Kreatiwiteit op meer as een manier uitgebeeld

Jong ontwerper skitter MARTI WILL

My vriendinne vra my gereeld om hul

Social ills challenged Poultry project Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Lejweleputswa District, along with police officers of the Welkom SAPS, joined various departments of government and partner organisations in a multisectoral gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) awareness programme. This was held at the Goldfields TVET College’s Welkom campus on Tuesday 13 October. Conducted under the theme of “Letsema: Men, Women, Boys and Girls Working To-

gether to END GBVF,” the programme highlighted the importance of collective responsibility, community participation and collaboration in preventing and responding to reports of GBVF through the correct channels. The initiative brought together stakeholders to educate students about GBVF, raise awareness of available support services, encourage the reporting of incidents and strengthen cooperation between law enforcement agencies, government departments and institutions of higher

learning. The police used the programme to educate students on the procedures for reporting incidents of gender-based violence (GBV) and opening related criminal cases, emphasising the importance of reporting such crimes and seeking assistance. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen awareness, encourage victims to seek help and promote a collective approach to combating occurrences of GBVF in communities.

A poultry project near Meloding, intended to create jobs for local youth and boost agricultural development, has been left in a state of disrepair after more than R52 million in public funds was invested in its construction. The Virginia Mega Poultry Project was designed to accommodate up to 200 000 broiler chickens per production cycle across five poultry houses, each with a planned capacity of 40 000 birds. Today, much of the facility’s infrastructure has reportedly been vandalised or removed, raising questions about the protection of public assets and the management of government-funded projects. The project was established between 2014 and 2017, with R30 million allocated in the 2014-’15 financial year, R9 million in 2015-’16 and a further R13 million in 2016-’17. It was intended to benefit 17 local young people by creating opportunities in agriculture, transforming ownership in the sector and stimulating the local economy. However, the initiative encountered several operational challenges, including high chick mortality rates, a

lack of established markets, missing infrastructure such as decontamination showers, and shortages of essential management and technical skills. An oversight visit by the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) in 2018 reportedly identified several problems at the facility. According to Roy Jankielsohn, leader of the opposition in the Free State Legislature, the concerns were not adequately addressed by the Free State Department of Agriculture. Jankielsohn said a private company offered to partner with the government in 2020, potentially providing the management expertise, technical skills and market access needed to revive the project.

The project’s deterioration has renewed concerns about the long-term viability of agricultural initiatives that receive substantial public funding but fail to deliver their intended benefits. The DA has criticised the project for failing to fulfil its promise of sustainable employment and economic opportunities for communities in Virginia and Meloding. The Virginia Mega Poultry Project was intended to provide young people with a foothold in the agricultural sector. Its current condition raises questions about accountability, the management of public resources and whether the intended beneficiaries have received any lasting benefit.

MATHJABENG SINK IN STIKDONKERTE IN MARTI WILL Meer as 80% van straatligte in Matjhabeng Plaaslike Munisipaliteit werk nie.

Attendees offered tools to inspire workshop feeling renewed in their sense of calling and more confident in their ability to serve their community with the needed compassion and conviction. The leadership workshop forms part of the Full Gospel Church – City of Praise’s ongoing commitment to nurturing strong, faith-driven leadership within its congregation and the wider Thabong community. It is through initiatives such as this that the church has in the past, and continues to further build upon a foundation of capable, spirit-led leaders who can guide others with wisdom and grace.

The Full Gospel Church – City of Praise successfully held a powerful Leadership Workshop on Saturday 3 October, at its premises in Thabong, bringing together church leaders and congregants for a day dedicated to learning, empowerment and spiritual growth. Hosted by the church’s Pastor Lifa Reginald Mponeng, the workshop was designed to equip both current and aspiring leaders within the congregation with the practical tools and spiritual grounding needed to lead effectively - not only within the walls of the church, but also in their everyday lives and broader community of Thabong. The workshop featured a line-up of esteemed guest speakers, each bringing a unique perspective and depth of experience to the topics at hand. Among the speakers were Dr Igor Scheurkogel, Alice Jacobs, Pastor Kula and Luttiga Presente, all of whom shared insightful and thought-provoking teachings on what it means to lead

within the church and beyond. The speakers covered a range of core themes central to effective Christian leadership.

These themes include servant leadership, integrity, character, leading with purpose and many more. The congregation was inspired

Church gives thanks to the Lord On the weekend of 26 September, the Rovers Rugby Club was a sea of blue and white as the Twelve Apostles Church in Trinity held its Regional Thanksgiving Day, graced by the leadership of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality. Region 5 of the Free State hosted West Rand 1 and West Rand 2 from Gauteng for a joint Thanksgiving Day in Welkom. On the same weekend, congregations in other regions of South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini held Thanksgiving celebrations of their own. The weekend drew its spirit from the annual greeting of the church's president and Chief Apostle, S.D. Ndlovu, sent to all congregations. In it, the Chief Apostle reminds members that faith is seen in how believers live. “People will come to know God, our Creator, through the good deeds others speak of,” he writes. “You must bear good fruit.” His words echo Jesus in Matthew 5:16: “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. “That message rang out on the field on Sunday, when Father Apostle S.S. Magano used his address to strongly denounce gender-based violence (GBV). In the wake of a recent attack that has shaken the commu-

and equipped to lead with humility, accountability and faith, following the example of Christ. Many reported that they left the

nity, he rebuked violence against women and children in plain terms, reminding the thousands gathered that no one can claim to carry the light of God while bringing fear into their own home. On Sunday morning, the Apostle’s entourage led the procession onto the field. Magano, Mother Apostle Magano, and Mother Apostle Lubuzo were received by members standing in long, ordered lines across the pitch. The service was followed by an afternoon of regional youth choirs, testimonies from the sisters, and the words of evangelists from each region.

For the chairman of the local organising committee (LOC), Overseer Mshuta, the weekend was Ndlovu's message come to life. “A candle does not light itself. It burns so others can see. This weekend, three regions became one flame. People travelled through the night, carried their children, and stood in the rain to say thank you to God. Now we go home to be that light in our streets, in our homes and in our towns. That is what thanksgiving truly means. Not only the words we sing on Sunday, but the good we do on Monday.”  Tshepang Phosholi

FINALISTS IN PAGEANT HONOUR THEIR ELDERS The finalists of the Mr and Miss Face of Matjhabeng pageant recently visited Huis Ougoud in Welkom, where they spent a memorable day with elderly residents, bringing gifts, entertainment, and companionship. The visit formed part of the pageant’s commitment to community service, emphasising that being a role model extends beyond wearing a crown to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. The visitors brought sweets, treats and fresh fruit for the residents. They also shared laughter, danced and entertained the elderly, creating a joyful atmosphere. The finalists said the visit was

particularly meaningful because the residents represented a generation that had helped build Welkom, raise families and lay the foundations for future generations. “Seeing the residents’ smiles reinforced the importance of spending time with older people and making them feel loved, valued and appreciated,” said Rito Madingana, pageant director. A highlight of the visit was when residents asked the finalists to return, leaving the group grateful for the opportunity to share the day with them. The Mr and Miss Face of Matjhabeng team thanked the Huis Ougoud staff and residents for their warm welcome and said

they looked forward to visiting again. As preparations continue for the grand finale, the organisers said their vision remained focused on leadership, service, community upliftment and inspiring the next generation. Tickets for the pageant’s grand finale are still available, made available directly from the contestants. The event will take place at Ferdi Meyer Hall on Tuesday 1 December, scheduled to start at 18:00. The organisers have encouraged the community to support the finalists and attend the event as the next Mr and Miss Face of Matjhabeng are crowned.

My House Didn't Sell.

What Now? home is overpriced, they often do not negotiate, they simply move on to the next one.

Putting your home on the market and not getting the result you expected is frustrating.

Maybe you had viewings but no offers. Maybe there was interest at first and then everything went quiet. Or maybe the property sat for months and eventually the mandate expired. The worst thing you can do is simply put it back on the market in exactly the same way and hope for a different outcome. If your property didn't sell, the market has already given you information. The next step is working out what that information is telling you. Start with the price. Was the asking price based on recent registered sales and current market conditions, or was it based on what you hoped to get? Buyers compare properties very quickly. If they feel your

Then look at the condition of the property. It does not need to be modern or newly renovated, but obvious maintenance issues can make buyers nervous. Peeling paint, leaks, damaged ceilings, untidy gardens and unfinished repairs all add up in a buyer's mind. Next, look at the marketing.

This is where sellers sometimes struggle. If several buyers mention the same concern, it is worth paying attention. You may not agree with the feedback, but repeated comments are usually telling you something about how the market is experiencing your property. The answer is not always to drop the price. Sometimes the problem is presentation. Sometimes it is marketing. Sometimes it is access. And sometimes the market has simply shifted.

Were the photographs good enough? Did the advert show the property at its best? Was it promoted properly? Did buyers actually know it was available?

Before relisting, take a proper look at what happened the first time.

Access also matters. If viewing the property was difficult, limited to certain times or repeatedly postponed, that could have cost you opportunities.

Ask, “What do I need to change to give it a better chance this time?” If your property in Welkom has been on the market without selling, contact Q Prop for an honest, realistic assessment before you relist.

And then there is buyer feedback.

Do not ask, “Why didn't anybody buy my house?”

Siblings shine on horseback MARTI WILL

Two young equestrians from Belinda’s Horseriding School (BRS) are celebrating a milestone after making their mark at the South African National Equestrian Schools Association (Sanesa) Rising Star Championships.

Siblings Hlompho and Atile Mohlatsane have turned their passion for horse riding into promising sporting careers, producing impressive performances at the national championships. Hlompho claimed first place in the 10-and-Above Intro Equitation category, riding BRS Mango No 5. She also had a string of first and second place finishes in her jumping classes.

Her younger brother Atile competed in the U10 Jumping category on BRS Luna Love Good, also receiving prizes at the prize-giving ceremony. The siblings began riding at BRS in July 2025, with Atile initially introduced to the sport through equitherapy. According to the family it has helped Atile develop skills such as hand-eye concentration, time management and balance, while giving him the opportunity to be outdoors with horses. His confidence grew quickly, and even more so after taking part in a training show at BRS and winning a rosette and medal. “His competing career started there. It was always his best when he could beat his sister,” coach Shaylene Basson said. Hlompho was inspired by seeing how much her brother enjoyed riding

and decided she wanted to join him. She has worked hard under the guidance of her coach, with the pair developing a strong understanding and working relationship. Hlompho has now acquired her own horse and is preparing to begin competing off lead. Parents Joseph and Monstheng Mohlatsane have played an important role in helping the children pursue their passion for equestrian. Grandad Selebalo Mohlatsane has learned to tow the horsebox, enabling the family to transport the horses to competitions. Grandad and his wife, Mohanua Molope, take Hlompho and Atile to their riding lessons, and equitherapy sessions twice a week. With their riding journey that began just over a year ago, Hlompho is preparing to compete independently and Atile continues to develop his skills.

Dr Retha Swart, eye specialist with more than 14 years’ experience in private practice will be consulting in Welkom, Wednesday, 21 October 2026. For more information or to book an appointment, please contact her ofce at 051 522 0002 or send a WhatsApp to 071 775 3777. NM10076626-VI151026
