Poor services the norm

MARTI WILL

Residents of Matjhabeng are being let down daily by a municipality more focused on summits, Imbizos, pipe-dream project launches, and PR stunts than on actual service delivery. While the Mayor moves from one event to the next, boasting about “fixing Matjhabeng”, the lived reality tells a different story.

Residents go without water for days Raw sewage flows through streets and private properties Potholes are left unattended, streetlights stay broken, and critical infrastructure continues to decay

Meanwhile, public funds are spent on promotional events to boost the mayor ’ s image instead of addressing urgent community needs

“Since the mayor ’ s return in April, an already struggling municipality has spiralled into complete dysfunction The failed

‘Project Patala’ resulted in paying residents and businesses being disconnected from electricity, triggering legal battles that will cost the municipality dearly,” says Maxie Badenhorst, DA councillor in Ward 3

“Whatever revenue was gained has been squandered on talk shows and image campaigns Residents receive water outage notices at 21:30, long after the supply was already cut at 17:00 This is not just negligent; it’s deeply disrespectful There ’ s no accountability or consequence management because comrades are protected

“If you ’ re part of the ruling party, you ’ re untouchable Opposition councillors are deliberately sidelined Meeting notices arrive less than 12 hours before sessions, often during working hours, to prevent part-time councillors from participating and asking difficult questions”

Badenhorst says her party has become the unofficial municipal call centre

“We respond to residents, investigate issues, and even use our funds to buy taps or meters to stop water loss Municipal officials, however, are too busy attending events with the mayor, ignoring reports from ward councillors and failing to act on repeated issues,” she says

In Karel Crause Street, Hennenman, a resident has lived for months surrounded by sewage Businesses are closing due to blocked sewer lines and unbearable stench In Phomolong, residents report monthly sewage problems, but no action

is taken The so-called “ war room ” for service complaints is a complete failure Reports go in, but no feedback comes out

“It’s time for real leadership and service, not self-congratulation If the mayor believes he’s doing well, let him prove it with results: reliable water, working sanitation systems, infrastructure repair, and accountability The residents of Matjhabeng are tired of speeches and photo opportunities We demand action, transparency, and leadership that works for the people”

In Hertzog Street, also in Hennenman, in front of a second-hand shop and the Savanna Pub and Grill, a sewerage situation resulted in the restaurant cancelling a breakfast booking because the smell was unbearable

“This has been going on for months The municipality does temporary fixes that last for a day or two then the spillage is back”

Alleged robbers caught red-handed in act

The Matjhabeng Local Municipality strongly condemns the persistent theft and vandalism of critical municipal infrastructure, acts which not only disrupt service delivery, but also pose serious risks to public safety

On 25 June seven unidentified males were observed attempting to load a manhole cover into a vehicle in St Helena

Their criminal activity was interrupted by members of the police who were conducting a routine patrol in the area

“Upon noticing the police vehicle, the suspects abandoned the stolen municipal property and fled the scene on foot, leaving their vehicle behind

“The abandoned vehicle has since been secured by law enforcement and forms part of an active investigation," says Tshediso Tlali, spokesperson for the executive Mayor of Matjhabeng Local Municipality

Tlali says the municipality commends the prompt and effective response by police and reaffirms its commitment to working hand-in-hand with law enforcement agencies to curb the theft and destruction of public infrastructure

“We urge residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious behaviour to the relevant authorities

“Safeguarding municipal

infrastructure is a collective responsibility

“By working together, we can ensure that Matjhabeng remains a safe, functional, and service-driven municipality Let us unite against infrastructure theft and vandalism,” he says

Waiting could create space for growth

The biggest challenge everyone has is to control themself.

It always seems like the others are making strides in life while your own life is moving slowly. One of the biggest lessons I have learnt in life is that the Lord will always seem like He will not show up until He shows up

The Bible in James 5:7 speaks about the farmer waiting for the fruit of the earth, the early rains and latter rains Waiting is not sitting and doing nothing

It is a time of preparation, establishing ourselves Waiting is also a time of learning the correct habits and perfecting our faith Everything that God establishes is timeless hence takes time to take root Resist the temptation to fret over comparisons with peers who may appear to progress rapidly

According to E M Forster, “ we must be willing to let go of the life we have planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us ”

Diary

5 JULY

The scriptures teach us the correct posture in waiting:

■ be grateful (in 1 Thessalonians the Bible exhorts us to be thankful) Thank God for the good in your life Look for the good and be thankful for it

■ maintain faith in God (Psalm 46:10 says we need to be still)

■ be productive Be faithful with the talent you have been given Be faithful with your time and dedicate it to God

■ be calm (while weeping might endure for a night, joy will come in the morning) There is no problem without a solution

■ accept that you are not in control of timelines The Bible encourages us not to worry Everyone has to wait; it is not just you

We accelerate by waiting Isaiah 40 states that those who wait on the Lord will soar on wings like eagles Worry not while waiting, your wings are around the corner if you do not despair

CENTRE APPEALS FOR DONATIONS OF WINTER CLOTHING FOR CHILDREN

The Morning Star Children’s Centre is making an urgent appeal for winter clothing The centre was born out of a Christian compassion for the plight South Africa found itself in during the height of the HIV/AIDS pandemic

“And 25 years later we are still committed to restoring hope to the women and children of our region and making a difference to as many families as possible Winter is here, and we are in need of winter clothing In fact, our cupboards are almost de-

Letters

pleted, testimony to our inability to keep pace with supply and demand Warm clothing is essential, as many of our children have an immune system that is already compromised, live in accommodation that often lacks any form of heating, so dressing warmly becomes a matter of survival Please open your hearts and help us, as you have done in the past,” says Joan Adams, project ambassador Adams says they will accept and appreciate any winter clothing

Show equal support to all

Catherine Zwiegelaar,Welkom:

Is my emotional support animal going to contaminate the food in a fast food business? She is constrained and trained to protocol I’m ordering at the counter, nowhere near to where the food is prepared Yes, I can order online and have it delivered Why should I hide to please society? I have the right to be part of society Who are you to say the other customers don’t approve of it I was taught you can’t speak for others as they have a right to decide for themselves Society is closed-minded and

don’t like change Society is stuck in yesteryear when it comes to mental disability and disorders Why should I be denied when I also just would like to have a “normal” life Society frowns upon mental disorders and it is considered unacceptable Who are you to judge or deny people with mental disorders to be part of society?

I will support the businesses that have welcomed me and my emotional support dog as a client or customer, and will spread the word that there are business owners in Welkom who show empathy

“But our immediate needs are focused towards supplying our older children aged 5 to 12 years and upwards, with warm long trousers, jerseys, track tops, long sleeved T-shirts, socks and warm winter jackets It would be impossible to continue our ministry without your ongoing help,” she says Donations can be dropped off at the Morning Star Centre, situated at Kopano Complex, Meulen Road, (opposite Mediclinic) or alternatively, Morning Star could arrange to collect

Plea for help with crisis

Concerned resident,ward 11:

Our sewerage system is a mess (problem) which is not being attended to We have two sewerage plants that are not being attended to, hence making our lives in this ward a living nightmare

Our community stadium has three manholes that are overflowing The worst part of this is that these manholes are situated near the school that our children attend These manholes are situated at Waterboer Street and the smell coming of it its unbearable

We simply ask that the person

who is in charge of this department to please avail himself and see to it this matter is solved I went there myself to their offices and he was not there I humbly ask that he sees that this matter gets his urgent attention Our residents have given up that anything will be done Even if we go to the municipal office in our ward, they do not have a direct line to communicate with this department I am asking that the message gets to the relevant department, and it gets attended to

Talle probleme in dorp sleep voort

Youth unemployment sk

The latest youth unemployment statistics indicate that the persistently high youth unemployment rate in the Free State has now escalated to 69 4% for youths in the 15 to 24 age group and to 45 4% for people in the 25-to-34-year age group

These statistics are according to the StatsSA Quarterly Labour Force Survey, and this bleak reality is a reflection of a collapsing provincial administration, systemic financial mismanagement and local governments in free fall

According to Werner Pretorious, DA member of the committee on Economic Development in the Free State Legislature, young people in the Free State are trapped in a cycle of hopelessness and exclusion, with little access to opportunities, training, or meaningful work This is the direct consequence of poor governance, unchecked corruption and a refusal to prioritise economic growth and skills development The Free State Provincial Government ( billion in irregu expenditure in year alone Th been spent on projects, traini Wi-Fi, and stud Pretorious c steps to cut wa tions into finan enforce conseq “In addition the province ca municipalities unemploymen as long as mun basic services activity Our tr is clear The W governs, consi unemploymen that clean gov management, functionality c

The victim initially paid R5 000 and later handed over an additional R10 000 to Matsoso, as the second payment Matsosa disappeared with the money and none of the children got the promised jobs at the mine

A case of fraud was opened at the Odendaalsrus police station when Matsoso disappeared Although the case was provisionally withdrawn in November 2024, a warrant for Matsoso's arrest has since been issued by the Odendaalsrus Magistrate's Court He has reportedly been in hiding since the warrant was issued
