Police investigation confirms identity of boy who drowned MARTI WILL A 13-year-old boy drowned at a water-filled quarry near Erfdeel Road in Thabong after reportedly swimming with two friends on Saturday 31 October. The body of the boy, identified by his family as Kamohelo Mokhethi

(13), was retrieved from the water on the morning of Sunday 1 November. According to police, the incident occurred when the three boys were swimming at the quarry. Mokhethi’s friends allegedly told police that he became submerged and failed to resurface. A search and rescue operation

could not be conducted immediately because of poor lighting conditions. The Welkom and Bloemfontein diving units were activated on Sunday morning and recovered the boy’s motionless body from the water at approximately 08:15. Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel pronounced him dead at

the scene. Police have registered an inquest and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning. Police have urged parents and guardians to educate children about water safety to prevent similar tragedies. Children should be taught to seek

permission before going near any body of water and encouraged to swim only in designated areas under proper supervision. ■ The police have additional safety tips available on their website, saps. gov.za. At the homepage, navigate to the “Be Alert!” tab and find a variety of safety tips listed.

Sales representative in court Report water leaks

A sales representative (52) has been arrested for alleged fraud, forgery, uttering and money laundering involving fraudulent solar system applications valued at approximately R719 944. Pieter Johannes Jakobus Theunissen appeared before the Welkom Magistrates’ Court on 27 October, following an investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit in the Free State. The Hawks stated Theunissen was employed as a sales representative at Nashua when he allegedly concluded two master sales agreements with clients on 24 January and 27 February 2023 for the installation of solar systems. The rental agreements were submitted to a finance

house and approved, resulting in Theunissen allegedly receiving commission. Subsequent investigations reportedly established that the applications were fraudulent and that the clients’ signatures had allegedly been forged. The clients had not applied for the solar systems, the Hawks said. As a result of the alleged fraudulent transactions as claimed to have been committed by Theunissen, Nashua was required to refund the finance house and suffered financial losses. A criminal case was opened, and the matter was referred to the Hawks. Theunissen was released on R3 000 bail after appearing in court. The matter was postponed to 2 February 2027 for transfer to the Commercial Court.

to speed up repair MARTI WILL Water losses in Matjhabeng Local Municipality’s reticulation network, coupled with increased demand in Phomolong, have been identified as key factors behind ongoing water supply problems affecting Hennenman, Ventersburg and Mmamahabane. This follows a meeting between representatives of Vaal Central Water (VCW) and Matjhabeng Local Municipality (MLM) on 28 October, to discuss the continued water shortages affecting residents and businesses. According to feedback provided by Cllr René Steyn, the VCW’s chief executive officer indicated that the water board had maintained a steady pumping rate over the past 12 months, with no change in supply capacity. VCW reportedly attributed the shortages to water losses in the municipality’s distribution network and the installation of new pipelines in Phomolong, which allegedly took place without the water board being informed timeously. The new infrastructure has increased demand on the existing supply, with the same volume of water now required to serve a larger area. Phomolong is reportedly situated at the lowest point in the system, resulting in an estimated 80% of the water currently being pumped flowing towards the area. This contributes to shortages in Hennenman, Ventersburg and Mmamahabane. Serious leaks have also been identified just outside Riebeeckstad, prompting the temporary closure of supply to certain areas to isolate the leaks and allow repairs to begin. However, iso-

lating the first leak did not resolve the problem, with further water losses reportedly continuing through other leaks in the network. A Riebeeckstad resident has offered to provide a comprehensive list of identified leaks to assist the teams in tracking and prioritising repairs. Following the meeting, VCW and MLM agreed to work together immediately to locate and repair all identified leaks in Riebeeckstad. VCW also undertook to ration the water supply to Phomolong to ensure that Hennenman and Ventersburg receive water as well. The head of department responsible for Water and Sanitation has mandated regular progress reports from the municipal manager on the joint effort. Steyn said she would continue to monitor progress with the repairs and provide further updates. Residents have been encouraged to report any new leaks, providing the location and photographs where possible, to help authorities identify and address water losses. While residents are not responsible for investigating water losses or failing infrastructure, reporting visible leaks could help speed up the repair process. Steyn acknowledged the impact the ongoing crisis has had on households and businesses. She has also approached the provincial Department of Water and Sanitation through the Provincial Legislature, as well as the office of the national minister through a Member of Parliament. The aim is to ensure that the relevant spheres of government hold both the water board and municipality accountable while working towards a resolution to the continuing water crisis.

Murder suspects still sought MARTI WILL No arrests have yet been made in connection with the murders of Danie Fourie (68) and his son, Dawie (40), who were found dead at their home in Virginia in July. An intensive police investigation was launched after the father and son were reported missing on Monday 27 July. Their bodies were discovered three days later, on Thursday 30 July, at a property in Tulbagh Street. Virginia police responded to a report of a possible murder on Thursday 30 July. On arrival, officers were di-

rected to an outside room, where they discovered the bodies of two men. The victims’ hands and feet were bound, and blood was on the floor of the room. Police said one of the men had a plastic covering over his head, while the other had allegedly been strangled with a wire around

his neck. Both men were declared dead at the scene. Investigators have also confirmed that the victims’ silver Hyundai Getz, with registration number DNK 369 FS, is missing. The vehicle is believed to have been taken during the incident. Police opened two murder cases and a case of house robbery. The motive for the killings are unknown. Police are appealing to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward. Call Capt. Gerrie Nel on 082 806 8432 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Community mourns loss of local educator MARTI WILL

The body of missing Welkom educator Gert Samuel Adams (55) was recovered from a water pan near the Steyn 1 mining area in Welkom on Thursday 29 October, almost four weeks after he disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Police were summoned to Klippan at approximately 11:35 after a fisherman reportedly noticed a foul smell coming from the water and spotted a human body floating in it. The fisherman alerted the police and directed officers to the location. The Bloemfontein Diving unit was activated, and police divers successfully retrieved the submerged body before bringing it to shore. Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel subsequently pronounced the man dead. On Friday 30 October, Adams’ family positively identified the deceased as the missing 55-yearold educator. Adams disappeared on Sunday 4 October, after he was allegedly taken by unknown suspects at approximately 23:30. According to police information, he managed to telephone his wife shortly after the incident, but the call was abruptly terminated. He was subsequently

reported missing. His grey Hyundai ix35 was discovered at Klippan on Tuesday 6 October. The vehicle was unoccupied, with his cellphone and other personal belongings found inside. Police confirmed that Adams was found with his vehicle keys in his pocket. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance and death remain unclear. Police have registered an inquest docket to investigate the matter and establish the cause of death. Meanwhile, the Free State Department of Education has expressed profound sadness following confirmation of Adams’ death. Adams was an educator and departmental head at the Rheederpark Combined School in the Lejweleputswa District. The

department described him as a dedicated, valued and respected member of the school community who served with commitment and distinction. His death is a significant loss to his family, colleagues, learners and the wider education fraternity in the province. The department has activated psychosocial support services for staff and learners at the school. In consultation with the family and district, the school will also implement measures to ensure that teaching and learning, as well as the finalisation of term 4 learner assessments, continue with minimal disruption. The Free State MEC for Education, Dr Mantlhake Julia Maboya, conveyed her condolences to the bereaved family and the school community. “We have lost a teacher, a leader and a custodian of our children’s future. Mr Adams did not just teach subjects, he taught hope. “To his family, his colleagues and his learners – we share your pain. May his dedication to education continue to live in every classroom he touched. We have lost a soldier in the frontline of learning,” Maboya said. Further details regarding memorial and funeral arrangements will be communicated in consultation with the family.

SPILLAGES MARTI WILL Sewage has reportedly been flowing into a national retailer’s parking area in Glen Harmony, Virginia, since July, raising health concerns and affecting access to the shopping centre. A concerned resident of ward 8, Kevin Ostermeyer, has requested that the relevant authorities investigate the cause of the sewage spills, arrange for the affected parking area to be cleaned and disinfected, and ensure that the necessary repairs are undertaken to prevent further overflows with regular updates.

Hope for the week

The Word of God is the key to freedom It has become evident that mental health and associated illnesses have become one of the most common occurrences among both believers and non-believers alike. The pressures of life and the demand for performance in our personal and professional lives on and offline, influenced by the continuous stream of the highlight reels of others has had damaging effects on most. The amount of information consumed on a daily basis has been compared to the amount of information our great grandparents consumed in a year. Never before has information been so easily and continuously available. Wars. Famines. Threats. Abuses. Human atrocities. Cruelties. We were never designed to know everything and be connected on such a level. We are neither omnipotent, omniscient or omnipresent. Only God is. 1 Peter 5: 7 says, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” This might seem like an impossibility in many minds overrun with daily concerns and intrusive thoughts, but it remains our one true hope in the face of the many challenges we face daily. Our Lord Jesus experienced the full weight of the human condition including physical, emotional and spiritual, and yet, in his darkest hour, he remained

fully submitted to the will of the Father and so, triumphed over evil. Ephesians 1: 21 says, “He is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else – not only in this world, but also in the world to come.” We are told in Ephesians 2: 6, “And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.” This is a truth, which, if we receive it, would truly set us free. We can overcome because of our Saviour. We can be victorious in our daily lives. We can walk in wholeness, spirit, soul and body and we can be free from the effects of a broken world. We can experience the peace He came to give, despite our circumstances. May I encourage us to stay more tuned to the word of God, which is the sword with which we stand against the onslaught of the enemy of our souls, than to the sound of the daily news or Facebook or TikTok or Instagram. We know that Jesus is the word become flesh and that He triumphed over the enemy by death on the cross. We then hold within our hands and mouths the power to stand against anything the enemy might bring against us. Let us declare the word of life over our hearts and minds and may we implore others to do the same. – Lana Archontakis – Kingdom Ministries of Christ

Civic trust a matter Pastors and polygamy probed of contention Tshepo Davids, Tshepo Davids Foundation: The crisis in Matjhabeng extends far beyond potholes, water shortages and overflowing sewage. It raises serious questions about financial management, accountability, governance and the municipality’s ability to deliver basic services to its residents. The fundamental question is: What is the purpose of political leadership if residents must continually struggle for services they are entitled to receive? Residents cannot be expected to accept endless explanations about inherited problems while their living conditions continue to deteriorate. Previous administrations may have contributed to the municipality’s challenges, but every new administration has a responsibility to demonstrate measurable progress. Political office is a public trust, not an entitlement. Councillors are elected to represent communities, oversee municipal finances, maintain infrastructure and ensure that residents receive essential services – not simply to occupy offices, attend meetings and make promises. The people deserve leadership that recognises that public office comes with responsibility, accountability and an obligation to serve. The future of Matjhabeng must be about its people, not political power.

Pastor Khaya Mqeke, founder and host preacher of the Enlightened Church of Christ in Welkom: The question of polygamy among pastors requires the Church to return to Scripture and examine what the Bible teaches about marriage and spiritual leadership. Although the Bible records several men, including Abraham, Jacob, David and Solomon, having multiple wives, these accounts do not mean that God endorses polygamy as His ideal for marriage or as an acceptable standard for Christian pastors. The Bible also records jealousy, deception, adultery and family conflict, none of which should be regarded as examples to follow. In Gen.29–30, Jacob's household experienced rivalry and jealousy. Similarly, 1 Kings 11:1–10 explains how Solomon's many foreign wives turned his heart away from God. To understand God's design for marriage, read Gen. 2:24: “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” Jesus reaffirmed this in Matt. 19:4-6, emphasising that God created male and female and that what He has joined together should not be separated. Although Jesus was addressing divorce rather than directly prohibiting polygamy,

His teaching provides a foundation for understanding Christian marriage. The New Testament outlines the qualifications of church leaders. In 1 Tim.3:2, Paul states that an overseer must be “the husband of one wife”. While Christians differ in their interpretation of this, these passages highlight the importance of marital faithfulness, family responsibility and personal conduct in spiritual leadership. According to 1 Tim. 3:4-5, a church leader must manage his household responsibly, as caring for one’s family is closely connected to caring for the Church of God. Pastors are therefore expected to demonstrate self-control, faithfulness and sound judgement. Cultural traditions must also be examined in the light of Scripture. People in existing polygamous households should not face hatred, humiliation or discrimination. James 3:1 reminds us that teachers will be judged more strictly. No pastor, regardless of popularity, wealth or influence, stands above the authority of Scripture. Pastors, let us return to Scripture with humility and honesty. The pulpit must never become a platform for advancing personal interests under the cover of God's authority. Our responsibility is not to reshape Scripture to accommodate our desires, but to submit our desires to its authority.

FS police receive 104 new vehicles The police in the Free State has launched its 2026/2027 Safer Festive Season Operations, with 104 new operational vehicles handed over to bolster crime-fighting efforts across the province. The provincial launch took place at the MN Breytenbach Sportsgrounds in Bultfontein, in the Lejweleputswa District, on Wednesday 28 October, under the theme “Combating Crime Through Decisive Police Action and Robust Community Involvement”. The new vehicles are expected to improve police visibility, strengthen operational capacity and reduce response times. Some have been allocated to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) units to strengthen efforts to combat gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF). The launch began at 06:00 with a high-density, multi-disciplinary roadblock along the R700 in Bultfontein. Led by Col. Fouche of the Anti-Gang Unit, the operation brought together SAPS units and officials from the Department of Traffic, the Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA), and the Department of Home Affairs and Immigration. The operation targeted stock theft, the illegal transportation of non-ferrous metals, illegal firearms and ammunition, illicit drugs, immigration violations and contraventions of the National Road Traffic Act. Officers conducted stop-and-

search operations and vehicle inspections, checking driving licences and roadworthiness. Biometric and other verification devices were used to check identities, firearms, vehicles and cellphones, while vehicle investigators focused on stolen and cloned vehicles, altered vehicle identification numbers (VINs) and tampered

vehicles. Free State Provincial Commissioner Lt. Genl Thabang Lesia visited the roadblock to assess its progress and effectiveness. After receiving a briefing from Col. Fouche, Lesia commended the integrated law enforcement teams for their commitment to crime prevention, compliance and

road safety. Free State Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae also visited the operation and reaffirmed the provincial government’s support for law enforcement agencies, highlighting the importance of collaboration in creating safer roads and communities. The main launch event featured a

multi-disciplinary parade involving SAPS units, the Border Management Authority and the Department of Correctional Services, demonstrating the agencies’ operational readiness. Deputy Minister of Police Cassel Mathale, Letsoha-Mathae, Acting Divisional Commissioner for Inspectorate Lt. Genl. Lineo Nkhoua, Lesia, senior police management, district commissioners, Community Policing Forum representatives and other stakeholders attended the event. One of the highlights was the presentation of the provincial operational plan, delivered in a symbolic handover involving a SAPS helicopter and Parko, a four-year-old Belgian Shepherd from the Bloemfontein K9 Search and Rescue Unit. Parko was handled by W/O Swannie Swanepoel, highlighting the contribution of specialised K9 units to crime prevention and search-and-rescue operations. The programme also included operational demonstrations by the Tactical Response Team, Public Order Police, K9 units and the SAPS Air Wing, with a helicopter and drones showcasing the resources available to support policing operations. The festive season campaign aims to strengthen partnerships between the police and communities, encourage public participation in crime prevention and ensure that residents and visitors can enjoy a safe and peaceful festive season. The police urged continued cooperation between law enforcement agencies, community structures and the public as operations intensify during the holiday period.

Aansoeker: Khauta South Solar PV Facility (RF) (Edms.) Bpk.

Applicant: Khauta South Solar PV Facility (RF) (Pty) Ltd

Beoogde wysiging: Khauta South Solar PV Facility RF (Edms.) Bpk. beoog die wysiging van die Generiese Omgewingsbestuursprogram (OBPr) vir die goedgekeurde 132 kV Eskom Masimong Skakelstasie.

Proposed Amendment: Khauta South Solar PV Facility RF (Pty) Ltd is proposing the amendment of the Generic Environmental Management Programme (EMPr) for the approved 132kV Eskom Masimong Switching Station.

Sport fest goes north South Africa's premier pre-season sporting showcase is about to get significantly bigger. The Six Gun Grill Summer Sport Festival returns from 2 to 8 December with a major expansion that reflects its explosive growth, adding Pretoria's Montana High School as a second venue alongside the established Wellington base at Huguenot High School. The decision to expand into Gauteng comes on the back of phenomenal participation in 2024 and 2025, when over 100 schools and clubs descended on the Western Cape to sharpen their squads ahead of the new season. This speaks to a formula that's resonating with coaches, players and administrators hungry for quality pre-season preparation in a competitive yet constructive environment. The festival's blueprint remains unchanged: deliver high-quality match experience across multiple sporting codes, spanning various age groups to ensure development pathways cater to everyone from promising primary schoolers to senior high school prospects. Co-founder Pieter Rossouw said what makes the festival so special is the opportunity it gives schools to prepare teams in a relaxed yet driven environment before the new season begins. "It's a fantastic way to end the year on a high note, giving players valuable match exposure, building confidence and ensuring they leave motivated, inspired and ready to take on the 2027 sporting season." At the Summer Sport Festival, coaches can experiment with combinations, assess squad depth and identify weaknesses that need addressing before the proper season kicks off. For clubs and schools eyeing dominant 2027 campaigns, the festival offers invaluable intelligence gathering. You get early insights into rival squads, gauge the emerging talent in your age groups and benchmark your own development against the best in the country. The timing is deliberate. Early December sits in that sweet spot where the school year has concluded but the festive break hasn't scattered

squads to the four winds. Players are still sharp, fitness levels remain high and motivation to impress coaches before the holidays is at its peak. The expansion into Pretoria also addresses geographical accessibility. Whilst Wellington remains the spiritual home of the festival, adding Montana as a hub ensures schools in the northern parts of the country aren't facing prohibitive travel costs just to participate. The Six Gun Grill Summer Sport Festival has evolved from promising upstart to essential pre-season fixture in just two years. The Pretoria expansion signals ambition to cement that status whilst broadening access to quality preparation opportunities. For schools serious about 2027 success, this is where the work begins. Tomorrow's heroes are being forged today. Don't miss the chance to be part of it. With participation numbers already north of 100 schools and clubs in previous editions, early registration is advisable to avoid disappointment. Schools and clubs interested in securing their spots can register or gather more information on summerfestival.co.za.
