff members, Merriam Moreboli and Joyce Monyane, still on the payroll.
“The most vulnerable group of children these days are our teenagers and young adults, the very ones we saved from certain death in our early years.
“Three youth care workers have been appointed to befriend, counsel and share the Gospel with them, and point them to Christ. Morning Star is unashamedly a Christian organisation, and our greatest desire is to see our children and young adults turning to Christ and finding eternal hope in Him,” says Adams.
“Our thanksgiving service was wonderful. In addition to Joshua Bolaji, our board chairman, sharing from God’s Word, we also offered our gratitude to God in song, prayers, and testimonies to His faithfulness over a quarter of a century. The service was concluded by singing the beautiful hymn, ‘Great is Thy faithfulness,’ the words of which say it all,” she says.
Afterwards, the staff were given a commemorative mug, and a delicious lunch was served. There was also a jumping castle, ice-cream, cake, and balloons for the children.
“God’s goodness and grace are overwhelming when we reflect on all that has happened over the past 25 years. We marvel at how He is able to use broken and sinful people like us to do His work,” says Adams.
