The event of the year has arrived MARTI WILL The countdown is on to the 24th Mediclinic Vista Road Race, with organisers and Mediclinic staff putting the final preparations in place ahead of Saturday’s event on 22 August.

Left to keep spewing filth This serious health hazard of overflowing raw sewage in the circle at the Voortrekker Bridge over the Sand in Virginia has been present for the last six months. The situation has not yet been given any attention despite the community reporting it to the authorities. Tshediso Tlali, spokesperson for the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, says he will engage with technical services to attend to this problem. PHOTO: Marti Will

Hosted in celebration of Women’s Month, the event will bring runners, families and supporters together for a day of sport and community spirit. Seraphim Nthoana (7) has been crowned second princess in the Girl of the Year 2026 competition. PHOTO: Supplied

The seven-year-old Seraphim Nthoana, a Gr. 2 learner at the Edmund Rice School, has achieved a remarkable milestone after being crowned second princess in the Girl of the Year 2026 competition. Seraphim was selected as one of the finalists in the seven to eight age category at the prestigious event, held in Brakpan on 1 August. The competition brought together

talented and inspiring young girls who were given the opportunity to showcase their confidence, personalities and talents, while highlighting their positive contributions to their communities. Proudly representing her school and community, Seraphim’s impressing the judges is what secured her this personal victory. Her achievement was further

recognised when she received the Paw-sitive Impact Award, which celebrates a contestant’s positive spirit and the difference she makes through acts of kindness and enthusiasm. Seraphim attributed much of her success to the support and guidance of her coach, Monica Ferreira. She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Ferreira for her unwavering

encouragement and for continually challenging her to become the best version of herself. Ferreira has also encouraged Seraphim to believe in her abilities and approach every challenge with confidence and determination. The achievement marks another exciting chapter in Seraphim’s journey, demonstrating that age is no barrier to pursuing big dreams.

The 4 Feral Cats Rescue Organisation, a local cat rescue organisation, is appealing to the Welkom community for assistance as an increasing number of cats in need places growing pressure on its food supplies and veterinary funds. 4 Feral Cats Rescue Organisation does more than care for feral cats. The group also assists families who are struggling to feed their pets, helps sick cats access veterinary treatment and contributes towards veterinary costs when necessary. The organisation also runs a trap, neuter or spay and release programme aimed at controlling the feral cat population humanely. According to the organisation, it currently assists between 300 and 350 cats a month, including about 140 cats living at a cattery on a farm in Hennenman. Other cats are cared for by foster families and volunteers, while additional feeding stations provide food for feral cats in the community.

The organisation is also currently helping two families with cat and dog food so they can continue caring for their pets. The growing demand has left 4 Feral Cats facing mounting food and veterinary costs. “We are seeing a heartbreaking influx of cats, and we just want to be able to give every cat a second chance at a happy life,” Louis Kegan of the organisation said. Community members can support the initiative in several ways. Adoption provides a cat with a permanent home, while fostering gives cats and kittens a safe temporary

home while they wait for their forever families. Volunteers can also assist with bottle-feeding kittens. Financial donations are particularly important to help cover veterinary bills, including treatment for sick animals and sterilisation before cats are released. The organisation also welcomes donations of cat food, kitten milk, blankets and towels to help with its daily operations. 4 Feral Cats is a non-profit organisation and can issue a Section 18A certificate for qualifying donations for tax purposes. The organisation is also planning a major fundraising event towards the end of September, with details to be announced. In addition, a raffle will be held, with the prize being a two-night stay for two people at Bosrand Glamping in Ventersburg. For donations, assistance or more information, contact Louise Kegan on 073 282 1508 for banking details. Every contribution, regardless of size, can help the organisation continue providing food, care and a second chance to cats in need.

Herbst at the helm of Unitas Unitas Secondary School has entered a new chapter under the leadership of its newly appointed principal, Johan Charles Herbst, who has pledged to build on the school’s strong foundations while strengthening its ties with the wider community. The school recently gathered to bid farewell to its former principal, André Marais, and to honour his years of dedicated service to learners, educators and the school community. The farewell brought together parents, community leaders and other stakeholders, highlighting the strong relationship between the school and the community it serves. As the new principal takes up the responsibility of leading Unitas Secondary School, the emphasis is firmly on collaboration and shared responsibility. The principal said the school’s future depended on

recognising that education was a collective effort and that schools could not thrive in isolation. “My vision for Unitas Secondary School is simple yet resolute: ‘Rooted in Community, Striving for Excellence’,” Herbct said. A key priority will be strengthening partnerships between educators, parents, local

businesses and community leaders. These relationships are intended to support higher educational standards and help position Unitas Secondary School among the leading schools in the Free State. However, the school’s ambitions extend beyond academic achievement. The principal said Unitas was committed to developing the whole learner by promoting academic excellence alongside strong moral values, leadership skills and emotional resilience. The aim is to ensure that learners feel supported not only by their teachers and families, but by the wider community as they prepare for an increasingly changing world. The new principal also expressed appreciation to Marais for the foundation he had established during his tenure, saying the school could now build on his contribution as it looks towards the future.

Young queen gives back to achievers At just 13 years old, teenager Lereko Masilo is already using her platform to make a difference in the lives of young people in her community. The Miss Face of Matjhabeng Junior Queen 2024-’25 recently led an outreach initiative through the Lereko Masilo Foundation at the Lephola Second School in Thabong, where hampers were presented to the school’s top-performing

Gr. 9 learners. The initiative was aimed at recognising academic excellence while encouraging learners to remain focused on their education and continue working towards their goals. The hampers were presented as a token of appreciation for the learners’ dedication and commitment to their studies. The foundation hopes this will motivate them to remain disciplined and determined throughout their academic journey.

For Lereko, the initiative is about more than the title she holds. Through her foundation, she is seeking to inspire other young people to believe in themselves, pursue education and use their talents to make a positive contribution to society. The outreach also highlights the importance of young leaders using their platforms to serve their communities. Lereko’s example demonstrates that age need not be a barrier to making a meaningful difference.

Six learners of the Teto High School in Thabong who were among the top 50 nationwide in a short video competition visited the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Friday 14 August. The learners, accompanied by their educator and public speaking coordinator, Vuyiswa Rulashe, participated in the Chinese Consulate Driving Programme and the short video competition, “More Connected Than You Think”. The programme encouraged learners to explore the cultural and social connections between South Africa and China through Chinese culture, language, food, clothing, technology,

and South African and Chinese brands. Teto learner Itumeleng Mofokeng, in Gr. 9, achieved first place in the competition. “This created a meaningful connection between South Africa and China. Through experiencing Chinese culture, language, food, clothing and technology, we had the opportunity to learn, be creative and celebrate the connections between our two countries,” said Itumeleng. “As young South Africans, we are grateful for these opportunities, which inspire cultural understanding and stronger connections between our communities,” he added. The other five participating learners of Teto were: Zenande Gaji, Tsholofelo Baloyi, Hlompho Ramontseng, Ntsako Mabunda and Thimna Qebe.

Young scientists’ innovation displayed

Hope for the week

The joy of being an ambassador for Christ As believers in Christ, we have been given a unique privilege that no other created being possess – we are ambassadors for Christ, created in his image and called to reflect his glory. What an incredible calling it is to reflect the very things our world longs for most: love, hope, grace and mercy. One of the greatest misconceptions is that God requires perfection before He can use us. In reality, He simply asks for willing hearts – people who will allow Him to work in them and through them. As Romans 3:23-24 reminds us: For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Being an image-bearer of

Christ does not depend on our own strength, abilities, or worldly qualifications. It is a gift of grace, freely offered to all who choose to receive it through faith. Though it came at an immeasurable cost through Christ’s sacrifice, it is freely given to those who accept Him. An ambassador does not represent personal interests, but those of the nation he or she serves. In the same way, we represent the Kingdom of God, serving the purposes of our loving and merciful Father. He does not leave us to fulfil this calling in our own strength; instead, He equips and empowers us through his Spirit. What a profound joy and privilege it is to be an ambassador for the Kingdom of God. – Nadia Wulff of Life Church Welkom

Presented by Chillibite Clothing, the event will take place from 2 to 4 October at venues across Welkom. The programme is designed to provide a platform for emerging and established designers while creating opportunities for networking, business development and the promotion of local talent. The event will open on Friday from 08:00 to 16:00 at the Clocktower Garden at Matjhabeng Municipality. The opening day will feature brand activations and exhibitions, giving an opportunity to discover products, services and creative talent while connecting with other participants in the fashion and business sectors. On the Saturday, the focus will shift to the runway at the J Berries Hall in Bronville, with proceedings starting at 15:00 and continuing into the evening. The fashion show will feature collections from emerging and established designers, showcasing contemporary African fashion and highlighting the creativity within the region and beyond. The final day, Sunday 4 October, will take place at the Wild and Out Restaurant and Pub in Welkom, starting at 12:00 and continuing into the evening. The day will focus on fashion expression and cultural celebration, combining fashion with music, art and cultural performances. Organisers say the programme will celebrate diversity, identity and creative expression while highlighting the connection between fashion and African heritage. The Matjhabeng Fashion Week aims to create more than a showcase for clothing. It seeks to provide a platform where creatives, businesses, government and the private sector can connect, while giving local talent an opportunity to gain exposure and develop new opportunities. Residents and visitors are invited to attend the event, support local designers and creatives, and experience fashion as a celebration of culture, innovation and entrepreneurship. Four decades of discovery celebrated MARTI WILL Four decades of nurturing young scientific talent were celebrated at the Eskom Expo Welkom Regional Science Fair, marking 40 years since the region first created a platform for learners to question, investigate and turn their ideas into scientific research. Hosted at the Central University of Technology (CUT), Welkom, on Saturday, 15 August, this year’s Regional Science Fair featured 129 projects, including group projects, presented by 157 learners from Gr. 4 to Gr. 12 and TVET students from NC(V) Levels 2 to 4. The learners qualified for the regional fair after participating in Eskom Expo activities throughout the year, including workshops and compulsory District Expos, where they received guidance and feedback from judges, mentors and Stemi professionals. The projects covered a broad range of scientific interests and communityfocused solutions across the expo’s 13 categories. Social Sciences proved the most popular category, with 33 entries, followed by Engineering with 30 and Plant Sciences with 19. Eskom Expo Welkom Regional Science Fair Director Anina Nel said the 40-year milestone represented a legacy of passion, perseverance and progress. “What you do in life is your history, but what you set in motion and keep in motion is your legacy,” Nel said. She said the Welkom region’s Expo began in 1986 with three people who had a vision and had since developed into a platform that inspires curiosity, innovation and scientific excellence. “Over the past 40 years, generations of young scientists have dared to ask questions, explore possibilities and communicate solutions to shape a brighter future through science,” she said. The awards ceremony recognised learners for excellence in scientific research and innovation, with 21

opportunities remained a priority. “Through Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, we are empowering learners, particularly those from previously disadvantaged communities, to participate, excel and realise their full potential,” she said. Motshele congratulated all participating learners and said the quality and diversity of projects demonstrated the exceptional talent among young South Africans.
