The proposed ward boundary changes in ward 3 of Matjhabeng have been met with strong opposition and objection. If successful, it will affect more than 1 000 voters
Ward councillor Maxie Badenhorst has launched a petition to strongly oppose the Municipal Demarcation Board’s (MDB) draft proposal to relocate the Hennenman Hoërskool voting district – affecting approximately 1 022 voters – from ward 3 to ward 4, which stretches a distance of nearly 30 km
“This adjustment would link Hen-
nenman voters to areas like Meloding (Virginia) and surrounding farms, despite significant geographical, social and economic differences, ” says Badenhorst
She says the MDB justifies the move as a means of reducing ward 3’s voter count from 7 063 to within the 6 360 limit
“However, the proposal, primarily shaped by an ANC-aligned municipal committee, lacked proper consultation with affected communities in Hennenman and Phomolong, raising concerns about political motivation,” says Badenhorst

Municipality told to make amends

The Matjhabeng Local Municipality, together with the acting municipal manager, Thabo Panyani, was found guilty of contempt of court and fined R250 000
The sewage spill in Nashua Welkom has been the subject of court proceedings dating back to 2021
In September 2022, the then municipal manager, Zingisa Tindleni, was ordered to take all necessary steps to ensure full and timely compliance with the Free State High Court's ruling, which forces the municipality to repair the sewage system and provide monthly updates to Nashua Welkom's lawyers until the repairs are completed
The municipality was also ordered to take all necessary steps and ensure that temporary mobile pumps, which regulate the flow of sewage within the
interim installed pumps, are kept in place
In addition, the municipality was directed to take all precautionary measures to avoid any possible contamination or associated problems with the sewer lines or infrastructure and the proper and effective flow thereof until the final date of resolution of the matter as ordered
However, the company has now approached the High Court, arguing that the municipality failed to comply with the order
Acting judge Suzanne Boonzaaier agreed last Thursday, June 5
“In the circumstances, intent can be inferred, which places a burden of proof on the respondents (the municipality and Panyani) to raise a reasonable doubt as to whether their non-compliance was intentional or in bad faith,” she found
Nashua Welkom wanted Panyani to be sentenced to six months in prison, or as the court may deem fit and on

The judge, however, ruled that previous court orders were issued when different officials held office in the local municipality
“In my opinion, it would be inappropriate to attribute that responsibility to the current acting official in his personal capacity, especially given the temporary nature of his position,”
She was not convinced, however, that the municipality and Panyani had made all reasonable efforts to comply with the court order, as the problem continues, and its impact is still being felt not only by Nashua Welkom, but also by the general public
The judge then declared Matjhabeng and Panyani in contempt of court for failing to comply with three orders and ordered them to pay a fine of R250 000 to Nashua Welkom

Cllr René Steyn has launched the petition in the wake of the ever-increasing deterioration of roads across ward 32, which have reached a breaking point
The petition calls on the municipality to take immediate and sustained action to repair potholes and address the dangerous lack of road signage at key intersections
The petition comes in response to daily complaints from motorists, business owners, and pedestrians whose safety is compromised by crumbling infrastructure, unmarked intersections, and unlit crossings
These conditions are not just inconvenient; they are life-threatening
Over the past year, countless reports have been submitted to the municipality, yet little to no visible intervention has followed In many areas, potholes span entire lanes, forcing vehicles to swerve into oncoming traffic

A police officer’s childhood dream to join the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) K9 unit was finally fulfilled in 2018
Born and raised with a strong sense of duty, Const Cobus van Wyk's path into the police force took a decisive turn following a traumatic experience in 2011
While working on a mine in Allanridge and studying towards a qualification to practice law, he and his girlfriend (now wife) were violently attacked and robbed in Welkom
Van Wyk sustained multiple stab wounds and a broken jaw The suspects fled with nothing more than a R20 note
“That experience changed my path,” he says “I wanted to stand on the front lines and be part of the solution”
This year, the police joins the country in observing Youth Month by celebrating its young men and women in blue, who go above and beyond the call of duty
Van Wyk (34) is attached to the Welkom K9 unit, and with over a decade of service in the police service, his journey is one of an unwavering commitment to community safety
In 2015, he joined the police by training at the Graaff-Reinet police academy, and completed his fieldwork at the Ventersburg Police Station, where he developed a deep understanding of all core police duties
He was later stationed at the Maseru Bridge Border Post, gaining expertise in border control, vehicle inspections, and document verification
His ability to read environments and people with precision was forged in this challenging setting
Inspired by the K9 unit’s visits to his primary school, he became a certified patrol dog handler in 2024 and was partnered with Kelly, a 42kg Rottweiler whose commanding presence alone helped prevent resistance at crime scenes
Her untimely passing due to medical complications remains a deep, personal loss
“She was not just my partner – she was family,” he reflects

In 2023, Van Wyk broadened his service by joining the Free State police’s learner diver programme
Under the mentorship of WO Morne Koch, he participates in underwater search and rescue missions, evidence recovery and anti-poaching patrols in major dams, including the Vaal and Bloemhof dams
Off-duty, he is a community coach, a tech enthusiast, and a lifelong learner

With just a few days to go to the 30th annual Polar Bear Swim that will take place at Aldam in the Willem Pretorius Game reserve, arrangements are in high gear

The Ring Contact Fighting Arts (RCFA) Bhubezi Fight Club recently competed at the AllOut War Tournament held in Potchefstroom This event also served as the official 2025 Free State provincial team trials.
The club delivered an outstanding showing, with two students featured on the main card
Brandon Kelly stepped into the ring for the Junior South African (SA) Millennium Title in the under 65kg division His performance was both disciplined and powerful, reflecting his experience and commitment to the sport
In another highlight, Siyabonga Gina made his official debut in the full contact category, marking a significant milestone in his martial arts journey
The other results are:
■ Gofaone Sebati received gold in the semi-contact high kick and Bo staff fighting categories, a silver for baton fighting , and a bronze for the series mode
■ Siyabonga Gina received gold for full contact high kick
■ Kelly received gold for Bo staff fighting, semi–contact sport boxing, Millennium, and a bronze for the second series
■ Mohale Notha received three silver medals for sports boxing and high kicks, Millennium, as well as a bronze for series
■ Steven Nkgadima received two silver medalsfor low kick and Millennium

Top swimmers in the Goldfields were honoured for their prowess in the pool during the annual prize-giving of the Welkom Aquatics Swimming Club on 7 June
Swimmers, coaches, and families honoured the commitment and achievements of the club’s athletes over the past season Donna van Wyk, spokesperson for the club, says the swimmers were also acknowledged for their efforts, consistency and positive attitude throughout the season
