Constant piles of waste an eyesore

Dangerous environmental conditions at dump sites in Odendaalsrus and Allanridge, as well as at an illegal waste processing plant in Odendaalsrus, have become a source of significant concern and genuine distress for local communities

Residents express concern that neither the local nor district municipalities are taking adequate action to implement proper environmental regulations to ensure the safety of both the environment and the people living within it

Jessica Nel, DA councillor for the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, states that the municipality has persistently neglected waste management facilities, directly endangering surrounding communities, exacerbating public health risks, and accelerating environmental degradation

“During my oversight visit, I discovered that the facility was under lockdown due to a lack of personnel This has resulted in waste being dumped alongside the road leading to the facility by both the public and the refuse department,” Nel reported

The DA will submit a formal letter to the acting municipal manager, Thabo Panyani, compelling the municipality to restore environmental safety and ensure full compliance with environmental health regulations following the ongoing crisis at the Odendaalsrus Waste Management Facility

“This area is not zoned for waste dumping and thus violates numerous environmental regulations It poses a considerable health risk to pupils at the Eldoret Secondary School and residents of the nearby suburb,” Nel emphasised

Fire represents the most significant hazard, as the combustion of plastic waste produces toxic smoke that can be inhaled by residents The situation has already caused an infestation of rodents, snakes, and insects whilst potential fires could force these pests to seek refuge in nearby homes

At the Allanridge dumping site, similar waste problems persist caused by waste being dumped along roadsides According to site workers, the excavator is unavailable due to fuel shortages

“I have been championing environmental issues and reported earlier this

year on a recycling company in Josias Street, Odendaalsrus, that is operating illegally and in breach of environmental regulations

Despite numerous legal interventions to halt these operations and relocate the facility to an approved recycling zone, attempts have proved

futile,” Nel stated

“It is genuinely concerning that neither the local nor district municipality is taking action to implement proper environmental regulations to ensure the safety of the environment and the people living within it”

A request for further intervention will be submitted to the DA provincial leader in the Free State and to the MP for Agriculture and Environmental Affairs, Roy Jankielsohn

Nel emphasises that the Covid-19 pandemic demonstrated how fragile the environment can become and the devastating effect this has on human beings

“Unless all spheres of government begin taking the impact of environmental management seriously, we can be certain of more pandemic outbreaks and dreaded diseases

“We will remain a vigilant watchdog and advocate for environmental safety, promoting quality of life in our communities,” Nel concluded

The situation highlights critical failures in municipal waste management and environmental oversight, with potentially severe consequences for public health and environmental integrity across the Goldfields region

Storm brings with it great damage

A violent and destructive storm with massive hailstones and high winds struck Welkom, Odendaalsrus, and Virginia on Tuesday 2 December leaving a trail of uprooted trees and destroyed homes in its wake

Extensive tree damage

François Klaassen, the assistant fire chief of Matjhabeng, reported that he and his team received numerous reports of fallen trees across the Welkom area

These destroyed roofs, palisades, blocked roads, and crushed walls

Some residents were even unable to access their properties following the storm

Reportedly, more than 30 trees fell in Welkom during the storm, creating widespread disruption across the city

Klaassen noted that massive hailstones reportedly fell in Virginia, whilst fallen trees were reported in Odendaalsrus

Although the South African Weather Service (SAWS) had issued a Yellow Level 2 storm warning on Tuesday morning, Klaassen believes the storm

proved more violent than anticipated Power outage crisis

Strong winds, rain, and hail lashed the city for approximately half an hour, resulting in a power failure across large portions of the city that lasted some six hours

Residents reported between 16mm and 25mm of rainfall during the halfhour period

The power outage occurred on the Eskom side of the Welkom Park substation when the storm caused two insulators to "flash" and trip the electricity supply to Bedelia, Naudeville, Jan Cillierspark, and St Helena

This resulted in large portions of Welkom being blacked out Eskom technicians called to attend to this matter worked tirelessly to restore the supply and replace the affected insulators

In Welkom, roads flooded in Constantia, Human Motors circle, and Jan Hofmeyr opposite Hi-Q which impeded the flow of traffic

In Stateway, between the Deo Doxa Church and the Bedelia shopping complex, the road was inaccessible due to a large fallen tree

Power outages were also reported in Odendaalsrus

Recurring storm trauma

The violent storm that caused hundreds of thousands of rands in damage in Welkom on Friday, 14 November, remains fresh in residents' minds

When dark clouds gathered again on Tuesday, many residents were gripped by memories of that devastating November storm

The recurring severe weather events highlight the vulnerability of the region's infrastructure that always seem to fall victim to extreme weather conditions with long periods of recovery in between
