The Free State team of six learners has taken top honours at the fifth Youth4SaferSA National Debate Championship, beating teams from across South Africa in a competition that challenges young people to think critically, research thoroughly, and debate solutions to the country’s challenges. This year’s competition was presented under the theme “50 Years On: Reimagining the Legacy of June 16 for the South African Learner of

Tomorrow.” The Free State team, made up of learners of the Lekgarietse Secondary School and Mamello Secondary School, claimed first place. The North West finished second, while KwaZulu-Natal took third. The championship, organised by the Safer South Africa Foundation (SSAF), brought together 254 learners in Gr. 8 to Gr. 11 of 25 schools across all nine provinces. Pitso Mereko, SSAF Free State provincial coordinator, praised the champions for their preparation and performance. The Free State team comprised Kamohelo

Lebese, Palesa Lethaka, Mosa Malitjane (all of Lekgarietse), Dibuseng Nkoala, Boitumelo Tlhone and Vuyiswa Peter (all of Mamello). Team captain Dibuseng said they spent six weeks preparing intensely for these debates and seeing that hard work pay off with a national victory was an incredible feeling. “Researching this year’s theme taught us how policy decisions work and gave us confidence to offer practical solutions,” she said. The competition provided participants with an opportunity to engage with South Africa’s history while considering practical solutions for the future of education.

The participating schools included learners from townships and rural communities experiencing high levels of poverty and crime. Schools from Welkom, Polokwane, Kimberley, Cape Town, Soweto, East London, Klerksdorp and the Ehlanzeni District in Mpumalanga took part. Their proposals had to balance African history and local culture with the technical skills needed by learners preparing to participate in an increasingly interconnected global economy. The championship also coincided with International Literacy Day on Tuesday 8 September, focusing on “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity”.

New CEO at the helm Plea for respect and stability MARTI WILL

The Free State Department of Health has appointed a new chief executive officer (CEO) at the Bongani Hospital as part of a drive to strengthen governance, accountability and service delivery at the province’s regional hospitals. On 2 September, the Free State MEC for Health, Monyatso Mahlatsi, introduced Kgomotso Phahladira as the Bongani Regional Hospital’s new CEO in Welkom. Phahladira said he already felt a strong sense of belonging at the hospital and called for teamwork in delivering quality healthcare.

“I feel and subscribe to the values that define a family. I am home and I don’t feel lost. Working together as a team will enable us to serve our patients well,” he said. Mahlatsi thanked the

hospital’s acting managers for their contribution and said the appointment of permanent CEOs would strengthen the department’s ability. “With a CEO in place it becomes easier to plan, monitor and execute – always with the patient at the centre,” said Mahlatsi. He added that appointments to hospital boards were at an advanced stage, further strengthening governance structures within the province’s hospitals. Mahlatsi said the department would continue working to strengthen hospital leadership and governance.

FAMILIES MOURN THE LOSS OF THEIR YOUNG BOYS MARTI WILL The Allanridge police are investigating two inquest cases following the deaths of two boys, whose bodies were recovered from a rock dam near Shaft 2. According to Sgt Palesa Thabana of the Lejweleputswa police, officers were first summoned to a possible drowning incident at about 13:30 on 29 August. On arrival, officers were directed to the body of a boy floating in the water. The body was recovered and Thabo Diloko Jeremiah (9) was declared deceased at the scene. Two days later, the police received information after mine security was alerted to the body of another minor floating near the Shaft 2 rock dam at about 12:20.

Police divers were called to the scene and recovered the body of Lethabo Duncken Abraham (8). His father identified the body. The deaths have also prompted concern from the Pule Maile Foundation, which said the boys had drowned in dams reportedly situated on land owned by Harmony Gold Mine near the Nyakallong township. The foundation said four boys, all aged between eight and nine,

had left Nyakallong and crossed the road towards the Harmony Gold Mine area, where they reportedly entered an unattended and unfenced dam. According to the foundation, Thabo drowned while the children were swimming. It also shared that Lethabo’s parents went to the Allanridge Police Station on 30 August, to report him missing. Shimla Mahlatsi of the foundation confirmed that Harmony Gold Mine had paid condolences to the families on Thursday 3 September. “They donated towards the funeral, which was held on Friday. “The families managed to do somethings because they are struggling families,” said Mahlatsi

Political interference allegations surrounding the Middelpunt Solar Project have sparked calls for Free State Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae to intervene before tensions in Hennenman escalate again. DA Matjhabeng Ward Councillor Maxie Badenhorst has accused Executive Mayor Thanduxolo Khalipha and his office of undermining the established Project Liaison Committee (PLC), the formal platform for engagement between the project, the community and other stakeholders. Badenhorst said the PLC’s independence and authority must be protected as the 337 MW photovoltaic project enters a crucial phase expected to create jobs and opportunities for local businesses and SMMEs. “The PLC cannot become an extension of the mayor’s office,” she said. The dispute follows a stakeholder meeting convened by Khalipha on 18 August with local SMMEs, councillors, Mulilo representatives, the project implementation team and other stakeholders. The meeting addressed local procurement, employment, communication and community participation. According to the Matjhabeng Municipality, Khalipha stressed that suitably qualified local SMMEs should gain access to substantive opportunities, including civil, mechanical and electrical work. However, Badenhorst said conflicting accounts about the meeting had raised questions over who has authority to engage stakeholders and make commitments regarding the project.

She alleged that PLC members were initially told by MMC Jaja Radebe, the committee chairperson, that the mayoral meeting was not specifically about Middelpunt and that ward 2 and ward 3 councillors did not need to attend. Badenhorst also questioned the addition of two councillors to the PLC’s WhatsApp group and their participation in meetings, allegedly without a formal PLC resolution. She further raised concerns about an official from the mayor’s office attending PLC meetings despite allegedly not being formally constituted as a member under the committee’s Terms of Reference. She warned that uncertainty over the PLC’s composition and authority could damage community trust. In a Matjhabeng Municipality Facebook post the municipality stated that the mayor’s meeting was specifically focused on local economic benefits arising from the solar project. The concerns are particularly sensitive given previous tensions and unrest in Hennenman linked to the project, which prompted intervention by the premier. Middelpunt reached financial close in April and is expected to generate significant economic opportunities. Badenhorst said the premier must ensure the PLC’s Terms of Reference are respected, clarify stakeholder engagement authority and prevent municipal interventions from undermining existing agreements. “The people of Hennenman deserve transparency, PLC members deserve respect, and the community deserves stability,” Badenhorst concluded.

Beaming with pride after showing exceptional smarts The Setshabelo Primary School has brought pride to the community after taking both first and second position at the Lejweleputswa District Natural Sciences and Technology Quiz. Hosted by the District Natural Sciences and Technology Department at the Aurora Primary School in Welkom on 27 August, the quiz brought together top schools. Setshabelo stole the show by entering two teams that both scooped top honours. Setshabelo Team 2 was crowned district champions, while Setshabelo Team 1 secured second position. Following their victory, the two teams are representing both Setshabelo and Lejweleputswa in Parys from Wednesday 9 September until Friday. The teams were prepared by Mokgothu Lemphane (Science Coach, far left at the back) and Dikeledi Mokgothu (Science Prof, far right at the back). With them are from the left, front: Palesa Boshula, Dikeledi Temeki, Teboho Mokoena and Tlhonolofatso Molefi; back: Mamokete Mokhele, Amohelang Kholong, Keketso Sonopo and Khanyisile Vena. Hoping to carry on The Heal of Hearts Safe Home and Community Development, a non-profit organisation (NPO) in Thabong under the leadership of Julia Matoane, has appealed for assistance to support its operations. The organisation cares for children who cannot be cared for by their biological families due to deceased, absent, or abusive next of kin. The home is located in Phokeng, Thabong. Those wishing to assist can contact Matoane on 082 816 2899. Nkhetheni Masupa and Thoko Nyalani recently visited the home to open a new building structure they helped erect. Masupa traditionally spends time with the less fortunate on his birthday, 7 September, whilst Nyalani celebrates her birthday on 6 September and has been part of the annual visits for years. The children were at school during the visit but later arrived at the Masupatsela Pharmacy to sing “Happy Birthday” and express their gratitude. “Daar was 28 interskole-byeenkomste. Elke skool het die geleentheid gekry om op sy eie veld en op elke ander skool se velde te gaan meeding. Uiteindelik het elke be-

“Wanneer ’n ouer op ’n Saterdagoggend sy of haar kind by ’n skool

aflaai, gebeur daar eintlik iets baie belangriks.

Hope for the week

Overcoming involves an attitude and an action Rampant evil and disorder floods all device screens. But it is not just global – it is local, visible firsthand as you walk down Welkom’s streets and drive to its city centre. More and more, people are becoming desperate for stability, for hope and a need for positive change. We can find a lifeline in Romans 12:21, where the apostle Paul encourages us: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” It reminds me of a well-quoted statement by John Stuart Mill in 1867, which I will paraphrase for our local relevance. “If good people want to see the degradation of their city continue; stand by and say nothing and do nothing.” How can we become agents of change to bring the good that overcomes evil in our city? Firstly, overcoming starts with the attitude that we need Jesus. In Matthew 5:3, Jesus says that we

are blessed when we acknowledge our need of Him and, “This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” – 1 John 5:4 Next is to pray and bless the city. If you feel like a captive in your own city, scripture instructs us to pray and bless the city. Proverbs 11:11: The blessing of upright people builds up a city, while the words of the wicked tear it down. Lastly, it is vital to collaborate. Partner with likeminded people who are using their gifts and influence to affect change. Remember, we are stronger together. We don’t need to look for evil and destruction – it is already there. But the good is something we must actively choose. Again and again. It is not only an opportunity to shine our light, but the times demand it. As a community we continue to pray: Lord, have mercy and help us not to get stuck in hopelessness and passivity; and Lord, empower us, to be your hands and feet. – Emmanuel Archontakis, Kingdom Ministeries in Welkom

FOTO: Marti Will

Ingedagte sit ek die sakkie suiker in my handsak.

We need action, not another meeting Concerned Resident, Welkom: I write this letter with a heavy heart, but also with honesty. We can no longer pretend that everything is fine in our community. Crime is a serious problem, but so is the silence and complacency that allow it to continue. People in positions of authority are entrusted with protecting residents from violence, vandalism, bullying and crime. When personal disputes or interests interfere with these responsibilities, trust in leadership is destroyed. The law must be enforced fairly and consistently, without fear or favour. Another major concern is the illegal drug trade. Drugs reach our children and contribute to theft, housebreaking and other crimes. We must confront

those involved in selling drugs rather than only deal with the consequences. It is particularly painful when families knowingly provide shelter to people involved in criminal activity. We must also end the culture of silence. Neighbours who report suspicious activity should not be told to mind their own business. People must be able to report crime without fear of intimidation or victimisation. Faith leaders have an important role. Churches should be willing to speak the truth and stand against criminality. Community meetings are important, but residents need more than meetings. We need action, accountability and consequences. We must also address residents who refuse to pay for essential municipal

services. At the same time, government must be held accountable for corruption, wasteful expenditure and poor service delivery. Ultimately, we must take responsibility for the leaders we elect. We therefore call for the law to be enforced without fear or favour; decisive action against drug dealers; protection for whistleblowers; greater accountability from public officials and faith leaders; and capable people to be placed in positions of responsibility. Residents have a responsibility: stop protecting criminals, stop remaining silent about wrongdoing and demand better from those who represent us. Our community can be better. But that will require courage, accountability and action.

Calibre of fighting spirit displayed MARTI WILL Welkom fighter Brandon “The Dragon” Kelly has added a South African national title to his growing martial arts record after an impressive performance at the All Out War 2026 tournament in Potchefstroom. Kelly, representing the RCFA Bhubezi Fight Club in Welkom, defeated Corne Weeler of Sasolburg in the Full Contact High Kick 65 kg to 69 kg national title bout on Saturday 29 August. The tournament, hosted by Ring Contact Fighting Arts (RCFA) at the Potchefstroom Banquet Hall from 28 to 30 August, attracted martial artists competing across a range of disciplines. Kelly secured first place and the national title in the Full Contact High Kick division on the main card.

He also delivered strong performances in other disciplines, finishing second in Semi-Contact Close Combat and third in both Baton and Series. His latest achievement adds to an already successful competitive career. The first-degree blue belt previously enjoyed multiple Junior South African Millennium Championship victories in 2024 and 2025, and claimed double gold at the Best of the Best Tournament in Vereeniging. Kelly won both the Semi-Contact High Kick and Semi-Contact Close Combat divisions at the tournament and has also received national recognition through nominations for the RCFA awards in the Senior Male Millennium and Senior Male Full Contact Close Combat categories. Fellow Bhubezi fighter Keagan Smith also enjoyed a highly successful tournament. Smith won the Full Contact Low Kicks

division by technical knockout (TKO) on the undercard, as well as the Full Contact Sport Boxing and Fitness Challenge divisions. The club’s junior fighters also contributed to its medal haul. Bea-nay Nel won gold in Semi-Contact Low Kicks, and silver in Semi-Contact High Kicks and Semi-Contact Close Combat. Ayden Thompsonclaimed silver in Semi-Contact Sport Boxing and bronze in Semi-Contact High Kicks.
